Out of five people, in two parties, two climbed the U-notch on Saturday.  Weather was poor Sunday morning.  Snow above 3rd Lake covers the trail.

The large stone ranger "cabin" we passed on the way up Big Pine creek was
actually built for Lon Chaney, the silent Hollywood star by a name
architect. Here is a URL for a picture and a short description.

Nice base camp to go climbing in the Sierras.

Gear related question.

I noticed in the photos you both were using a Bivy. What is the
advantage/disadvantage of each using a bivy as opposed to sahring a
tent, or using light 1 person tents?

My 2 cents: bivy's are lighter.  Disadvantage is condensation, coffin like environment, no one to provide motivation to get up in the early morning.  Tom

My inexperienced take on this was that being so light, a bivy could be carried with you on the summit hike as well, and in case of sudden storms, accidents, and other unexpected events that could prevent a return to mid-altitude camp you have a shelter with you that can enhance overnight survival in case you need to hunker down (ie: high winds, very cold, white-out, etc).  Does that make sense?

I believe one of those in the picture is a BD lightsaber, the other a OR Alpine,
not sure?

Do the experienced people here have a recommendation for a bivy? I think I want
to try going bivy. They look much more advanced the plain Goretex shell we used
in the corps. I always like the cozy feeling of wrapping up in it and digging
myself into the earth.

REI currently has the OR Alpine bivy on sale:

I just bought one, it's nice, but, I haven't figured out how to have the screen closed, but still keep the waterproof covering open.

It fits my 4 season, long thermarest, and leaves me with enough room to roll around inside my sleeping bag.  Probably not enough space to dress and undress, and dry off clothes, and whatnot, like you'd be able to do in a tent.

I'm not sure I'd enjoy the bivy thing if I knew there was going to be a lot of bad weather.

Hi Mike,

I am in the Sacramento area and have been out of the climbing scene
for a few years. I was climbing around 5.9/5.10, leading 5.7/5.8
sport climbs and just learning to lead trad climbs. Plus I was
starting to do more mountaineering (I've done Rainer, Hood, South
Sister, North Sister, Middle Sister and smaller peaks). After a few
years hiatus I'm sure I'll be rusty, but can belay all day.

If you're interested send me a reply or email.

Some pictures of the trip to the Palisades and up the
U Notch.

The ice is in shape now! Both the V-Notch and the U
Notch have lots of exposed water ice. The U notch is
90% and the V Notch at least 75% of the vertical
distance.

I too am in the Sacramento area (Davis).  My usual outings are mostly snow, ice, and backcountry descents.  If those are the type of outing you are looking for give me a shout.  Lots of mountaineering experience (Denali, winter 14ers, volcanoes, etc...), just gaining vertical ice skills, and lots of BC splitboard descents (Langley, Tyndall, Lassen, etc...).  Rock is my weakness, but I am working on attaining some multi-pitch experience.

Cheers,
Chris

Since the Sacramento people have responded, I will too (I am just 50min west of sac)

Real rusty on rocks, been 10 years (even then, only 5.8-5.9 sport stuff)  couple mountaineer classes on Shasta. Mature, disciplined, safe learner.  Glad to haul loads/work for the skills you experienced people could pass down to me.

Thank you,

Hello,
I love in Chico so I guess that makes me central valley. I have done ice climbing, rock, and mountaineering. Actually just got back in the sport after break of few years, did do some climbs with the club this year mostly ice climbing. Really looking forward to some rock and mountaineering this summer.
Give me a holler, Also will  love to find any local members around Chico or maybe Sac who will like to climb on the weekends regularly.

I'm in the Reno area (not central valley) and I'm relatively new to the group... I've been on the Lee Vinning Ice outing and looking to get out more often. I'm looking for a trad/alpinesport partner..... Have some things on my list for the summer and if anyone is interested give me a shout....  I've been climbing for about 9 years and have some AMGA training.... I'm safe....

I'm coming off a finger tendon issue, but looking to start getting out again. Sugar loaf, phantom spires on weekends?

I too am in the Sacramento area (Davis).  My usual outings are mostly snow, ice, and backcountry descents.  If those are the type of outing you are looking for give me a shout.  Lots of mountaineering experience (Denali, winter 14ers, volcanoes, etc...), just gaining vertical ice skills, and lots of BC splitboard descents (Langley, Tyndall, Lassen, etc...).  Rock is my weakness, but I am working on attaining some multi-pitch experience.

I do not know if this is not in keeping with the SFCMC group etiquette , so if it is, I apologize.

