How was the Casaval Ridge trip? I shot some footage of Memorial Day weekend weather on Shasta.

Enjoy it.

I’m planning on going there again in a couple of weeks, if anyone interested to join me. Also in July to Rainier and perhaps Adams.

Hi everyone -

I have 4 permits for 3 nights up the N. Fork of Lone Pine creek into the Whitney
zone next weekend. At this moment, I'm back to zero partners.

This is the trailhead for the Boy Scout and Iceberg Lakes, technical routes on
Whitney and Russell, as I'm sure you all know. I went up that way a couple of
years back with Tom and a CMG party, we did the Mountaineer's Route, it was
awesome.

The permits are for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, entry date 6/10, exit
date 6/13. This should give a little cushion for weather.

I'm a little uncertain of my plans at this moment. If you have a partner and
want to do your own thing, that's fine with me. If I go up on my own, I'll be
taking the easy way up, nothing too technical. For anything technical, I'm not
fully qualified to lead, but I'm happy and comfortable following. For some of
that stuff there still may be too much snow.

Drop me a line if you may be interested. Sorry for somewhat short notice.

Thanks,

-Joe

Subject: Desert Peaks Section Opportunity

Hi, Friends and Fellow Peakbaggers and Climbers:

I am the new Chairman of the Desert Peaks Section in the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club having started my term just two weeks ago.

I was going through our membership list and noticed that you have been on a Desert Peaks Section trip or you are a member of the California Mountaineering Group but you are not on the Desert Peaks Section subscriber list. I thought I would reach out to you and see if you would consider checking out our Section by subscribing to our bi-monthly DESERT SAGE newsletter or, if qualified, to become a member (see attached).

To make it attractive for you to learn about our Section I would like to offer you a free year of either a paid Membership or a free year of being a subscriber! And if you participate on one or more of our scheduled events /climbs over the next year I'll even cover you for another year! (I'm looking to expand our membership base to those like you who love to climb mountains so I'm investing in the future of the DPS by personally underwriting the cost of this program.)

Please open the attached Word document, fill it out, email it back to me, and I’ll get your subscription going. I encourage you to use this offer as an opportunity to look into extending your climbing season by participating in a trip or two with the Desert Peaks Section following the Sierra climbing season.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have about this offer or about the Desert Peaks Section.

If you want to read up more about the Desert Peaks Section please visit our website at: http://angeles.sierraclub.org/dps/

On behalf of our Desert Peaks Section Management Team for 2011-2012 thank you in advance for your interest.

Bob Wyka,

Chairman, Desert Peaks Section

Cell: 310-570-9307

Desert Peaks Section Background

The Desert Peaks Section is an outings activity section in the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club with a membership of about 230. Our section encourages members to explore and enjoy the desert mountain ranges of the Southwest, become familiar with their scenic resources, stimulate interest in climbing these vast desert ranges in the interest of preserving their desert resources, enlist public interest and cooperation in protecting desert areas and foster among our members the purposes of the Sierra Club. The oldest peak-climbing section in the largest Chapter of the Sierra Club, the Desert Peaks Section was informally organized in 1941 and formally organized in October 1945.

Our activities include backpacking, day hiking and special events such as our Annual Banquet and the Fall Chili Cookout. During the fall, winter, and spring, we sponsor monthly social gatherings in the metropolitan Los Angeles area.  While focused on climbing and hiking, our outings have a social element around the evening campfire. Travel to the road heads for our trips often requires vehicles with adequate ground clearance and occasionally 4WD. Transportation to the outings can be arranged by informal carpools from the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Our section sponsors outings in the deserts of California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah throughout the year, although the summer season is generally our lowest activity period. Currently 96 desert mountains, throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Mexico are on our Desert Peaks List. The annual banquet in the Los Angeles area is held in May of each year and the Fall Chili Cookout, a desert car camp, generally in October.

All are welcome to come with us on our climbs in the desert. Anyone may subscribe to our bi-monthly newsletter, the Desert Sage. The Desert Sage includes a schedule of upcoming trips with information on how to sign up with the leaders, write-ups of recently led trips, and other articles of general interest about the deserts of the Southwest. The Section membership application form is attached. Those who would like to become members of the Desert Peaks Section may do so after climbing 6 peaks on the list and joining the Sierra Club.

Hi Paul,

Be assured, we have a plan for organized groups. We will be educating them
to just put the name of the group (ie: american alpine club) as the
primary occupant name when the reservation is made (for future
reservations). For this year, please know that we are well aquainted with
these groups, and they will not have any trouble getting into their sites.
Our goal is to find those who fraudulently purchased sites, not hassle
those with legitimate reservations. Any concerned groups can also call the
campground offices directly (number is on their confirmation), and we can
put a note on the reservation. But, for the future, just advise these
groups to start putting the group name as the primary occupant.

