CMC Trip Logistics – Lover’s Leap - 5/12 - 13

Hi CMC members and guests, it looks like we are going to have great weather this weekend so we should be able to get in a lot of fun climbing and enjoy pleasant camping.

Carpooling:
For those coming from the Bay Area, we can car pool from the Touchstone Concord parking lot. Let’s meet at 7:00 am and depart no later than 7:15 am.  I can drive or pay for gas.  Let me know if you want to carpool.

Meeting Place:
For those driving separately, let’s meet at the campground parking lot trailhead at 10:00 am.

Camping:
We can stay at the campground, or on nearby forest service land if the campground is closed or full.  If anyone gets there early, snag us a large campsite.

Directions:
Here are directions from Sacramento: drive East on Highway 50, passing through Kyburz, to Strawberry where you will turn into the Strawberry Lodge lot on your right.  Continue to proceed East on Strawberry Lane, paralleling the highway, about 500’, and then make a left after crossing a bridge onto 11N20A which leads to the campground.  Note: There is limited parking at the campground so it might be necessary to park at the 11N20A turnoff (still on Strawberry Lane), particularly if you see a lot of other parked cars and people walking.

Roster:
Please reconfirm so we don’t wait for ghosts:

Steve Thaw
Jennifer Wang
Michael Dahlquist
Mario Molina
Phil Klein
Kelly Flach
Amy

I will send a follow up e-mail if there are any developments of note.

Sincerely,

Tom Cronin

I'm interested in climbing Shasta this summer, but I missed getting in
on the CMC climb. Is any other CMC member interested in putting
together a climb up Shasta for sometime this summer?

If you are working on your weekend plans this would be a great choice (I can't make it, Tom):

From Dave Riggs, American Alpine Club

Hi all. Here are the details for this weekend. I'm
looking forward to seeing all of you. Feel free to
pass this info on and bring friends. I received a
number of cancellations today, so we could use some
more folks to keep it lively. It's helpful, but not
essential, for me to know if more people are coming so
we have enough food and drink. Let's get some more
climbers to attend! Thanks. --Dave

LOCATION: We will camp on Bela Vadasz's property
located on Lake Mary Road just Southwest of and
adjacent to the old ASI lodge (now Sugar Bowl
Academy). It's right on top of Donner Pass on the
South side of Old Highway 40. So if you're coming up
the pass from the West, turn right immediately before
the Sugar Bowl Academy parking lot, and if you're
coming up from the East, turn left immediately after
that parking lot. Parking will be along Lake Mary
Road. Don't park in the Academy's lot. I'll have some
small signs up and my dark blue Subaru Outback with a
storage box on the roof rack will be parked at the
site. If you need more detailed directions just email
me or give me a call (contact info below). Tent sites
are about a 25 to 50m walk from the road.

GROUP GEAR / FACILITIES: SNS will provide: a Wag Bag
toilet system with privacy tent at the site, some
community water containers, a large folding table for
the food, a group shelter if needed (perhaps for
wind). Bring your own: tent, chair, other camping
gear, breakfast and lunch food, some water, climbing
gear, and good cheer.

SCHEDULE: Friday June 8 through Sunday June 10. Arrive
Friday evening, climb Saturday and Sunday. Feel free
to join us for the whole deal or just one day or just
the party or whatever you can do. I'll be at the site
from about 7 PM on Friday (maybe earlier). We don't
have a formal plan to climb as one big organized
group; rather you can partner up if needed and head
off on your own. I'm sure anyone needing a partner or
beta on where/what to climb will find it from our
group. We can walk to most of the climbs, and there
are fantastic routes for all abilities. Saturday
evening drinks and barbeque will start around 7.

PARTY: Again, Saturday evening around 7. SNS will
provide a charcoal grill, campfire supplies, and
beverages and munchies. Bring your own grillables for
the barbeque or other main course for Saturday evening
dinner.

RELEASE: You are required to sign the attached
liability release form provided by the AAC in order to
climb and camp with us. Please review, sign and bring
it with you. Note that your signature must be
witnessed (but not notarized). I'll also have some
blank copies.

COST: $10 for climbers under 29 years old (AAC member
or not), $15 for AAC members, $20 for non-members. I
can't really prorate it if you're just coming for one
day, but let's talk if that's an issue, because we
want as many folks to attend whatever parts they can.
Cash is preferred, but I'll also take a check.

