Tom,
We decided not to go up this weekend - the snow report is not good.  Supposedly we have a pretty big system coming in next week.

Is anyone interested in climbing or backcountry skiing over the
holidays? I'll be near Sacramento with the grandparents babysitting.
I'm interested in checking out Sacramento Pipeworks or a quick ski
tour like maybe Castle Peak or Ralston Peak. I might also ski at
Heavenly on the 23rd or 24th before the blackout dates.

Hey Guys,

Well I'm now over a year post injury (when I fell and shattered my
foot) and doing okay, but it's pretty clear that some things aren't
going to be in my future. One of them is rock climbing. I have
decreased strength in my foot/leg and lack of mobility in my ankle.
So that means rock climbing is out. Along with ice climbing. I'm
still hoping that mountaineering will be okay along with backpacking,
but for now, those are on hold.

Don't feel sorry for me cause I'm okay with this. I've been climbing
on and off for over 30 years now, so it now "off" again. I'm able to
windsurf (my first love) and can also got back into mountain bike
riding. So I'm still out there.......

BUT the point of this message is that I have a LOT of gear that I'm
not going to use and thought some members here might find a good use
for it (or know somebody who is getting started). I'm not trying to
make a profit, just trying to get my gear out of my storage and into
the hands of somebody who will put it to use.

So here is the list. I have pictures of most of this stuff and can
send them to you upon request. The gear is located in Richmond right
off the 580 freeway at Marina Lakes Drive.

I'm pretty flexible on all this, so if you want a "package" make me
an offer :-) I'm going to put it up on craigs list in a few days,
but wanted to give CMC first shot at it :-)

John,

I'm not a CMC member, but subscribe to your e-mail
list. So you may not consider me among those most
qualified to take advantage of your offer. But the
fact is, I'm not going to take any advantage of it at
all, personally. Among the Berkeley students who work
for me and whom I get acquainted with elsewhere on
campus, I'm often recruiting new climbers,
particularly ice climbers. And, as you know, ice gear
isn't cheap. So it would be great to have a pair of
ice tools and an extra Blizzard harness--just like
mine--to lend or give away. I was even planning to buy
a kid a Momentum harness and take him out climbing
after the holidays. So if you could see your way to
selling these items to me, I will assure you that I
have no intention of profiting from the transaction,
except to the extent that your generosity will help
ease my own expenses in training some new climbing
partners.

Hey  Paul,

I can't reply directly to you, so shoot me a personal e-mail if you can.  You are first in line for the ice tools and harnesses.

I'm home after work from Mon - Wednesday at around 5:30 pm.  BUT I work at UC so something could be worked out.

I'm out of town after Thursday till Christmas.....

John,

I'm not a CMC member, but subscribe to your e-mail
list. So you may not consider me among those most
qualified to take advantage of your offer. But the
fact is, I'm not going to take any advantage of it at
all, personally. Among the Berkeley students who work
for me and whom I get acquainted with elsewhere on
campus, I'm often recruiting new climbers,
particularly ice climbers. And, as you know, ice gear
isn't cheap. So it would be great to have a pair of
ice tools and an extra Blizzard harness--just like
mine--to lend or give away. I was even planning to buy
a kid a Momentum harness and take him out climbing
after the holidays. So if you could see your way to
selling these items to me, I will assure you that I
have no intention of profiting from the transaction,
except to the extent that your generosity will help
ease my own expenses in training some new climbing
partners.

Hey Matt,

I'll post this on the group in case other's wanted to know...

Last September (2006) I was up at Yosemite for my annual Half Dome snake dike climb.  Susan, Steve, and my good friend Gail were there.  After arriving in the valley the day before the Half Dome climb, I was leading Lena's Lieback over by Church bowl.  It's a fun 5.8 lieback that I've lead more than a few times.  I was about 1/2 way up when my hand popped off the lieback.  That caused me to spin 180 degrees and I fell.  I fell face away from the wall.  My top pro held, but a lower pro pulled causing a longer than normal fall.  Susan did a great job catching me, but on the way down both my heels slammed into the wall several times.  My left heel was shattered into 5 pieces, my right heel was severely bruised.  They had to do surgery on my foot to put it back together, but my dorsa flexion (and the other side to side movement) is very limited.  Plus it still hurts after walking for a while or sitting still.  Hence the leaving the climbing scene.

I'm still hoping that I will be able to backpack (uneven terrain really aggravates it), or maybe if lucky, some light snow mountaineering (I'm keeping that gear for now) in the future....

Don't feel sorry for me cause I'm okay with this. I've been climbing

I'm sure you've already gotten a ton of emails about this stuff.. but I'd be
interested in the ice tools, couple ice screws, cams and a few biners... if
any of those are left that is. :)

Cheers!

I finally had a chance to look at the prices for stoppers and
hexencentrics online and noticed that they were cheaper than I
remember, so I'm over priced :-( So all BD hexes and stoppers are
lowered to $2 each :-) Such a deal.......

Dale Wagner, Dennis Wasserman and I are looking for a fourth member to round out our group to attempt Aconcagua. The trip dates are Jan 20- Feb 15. We want to try the Polish Glacier Direct. The False Polish Traverse to the regular route is a back-up option from our high camp. Please contact me at tony_yeary@... .

I'm thinking of heading out on a road trip to Utah and/or Colorado for a mix of skiing (BC or lift) and technical ice climbing (Provo or Ouray).  My thoughts are to leave shortly after Christmas - but flexible. Probably about a week to 10 days round trip.

Anyone interested in joining me??

Hi I'm looking for some info on Jackets. I need to replace my old
North Face Gore-tex Mtn Jacket. I used it today while it was snowing
and it soaked through, it isn't on warranty either. There are a lot
of new coatings and material on the market, some are a lot cheaper
than Gore-tex but I don't know if any are solid products or are they
hype? Who is making the best product? What is the state of the art?
What have you done well with? I'd like to find something that will
work for both winter and summer.

Maybe the DWR water repellent coating on your jacket
wore off. Just wash it with the right soap and then
get a DWR coating. I use nicwax.

I have a giretex XCR cat and it's nice, but for
climbing I haev a real lightweight single layer from
mountain hardwear. It's not goretex, it's their
coating and I like it a lot. It's also a lot cheaper
and works as well as the gore tex in my opinion.

The Gore Paclite is great. My jacket is Marmot brand with that fabric and it is super light, packable, and gets the job done. I'm not a fan of bulky jackets.
Most North Face gear is made for fashion, so give it extra scrutiny before buying.
If you like the jacket you have, try treating it with the appropriate waterproofing treatment.

Hi,

1.  Did your gortex "let in" moisture, or did it contain your own moisture?
(That is often the problem, i.e. the gortex is still working, but you do not have sufficient wicking layer/are working extra hard/combination of both).

2.  Failing that, the earlier advices about reproofing with Nixwax, or looking at a Golite are very sound points.