Hope this helps.

Dear Mike, Missy, and Mark:

The new campground reservation rules posted below will not work for
groups, including the three major climbing clubs in the Bay Area and the
smaller clubs at colleges and universities. Because there are no group
sites in the Valley, and only a handfull in Tuolumne Meadows, groups such
as ours typically have to muster a group of people to make reservations for
individual sites. Our club typically has to get four individual sites to
accommodate club members on a trip. And because these reservations are
made months in advance, the individual making a given reservation may or
may not be able to go on the trip for which they secured a reservation for
the group.

Please give me the phone and email for the person responsible for this
proposal and who has authority to make accommodations for groups.

The way in which this was handled certainly contrasts markedly with the
careful and consultative manner in which the Half Dome permits were
handled.

Thank you, Paul

e Yosemite National Park announces three changes to the way in which
m visitors make camping reservations for campgrounds operated by the
o National Park Service (NPS) in the park. These changes are being
v implemented in an effort to thwart and discourage misuse of the
e camping reservation system that all visitors currently use when making
d campground reservations within Yosemite National Park.
 t
o The first change will require all visitors checking into a campsite in
f the park to show identification upon arrival at the Campground
i Reservation Office. Currently, campers do not need to present any form
l of identification to secure their reserved campsite. However, this new
e identification policy is being implemented to make sure that the
: person who arrives at the campground office is the same person who
p made the campground reservation. This new procedure will commence for
 i all check-ins beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, June 8, 2011.
 c
1 Also starting tomorrow, campground reservation holders will no longer
4 be able to change the name of the person on the campground
1 reservation. Previously, the original name on the reservation could be
4 changed online on the reservation contractor's website. This would not
5 change any components of the existing reservation. However, this
. change precludes the ability to change the name on a reservation once
g the reservation is made. There is a $10 cancellation fee for any
i reservation that is cancelled. Further, the same reservation under a
f different name is not guaranteed.
 )
The final change to the campground reservation system will be
implemented later this summer. This alteration will change the way in
which cancelled reservations are released back into the system.
Currently, once a reservation is cancelled, the campsite is put back
online to be purchased. However, under the newly implemented system,
the campsites that become available can only be reserved by calling
the campground reservation phone number. There is no date available
   for this change.

All campsites reserved in Yosemite National Park are reserved through
a contractor, Active Works. The website is www.recreation.gov. They
can also be reached at 1-877-444-6777. The park is implementing these
changes to ensure equity and fairness for visitors wishing to make a
campsite reservation within Yosemite National Park.

I'm looking for buddies who would like to climb Rainier in July. I have 11 days off (from Friday to Monday) which I want to spend on mountaineering.  My ideal routes would be Kautz Glacier and Liberty Ridge. However, if you are not that confident we might skip Liberty and do Kautz twice or something else instead. (We could climb Adams Glacier on Mt Adams.) Also to break a long drive we might day-hike Mt. McLoughlin and/or Mt. Shasta.

If you have limited or no experience climbing steeper (icy) slopes or traversing glaciers, we can go to Shasta (e.g. Whitney Glacier) to practice those skills prior to the Rainier trip.

I'll make a trip-report-video to commemorate our escapade.

If this sounds interesting to you, let me know.

This hands on course is a comprehensive next step for the gym climber, boulderer
or even sport and outdoor climber who would like to learn more about placing
protection, setting anchors for top rope climbing and belay stations. Also by
the end of the day we will have gone over how to make bomb proof anchors, rescue
systems, safety and rescue techniques and escaping the belay. There is a ton off
tricks, knots and skills taught through out the day; so I advise bringing a note
book. All the protection is provided. $75

Please join us for a full day of climbing and instruction. Classes are on Mt.
Saint Helena and last from around 10am to 4pm. Bring layered loose fitting
clothing, food and water. Bring a pack to carry your food and gear for the hike
into the climbing area.

In case any of you would like to connect with less technical peak baggers, there is an informal BBQ this Tuesday in the South Bay.  We have an annual gear swap and this year I am adding a gear drive component to donate the leftover gear.  Happy to take any gear donations even if you can't make it (my contact info below).  More deets on the benefiting organization below but hiking, backpacking, snow and glacier gear are needed (the mountains of the Rwenzoris in Uganda are glaciated).
Thanks!

Hello everyone!

Our next meeting is the annual BBQ and Gear Swap on July 12 in Saratoga.  If you would like to RSVP or see who else is going, you can check out the details on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=136575846403732) in addition to the usual listing on the website (www.peakclimbing.org).

Be sure to start combing through your gear closet for items you no longer want but think others could use.  Most folks bring things they are willing to give away for free, but feel free to put price tags on valuable items.