Here is some other info related to AAC:
Hey SNS Members,
A reminder that you can still join us THIS WEEKEND, JUNE 9-10: for our DONNER SUMMIT CLIMB-MUNITY: free camping, barbeque and campfire on the beautiful undeveloped property of our member Bela Vadasz right on top of Donner Pass. The forecast calls for perfect sending weather
70s with some clouds. Our gathering spot is within easy walking distance of the crags. $10 for climbers under 29 years old, $15 for AAC members, $20 for non-members. BRING A FRIEND (or two)! Let me know if you can attend, and I’ll get you the logistical details. Contact me at de_riggs@... or 415-860-7649.
And a couple of new items:
JUNE 24: We’ve just added a new event later this month for folks in the Bay Area: New AAC and SNS members Tia Maerz and Kristin Nute, with the generous support of Touchstone Climbing, are hosting a "KICK OFF THE CLIMBING SEASON" gathering at CLASS 5 CLIMBING AND FITNESS in San Rafael on SUNDAY, JUNE 24TH from 5 TO 7 P.M. Make some new friends, check out some comp routes, and enjoy pizza and beer. All are welcome to attend. $5 donation requested. Contact Kristin at krstnute@... or Tia at tmwm1000@....
LOOKING FOR HIGH ALTITUDE PARTNERS: SNS member Mario Molina is planning on taking the month of November off and going climbing, and he’s looking for partners. Mario will probably travel to Ecuador to attempt a peak over 20,000. Mario has been climbing for over 25 years and lives in the Kirkwood/South Lake Tahoe area. You can contact him at in2theunknown@...
And here is a recap of our previously published calendar of coming events:
JUNE 23-30 TETON CLIMBING CAMP: Visit the Tetons the last week of June, when the AAC will host a weeklong camp at the Grand Teton Climbers' Ranch. Both members and non-members are welcome at the gathering, which includes barbecues, slide shows, and plenty of alpine ascents and cragging. A number of SNS members are attending, so there may be carpooling opportunities. Check it out at http://www.americanalpineclub.org/pages/page/144
Email me at de_riggs@... if you’re interested.
JUNE 30: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS ON HALF DOME, YOSEMITE VALLEY: Special Presentation by first ascentionists Royal Robbins, Jerry Galwas, and Mike Sherrick, Saturday June 30th, Yosemite Lodge Amphitheater, 8:30pm. The first ascentionists of the NW Face of Half Dome will be celebrating their achievements in Yosemite at the end of June. They topped out 50 years ago as of June 28th. As a special part of this year's Yosemite Climbers Interpretative programs, these Yosemite legends will be on hand to give a special presentation to climbers and park visitors on the evening of June 30th. Don't miss this chance to meet and enjoy this part of Yosemite climbing history.
JULY 21-22: TUOLUMNE / TIOGA CLIMB-MUNITY: We will try to once again secure a group campsite in the Tuolumne Meadows campground with great access to all the Meadows and nearby Tioga Pass have to offer - mountaineering, cragging hiking and hanging out.
JUNE
OCTOBER: SIERRA MOUNTAINEERING: SNS member Tom Cronin is leading a number of mountaineering trips in the Sierra in June through October for the California Mountaineering Club. They include Tenaya Peak (NW Buttress) June 23, Bear Creek Spire (N. Arête/NE Ridge) July 27-29, Temple Crag (Venusian Blind) Aug 10-12, Mt. Conness (W. Ridge) Aug 18-19, Matterhorn Peak (N. Arête) Sept 1-3, Northern Yosemite (Cleaver, Doodad etc.) Sept 3-8, North Peak (N. Couloir or N. Ridge) September 8-9, Mt. Dana (N. Couloir) Sept 15-16, Tenaya Canyon (descent) 9/29-30, Half Dome (climber approach trail) Oct 13-14, and Mt. Price (class 2) Oct 20-21. Contact Tom at tombcronin@... 925-207-5325.
AUGUST 25-26: DONNER SUMMIT CLIMB-MUNITY II: Repeat performance from June. Maybe Jim Donini will make a cameo appearance like last year.
SEPTEMBER 15-16: ROBBINS PINECREST CLIMB-IN: Royal and Liz Robbins and Tom Frost are once again hosting Sierra Nevada Section members and friends for cgragging, camping and a party at Pinecrest in the Sonora Pass area. This is a longstanding and very popular event, so reserve early!
SEPTEMBER 26-30: YOSEMITE FACELIFT: Last fall, many SNS members helped out Ken Yeager and the Yosemite Climbers Association's tremendous clean up effort in Yosemite National Park. Over five days, 1100+ volunteers contributed 9,000+ hours of time to remove over 25,000 pounds (five tons) of trash from the park. This year, the AAC and the Sierra Nevada Section plan to have a larger presence and offer greater support to this fine grass roots initiative. You won’t want to miss it.
EARLY NOVEMBER: "FALL HIGHBALL," BISHOP. Stay tuned for the final dates. We will repeat this event from last fall, where we enjoyed the great bouldering and cragging near Bishop, with a party, slide show, and fundraiser for Eastside climbing conservation efforts Saturday night at Mill Creek Station. We might even get a band this year!
Hope to see you in the mountains!

