Check out the clip!

This is a great organization to support.  Hopefully none of us will need their help!  Please pass it along.

Susan

Hello there,

I hope you're doing well.  As you might know, I'm a member of our county's Search and Rescue (SAR) team.  We are a volunteer organization, and our members are called out fairly often to find missing children, elderly people, and others who find themselves in dangerous situations.

Because we are a volunteer organization and with the recent budget cuts to programs like ours, we have begun hosting the Banff Mountain Centre's Radical Reels tour annually.  If you or someone you know might enjoy this collection of extreme films and also help our team by buying one or more tickets, please let me know.  Details are as follows:

What: Radical Reels Tour 2008. View clips from this year's movie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l9PluvYCwM
When: Friday, September 26, 2008.  Doors open at 7 pm for dinner and drinks donated by local establishments and a silent auction. Show starts at 8 pm.
Where: Brenden Theatres Concord 14, 1980 Willow Pass Rd, Concord, CA
Tickets cost $35 and include dinner, drinks, and the show.

If you can't make the show but would still like to donate, feel free to contact me directly.  All fundraising efforts are used to increase our training, safety, and effectiveness during searches.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Take care,

Alyssa Skye

Hi,

I am planning a long weekend in the high sierra mid August. I would
like to head up around Mt.Conness but my backpacking buddy says there
are no trailhead permits available. I looked on the yosemite website
and it looks to me like trailhead permits are not needed around this
area only backcountry permits. Can someone help us figure this one out.

Thanks,

Patrick.

Hi Patrick, a little known loophole is that if you go in from
Saddlebag Lake there is no quota. Note that there are camping
restrictions in the Hoover wilderness East of Yosemite. You still
need a permit which you can get from the Tuolumne wilderness office or
at Saddlebag Lake (hours vary). Tom

Thanks to everyone for the replies, much appreciated. I hope to still get along on a CMG trip or two this year and meet some of you.
BTW Tom kudos for starting the CMG, the activity on the email list and the number of trips has exploded, it's fantastic to see.

Hi all-

I'm trying to get a reasonably accurate headcount of the number of
people coming to Courtright reservoir for rock climbing. The campsites
are unreservable but I hope to be there in the early-mid afternoon and
claim spaces for us at Trapper Springs. See calendar for details.
THis is a great trip for the families too since there is swimming,
hiking, cycling, etc. opportunities too. I posted a tentative roster
in the files section. If you're coming but not on the roster, or I've
miscounted the number of people you are bringing or if your plans are
changed, please drop me a line. Thanks.

Hi-

More people expressed interest in doing a "reverse" climb
(Canyoneering) down the Tenaya Canyon than we probably can get permits
for. Sofia Veniard is going to get a permit for 8 and so will I, but
we will probably still have a pretty good sized waitlist. If you are
no longer interested, please drop me a line so I can take you off the
roster and someone else can have a chance. The roster is in the files
section.

Thanks!

You climb it as an overnight trip and stay at young's lakes or as a day trip from saddlebag lake ( forest service land not yosemite).  For young's lake you need a backcountry permit.  Every trailhead has a limited number of people that can have a backcountry permit.  So  I think that is what your friend means by trailhead permits.  For the day trip you don't need anything.

Susan-

The bad news is that my daughter had a bad swim season and did not
swim as fast as she did last year. The good news is that she did not
qualify for the year-end invitational meet and therefore I am free the
the Courtright trip for the weekend of August. Please sign me up.

Anyone up for going up the N. Arete of BCS this coming weekend
(pending permit**)? I'd like to take it a little "easier," i.e. hike
in Sat and set up camp and climb Sunday (instead of doing the climb in
a day). I'd also be open to spending the weekend up on Tuolumne
(AAC's climb-munity) instead doing Tenaya Peak etc. My only
limitation is my quads are not back up to 100%, so I cannot do routes
with long approaches like Matthes and Conness in a day. (The limit is
mainly in the approach I am back to 100% on vertical ground.)

**I am planning to be lining up for a permit in Bishop Fri morning.
It'd be great if could Fri off and we can go up and do West Crack,
Crying Time Again etc. on Fri before hiking in Sat.

Cheers,
Alfred (alfred.kwok at pomona.edu)

Hey Susan,

The easiest answer (but not necessarily the easiest trip) is the Skyline to the Sea Trail that goes from Castle Rock State Park on Skyline Blvd, through Big Basin State Park, and ends up at Rancho del Osso and the Pacific Ocean. Off the top of my head I believe it's about 35 miles.

A shorter option would be to go from the park headquarters at Big Basin and either do a loop or head out to the ocean from there. Either way it'd be an easy two day trip.

Let me know if those trips sound interesting and I can point you to more information.

Have a great weekend,

Richard

Hi Susan,

Strongly recommend Big Basin; the 11.7mile Berry Creek Falls Loop, with stopover at Sunset.  (Much better in wetter times, but still a worthy delight).

Butano has a great loop also; with a good campsite halfway around.  Different terrains and vegetation - pine areas; chaparral; redwoods; etc.  Anna Nuova Trail is a real but-kicker start, but it is not too long, and there is an easier if less stimulating alternative start.  The return down Jackson Flats is a memorable stride through real redwood-land.

Have a great trip,

Roger

Great climbing.

Saturday, full house on Tenaya, Sharon leading me and Karen (1st time on a 3 rope) Susans and Chris, Rita and Daniel, Alfred and John.

Very long day, I liken it to riding a century on a bike, just with better views.

Great get together that night and groupsite G from the AAC!

Sunday, Rita, Sharon, Alfred and I had plans on Z-tree, but were not feeling it.  Alfred has this cool beta on a route on Dozier Dome.  A crack.. sorta of.. didnt fit my body or my big hands.  Sharon karate chopped her way up that crack.  I on the other hand, perfect the knee jam.  I left the crack and pushed my comfort level and limits on the face next to it.

Thank you all for another great trip!

Here are the goods...

Hey folks
I'm interested in attending the Courtright outing and looking for
people that are interested in carpooling.
I live in the north Bay area, Sonoma County, and I want to work at
least Friday morning. I'm a novice climber with most of my own gear.
So if you're in the Bay Area and don't plan to leave until Friday
afternoon, perhaps you'd like to share gas, if not in your car then in
my truck. Contact me here.

Can anyone recommend a good place for camping with small children/toddlers near
the Bay Area? I am on a quest to find the ideal spot: safe, grassy, easy
access. We recently drove to Sequoia (5 hours each way) to find our campsite
heavily laden in carbon dust from the fire pit's years of heavy use. The little
one was covered in the stuff. Worse yet our camp sat on the edge of a cliff
overlooking a beautiful river, which had some kind of mystic pull on our 1-yr
old wanderer. We pulled up stakes and headed home after 24 hours. BUT my wife
has agreed to give camping another try if I can find the right spot. Any help?

Thanks,
John Street
