Subject: interested in a tahoe ski lease?
icyfrostyday
Send Email Send Email

hi all - i'm looking for folks that would be interested in going in for a ski lease in the tahoe area this winter.  no house identified yet - this is a "call for interest" to see who else would be interested.  once we get a basic group i can look for a place that fits.  ideally we'd be 8-12 people, which would probably lead to a season cost per person of $800-$1000 for the full mid-december to mid-april season.  we'd all share the costs for utilities, deposit and cleaning, and agree on a guest policy and things like that.  target location would be in tahoe basin proper to be close to a variety of resorts and back-country trails; south lake, incline, or north lake.  i have no strong preference as long s price/value is good and place is conveniently located.

anyways ping me if you are interested and we can go from there.  we'd plan on meeting-up prior to make ensure none of us are serial killers.

or if you have a ski lease underway or planned already, and are looking for additional persons, let me know.

cheers - serge

Serge et all,

Not in Tahoe, but just a thought for folks: my home is 7 miles from Badger pass
ski resort in Yosemite. I get a lot of money renting it out nightly on
Thanksgiving and Xmas holidays but the rest of the season is slow. I'd entertain
a few partial month and whole month rental options. I have a first floor that is
completely open starting December 1st.

Hello gang,
The AAC has finally gotten the Fall Highball organized for this year.

Nov 19, Saturday, Adopt a crag at the Buttermilks. Meet in the parking lot just
before the Peabodies for a light breakfast at 8:30 work 9-12
Party at Mill Creek Station with a presentation by John Long and music by the
Core Shots.

Hope some of you can make it. Oddly enough November is often prime bouldering
time at the Buttermilk and other areas at Bishop. Also a great time for a late
fall hike/climb in the high mts.
The Pit, north of Bishop will be open for camping.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Hey,

I'm thinking of doing the AIARE Level 1 course this winter, preferably in the
Tahoe area and was wondering whether anyone had any recommendations on a good
company/organization which teaches the course? At the moment I'm leaning towards
ASI.

Thanks

I may be crazy but I really want to try this but can't dig up any good info.

I have ice axes, crampons, and the majority of the gear. Planning on going up
the cables route.

I'll be taking two friends with me.

Any thoughts on how you would outfit yourselves in terms of boots and garments?
Snow shoes necessary?

Thank you for any help or links!

Best,

I'm in Bali right now and a little fried from the heat so maybe I am not thinking or reading straight, but I would think that an essential part of your winter gear for climbing ( the cable route) HD might be about THREE body bags . . . I think the cables come down in the winter months for a reason.

Bob,

I have read about people tackling this route in the winter. The cables are still
in place just on the rock itself, no? Your reply was not very helpful or even
funny if that is what you were going for.

I would say that it's totally doable as the cables don't actually get removed in
the winter months.....they simply remove the posts and timbers....the cables
themselves are permanently attached but will be laying down. Now the thing to
consider seriously will be your skill and experience as well as that of your
group.

I've done it late in the season with light snow on the ground and no ice, but
not as late as December. I know of a few folks who have gone up the Snake Route
in mid-winter and descended the cables but these guys are seasoned mountaineers
who are intimately familiar with the route and the seasonal conditions there.

I would say to be honest with yourself and be willing to recognize if the
conditions are over your head. Depending on how much snow the area has received
by then snowshoes might be needed, boots/crampons may be necessary and an ice
axe wouldn't be a bad idea either way. Another thing to consider might be the
use of harnesses and connectors but then we get into the debate of whether
they'll provide a level of protection or be a distraction from your primary
focus of not falling!!! So if you decide on protection be sure you understand
the concept/style of dual connections used in Via Ferrata.

The days will be short so you'll either have to commit to doing a good chunk of
the journey by headlamp or plan on an overnight at LYV. If doing it it one big
push you'll want to travel light but be prepared for the worst weather as it can
change rapidly.

Above all else don't do anything foolish.....if the weather doesn't agree or the
conditions are beyond your ability make sure you live to do it another day on
your terms when the conditions are more favorable. Hope that helps.

