Bruce LaCroix just got back from an exceelnt adventure up Charlotte Dome's South Face (12 pitches 5.8).

The weather was fine, partly cloudy, a tiny bit of rain, no lightning.   The beautiful hike in over Kearsarge pass was extraordinary (6.5 hours in, 5.5 hours out).   We did the climb in a very average 8.5 hours, with a pair of 50m ropes, one set of nuts, cams aliens through 3" one set.   The aliens were not in the ST but we used them a lot.  We also used the nuts a lot.  Some pitches we only had a couple of nuts left.  ST said one or two sets of nuts and cams.  We simul climbed for five feet into the Alcove on the 11th pitch.  The rope was maxed out on several pitches.   At the end of the day I was glad we had saved the weight by carrying 50's.

The view over Bubbs creek, The Great Western Divide, et al was like living in a coffee table book.  Mosquitoes were a bit of an issue at 10000.  There is more snow in the backcountry than one would expect for a year this dry.  Prominent snowfields above 10000' on the north slopes.   It was a nice start for my summer Alpine season. Pictures next week as Bruce is cameraman for this climb.

2.5 hours to Dade Lake
40 mins to base of Climb
6 hours on the route.
1.5 hours back to Dade Lake,
2.3 hours out to car.
We used one set of nuts, and one set of Aliens through 3".  Lots of webbings in variious sizes as there were plenty of spots to sling natural projections which made setting up most of the belays very fast as well as allowing for quick protection of the numerous long, low angle sections of the Arete.  And ohhhh yes, if you think Chimneying and off width is a lot of work in the Valley or Toulumne, you will have a chance to give it a try at 13000 feet in the crux.  I thought I was going to pass out.
Lots of Snow to the base of the climb, but none on the route.   Instep crampons to the base, from Dade Lake, would be a good idea.  The descent down Peppermint Pass is treacherous, unless very soft(read Late afternoon)  even then an ice axe would be advisable.  Sprcial thanks to Dirk Summers for the snow warnings.  In general there is still a lot more snow in the backcountry than one would expect for a 66% of normal year.  I think the unseasonably cool weather in June and now July is keeping the snow and mosquitoes abundant.

It was sunny and not too windy.  Even so, I climbed in an icebreaker 200, light fleece shirt and my winter weight Moutain Hardware rain parka.  The guidebook admonitions about it being a cold route are true.  Carry an extra layer.  The mosquitoes were unbelievable between, Gem Lake and Mosquito Flat (10,200 to 11,200).  They would attack in a light wind, sunshine and while walking at 3 miles an hour.   After the sun dropped behind the ridge they were potentially lethal!   The mosquitoes at Dade Lake were not too numerous as it is still half frozen.  Even so, they could fly upwind to attack.  The Bug Bucket was a sanity saver.  We saw one other party start up from Dade Lake, when we were at the top of the first pitch.  We never crossed paths though.   I hope they got down before the snow in the Pass started to harden.

Next stop will be Fishhook Arete on Russell in two weeks

I have been thinking a lot about doing the JMT at the end of the summer. While
I'm sure I can count on seeing thru-hikers, I would also like to consider
teaming up with someone for reliable company, safety measures, etc. So I'm
wondering if there is any interest out there to do the trail later this summer,
and possibly bag a few more of the peaks along the way... I'm thinking north to
south, but could be convinced otherwise! If you, or someone you know, may be
interested, let's talk!

Cheers,
Faith

If anyone is seriously interested in owning a home in Yosemite, give me a call.
Please be sure you know that you can purchase it, - banks are being very fussy
on financing right now. I will very open with the buyer on the income generated
from the property. unlikely it would be cash flow positive, but could be if
managed "aggressively."

I just moved back to SoCal after a 5-year hiatus and am looking for competent

feet, and a brisk pace. Though I could be talked into uncoiling a rope, I am
currently more interested in unroped ascents. Saturdays and Sundays are best.

On Saturday, August 29 I am thinking about hiking (thrashing and clawing) up the
complete south ridge of Mt. Baldy (in SoCal) and descending Register Ridge. The
loop will be mostly off trail and will involve about 4000 vertical feet. I would
like to start hiking at around 6AM from Manker Flats and plan to be down by
noon. Let me know if you are interested in coming along. I keep a brisk pace and
take few breaks.

In going through my storage I found I still have my Plastic Degre Boots. These
are in great shape (a few light scratches in the shell, soles are great). Plus
they were upgraded to custom foam liners (warm them up in the oven then they
will mold to you). However they do not have insoles (I used superfeet which I
share between boots. With the custom foam liners I have found these boots to be
lighter or as light as most 3 season backpacking boots. The liner says size 11
(they come in even sizes) but I normally wear a 10 - 10 1/2.

They are located in the Richmond area (please no shipping). $40
