YOSEMITE IN THE SIXTIES: A SLIDE SHOW BY GLEN DENNY

This slide show is based on Glen Denny's book, "Yosemite in the
Sixties," published by Patagonia in 2007. It consists of approximately
130 black and white digital slides showing major climbs of the
sixties, important characters of the period (including Yvon Chouinard,
Tom Frost, Chuck Pratt, Warren Harding, and Royal Robbins), and the
social scene in Camp 4. During the show, Denny discusses the images,
gives an insider's view of this important era through stories and
anecdotes, and invites questions from the audience. The show is
approximately 90 minutes long.

Directions:
From Highway 101 at Santa Rosa go west on Highway 12 to Stony Point

Note from Linh. Looks like a great opportunity to polish your
skills, learn from pros and best of all, GET FED!

We have another AAC sponsored event coming up in October. On the
24th thru 26th, we will participate in Climb Smart, a weekend of
climbing inspiration and instruction. It is primarily sponsored by
Patagonia, Black Diamond and Adventure 16 to benefit the Friends of
Joshua Tree and the Access Fund. As such, we are represented by the
attending athletes-Kate Rutherford, Majka Burhardt and Mark Wilford,
who are all AAC members and dignitaries.

This is a great way to learn new techniques or brush up on old
techniques you should have learned years ago. Wilderness Outings, an
AMGA acredited climbing school/guide service, will provide most of
the instruction with the rest filled-in by the attending athletes.
The cost is $85 for the entire event- camping for the entire event,
instruction for Saturday and Sunday, dinner Saturday night and a
great chance to win many great prizes. For $30 you get the dinner on
Saturday night, slideshows by Kate and Majka and a chance to win
those great prizes in the raffle.

I'll be there on behalf of Black Diamond Equipment and the AAC. I
know I haven't met too many of you so this might be an excellent
opportunity to do so. Also, we're looking for volunteers to man the
AAC table on Friday and Saturday night. You will gain a great deal
of knowledge and inspiration by attending the event and if you help
out you'll get the satisfaction of giving back some of that stoke.
Let me know if you can make the event and I hope to see you there.
Please check out the flyer:

This e-mail pertains to the CMG website and has nothing to do with climbing.

I would like to update the URL of the Yahoo California Mountaineering Group website from SFCMC to CMG as SFCMC no longer makes sense.

I would like to change the URL to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CMG/

The CMG suffix was not available until recently as it was in use by another group.  The Yahoo technical team was able to make CMG available to us as the previous CMG German group was clearly inactive.

The change will affect existing links to our website.  The plan is to have a web site with the old link redirect users manually to the new link, until external links are updated.  External link examples are the "Access Fund", "Touchstone Climbing", "Summit Post", and other Yahoo groups.

E-mail to the group will also change; to post a message the e-mail will be:

Please let me know if you have any concerns regarding this update.  If there are no concerns, I will attempt to make the change next week.  After the update you may need to revise your personal favorites and addresses.

A full day of climbing and instruction on the beautiful (and real!)
rocks of Saint Helena . Classes last from around 10am to 4pm. Bring
layered loose fitting clothing, food and water. I will need to know
shoe size of anyone who is coming and a check in advance so I know who
is coming and reserve your space. We meet in Calistoga at 9:30 and
carpool to parking lot. Bring a pack to carry your food and gear in
for the hike to the climbing spot.

October 6
This class is an ideal course for beginners and those in need of a
refresher. the day's end you'll be acquainted with the basics of rock
climbing, from climbing terminology and safety to knot tying and
belaying. HMA supplies shoes, harnesses, ropes, etc. Only $50.

October 7
This hands on course is a comprehensive next step for the gym climber,
boulderer or even sport and beginning outdoor climber who would like
to learn more about placing protection, setting anchors for top rope
climbing and belay stations. Also by the end of the day we will have
gone over how to make bomb proof anchors, rescue systems, safety and
rescue techniques. There is a ton off tricks knots and skills taught
through out the day, so I advise bringing a note book. All the
equipment is provided. $75

Some of us who are also members of the CMC have discussed "fradulent
elections" of the board to the CMC, which is a public corporation.
Up to now I have refrained from making too many comments but the
issues of last year's elections are being repeated again this year.

I just got the ballot in the mail. It's hidden in the back of the
newsletter attached to the newsletter. The ballot must be mailed
and is due TODAY. Many of you are probably in the same boat and
have no way to comply with the deadline because it's physically
impossible to move snail mail that fast and the only other way to
vote is to show up in person to the board meeting. Most of us also
can't travel on short notice.

I have complained that this violates the by-laws that state
a "reasonable process" must be followed that includes a minumum time
period of 15 days to collect ballots. I am mailing my ballot
tomorrow and would encourage you to do the same, even though it's
past the deadline.

I don't know 2/3 of the candidates up for election. I'm sure they
are fine people, but what have they done for the CMC club? If you'll
forgive the political statement, I would like to endorse some write-
in candidates.

Tom Cronin has led more trips than any other person in the last two
years for the CMC. He has done a great job as the Bay Area
representative in recruiting talented climbers and making the club
more inclusive to not only the bay area people, but also to other
people in non-SoCal regions in this state. He has reached out to
other organizations to build relationships with Cragmont Climbing
club, Rock Rendezvous, RIM and the AAC. He's a fantastic skier as
well and it would be nice to tap into this expertise he has and work
to drop the words "climbing season" from our vocabulary, because we
can do it year round.