When the cables come down, they are not removed. The posts that hold them are
removed, along with the boards that go across the posts and provide a welcome
resting spot. When I went up years ago in November, in dry, snow-free
conditions, we just grabbed the cables and bat-manned it up, wearing cheap work
gloves for the cold cables. If there were snow or verglas (I doubt any
reasonably climbable ice would form there) I expect it would be rather sporty.

My two cents is leather boots that are good for scrambling and suitable for
kicking into snow. I suppose you could throw a pair of climbing shoes in as
well. For "garments" I'd suggest standard Sierra snowcamping kit.

If there is deep snow early season, you'd undoubtedly find sections of posthole
conditions on the trip in; for me that would suggest snowshoes. As you probably
know, the final approach to the base of the cables has steep dropoffs; in icy
conditions that could be the crux. If you do go, be safe, and post a trip
report.

The cables themselves are still there, but the posts that hold them up are gone.
Thus the cable will be laying on the rock and covered by snow.

Adam,

Always reading posts here and there about absolute (not to say you fall into that category)  amateurs wanting advice on doing seemingly stupid things. I've even had the experience of meeting these people and having to say, "no, ain't doin' that"  . . . or they come prepared to do something with totally inadequate gear, or they have no idea how to do something in which they should have experience . . . like I wanna go from climbing TR routes in the gym to, oh, leading a route somewhere on El Capitan . . . or maybe up the backside of HD in the winter . . . (or they guy who asked if he would need warm bag; we were doing a winter climb of Shasta)

And then of course, I could be totally wrong and it's been done a zillion times by pros and beginners alike . . . My response was purely by way of your (as I recall) lack of  stated experience,  so if you and your buds have the experience and the balls, then get to it and good luck.

Ever hear the joke, something like this . . . What's the last thing a Southern boy says . . . "hey y'all, watch this"

Snowcamping Training Series
Presented By
Sierra Club Snowcamping Section

(This is not a Snowlands Network event)

Do you enjoy backpacking? In the same manner that backpacking extends day hiking, snowcamping extends your backcountry ski or snowshoe trips beyond one day. Once a year the Sierra Club offers their Snowcamping Training Series; the objective of the series is to provide experienced backpackers with the information, training, and support needed to ensure safe and enjoyable winter travel experiences.

The series is also a wonderful way to meet others who enjoy snowcamping. Those completing the course are eligible for alumni trips in following years. If you have a desire to spend a night or two out at Glacier Point and enjoy the sun setting on snow-capped Half Dome, this course may be just what you need.

This year's series begins with the orientation day on January 7, 2012 in San Francisco. This is followed by two on-the-snow trips. The first is a two-day trip and the second is a three-day trip. Unlike other courses you may find, the student to leader ratio is about 2 to 1. There are trips specifically designed for families and youth.

Although most of the students will use snowshoes, at least for the first trip, those who are proficient on backcountry skis are allowed to ski.

Is anyone interested in backcountry skiing/board/snowshoeing this weekend? I'm
thinking of this as a winter hike, like Castle Peak plus Basin, but hopefully
there will be a few good turns. I'm open to other locations too. I saw a
decent report on Rose Knob.

For those of you who aren't on snownet, you may be interested in knowing that Marmot Mountain Works in Berkeley is planned to close soon.  If you have an interest in keeping it open as a coop venture, see below.

As most of you know - Marmot in Berkeley is slated to close in March.  A few Longtime Outdoor Professional folks that work there are

considering a buy out or re-opening from the present owner.  This requires a fair amount of  $$$.  Since no one from the 1% has appeared to

facilitate this; there is a potential movement to establish a co-operative venture.  Perhaps You, someone you know, or a group of You would

be interested.  Shares would probably be in the 20K - 25K range.  If You value a store which has what you need for Skiing / Climbing /

Hiking staffed by Good, Knowledgeable people and would like to make an Investment in the viablity of such a venture, pleae contact Tom

 teepee@...    Cheers

Is anyone interested in climbing Pyramid Peak in a few weeks? After the storms
because we can't park on hwy 50 when it's snowing.

If you want to do something smaller first, this Saturday I'm planning to ski
Waterhouse Peak (low angle so it's out of avy terrain) or maybe a resort
depending on conditions.
