Bridges Rock gym in El Cerrito is offering a summer sale. You can climb all
summer for $100 and without any BS registration fee. That's $30 a month people!
So if you are sick of paying $70 a month to go to a gym that is REALLY CROWDED
every night, think about making the switch. It's a 5 minute walk from the El
Cerrito Bart station and right off of 80/580, behind the Ranch 99 mall.

Next week, a small group of backpackers will explore the
wilderness in Kings Canyon. The route will take us past Blackcap
Basin and south along the White Divide. Finally, we'll hike down the Middle Fork
thru the Tehipeti Valley. We'll probably go over a few miles of snow, so gaiters
are recommended.

Hi folks, it is this time of the year again - my traditional time for climbing.
I really would like to do some climbing around the July 4th weekend and would
love to hear from anyone who has similar plans. May be we can organize a whole
group event? I would love to go climbing to some new place where I have never
been before.
I am taking Friday off so will have in total 4 days available.

For those of you who do not know me: I am 5-9 to 5-11 climber, originally from
Europe, now enjoying CA. I do not have a full rack, unfortunately. I have only
very basic stuff - harness, shoes and couple of other pieces. I am young
professional and work in the financial district in SF. Can carpool with someone
else or drive myself.

Looking forward to hear any ideas.

Thanks,
Ivan

TITLE
Jeff Schaffer: A college student's climbing in Yosemite and elsewhere,
1963-1969.

PRESENTATION
The 1960s supposedly were Yosemite Valley's golden years, when many of the
classic big-wall routes were first done. In 1960, you protected with soft-metal
pitons; in the mid-60s with Chouinard's diverse array of strong pitons; then in
the late-60s, with primitive nuts (stoppers). You belayed with the rope around
your back, and got rope burns when the leader fell. You rappelled with the rope
running through your crotch and up around your shoulder and neck (more rope
burns). Jeff will show slides of his 1960s climbing, and will have an assortment
of vintage pitons and other gear, including an old Goldline rope once owned by
Royal Robbins.

BIO
Jeff (Jeffrey P. Schaffer, much better known for his dozen-plus Wilderness Press
guidebooks) began boulding, at age 20, at Stony Point (southern California) in
1963 with his twin brother, Greg, and began leading in Yosemite Valley in summer
1964. In summer 1965, after being tossed out of Peace Corps training for being
physically unfit (epilepsy, which he never had), he joined Greg for a few weeks
in Yosemite Valley and became hooked. (Back then, there were only about 18
climbers in the Valley.) While at Cal Berkeley, they bouldered weekly with Galen
Rowell and others at Indian Rock, and got up to the Valley or to Pinnacles when
time and expenses (poor college students) would allow. They established several
first ascents - easy by today's standards - and freed several aid routes. Greg's
"claim to fame" (?) was outbouldering Royal Robbins (Jeff could only match
Royal). Our longest first ascent was Wild Wild West, about 1500 feet up Glacier
Point Apron to the headwall. Our most climbed first ascent was Pine Line, near
the nose of El Capitan (and very briefly appearing in the Star Trek IV film).

With college over in 1969, Jeff gradually lost climbing partners as all moved
onward to careers, and by 1975, gave up climbing. However, in 1991 he began
climbing occasionally at City Rock climbing gym in Emeryville (the first in the
Bay Area proper), and slowly, by 1996, was again getting the climbing bug,
especially once Berkeley Ironworks opened. In 2003, at age 60, Greg and Jeff
became the oldest twins to co-lead Devils Tower, Wyoming, and in 2009, at age 66
(now with Social Security), embarked on a 40-day, 11,500-mile trip across
America, attempting to do 66 routes. They ended up with 136, most of them short
outdoor routes (one 1100 feet) and gym routes. At 9 gyms, they rated them up to
***** (5 stars), the highest being **** (a 10th gym was too bad to bother even
climbing). Greg and Jeff co-designed Napa's Rockzilla climbing gym in November
2005, which opened in February 2006. Since then, Jeff (under the monicker Mad
Dog) has set about 400 routes, from easy 5.0 up to his current (old age 67)
climbing limit, 5.10d.

