on the off-chance that someone may actually have this, does anybody have any topo and/or climbing guides or recommendations for climbing in iceland?  specifically heard an area called hnappavellir, about 4 hours from reykjavík, is a good sport climbing spot.  anyways anything in english would help, as my icelandic is, well, non-existant.

Ed Hartouni: Climbing OFF the Beaten Path in Yosemite

Yosemite Valley remains a spectacular destination for climbing; it continues to
be the crucible in which climbers harden their skills. Thousands of climbs have
been done spanning a century, yet this only scratches the surface of what is
possible. Of those thousands of climbs, a small number are done regularly. This
is a story of visiting some of those less done and forgotten climbs and using
the inspiration derived from them to create a generation of new climbs.

Ed Hartouni has spent his professional career as a physicist living half his
life on the west coast and the other half on the east coast. He learned to
climb from the Rock Climbing Section of the Riverside Chapter of the Sierra Club
in 1968, using the tools of the day, pitons, goldline and Robbins boots. First
climb: White Maiden's Walkway at Taquitz Rock. His first trip to Yosemite
Valley was in August of 1971. After moving to New York City in 1976, Ed began
twenty years of climbing in the Shawangunks, Canon Cliff, Cathedral and
Whitehorse Ledges in New Hampshire and ice climbing in the Northeast, including
an ascent of The Black Dike on Cannon Mountain. He also made numerous trips to
the west during this time to the Bugaboos, Canadian Rockies, Wind River Range,
and the Tetons, including a walk up Popocateptl in Mexico. Moving back to the
Bay Area in 1995 started a second love affair for Yosemite Valley where he has
been climbing as many weekends as possible. This includes exploring the less
done places, as well as assisting in putting up 14 new routes. He has also
climbed in many other places during this time, including Joshua Tree, Red Rocks,
Vedauwoo, and Squamish, and has hopes of many more places to come.

From an Icelandic friend:

Here are some pointers to information that may help:

Icelandic Alpine Club: http://www.isalp.is/english.php (this is their English page, which probably has less information than the Icelandic one)

An Icelandic mountaineering guide: http://www.outdoors.is/mountaineering

Information about Hnappavellir: http://www.outdoors.is/rock-climbing-areas

I haven't been to Hnappavellir myself but the general area includes Europe's largest glacier and Iceland's highest mountain, so well worth visiting independent of rock climbing.

As for climbing guides, I would email someone at the Icelandic Alpine Club to ask.  The following page has descriptions of new routes, but they're in Icelandic: http://www.isalp.is/route.php?op=l&t=2 .

Have fun!

Hello again CMG -

I posted a couple of weeks back about a proposed Whitney Trip. Last week I
called the rangers to postpone, the weather sounded grim.

We've rescheduled with a new entry date: next Tuesday, June 16. We have one open
space on our 4-person, 4-day permit. Entry/exit is via the Main Trail - not the
North Fork. Our plan was to camp at Trail Camp, hit Muir East Buttress, swing
over to Whitney East Buttress, or such. Recent snow may change that.

Drop a line if you might be interested in our remaining spot. It would be nice
to find another leader if we were to travel as group(s) - we've already got two
followers, myself included. If you're self-contained, do what you want. If the
powder remains, the climbing may be more alpine than rock, no need for rope.

Thanks and here's to summer,

-Joe

I rarely post here, but wanted to share the following information I got via
email from the California State Parks foundation today:

"Update June 15th, 2009

This afternoon, the Budget Conference Committee weighed in on the Governor's
proposal to close state parks. On a divided vote, the committee voted to agree
to eliminate General Fund support for state parks, but also to implement the
State Park Access Pass. The State Park Access Pass would institute a $15
surcharge on vehicle license fees of non-commercial vehicles, in order to
provide Californians with free day-use access to state parks and generate
much-needed revenues for the system. "

More information and a petition to support this plan here:
http://ga3.org/campaign/budget_spap09

I have enjoyed many hours climbing and bouldering in state parks that are on the
list of proposed closures (whatever that may mean) if a funding solution is not
found; these include Sonoma Coast, Mt. Diablo, Mt. Tamalpais, Robert Louis
Stevenson, Castle Rock, Donner, D.L. Bliss. I signed the petition. Hope you will
consider doing the same.