Hi All,

Climbers:

Folks new to the club are highly encouraged to attend. This is our big
annual dinner event, and we typically get a large turnout. It's a great
opportunity for those interested in getting to know club members. The
food is good and there's plenty of beer/wine. It's also our last
in-town social event until September.

Non-Climbers:

You're invited too! We promise, you won't have to climb anything at
this event. Purely a social event with lots of nice, friendly people.
Well, yes, lots of talking about climbing, planned trips, and such, but
climbers are capable of talking about other stuff too. Kids are welcome
also, plenty of room to run around and a creek to explore. Sort of like
a camping trip without all the gear and the long drive, and someone else
does the cooking.

Former Climbers:

Hey, we'd love to see you, too! Don't worry, someone will remember who
you are. It's always nice to catch up on what people have been doing.
Much better than that class reunion you were dreading.

HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE! Details below.

Anyone up for a quick escape to the peaks? I've got a NPS Pass, and room for one
or two
climbers at 40 mpg. Willing to repeat many Yosemite peaks, and about Mammoth as
well.
Can leave anytime to about Thursday. Camping and peak bagging, meals in
restaurants or as
you please.

From our friends at the AAC.  Check out July 20 - 22 event in Tuolumne...

Tom

Dear Sierra Nevada Section members,
Hope you are getting out in the mountains. As usual, lots to report, but most importantly a reminder about our next event…
The second annual TUOLUMNE/TIOGA CLIMB-MUNITY on JULY 20-22. There’s still time to sign up, and the great news is that we’ve been able to secure campsites in the Tuolumne Meadows Campground. Thanks to Linda McMillan for nailing this. Suffice it to say that this is but one example of the benefits of the great relationships Linda has built through her work on behalf of the AAC in Yosemite National Park. Cost is $10 for climbers under 29 years old, $15 for AAC members, $20 for non-members. Includes camping Fri and Sat nights and Sat night party with beer, wine and munchies. Email or call our fellow SNS member Tom Burch at tcburch@... or 415-302-0800 to reserve your spot!
Of course we’ve got lots more gatherings planned, and I’ve included the events calendar below. And now for reports on recent AAC and SNS events.
AAC TETON CLIMBERS CAMP. During the last week of June, a number of SNS members and I attended the AAC’s first Climbers Camp at the AAC Grand Teton Climbers’ Ranch. The AAC Board of Directors meeting was held on the 23rd at the start of the Camp, and Black Diamond and Skinny Skis (thanks to Jack and Pat Tackle) hosted a big beer and BBQ bash that evening that was also attended by many Exum and Jackson Hole Mountain Guides returning for the summer season. The Ranch was at its 64 person capacity most of the week. If you’ve not stayed at the Ranch or it’s been a while, go check it out. You won’t be disappointed. Ranch Manager Drew Birnbaum and crew are gracious hosts and run a smooth operation. The cabins are clean and in good working order. Great access to the Tetons, great community with other climbers, and hot showers, all for $8 a night! Check it out at http://www.americanalpineclub.org/pages/page/90. During the Camp, folks partnered up and headed out during the days for some of the classic Teton alpine rock routes like the Snaz in Death Canyon and Irene’s Arete in Garnet Canyon. Evenings featured more beer and BBQs and slide shows by Josh Wharton, Bean Bowers and Jim Donini. My usual climbing partner Tom Burch and I enjoyed doing a couple routes with AAC operations Director Charley Mace. The Camp was so much fun that before the end of the first weekend, there was much talk of repeating it next year. I sure hope so, and encourage you to attend! It’s worth it to see the Dinosaur Egg Toss competition (come to our Tuolumne event, and Ill fill you in).
CLASS 5 AFTER HOURS CLIMBING PARTY. On June 24th, the same evening as the first party at the Teton Climbers Camp, the Sierra Nevada Section hosted an after hours gathering with pizza, beer and of course climbing at Class 5 Climbing and Fitness in San Rafael. Thanks to SNS members Tia Maerz and Kristin Nute for organizing it and to Touchstone Climbing for donating the gym time. About 20 climbers attended, many interested in finding out about the AAC. We hope to do more of these events at gyms not only in the Bay Area, but throughout our Section’s geography. Want to organize one at your regular gym? Email or call me.
HALF DOME 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. I’m hoping Linda McMillan will email us with the details, but from what I’ve heard (and read on SuperTopo), this gathering was well attended and a huge success. Half Dome Northwest Face first ascentionists Royal Robbins, Jerry Galwas, and Mike Sherrick were on hand to celebrate their landmark climb and made a special presentation as part of the AAC sponsored Yosemite Climbers Interpretative programs that occur each Saturday evening throughout the climbing season. What a great example of the promotion of climbing and preservation of its history that only the AAC can do. Congratulations and thank you to Royal and Linda. Bravo!
Upcoming events:
AUGUST 25-26: DONNER SUMMIT CLIMB-MUNITY II: Repeat performance from June. Great cragging, free camping, BBQ. Maybe Jim Donini will make a cameo appearance like last year.
SEPTEMBER 15-16: ROBBINS PINECREST CLIMB-IN: Royal and Liz Robbins and Tom Frost are once again hosting Sierra Nevada Section members and friends for cragging, camping and a party at Pinecrest in the Sonora Pass area.
SEPTEMBER 26-30: YOSEMITE FACELIFT: Last fall, many SNS members helped out Ken Yeager and the Yosemite Climbers Association's tremendous clean up effort. This year, the AAC and the Sierra Nevada Section plan to have a larger presence and offer greater support to this fine grass roots initiative.
EARLY NOVEMBER: "FALL HIGHBALL," BISHOP. Stay tuned for the final dates. We will repeat this event from last fall, where we will enjoy the great bouldering and cragging near Bishop, with a party, slide show, and fundraiser for Eastside climbing conservation efforts Saturday night at Mill Creek Station.
EARLY DECEMBER: ANNUAL SIERRA NEVADA SECTION HOLIDAY DINNER, BAY AREA. We’re looking at changing things up a bit this year with the location and format (no decision yet), but we’ll still have lots of food and spirits, a priority on making it easy for folks to catch up with friends and make new ones, and a slide show from a luminary in the climbing world. We’re also planning a silent auction. Stay tuned for more details, and contact me if you want to help organize it!
Hope to see you at one of our SNS gatherings. Please email or call me for info about any of our events or activities, with feedback or offers to help, or just to say hello. I want to hear from you.
Good climbing,
Dave Riggs

