To be clear - this is on Wednesday Dec 3 (as in body of message), not on Tuesday Dec. 2 (as listed in the meeting notice).  Only Touchstone members get in free; non-members need to pay, even if they are signed-in as a guest to the gym (or so says the person at the gym).

Lost Trail Lodge Update (12/16/08)

We currently have 12 people confirmed for the Lost Trail Lodge trip scheduled for January 9, 10, and 11.  If you have friends who are interested, please forward an invitation to them.

To break even we need 20 people.  I will release the remaining space on 12/26/2008, unless more sign up.

Ice Climbing

It looks like there will be ice climbing on Saturday, so bring your crampons if this is of interest.

Luggage

It is very easy to dry clothing in the lodge, so you will only really need a change of base layers.  Freight into the lodge is an extra (you will understand why) so please minimize your luggage as much as possible by carrying your personal gear in yourself in a backpack.

Payment

Disregard if you have already paid; otherwise via Paypal to tombcronin@... @ $160/person.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Sincerely, Tom Cronin

I was thinking about doing a climb of Split Mountain (14,058 ft) in
the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Would any of you like to
join me for a winter ascent from Dec 27 to Dec 31?

Of those that have climbed it in the past, how long is the class 3
section? How easy or difficult do you anticipate this section with
snow and ice?

If you have some other adventure planned during this time, let me
know, maybe I can join you instead.

Happy Holidays,

Adrian

Hey Adrian,

I did Split last March. Class 3 section isn't that bad. I'd be
interested in doing Split again but would rather do the St. Jean
couloir. I'm thinking that it might take some time for the snow to
settle in that narrow colouir before venturing into it.

I'm planning to do White Mountain Peak from the east side as soon as
my eyes heal from surgery. Let me know if you are interested in that.

Actually, the "old jeep road" climbs White Mtn Pk from the south, via Schulman, Patriarch, and Barcroft, and is gated about 3 km south of Barcroft Station. From the east side, there aren't any roads that reach up very far. Info about east side ascents could be gotten from Nancy Pallister if you can get a hold of her. Likewise, from the west there are no roads that reach up farther than the bottoms of the canyons. The west side ascents are quite spectacular, as is the restored area (cabins, etc) in the Jeffrey Mine Canyon behind the White Mtn Ranch.

Multiday Ski Tour - Crystal Basin/Loon Lake area west of Desolation Wilderness

Van Vleck Ski Hut trip for single adults - Feb 5 to 8, 3 nights. Estimate $30
-40 per person plus food and gas. We always enjoy good food and good
camaraderie. Intermediate ski touring ability required including comfortable
skiing down a hill either by traversing or downhill turning. If you are over the
beginner skier hump, you'll work hard but be fine. We ski as a group and help
each other as needed. We usually have a mix of experienced backcountry
telemarkers and more intermediate ski tourers. The hut is accessed off hwy 50
and Ice House Rd in the Crystal Basin area. Carpool from Sacto if desired. View
the Crystal Range from the hut. Day skiing opportunties include skiing the flats
and meadows, or exploring nearby ridges and shooting for the top of Tells Peak
for some turns. There will be folks in the group who will want to do either
option. Hut description at:

Here is the solution:
While signed in to Yahoo, go to http://calendar.yahoo.com This will
pull up your personal calendar.
On upper right side of page, click on Options.
In the Events column, click Time Guides.
Scroll down to the list of your groups.
Remove the checkmarks by clicking on them beside the groups you don't
want to appear on your personal calendar.
Scroll down to bottom of page and click Save.

I'll try to join part of the conference call tomorrow, but I'll be in
Truckee with my family over MLK weekend and I'd like to make one or
more day trips. Let me know if any of these sound particularly
interesting.

- Mt Rose summit. The snow at the top doesn't last long, so this is
more about reaching the summit than skiing.
- Peaks near Mt Rose: Tamarack, Relay, Galena chutes, etc.
- Tour from Brockway Summit to Martis Peak and over to the Placer
county highpoint on Mt Baldy. ~10 mi round trip, but it looks like
intermediate terrain.
- Castle Peak. 3rd class on top or skiing the north side.
- Mt Lola (I'm not sure what a winter visit entails)

Snowboards are fine (there are some flat areas at Mt Rose though) and
snowshoes might work for some of these.

Thanks for all your help this last weekend with hauling gear, cooking, being safe, and wonderful camaraderie!

Here is a link to the few pictures I took:

On Sunday, Bill, Brendan, and I hiked out via Emigrant Canyon and Donner Lake.  This way out took about three and half hours.  I'm attaching the route for future consideration as a way out or into the Lodge.  Deep snow might double the stated time.

> Depending on interest and conditions, we will either try to summit Mt
Rose or ski around Relay Peak and the Galena Bowls. Snow doesn't last
near the summit for long, so snowshoes, skis, and snowboards are all
welcome for the approach. The Galena Bowls probably won't interest
those on snowshoes but will offer the best chance of powder. Please
include your preference.