UPDATE - Each year there is quite a bit of gear that does not find a home.  Instead of storing in my bursting gear closet, I'll be collecting the overflow and donating it.  This year the donations will go to Climb High Foundation (www.climbhighfoundation.org).  Climb High is dedicated to teaching women in developing nations the skills that will enable them to benefit from climbing and trekking-related tourism. They have been focusing on Uganda for the last five years or so (hence my previous plans to go to Uganda and hire these women before my accident derailed the trip).  So take the time to really clean out your gear closet to help those less fortunate in other countries.

Hope to see you there!
-Emilie

More Info
The July meeting is our annual BBQ and gear exchange on July 12 at 7:00 at Wildwood Park BBQ area A.

Bring a dish to share, your own specialty, or choose according to first letter of your last name:
A-G Main course (think grilled items)
H-M Appetizer
N-S Veggie or Fruit side
T-Z Dessert

Bring your own beverage (alcohol is ok), $3 to cover reservation and BBQ coals, dinnerware, friends, family, and used gear.
Bring the kids to climb on the play structures.

BBQ should be hot by 6 pm for families on an early dinner schedule. Bring whatever gear you find cluttering your garage or closet. Someone may want or need it. You can even charge something for it, but experience indicates that the lower the price the more likely for a sale. Free is best!

Directions: From 280: Exit at De Anza Blvd; go south for about 5 miles, crossing Hwy 85 about half way to Saratoga. The road changes name at Prospect Rd to Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd. At the village traffic light at the intersection of DeAnza Blvd, Big Basin Way, Saratoga Ave and Saratoga Los Gatos Road, turn right on Big Basin Way and drive part way through downtown Saratoga. Turn right on 4th St, the first through street on the right. The park is at the bottom of the hill on your right. Park in park parking (appears to be mostly hotel parking for Saratoga Inn), or park across the road, or along the road, where-ever parking is allowed.

A pieceof info not commonly known, Ammon only had 70% use of his shoulder to start. He was seriously injured a month before he started this climb. What's great about this that Kait and Ammon are REALLY nice humble people. It's easy to root for good folks.

ROCK ICE Mag report:
Wings of Steel—likely El Cap’s hardest aid route and unrepeated since its first ascent 29 years ago—has finally been repeated.  After repulsing accomplished big-wall veterans including Rob Slater and Kevin Thaw, Wings of Steel has been climbed by the “El Cap Pirate†Ammon McNeely and his partner/girlfriend Kait Barber. At this writing the duo have completed Wings proper and are exiting via the Aquarian Wall.

Wings of Steel is El Cap’s most controversial route. Mark Smith and Richard Jensen—two unknown Valley “outsidersâ€â€”arrived in 1982 to climb the apparently blank Great Slab to the left of the Salathe Wall. They found compact granite on a low-angle face that could be climbed—barely—using tiny Leeper pointed hooks on nearly invisible rugosities. So impossible did the climbing appear that numerous Yosemite locals assumed that Smith and Jensen were drilling and chipping their way up the face.

Disgusted by the perceived desecration, the team's snail-like pace and the fact that Smith and Jensen hadn't paid their proper dues by repeating El Cap's hard big walls of the day, local climbers threatened Smith and Jensen, verbally abused them and in a night-time raid, pulled their fixed rope on the first pitch and defecated on it. Rather than bailing, however, an angered Smith and Jensen reclimbed the start and completed the route in a month-long continuous push requiring horrendous whippers and a dislocated ankle.

What followed may be the greatest character assassination campaign in climbing history, with Jensen and Smith purported to be villains, scoundrels and liars. In spite of Jensen and Smith's reporting in excruciating detail of the route’s hook and hole count, Wings of Steel was dismissed as a bolt and hook ladder. Since their ascent, Jensen and Smith have been bashed in guidebooks, texts and magazines, and relentlessly slandered through word of mouth and in internet forums.

Preliminary reports now suggest Smith and Jensen told the truth about everything, including the 15 or so “micro-enhancements†they made to avoid drilling rivets. The hooking is reportedly “sick†and insanely hard above long and dangerous runouts. Master speed climber McNeely required six hours and took three 30-foot falls on the first pitch alone. Higher up he also took many falls including at least one 50-footer to work out the hooking sequences. In one fall, McNeely dislocated his shoulder and reset it himself to persevere on what may be the most difficult big-wall route ever established.

Hey everyone -

I hope you all are enjoying our somewhat belated summer. The resulting
conditions have been quite interesting and fun - picturesque, certainly.

Next up on my schedule - weather and work permitting - is a permit for 2 up the
North Fork of Big Pine in the Palisades area, entry Thursday July 28, exit
Sunday July 31 - 3 nights. The partner I had in mind can't make it.