Chris O'Donnell is also one of the most active CMC leaders, and has
done a lot to try to steer the focus towards the official charter
which is technical alpine climbing and practice for technical alpine
climbing. Right now there are NO technical climbs on the trip
roster, so we could really use his expertise as an all-around climber
who can do rocks and ice in any combination. Chris also ventures
outside CA regularly and has made trips to AK and Ecuador in the last
couple of years to continuously improve his skills and have some
fun. He's the first guy I call when I would like to climb in the
dead of winter or the unpleasant summer heat because he shows up well-
prepared and with a great attitude.

Chris Jain is a former board member who is also very active behind
the scenes. Even with two small children, he gets out often (I've
climbed with him twice this year alone). A corporate lawyer by
profession, he's also been a voice of diplomacy and tact while the
CMC board struggles to get the by-laws and common practices back in
sync with each other. We've had some fairly serious breaches in
compliance that has caused a rift among the membership so I think the
CMC board could really use his patience and expertise at this time.

No matter who your choices are, ignore the deadline, fill out your
ballot and make your voice heard.

Hi Susan et al

Yes, I received mine yesterday and was a bit surprised as well about not given the opportunity to nominate board directors and the short deadline - not sure where the glitch occurred or if it just impacted those of us in NorCal. I checked the website for BOD statements and did not see any which is a fairly standard practice. Fortunately I know you and Tom personally and will be writing both of you in, I don't know Chris Jain or Chris O'Donnell though respect your opinion and endorsement to add them as well.

My ballot will be in the mail today!

Are there any CMG officers? Separate website? Things are still a bit hazy in this member's eyes...

To quote Alexander Solzhenitsyn; "You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything he's no longer in your power -- he's free again."
Or looked at another way - "who needs them?".

I am not a member of CMC, just CMG, and frankly I don't see any value in wanting to join the former.  Tom and Susan and others do an amazing job of organzing fun events with the CMG, and without any of the political BS.  At the end of the day, if the folks running CMC want to treat it as their little kingdom, without giving back in the form of interesting and relevant activities, then why bother supporting them with your $?

I feel I will get flooded with replies to this post - which is actually what I want.  So here goes:  my company is prepping their annual sales meeting and I was asked by one of the organizers for "recommendations for an inspirational rock climbing movie".  What they're looking for is a/several movies that might might have some great shots of difficult climbs, difficult climbing moves, inspiring quotes, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

PS:  the only caveat is that this should be available on DVD (ie: teh Michel Petit movie probably won't do 'cause its still in theatres)

Hey, fellow nature lovers-

I have a new Garmin Rhino GPS. I'm looking for recommendations on what
the leading software is for plotting hiking, hunting, routes,
uploading maps, etc, - US States or at least North American, not
international. Years ago (7?) it used to be The National Geographic
stuff, but I think they were purchased, re-branded whatever. So, say
you and some friends were going in on a gift of mapping software for a
great backpacking (hunting, fishing, etc) friend with a Garmin GPS,
what would you get? TIA, San Diego Bill

Hi, I sensed some activity over the last couple of weeks.  There was a lot of networking going on which is super.  I heard talk of Needles, Snake Dike, Tenaya Canyon.  Hope everyone had a great weekend and feel free to share.  Here is my report: Simon Bentley and I climbed North Peak NE couloir on Sunday.  Weather and ice were perfect.  Here is a link to some pictures:

If you belong to the ye olde CMC (not the CMG), and received a new ballot, please be advised of the following "write-in" candidates.  Your vote is very important; it really might make a difference (?).

Chris O'Donnell
Tom Cronin
Chris Jain

The ballot in the newsletter is not being counted, with questions of electoral fraud, in of all things, but an election year.  Vote.

Hi Vito, got to remember this for next year. I think the approach to
North Peak might get a little longer after this weekend with a strong
system approaching.

This is a great place to climb during autumn. I've climbed there all
my life. The routes are easy, face/slab, and as usual for the southern
sierra, runout.

This sounds like fun. I spent a lot of summers at Huntington Lake.

There is a particular week long backpack trip off the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, that I have done a few times.  It has been eight years of so since my last trip there, so I am heading back.  I consider it the hands down best week long trip in the Grand Canyon.  It is also the best week long trip I have done period, and I know many that have adventured more than I that say the same.

It combines spectacular waterfalls, hanging gardens, narrow serpentine canyoneering, more than ten miles along the Colorado river, and the day out is a steep one where water scarcity and temperature dictate that only the hardy need apply.   Most of it is cross country, lots of boulder hopping, narrow paths many feet above the River and a passage through Deer Creek Falls that is memorable both for its sublime beauty and its slender,-face-the wall-drop-down -to the creek-adventure.  It can be snowing at the top of the North Rim, even down to the intermediate plateau and 90 degrees and brutally hot at the river, all within 24 hours.

I would like to schedule the trip before or after Spring Break to avoid permit procuring difficulties.  The trip size will be eight maximum.  I will fish around for a couple of weeks and find the week to go for interested parties and then when I decide on a week a call for seriously interested parties will go out and a check made out to me for for forty dollars to cover the permit fees will be how you sign up.  First check-first served as long as your fitness and backpacking/moutnaineering resume is suitable.  Remember, we will be carrying food for a week and up to four quarts of water on some stretches so good conditioning is important, that you are not left to have your bones bleach in the sun, to become a chochkey in some designers home decor.
