[Apologies if you received a similar email in duplicate – we want to make sure we don’t miss anyone]

Affiliate Network, RCs, and Climbing Advocates:

We are less than a month away from the National Access and Stewardship Summit September 30th – October 2nd. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, RSVPs are required and due by September 22nd to make sure we have enough materials, food, and space for everyone. RSVP at www.accessfund.org/summit2011.  Remember, it’s free to attend! If you travelling from afar, book your travel accommodations as soon as possible.

Attached is an updated agenda of the Summit. It includes additional info on workshops, presenters, driving directions, and accommodation info. There will be 17 workshops to choose from, hands-on trail work training at Golden Cliffs, a taco truck, and much more.

Please share this email with other volunteers and board members in your LCO. Also attached is a flyer to share with your climbing friends or post at local gyms.

Attendees are responsible for their own travel and accommodations but we are here to help. This year, we were lucky to award travel scholarships to 14 volunteers thanks to additional support from CLIF Bar. This application process is now closed but we hope to incorporate this again in future summits. The Access Fund also rented a house in Golden and Boulder that will cost attendees approximately $30/night for Friday and Saturday night. There are a couple openings still – shoot us an email if you are interested. If you are local to the Front Range and have space for an attendee September 30-October 2, let us know if you are willing to host a climber.

This summit would not be possible without all of our presenters, panelists, volunteers, regional coordinators, and affiliate climbing organizations. We also would like to thank CLIF Bar as the leading sponsor and Colorado Mountain Club for donated the conference space. Hope to see you there!

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend,

Joe Sambataro

American Himalayan Foundation Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary with Dinner on October 26, 2011, San Francisco

Our good friends at the American Himalayan Foundation are celebrating its 30 year anniversary this year with a very special and worthwhile event dedicated to making small miracles happen: the American Himalayan Foundation’s Annual Dinner, Oct 26, 2011 in San Francisco.
In attendance will be an impressive summit party (in both senses!) with 40+ ascents among them – from the first Americans on Everest, Jim Whittaker and Tom Hornbein, to Ed Viesturs, Pete Athans, Jon Krakauer, Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and the world record holder Apa Sherpa (all of whom are AAC members by the way).
Also in attendance will be a summiter of a different kind: Dr. Ashok Banskota, Director of the Hospital and Rehab center for Disabled Children in Kathmandu, whose team works miracles for young lives every day, mending the broken limbs and bodies of Nepal’s poorest disabled children.
It will be a very entertaining evening, full of tall tales – and perhaps some poignant ones —and a few surprises. Doing good, being kind, having fun. For information or reservations please email our friend Norbu Tenzing at Norbu@... or call him at 415-288-7250.

This will be a fun event for a good cause and an opportunity to visit with others who share an interest in the Himalaya.

Hello all,

I'm helping the American Himalayan Foundation get the word out to the climbing community about the American Himalayan Foundation’s Annual Dinner, Oct 26, 2011.

In attendance will be an impressive summit party (in both senses!) with 40+ ascents among them – from the first Americans on Everest, Jim Whittaker and Tom Hornbein, to Ed Viesturs, Pete Athans, Jon Krakauer, Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and the world record holder Apa Sherpa.

It will be a very entertaining evening, full of tall tales – and perhaps some poignant ones —and a few surprises. Doing good, being kind, having fun. Please email or call our friend Norbu Tenzing at Norbu@... or call 415-288-7250.

It's $200 per person for a ticket, which is steep for the average dirtbag climber, but you'll get a letter with the amount that is tax deductible as the net proceeds go toward the non-profit efforts (last year it was somewhere around $135 of the ticket price).

Thank you,

AAC SNS Looking for New Section Leader(s) -2nd Notice

AAC Sierra Nevada Header
LOOKING FOR NEW SECTION LEADER(S) FOR THE SIERRA NEVADA SECTION BEGINNING JANUARY 2012 - 2nd Notice

I have already received some responses of interest to my first email on this subject, and thought I would send out another in case anyone missed it the first time around and was interested in leading, or assisting in leading, the Section in the future.

As you have seen from the recent mailings from the AAC and from the new AAC website, the Club has embarked on an exciting five year plan to make it even more relevant to all kinds of climbers and to offer even more benefits of membership.  One of the significant parts of this plan is to de-centralize the management structure and encourage more grassroots organization and leadership, all with the support from the national office in Golden.

This coincides with the expiration of my third and final year as Sierra Nevada Section Chair in December 2011.  Therefore, we are looking for an interested individual or individuals to carry on leading the SNS, either in its present form or under a different structure if there is interest in doing so.

