Hey,

Is anyone heading to J-tree from Bay Area in early/mid-April? Would anyone like to?!

I'd like to get started on the first part of my guiding certification!!! My class starts on Friday, April 9th.

I'm looking for a ride down to J-tree before April 9th, or if someone wants to go climbing in JTree for a few days leading up to April 9th, I'd be up for that as well.

Interested? Be in touch!

Cheers,
Faith

hi - does anybody have any recent info on the ice conditions in lee vining canyon (ie: from this past weekend march 27-28)?  looking to go out there this next weekend and would appreciate any info on what the ice is like.  i'd love to see a 2-ton slab of ice fall one day, but not from the belay ledge.

the big big storm now hitting us will definitely cool things down, and ice has been real good this year in the canyon.  but nothing beats recent info so welcome anything you might know first-hand.

cheers,

Was out at Lee Vining a couple of weeks ago.
Best ice I´ve seen in years.
All three main walls were in.
Not much in the lower canyon or across, below the road.
Access was pretty good even- no boulder hopping, though
the river was poking through in spots.

Hey Serge,
I was there last weekend (March 27-28).  Chouinard Falls was fine but the Bard-Harrington and Main Wall were not.  There is a horizontal crack on the Main Wall and we heard icefall from the Bard on Saturday 3/27.

thanks to some great beta on recent lee vining conditions from miquel, bill and scott, ended up going to the canyon this past weekend, and so i wanted to send out an update on ice conditions for anybody itching for "one last weekend" on ice.

pictures of each wall attached.  bard-harrington is pretty much out.  main wall still has some decent ice, but there it's definitely thinned out and there was clear evidence of some lateral cracks forming.  chouinard was looking good.  left side is melting out, but central section is still nice and fat and seems well-bonded.  the recent daytime warming followed by re-freezing has left parts of the ice surface ice very brittle (ie: lots of de-laminating), but the shaded pockets are still very plastic.  the belay ledge is nearly non-existent, so base access is not very easy or comfortable.

the canyon was freezing during the day all weekend (ie: blizzard conditions), and didn't see or hear any ice or rock fall while there.  forecast this week is sunny days and freezing nights, so my take is that chouinard still might have a week (or two?) of decent climbing left on it for anybody wanting a final go at ice this season.

and in case you're wondering "where are all the ice climbers?", well...there were none there apart from us.

Climbing in the Mont Blanc Range: French, Swiss and Italian Alps
by Isabelle Peyrichoux

This past summer, Isabelle set out to Chamonix (France) to take a
6-day mountaineering course and fulfill her longtime dream to climb
Mont Blanc, highest peak in the Alps (4,810 m - 15,781ft). During
these six days climbing several 3000m/4000m peaks, traveling on
glacier, ice, snow and rock, hanging in a crevasse, and traveling from
huts to huts across France, Switzerland and Italy, Isabelle fell in
love again with the amazing beauty of the Mont Blanc range. Through
inspiring pictures, Isabelle will share with you her journey going
back to her native country to climb in one of the most beautiful
mountain range in the world and the place where alpinism all began!

University of CA, Riverside Outdoor Excursions is taking signups for our rafting
trip on the Kern River May 15-16. Everyone is invited (you don't have to be a

trip, so we are advertising outside the UCR community. With what you get, the
cost is actually quite reasonable.

UCR student cost $299, Others $389. Includes transportation from Riverside,

Pass the word about this trip if you know anyone who would like to go rafting.
It's already pre-paid, so we need to fill it with 12 people.

Hey All,
I have an invitation to do the 50 Classic Climbs of NA that are in Wyoming in Late July.  So Tetons, Wind River, Devils Tower stuff.  I am 51- Male 6-1, 185, married and can carry more than my share of gear and can lead every pitch if that is what works for you.  Happy to swing leads too.

So if you are inclined, in very good condition, can get in climbing condition, have the time and are willling to do a few days climbing beforehand with me(so we can make sure we are a good pair) then drop me a note directly to my email.  Gender, age, size are not issues for me.  I can carry loads and walk faster than most and am willing to carry extra if my partner is smaller or more petite.  If you are just not in shape....then please do not reply.  Thanks for reading.

Sincerely
Robert

Does anyone have a high resolution digital photo of Half Dome (in RAW or tiff,
with 3500 x 2300 native pixels) that I could have? I would like to have Half
Dome (in the photo) laser-etched into black
granite tiles that will be used as the cooking backsplash in my remodeled
kitchen. I am thinking about a photo that's similar to (or one that's further.

Thanks,
Alfred (alfred.kwok@...)