The main road through Lassen opens Friday. I want to ski Lassen and Shasta
within the next two weeks. Unfortunately I'm probably only available during the
week. I'm thinking about a night at Lassen, skiing Lassen, a night at Bunny
Flats, an early slow day hike of Shasta, finishing with a descent of the west
face. However, the ridge routes are still in shape so I'm open to other
options. Let me know if you're interested in either peak.

As some of you know I work for UC. We need WOMEN to participate in a study of
driving behavior. You'll get $100 for your time and free gasoline for two
weeks. Just go to the link below and fill out the online form.

Scott

California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH), a research unit at
the University of California, Berkeley, is currently seeking Bay Area commuters
to volunteer to participate in a two week study on driving behavior.

We are looking for commuters who:
• Have a valid California driving license
• Are 23 to 65 years old
• Have no DUIs on their driving record
• Have no moving violations in the last 3 years
• Are not currently taking any medications that impair your driving ability
• Normally commute 5 days per week on Bay Area freeways (for at least 30
miles each way) where you may occasionally encounter slow traffic

This is a study using a prototype traffic alert system that warns drivers when
they are approaching a section of freeway that is moving significantly slower
than their current speed. This new type of driver awareness system will
hopefully take the surprise out of encountering slowed or stopped traffic on the
freeway, resulting in fewer panic stops and fewer end-of-queues, rear-end
crashes. The two-week study will not interfere with your daily routine, but it
does require approximately two hours on a Saturday afternoon at the beginning of
the study and two hours on a Saturday morning at the end of the study.

INCENTIVES & COMPENSATION

The costs for gasoline for the research vehicle, while in your care, will be
provided by the project. Additionally, a $100 stipend will be paid for your
participation in the study.

If interested please visit:

http://www.networkedtraveler.org/dev/SituationalAwareness

Then contact the Recruitment Coordinator by e-mail or telephone at your earliest
convenience. Up to 20 volunteers are needed.

Dear Access Fund Supporter,

We need your help to restore the unique wilderness climbing opportunities found only in Arches National Park!

In 2006, the National Park Service banned the use of fixed anchors after the Delicate Arch controversy and effectively banned climbing on many of the Park's historic towers. The restriction they placed on permanent climbing hardware was a reaction to a random controversy and not a planning process that demonstrated a need to limit these necessary climbing tools.

Currently, Arches National Park is developing a Climbing and Canyoneering Plan that will consider various management scenarios for climbing in Arches including fixed anchors, new routes via permit, access trails, resource protection, group sizes, and commercial guiding.

Help us urge park planners to protect the historic and unique climbing opportunities at Arches National Park by visiting our website and using our letter-writing tool. The Park Service is looking for your unique thoughts on how to balance climbing with wilderness character and park resources.

Sincerely,

Your Friends at the Access Fund

Hello CMG folks. Here a fun event you'll want to check out:

The popular Craggin' Classic—a touring climbing festival put on by the American
Alpine Club (AAC) and sponsored by Patagonia will land on Donner Summit near
Truckee, August 27-29. The festival is open to everyone and is FREE! Of course
it features the opportunity for rock climbing on the superb granite crags of
Donner Summit, as well as skills clinics by local guide service Alpine Skills
International (ASI), a big party starting at 6 PM Saturday, August 28 at the
Sugar Bowl Mt. Judah Lodge with live music, free beer and burgers, gear raffle,
and a slideshow by Tommy Caldwell.

Here are the details for the party Saturday, August 28th at 6 PM at the Mt.
Judah Lodge at Sugar Bowl:

• Live music by Dawn Patrol, an acoustic trio of local climbers Mike Schwartz,
Eric Perlman and Bela Vadasz
• FREE beer, burgers and side dishes prepared by AAC and Patagonia ambassador
Brittany Griffith
• AAC recognition of Granite Chief for its generous contribution to the climbing
community by funding a toilet at the popular Snowshed Wall roadside climbing
area for several seasons
• Gear raffle with items from Patagonia, Truckee's own The BackCountry, and ASI.
Any proceeds will go toward funding the Snowshed Wall toilet in the future.
• Slide show by world renowned rock climber and Patagonia ambassador Tommy
Caldwell, who has free climbed Yosemite's El Capitan more than anyone.