But I was planning on backpacking to summit Snow Mountain on May 30th/June 1st.

It seems with so many in the area showing interest, might be fun to gather and talk about plans, while on a little camp-out summit hike.

The schedule I was thinking was car-camp it late Friday night at Dixie Glade, sat morning backpack up the hill. Explore, play. Sunday morning,  go for the summits, then pack out.

Here is a link:

Thanks,

On gore-tex bivys:  They are heavier, no warmer than and marginally more storm protection than a 5 oz emergency bivy.  I use the 5 oz sack overnight frequently, usually with down jacket + pad, no sleeping bag.  Summers, I like my cheap 3 pound, two man tent for multiple days and wake up dry and happy in the morning.  Winters I use MH EV-2 or 4-man Bibler bombshelter.  Reluctance (of men) to share tents is a weird CMC thing that I've never experienced among climbers before.

Not just a CMC thing, the last 2 backpacking trips I went on, I ended up sharing
a tent with females I didnt know. No guys on the trip wanted to share. I am
all for splitting pack weight/volume up. (especially since my tents are heavy)

I have never used a bivy with the poles around the head area, curious to try one
out.

I have an OR Aurora bivy. I only use it at altitude. The inside will fill with water vapor when you are in it so you need to have cold dry air outside the bivy to transfer the water vapor through the membrane.

The OR Aurora is very functional, but there is that in a coffin feeling. To give myself more room, I use a pad outside the bivy. You can use a pad inside, but it does take up room.
I only use the bivy when I am going to spend the night, but never for multiple nights.
For multiple nights, I would rather use a tent.

One last note about the OR bivys, the opening is awkward to get in and out of. There are other bivy sacks that open up to the side. I like that better because you can open up the sack and have someplace dry to sit while you put on your boots. With the OR, you have to sit on the outside of the bag or the small spot where the opening is at the head of the bag.
That is the one inconvenience with OR bags. On the plus side, they are light and tough.

Sincerely, Tom Cronin, tombcronin@...

Please confirm that you will be participating in the Mt. Whitney base camp trip scheduled for 5/16 - 5/20.  Also, please let me know your entry date of choice; either Friday 5/16 or Saturday 5/17 and when you will be heading out (expect Sunday 5/18 for most or all).

There is one permit for each day for six people each day.  You can always try to get your own permit of course.

My tentative plan is to leave the Bay Area early Thursday night and try to get to the trailhead by 8:00 am Friday morning and then hike to Iceberg Lake or Upper Boy Scout Lake.  Saturday can be a rest day or climb one of the surrounding peaks via route of choice.  Repeat for following days.  Let me know if this plan sounds reasonable, or if you have better/different ideas.

If the technical climbs have snow on them then I will opt for 3rd class routes on Whitney, Russell, Thor Peak, Pinnacle Ridge, or Mt. Carrillon.

If anyone wants to carpool please get in touch with me.

We can check the weather forecast on Thursday 5/15 and cancel if necessary.

Here is the write up that was in the newsletter:
May 16th - 20th Friday - Tuesday Mt. Whitney
Hike up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek on Friday or Saturday (reservable quota of six secured for both Friday and Saturday). Camp at Iceberg Lake Friday and Saturday to climb routes of interest. Ice Axe, crampons, and winter clothing required. If the trip is over quota, then you will have to get your own permit, or go on the waiting list. The permits are good through Tuesday May 20th, so if you are done with Whitney by Sunday, and have the time, you can turn your sights on the Fish Hook Arete or vice versa.

I'm in Livermore and am into mountaineering, snow, ice, and backcountry skiing. I'm looking for new partners as well.

Previous experience includes most everything in the Cascades a few times and a Denali ascent a couple of years ago.

Tom,

At this point, it looks like I can climb next weekend.  I can hike in for sure on Saturday or possibly Friday, depending on the permit situation.  I don't need to leave until Monday.

I'm interested in the Half Dome trip on 5/24.  Is it still on?  How do I get details?

Thanks much,
Chris

Hi Peoples,

I added three more trips to the calendar. The first weekend of April
is Donner Summit/Round Valley/Castle Peak (family and snow-beginner
friendly), second April weekend is Mt Tallac on skis (double-black
fun). Also added Half Dome via the death slabs for 5/24 weekend
(great for experienced scramblers looking to build some rock
confidence).

Looks like we're an active bunch of mountaineers and have something
going almost every weekend. No need to actually do the stuff on the
house chore to-do list any more!

Susan
