Circle of Friends Book Club II has come a long way since President, Shunda Blocker, started it in January 1997 in Atlanta, Georgia. It is the largest group (with over 65 active members) of the Circle of Friends Book Club eleven chapters. COF II is the road map that bonds and links the chain of all the other chapters. Its spiral chain drives a powerful and positive response that has moved others in the literary arena. Shunda said, "I decided to carry on the legacy of Circle of Friends Book Club, which originated in Valdosta, Georgia, because I saw a need in today's society for "sistahs" to reach out to each other and continue sharing knowledge." Initially, the purpose of the club was for each member to read books and meet once a month to discuss the book. With their contributions, Circle of Friends Book Club II has made its mark within the literary arena.
In September 1997, several members of Circle of Friends Book Club II appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Book Club's Anniversary Show. Circle of Friends Book Club II has been successful in hosting book signings for authors such as E. Lynn Harris, Sheneska Jackson, Walter Mosley, Omar Tyree, Eric Jerome Dickey, Michael Baisden and many others.
The members of COF II are very passionate about promoting literary throughout the Atlanta area. COF II has designated the month of September as literacy month. Last year we celebrated by having our 5th Annual Book Drive at the East Lake Family YMCA. Free literature, storytelling, games and prizes were awarded to those in attendance.
In addition, once a month, members of COF II is instrumental in reading to terminally ill children at local hospital.
Our motto is "Sistahs Sharing Knowledge." Each members of Circle of Friends Book Club promises to promote and spread knowledge by marketing literacy every chance they get!