Everyone is welcome, and no advance reservation is needed. Attendees are asked
to please help us cut down on waste by bringing your own reusable cup, fork and
plate.

FREE camping for Friday and Saturday nights, August 27th and 28th, is available
on Donner Summit at the Sugar Bowl Academy and Bela Vadasz's adjacent property.
Within walking distance of the climbing. Reservations required. Email Dana
Richardson at drichardson@...

FYI, the skills clinics are full. Camping is still available.

Good fun to be had. Hope to see you there!

Hey,

I hope everyone is enjoying the great climbing weather.

My original partner for a climbing roadtrip from SF to Denver didn't workout, so even though it's last minute, I'm wondering if anyone else may be free to go on such a trip. I have to be in the Denver metro area for a wedding over Labor Day weekend, and I thought it would be fun to drive out there and hit up climbing spots along the 80--Tahoe, SLC, and Vedauwoo. I'm totally open to other ideas, but those were my initial thoughts. Feel free to drop me a line if you're interested in figuring something out.

I have been at the last two American Alpine Club, Sierra Nevada Section,
gatherings this year. The one in Tuolumne had a great turn out of local members.
It was great to sit around the fire and tell stories about ones latest climbing
exploits and comment on world affairs. Then meet up and go climbing the next
day. The group camp site and booze was paid for by the club as well as the
snacks served up by the section chair Tom Burch.

Soon after that the American Alpine Club did it again. This time at Donner
Summit. But wow, what a treat this was. The camping was free for members, two
workshops by climbing legend Bela Vadasz of ASI and Dave Riggs; free. But here
is the clincher. A free dinner, free beer, free music and a free killer
presentation by Tommy Caldwell. Not just for members but for anyone who showed
up, free. And there was over a hundred people feed and enjoying themselves.
Sunday morning back at camp Britney Griffin made chocolate crepes for everyone
present.

In the effort to create community, the AAC out did themselves proving beyond
doubt the concern they have for us as a whole not just AAC members. Their
efforts to recognize a need and to organize events for all of us. This has
galvanized my desire to be part of an ever changing seriously diverse group of
people called climber as well as remain a member of the club.

I have in the past used my dirt bag status as an excuse to not pay tribute. But
more and more I am seeing that the dues are actually doing something for our
community that I can participate in. And its not too late to be part of yet
another event put on by the AAC; the annual Pinecrest Climb-in September 11-12.
For more information on this and other things going on go to the AAC website:
http://www.americanalpineclub.org/section/sierranevada or you can contact Karen
at zzkarenzz@... for the Pinecrest Climb-in specifically

Rock Ice & Mountain Club September Meeting:  Tom McMillan presents Tom Frost photography

Location: Round Table Pizza, 2065 Occidental Road, Santa Rosa
Time & Date: Tuesday, September 7, 7:30 PM (Social hours and free beer for members at 6:30)
Directions:  From Highway 101 at Santa Rosa go west on Highway 12 to Stony Point Road Exit. Go straight from the middle lane at the light onto Occidental Road. The Round Table Pizza is on the right just down the road.

Tom McMillan will show a movie of Tom Frost's vintage photography and a few slides of his own adventures to round out the evening.

A native of North Carolina, Tom (47 yrs) has enjoyed rock climbing and mountaineering in the US and abroad for over 30 years. He has experience in all types of climbing: high altitude mountaineering in the Great Ranges, general alpinism, technical rock climbing, big wall climbing, ice climbing, mixed climbing, and ski mountaineering.  With friends around the world, he has enjoyed such climbs as the Cassin Ridge of Denali (Alaska), the North Face of the Matterhorn (Switzerland), Bonatti Pillar (France), Central Pillar of Freney (Italy to France), peaks in the Cordillera Blanca (Peru), Mustagh Ata (China), the Canadian Rockies, and big walls in Yosemite (El Capitan in-a-day, Tempest, Tribal Rite, etc.).  Tom works as a Database Developer for AMB Property Corporation in San Francisco. He lives with his wife, Linda (also a climber) in San Rafael, California, just north of San Francisco.