I've decided to replace my ancient mountaineering tent and I'm trying
to decide between the Go Lite Hex 3 or the Black Diamond Megemid lite.
Both are roughly the same size, same price ($235 base $300 w/floor),
same options, same weight (3lbs or 4.5 with floor). Does anyone know
of any details that would tip the scale one way or the other?

Now, add this to the mix. I have a line on a barely used Black
Diamond Skylight package (3 person Bibler style) for about $350
weights about 5+ lbs.

Your perspective will be appreciated.

Hi MP,
The $12 Allweather Space Blanket that I started using 25 years ago and influenced
the SPS, CMC and others to use is now standard. As you know It reflects 80% heat/sun and is waterproof. It serves as a great backup.
I also use the $88 REI 16 oz. Minimalist Bivysac and like it very much.
For 30 years, I used an 7x9 nylon tarp until I found a North Face single wall 3+ lb. tent for
a "reasonable" price..
Best,
Steve

There is also the Montbell Gore-tex bivy sack for 7oz you might want to
look into. Super-ultralight and smaller than a coke can. I used it
recently on my thru-hike of Roper's Sierra High Route w/o resupply and
it performed really well.

Hi all,

I just wanted to let everyone know I got back safely from the doing a
thru-hike of Roper's Sierra High Route without resupply. 195 miles and
most of it is off trail. I finished the route in 11 days 13 hours and
17 minutes. I stated on Sunday July 8 at 7:43am with 12 lbs of organic
raw vegan food (sun-dried fruits and nuts) and less than 5 lbs gear,
for a total starting pack weight of 17 lbs. I climbed 5 peaks along the
way, and hiked from 12 to 14 hours per day. I had a beautiful journey,
and saw 2 bears, lots of deer, one spotted fawn, rabbits, ptarmigans,
grouse, mice, pika, marmots, and lots of flowers, and pristine meadows
and lakes on the x-country route. I finished the route last Thrusday,
July 19 at 9pm in Twin Lakes above Bridgeport, CA.
This was an experiment in minimalism while maximizing on the energy of
raw vegan foods. No bear canister, no tent, no stove, no water filter,
no soap, no mosquito repellant, no problems !!!

peace&love,

Adrian Stingaciu