I went up that trail a couple of weeks ago on my own, hit all the lakes and
hiked up Cloudripper. My first time in the area - beautiful! Left to my own
devices, this time I would probably head south to Sam Mack and check out that
sector. There are a lot of cool rocks and points around there, I'm not solely
obsessed with bagging 14'ers.

Solo I stick to third class, with a partner I'll do stuff more technical. I can
follow competently, but I'm not entirely confident leading - I have a small rack
but I need to learn more about placing gear and building anchors. I've climbed
with a few other folks here, they would probably vouch for me.

Hit me up if you might be interested. I think you can send me email by clicking
on my name; my address is my surname at gmail.

Thanks! - Joe

To: emilie cortes <mountaineerchica@...>

Dear emilie,

The natural beauty and sense of adventure found at Red Rock Canyon, outside of Las Vegas, NV, is in danger of forever being diminished by the "Gypsum Reclamation Concept Plan," (GRCP) a development plan atop a former 2,500 acre gypsum mine known as Blue Diamond Hill. Act now to conserve the climbing environment at Red Rocks!

The GRCP is a high density multi-use plan to construct a small city for approximately 22,000 people, complete with 7,200 multi-family residences, education facilities, retail stores, and related amenities that will forever diminish the natural beauty and sense of adventure at Red Rocks. The proposed location, Blue Diamond Hill, is clearly visible from all major formations at Red Rocks.

On Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 9:00 am, the Clark County Commissioners meet to approve or deny the massive development proposal. Your input is required to help save Red Rock Canyon.

More information can be found at Save Red Rock Canyon.

The most important things climbers can do are submit comments opposing the plan and attend the meeting on August 17th at the Clark County Government Center, Commission Chambers, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89155 (702-455-4431). Let the commissioners know how important it is to preserve the rural nature of Red Rock Canyon.

Click the "Take Action Now" link below to go to the Action Alert and use the letter-writing tool to let the commissioners know that you disapprove of the Gypsum Reclamation Concept Plan.

Comments Needed by August 17th.

Sincerely,

Your friends at the Access Fund

Sierra Club Peak Climbing Section Monthly Meeting
Georgina Miranda: Climb Take Action on Everest

08/09/2011 7:30 pm

Peninsula Conservation Center, Palo Alto, CA

In what has become an annual tradition – the Everest slideshow – this year’s presenter fits with Madame Chair’s “Year of the Woman” theme. Join us as Georgina Miranda shares her experience on Everest’s South Side this past Spring. Georgina was climbing Everest as part of her Climb Take Action 7 Summits Challenge.

After reading an article in Glamour in 2007 about the violence against women in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, Georgina founded Climb Take Action in order to empower women in the region by climbing to raise funds and awareness to their suffering. Thousands of women have been neglected, murdered, abducted, brutally raped, tortured, and overall forgotten. Congo Wars have claimed more lives than any conflict since the end of World War II, yet the crisis has received little attention outside of central Africa.

Georgina is a native Los Angelino currently residing in San Francisco. She is a business woman by day (MBA from Loyola Marymount and a full-time management consultant) and an adventurer by night having climbed all around the world, including five of the world’s tallest peaks on each continent.

Come hear Georgina’s riveting story of her Everest climb and about the amazing efforts she has made as an individual to make the world a better place.

We are less than a month away from the National Access and Stewardship Summit September 30th – October 2nd. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, RSVPs are required and due by September 22nd to make sure we have enough materials, food, and space for everyone. RSVP at www.accessfund.org/summit2011.  Remember, it’s free to attend! If you travelling from afar, book your travel accommodations as soon as possible.

Attached is an updated agenda of the Summit. It includes additional info on workshops, presenters, driving directions, and accommodation info. There will be 17 workshops to choose from, hands-on trail work training at Golden Cliffs, a taco truck, and much more.

Please share this email with other volunteers and board members in your LCO. Also attached is a flyer to share with your climbing friends or post at local gyms.

Attendees are responsible for their own travel and accommodations but we are here to help. This year, we were lucky to award travel scholarships to 14 volunteers thanks to additional support from CLIF Bar. This application process is now closed but we hope to incorporate this again in future summits. The Access Fund also rented a house in Golden and Boulder that will cost attendees approximately $30/night for Friday and Saturday night. There are a couple openings still – shoot us an email if you are interested. If you are local to the Front Range and have space for an attendee September 30-October 2, let us know if you are willing to host a climber.

This summit would not be possible without all of our presenters, panelists, volunteers, regional coordinators, and affiliate climbing organizations. We also would like to thank CLIF Bar as the leading sponsor and Colorado Mountain Club for donated the conference space. Hope to see you there!

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend,