Tom Frost's name conjures for us that spirit of the Golden Age of Yosemite rock climbing when adventure was in the air and the style of the ascent was what counted. In the early 1960s, Frost made ascents of the Nose, the Salathé Wall, and the North America Wall of El Cap with pioneers Royal Robbins, Chuck Pratt, and Yvon Chouinard.  Frost photographed many of his first ascents. Glen Denny wrote of Frost's photographic achievements: "Most of the climbing photos you see now are prearranged setups for the camera on much-traveled routes. The impressive thing about Frost is that his classic images were seen, and photographed, during major first ascents. In those awesome situations he led, cleaned, hauled, day after day and--somehow--used his camera with the acuity of a Cartier-Bresson strolling about a piazza. Extremes of heat and cold, storm and high altitude, fear and exhaustion . . . it didn't matter. He didn't seem to feel the pressure."

The Famous Facelift is happening. Clean up during the day and programs and party
at night in The Valley. The face lift starts the 21st. For the first time the
Facelift has two group sites and a coordinator at the Meadows. George Ridley
will facilitate that area. He will meet everyone at 8am at the Lambert dome
parking lot to hand out bags, schwag and help with destinations.

A camping site is hard to find so, show up early in the week and get to Camp
Four. However the Rock, Ice & Mountain Club happens to have a group site in
Tuolumne next weekend Sept. 24-26. Check with Celeste who is in charge of the
Toulumne group site for the RIM Club. Ken might have room in The Meadows too.

I'm planning to do the north side of Mt Shasta (Hotlum and/or Whitney glacier)
in the first half of October (2010). I may live San Francisco between noon and
4pm on Friday and have to be back on Wednesday morning. I was there a couple
weeks ago and conditions were good but icy. The plan is to set up the camp at
11,000 on Saturday, and do one route on Sunday and the second one on Monday. If
there is still time and energy, do the Avalanche Gulch on Tuesday. This is just
the initial plan, reality may be different. I would like to climb Shasta later
again before it starts snowing.

Drop me a line if you would like to join me.

Cheers

First Round First Minute
Since Chris Sharma moved to the sport climbing mecca of Catalunya, Spain, he's opened dozens of routes that are redefining high-end climbing. First Round First Minute gives an update on Sharma's latest 5.15 first ascents, and tells the story of his epic battle with his latest ongoing project.

The Hardest Moves
Daniel Woods and Paul Robinson compete to climb the hardest boulders ever scaled. An inside look at what it takes to push the difficulty envelope of this intense sport.

Origins: The Hulk
Peter Croft and Lisa Rands attempt a wild free ascent on the Incredible Hulk Wall in the Sierras -- arguably America's best (and least filmed) alpine rock wall. Croft, the most legendary of California's crack masters mentors the renowned boulderer Rands as she explores into alpine traditional climbing terrain.

Down and Out, and Under
A once-in-a-lifetime adventure expedition for first ascents in Australia and on the wild sea cliffs of outer Tasmania.

Fly or Die
Dean Potter continues his extreme vertical exploration, opening new freeBASE climbs, along with highline and wingsuit jumps in some of the most mind-blowing vertical footage ever captured.

The Swiss Machine
Ueli Steck may be the greatest speed alpinist the world has ever seen. In this film he tells the stories of his record-breaking ascents in the Alps, accompanied by stunning aerial footage of him racing up 8,000 foot alpine faces. Ueli joins Alex Honnold in Yosemite to attempt speed records there. His ultimate goal: take his one-man alpine speed game to the largest, highest walls in the world.

Yo all,

Next Monday should be an amazing slideshow with super climbing chica
Kate Rutherford! Be there!

WHEN: Monday October 11th, 7:30pm
WHERE: Clark Center AUDITORIUM (follow these directions, but go in the
basement instead of on the 3rd floor. The basement just looks like a
hole in the middle of the Clark Center)

Last month Kate Rutherford and Jasmin Caton climbed 1,500 meters in
the Tasermuit Fiord in Greenland, and one was miserable.... Come hear
funny climbing stories and see stellar photos from Kate's last few
trips from free climbing the Freerider to the Venezuelan jungle, and
Greenland.
