Hi,

I am new to the alias. I went on a backpacking trip 2 weekends ago in the Emigrant Wilderness. Although we did not do any technical climbing (although crampons would have been useful in a couple of places :-) )  I thought it would be fun for you to compare and contrast the difference in conditions between my trip and the club trip to Tenaya Canyon with these photos:

Here is what I have going this weekend if you know anyone interested.
Nice to hang out with you all this weekend!
Harrison

A full day of climbing and instruction on the beautiful (and real!) rocks of Saint Helena . Classes last from around 10am to 4pm. Bring layered loose fitting clothing, food and water. I will need to know shoe size of anyone who is coming and a check in advance so I know who is coming and reserve your space. We meet in Calistoga at 9:30 and carpool to parking lot. Bring a pack to carry your food and gear in for the hike to the climbing spot.

October 6
This class  is an ideal course for beginners and those in need of a refresher. the day's end you'll be acquainted with the basics of rock climbing, from climbing terminology and safety to knot tying and belaying. HMA supplies shoes, harnesses, ropes, etc. Only $50.
October 7
This hands on course is a comprehensive next step for the gym climber, boulderer or even sport and beginning outdoor climber who would like to learn more about placing protection, setting anchors for top rope climbing and belay stations. Also by the end of the day we will have gone over how to make bomb proof anchors, rescue systems, safety and rescue techniques There is a ton off tricks knots and skills taught through out the day, so I advise bringing a note book. All the equipment is provided. $75

The CMC has a trip scheduled for 10/13 - 14, with space available, to climb Half Dome via the climbers approach route above Mirror Lake to the base of the North face.  The route has various published ratings from class 3 to 5.6 depending on if fixed lines are in place.  Sections can be loose and there are reportedly some bushes on the traverse left to the start of the cables.  Helmet, harness, and rock shoes are suggested/required.  Route may take four hours from Mirror Lake to the cables.  Ascending the cables is optional of course.  Descent will be via the Mist trail.

The sunset picture implies that you were still on top at that time.  Can you provide roughly what the schedule ended up being for my future use?

Hey Tom!! Tx a lot for the pics and for everything - from organizing the trip to leading the route to loaning your pants... btw did you get them back allright - we put them along with Dan's screw and Bill's prussik in a plastic bag above Dan's front tire.

It was great finally meeting you and some CMC members. Bummer we had to turn around, but Harold was wiped out by the time we got to the shrund. Thats only his second time at altitude and the first time ever with crampons on, so thanks a lot for having us with you this weekend.

I had bet youd be topping out around 7pm, but it seems like the way down was longer than expected!! In retrospect that would have been too long anyway given that i needed to be at work and reasonably awake by 7am yesterday. Great job though.

As much as id like to hike the dome, ill probably have to pass this weekend - theres a risk again the road may be closed, and id be by myself to do the 8-hour drive so its unlikely i come. Ill probably do an altitude hike in the area.

We did not get to talk about the Himalayas, but id be game next time. Im trying to work around financing to go back in the spring.

Looking forward to seeing you soon on other outings - you can sign me up already for Lee Vining ice!

Cheers,
Agnes

Hi ! I joined not too long ago the yahoo groups and I got your message
about the Dana Couloir and I am interested in taking a trip there
pretty soon after the weather it will get better. I want to tell you
that I really liked your narration of the events and the scenic route.
Can you help me please with the route there? If you have way points
for GPS that is another possibility that it would help me a lot, or
just a red line on a downloaded map would do it . I plan to solo it
but if I find a partner by then I will take the offer . Thank you much

Hi Florin, I am attaching a file of waypoints and route in NAD83 datum.  Use at your own risk as this is where I think we were or where we should have gone and is not based on our "actual" route.

Was Price rescheduled from this weekend to next weekend or is it still
on?

Anyone go up Half Dome from Mirror Lake last weekend? How were
conditions? Are the cables still up so folks can get down w/o rapping?

Hi All-

I got the magic ballot in the mail this last weekend. Usually I just
toss the ballot in the bin and not vote because I'm too lazy to go buy
stamps. It would be very nice to elect some club officers that are
active members that attract competent climbers to the CMC and actually
climb with the club. Am I alone in this thinking? We have criteria
for club membership, a ridiculous division between provisional and
regular members, but no criteria at all for eligibility to serve on
the board.

Tom Cronin - I'm going to write you in and encourage other people to
as well. I think you're one of the role models we're looking for in
CMC leadership.

Is Ron Norton still collecting the trip signups? If so, I will
contact him for info on who is showing up for the trips. We can also
look on the club email archives to see who contributes to the club in
other ways.

Hi Susan,

The Price trip is scheduled for 10/20 - 21.  No limit as to numbers so let's have a party!  Good trip for families etc.

Half Dome cables were up last weekend but they might be coming down this week.  Check with the Park Service.  Four of us went up the Death Slabs.  This is really a well defined trail with about five fixed ropes at steep sections to avoid bush wacking.

I made a mistake somewhere. The Mt. Price trip is 10/27 - 28. Sorry
about this.

Hi, here are pictures of the CMC trip last weekend to Half Dome where we ascended the climbers approach trail or "Death Slabs."   Some big wall climbers passed us on route and when we finally caught up with them they were a pitch into the "Regular Northwest  Face."  Tom

Susan,

You are not alone in your thinking.  I have to agree with your comments 100%....they are very much appreciated.   Also, with Tom's OK, I'm voting for him as well....  since the meeting is in Orange County, most people here vote at the meetings.  Tom, if you're interested in being on the board, we can put in a word for you at the meeting.  I, for one, would love to have you on the board.

To be honest with you, your thoughts regarding provisional and regular membership has been a topic of discussion for some time.  It has been brought up consistently by Tony Yeary, Steve Powell, and Jen Hopper.  The board has been absolutely slow to move on it.

Also, I believe the only criteria to serve on the board is to be a regular member.  It can be challenging to find people who want to serve on the board...which is all understandable.  We volunteer, and some of us have absolutely packed schedules, families, etc.  But we welcome all the help we can get...there is plenty to be improved...  publicity-wise, trip-wise, communication amongst members, everything, etc...

Hi Ray, thanks for posting your thoughts.  I would be happy to help out in any way I can.  I think this club provides a unique venue not offered by other climbing clubs.  I would like to explore streamlining processes while recognizing liability issues and as you point out there is a great deal that can be done regarding trips, publicity, communication etc. Does one want to make the CMC into the AAC or Sierra Club?  Probably not; but is the current state acceptable?  Sincerely, Tom Cronin