Had an excellent 4 day trip to Whitney area with Zachary Oliff and Joe Hornoff.  It was Snowing Tuesday Morning so we wandered down to Alabama Hills to practice building anchors and sport climb.   Joe did his first sport leads.  As the fresh snow ruled out the East Buttress Routes we had planned, we left Ropes and racks behind and Weds we headed up to Outpost camp, below fresh snow line. Thursday we walked up Whitney and climbed the Class 3 slope up Muir from the trail.   Well, it was a stout Class 3 with 8 inches of fresh snow.  The ice axe was used to probe for cracks, mixed climb holds, to clear snow and ice from footholds...The short climb took awhile.

Joe and Zachary were excellent Mountain travellers.  Good condition, judgement, and fun.  I look forward to the next trip.

There was surprising amount of snow left in the backcountry.  Besides the fresh snow, the unusually cool weather the last few weeks has helped to preserve the 66% of normal drought deposits from winter.

Next trip for me is Charlotte Dome on July 30.  With this trip under my belt my backcountry condition is much improved.

Sent from my iPhone so seemingly inexplicable spelling and syntax errors are probable.

Hi folks -

I have a campsite booked for Tuolumne Meadows for 4 nights next weekend - Thur
July 2 through Sun July 5. I'd be happy to share with a climbing partner or
two.

Most of my trips are solo, so I'm usually relegated to Class 4 and lower; I'm
getting more experience with Class 5. I've recently acquired a decent
introductory rack and am learning how to use it. Someone with a little more
experience (and a wee bit of patience) would probably be ideal.

I'm planning to drive a rental car up from Oakland, willing to share a ride. If
interested, let me know at hornof at gmail dot com.

Also should chime in that I had a wonderful time with Robert Smith and Zachary
Oliff up on Whitney last week.

Some of Zac's photo's are here:

and some of mine:
http://www.qitnl.com/061609/

While many of you have been graced by Robert's presence, I think this was the
first trip Zachary pulled off the CMG board. I'd give him two thumbs up and a
hearty recommendation as a climbing partner if he we're to join any of your
trips down the line.

Thanks,

-Joe

Posted by: "Sabine" schirm@...

Hi everybody,

I am the coordinator for the next CCC trip. We have a group site on the
Tuolumne campground for the July 4 weekend starting Thursday night, July
2 and departure Sunday July 5. Please let me know, if you plan to come.

I already received a request by a newcomer to team up as a third and for
a ride back to SF (or some BART/Caltrain station). :)

Cheers. Sabine

    DONNER SUMMIT CLIMB-MUNITY
    Dear Tom,

I hope you'll join us for our Donner Summit Climb-munity coming up in two weeks on July 11 and 12.  Details appear below.  We've also firmed up the date for our Tuolumne/Tioga gathering for August 15-16.  The rest of our events schedule, including a presentation by acclaimed British alpinist and author Stephen Venables, is also shown below.  As always, we encourage you to get involved in your Section by attending events and volunteering.  I welcome and encourage your input and feedback.  Email anytime.

    DONNER SUMMIT CLIMB-MUNITY, July 11-12

Join us for free camping, Saturday evening barbeque with beer, wine and campfire on the beautiful undeveloped property of SNS member Bela Vadasz of Alpine Skills International. It's right on top of Donner Pass, within easy walking distance of the superb granite crags. $10 for climbers under 29 years old, $15 for AAC members, $20 for non-members.  Everyone is welcome, so invite your friends! An RSVP is appreciated (email Dave Riggs). Here are the details:

    Donner Climb-munity     Donner Campfire

LOCATION: We will camp off Lake Mary Road just Southwest of and adjacent to the old ASI lodge (now Sugar Bowl Academy). It's right on top of Donner Pass on the South side of Old Highway 40. So if you're coming up the pass from the West, turn right immediately before the Sugar Bowl Academy parking lot, and if you're coming up from the East, turn left immediately after that parking lot. Parking will be along Lake Mary Road. Don't park in the Academy's lot. We'll have some small signs up. If you need more detailed directions just email or call (contact info below). Tent/bivi sites are scattered about a 25 to 50m walk from the road.

