Ice Climbing & Fly Fishing - President's day weekend Feb. 16 – 18

Here are the details for the California Mountaineering Trip scheduled for President’s day weekend Feb. 16th – 18th.  Read in entirety.

Please confirm if you are still coming or not, if you want to carpool or if you can drive, and where you are coming from i.e. “I am driving from the Bay Area leaving around 2 pm arriving around 8:30 pm and will be staying in Mammoth afterwards.”

I will send out an e-mail on Thursday Feb. 14 indicating that the trip is a “go” or canceled due to weather.

Accommodations:
I reserved room 50 at the Lee Vining Lodge which can accommodate a number of people (the more people the lower the cost).  If you get there before me feel free to check in.  The reservation number is WLVL2155.  So far I have the following confirmed for room 50:

Rick Pape
Bill Stevens

Let me know if you would like to stay in room 50?  Even if you are getting your own room be aware that room 50 has a basic kitchen for all to use and is a good meeting place.

Equipment:
Full shank boots (preferred) and crampons
Ice tools can be shared if you don’t have any as well as ropes, and screws
Bring a harness, helmet, eye protection, spare gloves, snacks, and headlamp
Might need snow shoes, poles, skis…

Schedule:
Here is a draft schedule.  This is our trip so we can make the schedule be whatever we want it to be, and we do not all need to be in lock step.

Friday:
Drive to Lee Vining and check in

Saturday:
7:00am            Meet at Nicely’s restaurant for breakfast (or cup of coffee).
Decide on destination for the day; June Lake or Lee Vining
8:30 am           Drive to climb
4:00 pm           Finish climbing
6:00 pm           Dinner somewhere, decide what to do on Sunday

Sunday:
Do what we decided to do Saturday night.  We might try to get an earlier start for the best lines.

Those of you who fly fish, or want to learn, will have a unique opportunity to test their skills in the East Walker River near Bridgeport with Bill Becher who is writing an article for Fly Fishing magazine.  Bill is also writing an article on ice climbing for the NYT.  For details contact Bill at bb@....  Bill says: “this would probably be a snow shoe and fishing outing… I do need some people in the photos! I have an extra pair of snowshoes and plenty of fly fishing gear... All the cool climbers, Chouinard, Bob Gaines etc fly fish… makes a good rest day activity.”

Open to other options such as a mountain climb or ski into Bodie let me know.

Monday:
Do what we decided to do on Sunday and drive home mid afternoon?

Don’t hesitate to contact me or the group with any questions, suggestions, or if you just want to ramble.

Sincerely,

Tom Cronin

HI Tom,

I'm nursing a finger/tendon issue, but I'm planning on still attending. Dam that climbing gym....

I'm coming from Reno and will probably meet everyone at Nicely's Saturday morning.

Not that I know anyone yet, but if someone needs a place to crash in Reno, just let me know.

I know i don't have the full requirements to become a member. I don't know how to fully use a ice ax and my anchoring needs a little work. I was hoping that by joining you guys on some of the outings i can gain the necessary skills to do so.

The trip is a GO!  The forecast is for clear weather and light winds, highs in the 50's and lows in the 20's (maybe a little too warm).

Keep in mind that there many activities in the surrounding area that might be of interest.
  • Fly fishing photo shoot (Bill Becher)
  • Ski/snowshoe trip into the Bodie ghost town (Bill Becher)
  • Mt. Morrison from Convict Lake day trip (Bill Stevens)
  • Bouldering at the Happy's & Buttermilks (Evan Cronin)
  • Owens river gorge sport climbing (Rick Pape)
So load up your vehicle with all your toys (i.e. rock shoes etc).  We might want to spit up on the ice climbing (Horsetail falls, Tatums, Lee Vining Canyon) so we don't overload one area, but we can make that call at breakfast.

If you still need a ride, or have space available, respond to everyone with: "I need a ride from <fill in blank>" or "I have space for <blank> people leaving from <blank> at <blank> time."

I will probably arrive around 9 or 10 pm Friday night; if you get there before me leave the light on and door unlocked (use a headlamp if you are coming in really late).  Room 50 is now full I would say with about 9 occupants.

Bye for now, Tom Cronin, 925-207-5325, tombcronin@...

Previous e-mail follows:

Sincerely,

Tom Cronin

Thanks everyone for an enjoyable and safe weekend.  At work this morning a presentation was given to the effect that human nature is to think accidents always happen to other people.  I responded that if you do something like ice climbing long enough it will happen to you, but we proved we are safe climbers this weekend.

In attendence were:
Ray Regalado
Craig Leventhal
Pui Sparks
Bill Becher
Bill Cossaboom
Agnes Sauvage
Heiko Knapp
Justin Munoz
Munish Lal
Chris Odonnell
Eric Burt
Jeff Dunbar
Steve Aho
Bill Stevens
Rick Pape
Jacob Sams
Annie Binz
Will Duonola

For those of you who didn't go to June Lake on Sunday, we found Tatums fully in the sun so moved over to Horsetail falls, which was also in the sun and had seen recent a large scale collapse.  We then moved to the gully immediately to the right of Horsetail and established a mixed ice, snow, and rock route which took us all day.  Ray lead a v-thread practice session that Will put into action recovering all our gear.

If anyone still owes me $15 I have no idea who you are, so you are safe, for the moment.

Sincerely, Tom Cronin

Here is my 2 cents:
Depending on the season its towards the end of a good Cassaval climb. Its certainly been too late in the past.
If your setting up tents at Bunny Flats and your arriving at 4 you might as well hike to Horse Camp (1 mile from Bunny). Or show up later.
Its a bit of a haul to get to the shoulder but your giving yourself more time to do that (10 hours) than to Summit (8 hours). Its probably the other way around. And I would say more like midnight or later to Bay Area.

Over all its a bit rushed unless everyone is in really good shape.

Looks great! I thought the early starts might be to
avoid midnight climbing on the finishing end or
training for Everest! :-)

Its better to be in shape before trying it. If you you want to have a pleasant summiting experience.

Nice pictures Miguel. Looks like you got lucky with the white out.. Its always nice to get lucky unless your not so lucky, like the skier.

Climb safe and be prepared. That's my motto,
H

I had read Muir's account and it actually helped me
find the summit. We were climbing in a white out
cloud. I moved us North along the crater and then we
were hung up on the slope when the wind gave us the
sulfur from the hot springs. Muir said they were
directly down slope and North of the summit, so I hung
a right and voila! Needless to say there was no view
from the summit.

It was one of those moments of which history buffs
dream! LOL