There are many possibilities for future leadership of our Section under the new plan.  We can continue as we have in recent years as one large geographical section with one “Chairperson†who is supported by our many wonderful volunteers.  Alternatively, we can retain the large geography, but be led by a “Committee†of members who continue to rely on our many wonderful volunteers.  Another option if there is interest is to decentralize the Section by developing new regional “Chapters†which would operate independently and have their own leadership, and be supported by the national office.  This is your Club and your Section and the choice is yours.

By the way, the AAC just hired John Bragg as Community Programs Director and will be hiring a new Regional Coordinator for the West Coast by the end of October 2011.  A large part of the responsibility of this new Regional Coordinator position is to provide logistical, operational, and administrative support for our Section and its leadership to maximize the benefits to our members.  Thus, the new leadership of the Sierra Nevada Section can count on valuable guidance and assistance from this new Regional Coordinator, in addition to the generous support of our many Section volunteers.

I have enjoyed being the Section Chair the last three years and appreciate the generous assistance of all the Section volunteers.  I am very excited about the new direction of the Club.  Here is your chance to get more involved and take the Section to the next level.

Please contact me if you are interested in a leadership position for the Sierra Nevada Section and/or if you have suggestions for how the Section is led and operated in the future.  [tcburch@..., or at (415) 302-0800]

Thanks.

hi all - i'm looking for folks that would be interested in going in for a ski lease in the tahoe area this winter.  no house identified yet - this is a "call for interest" to see who else would be interested.  once we get a basic group i can look for a place that fits.  ideally we'd be 8-12 people, which would probably lead to a season cost per person of $800-$1000 for the full mid-december to mid-april season.  we'd all share the costs for utilities, deposit and cleaning, and agree on a guest policy and things like that.  target location would be in tahoe basin proper to be close to a variety of resorts and back-country trails; south lake, incline, ornorth lake.  i have no strong preference as long s price/value is good and place is conveniently located.

anyways ping me if you are interested and we can go from there.  we'd plan on meeting-up prior to make ensure none of us are serial killers.

or if you have a ski lease underway or planned already, and are looking for additional persons, let me know.

Serge et all,

Not in Tahoe, but just a thought for folks: my home is 7 miles from Badger pass
ski resort in Yosemite. I get a lot of money renting it out nightly on
Thanksgiving and Xmas holidays but the rest of the season is slow. I'd entertain
a few partial month and whole month rental options. I have a first floor that is
completely open starting December 1st.

Hey,

I'm thinking of doing the AIARE Level 1 course this winter, preferably in the
Tahoe area and was wondering whether anyone had any recommendations on a good
company/organization which teaches the course? At the moment I'm leaning towards
ASI.

Thanks
-John

I may be crazy but I really want to try this but can't dig up any good info.

I have ice axes, crampons, and the majority of the gear. Planning on going up
the cables route.

I'll be taking two friends with me.

Any thoughts on how you would outfit yourselves in terms of boots and garments?
Snow shoes necessary?

Thank you for any help or links!

Best,

Adam

I'm in Bali right now and a little fried from the heat so maybe I am not thinking or reading straight, but I would think that an essential part of your winter gear for climbing ( the cable route) HD might be about THREE body bags . . . I think the cables come down in the winter months for a reason.

Bob,

I have read about people tackling this route in the winter. The cables are still
in place just on the rock itself, no? Your reply was not very helpful or even
funny if that is what you were going for.

I would say that it's totally doable as the cables don't actually get removed in
the winter months.....they simply remove the posts and timbers....the cables
themselves are permanently attached but will be laying down. Now the thing to
consider seriously will be your skill and experience as well as that of your
group.

I've done it late in the season with light snow on the ground and no ice, but
not as late as December. I know of a few folks who have gone up the Snake Route
in mid-winter and descended the cables but these guys are seasoned mountaineers
who are intimately familiar with the route and the seasonal conditions there.

I would say to be honest with yourself and be willing to recognize if the
conditions are over your head. Depending on how much snow the area has received
by then snowshoes might be needed, boots/crampons may be necessary and an ice
axe wouldn't be a bad idea either way. Another thing to consider might be the
use of harnesses and connectors but then we get into the debate of whether
they'll provide a level of protection or be a distraction from your primary
focus of not falling!!! So if you decide on protection be sure you understand
the concept/style of dual connections used in Via Ferrata.

The days will be short so you'll either have to commit to doing a good chunk of
the journey by headlamp or plan on an overnight at LYV. If doing it it one big
push you'll want to travel light but be prepared for the worst weather as it can
change rapidly.

Above all else don't do anything foolish.....if the weather doesn't agree or the
conditions are beyond your ability make sure you live to do it another day on
your terms when the conditions are more favorable. Hope that helps.