GROUP GEAR / FACILITIES: SNS will provide: a Wag Bag toilet system with privacy tent at the site, some community water containers, a large folding table for the food, a group shelter if needed (perhaps for wind). Bring your own:  tent, chair, other camping gear, breakfast and lunch food, some water, climbing gear, and good cheer.

SCHEDULE: Friday July 10 through Sunday July 12. Arrive Friday evening (or whenever), climb Saturday and Sunday. Feel free to join us for the whole deal or just one day or just the party or whatever you can do. We'll be at the site from about 7 PM on Friday (maybe earlier). We don't climb as a big organized group; rather you can partner up if needed and head off on your own. I'm sure anyone needing a partner or beta on where/what to climb will find it from our group. We can walk to most of the climbs, and there are fantastic routes for all abilities. Saturday evening drinks and barbeque will start around 7.

PARTY: Again, Saturday evening around 7. SNS will provide a grill, campfire supplies, and beer and wine and munchies. Bring your own grillables for the barbeque or other main course for Saturday evening dinner.

RELEASE: Please note: CLIMBING IS ON YOUR OWN AND NOT ORGANIZED, LEAD OR GUIDED BY THE AAC OR THE EVENT ORGANIZERS. You are required to sign a liability release form provided by the AAC in order to climb and camp with us. RSVP and we can get the release to you ahead of time instead of bothering you with it at the event. Please review, sign and bring it with you. Note that your signature must be witnessed (but not notarized). We'll also have some blank copies.

COST: $10 for climbers under 29 years old (AAC member or not), $15 for AAC members, $20 for non-members. I can't really prorate it if you're just coming for one day, but let's talk if that's an issue, because we want as many folks to attend whatever parts they can. Cash is preferred, but we'll also take a check made payable to the American Alpine Club.

     Stephen Venables, October 28-29, Reno

Acclaimed British alpinist and author Stephen Venables will give a presentation  on October 28 or 29 at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.  Well let you know when the date is finalized. Among his many climbing achievements, Venables made the first ascent (sans supplemental O2) of Mt. Everest's Neverest Buttress on the Kangschung Face in 1988 along with Ed Webster, Robert Anderson and Tahoe's own Paul Teare (look for an account in Part II of Ed Webster's Everest profile coming in Alpinist 27).  Venables is an equally impressive author, having won numerous awards for his eleven books, including Painted Mountains, Higher than the Eagle Soars, and his most recent, First Ascent, a history of mountaineering.  And of course, let's not forget the inspirational dream book Himalayan Alpine Style, with Andy Fanshawe.  You won't want to miss this show.  Thanks to Eliza Moran for organizing this.

Hi Steve, I’ planning to join a small group of friends on their last leg of the JMT, going south. The trip ends on Friday 8/7/09.

1st choice is to drive down on Sunday 8/2/09 & head out from Oak Creek trail, hopefully by 3:00 P.M.  Towards Baxter pass. This location is just few mills north of Independence & Onion Valley Rd. Starting elevation point is 6000’ going along the Creek for about two-three hours max & camp for the night @ about 8500’. The next days 8/3/09 we’ll cross over Baxter pass 12200’ & go down to Rae lakes & meet with group. Food drop for the group is arranged @ Charlotte Lake the next day 8/4/09, so all we have to carry is two day food supply. After Rae lakes we are going with the group itinerary until the end of the trip @ Whitney portal. . A shuttle bus is already arranged from Whitney portal.

2nd choice is a shorter one to drive in on Sunday 8/2/09 to Onion Valley & camp there for the night 9300’. The next 8/3/09 to head out @ Charlotte Lake & meet the group the next day @ charlotte lake & hike with the group to center basin, either @ Vidette Meadow for launch, or @ Center basin Trail Junction & the end of the day.

3ed option is to leave town on Monday 8/3/ 09 to Onion Valley & camp there for the night 9300’. The next day to hike out & meet the group @ vidette meadow & continue in the afternoon to Center Basin night camp.

Well, here are the options. Please see if there is any interest in joining me on this Little adventure. Best regards, Yehuda
