Susan,

Hi. Is this trip to climb Rainier open to people who didn't express interest earlier, i.e., people like me? I'm very interested in going.

Hi-

I think that we have tentative dates for Rainier now: Sept 18-21,
which will give us a one day bad weather contingency and also give us
time to check in as a team in person, which is required. I will be
emailing the 13 people that have expressed interest with details
tonight before we make a decision on route (this week) so I can try to
request a permit. My co-host is Michele Santilhano. She's done all
the 7 summits and is an outstanding endurance athlete.

I bought a SPOT for my uncle, who does a lot of solo desert trips, for Christmas.  I had him test it out and it seems to work.  It can send an e-mail to a list of friends with your coordinates and a message.  He tested it at his house and the e-mail I received had him across the street about a 100 yards.  There is an anual fee.  There are pricier units on the market with no anual fee so at some point the more expensive units break even.  Tom

I had no takers on Cathedral and only a couple for North Peak, so that coupled with a recently arisen family medical situation, (nothing acute, my uncle), is causing me to reschedule the climbs to an as yet to be determined date.

Hi gang,

I'm adding another trip. Chris O and I have a permit for four to
climb Charlotte Dome (approach via Kearsarge Pass) in King's Canyon
over Labor Day weekend. This climb is open to two other people
interested in the S Face. The approach is a grueling 12 miles, and
involves some bushwhacking and off-trail work. The climb itself is a
navigational challenge that can go at 12 pitches (50m rope), 5.8 (5.9
optional direct start) if you do it perfectly. Due to the remoteness,
no-bailout commitment and routefinding challenge of this climb, you
and your partner EACH MUST LEAD 5.9 ON GEAR.

Harrison,

Where do you guide?  I'm in the South Bay and looking for a guide for a day of private climbing.  I was thinking either climbing at Pinnacles or Castle Rock due to proximity, though I'm open to other locations as well.  Are you available for guiding in July?

Thx!

Hi Desmo etc,
I am teaching a bigginner/intermedi ate climbing class outdoors with Rockzilla in Napa June 28 for $50. (we also have a class scheduled on July 19) I teach climbing at the local junior college and have been taking people out for 20 years. Tom Cronin has mentioned doing a class to me too so I thought now I should let you all know about it. If you have any questions feel free to contact me; Harrison Hood

Hi Brian,
There's a good chance I will be up there this weekend since I'm leaving for the Eastern Sierra's tomorrow. I'm meeting other friends during the week to climb however, I don't lead as of yet but follow well.  The West Ridge of Mt. Conness has been on my tick list. If you can't find a partner and are still interested let me know my cell # is 661-619-5056....Annie

Looks like you all had a really good time. Thanks for sharing the
pictures!

Sharon and I tried to get in a little crag practice and headed for
Donner Summit since I only had one day. On pitch two we got a rope
snagged in a perfect finger crack so I got to escape a belay for real
for the first time. Ugh. Don't recommend it. My finger midjoints are
burned so we spent the rest of the day on recon for this weekend.

Speaking of this weekend...anyone headed up to AAC climb-munity @
Donner?

Just a heads-up that the permit situation has changed for NFLP Creek day use. Basically, NFLP Creek is being covered by the same day use permits as the Whitney Trail, but the overall limit on permits stays the same. The end result being that it will be tougher for climbers to do their thing as they will have to compete for permits with the hikers.

The following message is a response sent to me after I registered my distaste for the new rules.

Thank you for your interest and input into the management of the John Muir
Wilderness, specifically the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek.  The temporary
measure to require day use permits in North Fork in 2008 will be followed
by a more comprehensive review of visitor use and resource issues in the
North Fork, and your input will be a part of that review.   I will keep
your email address as part of our mailing address for scoping for projects
in the North Fork.....I understand concerns about the availability of day
use permits, however our review of permits in the Whitney zone from last
year indicates that day use permits were available on most days.

In addition, the Forest Service has made changes in the issuance of day use
permits for the Whitney zone, including issuance of no-show permit
reservations the day prior to a day use trip.  This is unique to the
Whitney zone, all other trails on the Inyo National Forest still have
release of no-show permit reservations on the day of entry.   Cancelled
permit reservations will be available at the Interagency Visitor Center
beginning at 11:00 am the previous day of entry, and no-show permit
reservations will be issued beginning at 1:00 pm on the day prior to entry.

For questions regarding permit issuance, please contact our Wilderness
Permit office either on line at
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild or call (760)  873 -2485.

For information regarding the management of the Whitney Zone, please
