Here is the solution:
While signed in to Yahoo, go to http://calendar.yahoo.com This will
pull up your personal calendar.
On upper right side of page, click on Options.
In the Events column, click Time Guides.
Scroll down to the list of your groups.
Remove the checkmarks by clicking on them beside the groups you don't
want to appear on your personal calendar.
Scroll down to bottom of page and click Save.

I'll try to join part of the conference call tomorrow, but I'll be in
Truckee with my family over MLK weekend and I'd like to make one or
more day trips. Let me know if any of these sound particularly
interesting.

- Mt Rose summit. The snow at the top doesn't last long, so this is
more about reaching the summit than skiing.
- Peaks near Mt Rose: Tamarack, Relay, Galena chutes, etc.
- Tour from Brockway Summit to Martis Peak and over to the Placer
county highpoint on Mt Baldy. ~10 mi round trip, but it looks like
intermediate terrain.
- Castle Peak. 3rd class on top or skiing the north side.
- Mt Lola (I'm not sure what a winter visit entails)

Snowboards are fine (there are some flat areas at Mt Rose though) and
snowshoes might work for some of these.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your help this last weekend with hauling gear, cooking, being safe, and wonderful camaraderie!

Here is a link to the few pictures I took:

On Sunday, Bill, Brendan, and I hiked out via Emigrant Canyon and Donner Lake.  This way out took about three and half hours.  I'm attaching the route for future consideration as a way out or into the Lodge.  Deep snow might double the stated time.

Sincerely, Tom Cronin

Snowshoe Trails of Tahoe  might be a good place to start.  Click the link for the Amazon Look-Inside.

I have copy I can lend you if you're local; I'm in downtown Oakland (yeah, there's a riot going on).

And if you need a partner...I'm game.  Just got back from a weekend up on Yosemite Point.  We sure could use some more of the white stuff, it's real Sierra Cement up there now.

Best luck

Serge, Hi,

Think about Mt Tallach (9,735').  I think it is the only "real winter mountain" readily available to us, once the High Sierra passes are closed.

1.  from Mt Tallach Trailhead; taking the (horrible) summer route near to Fallen Leaf Lake; and past Floating Island Lake.  It is a great day in winter; you are above the prickly willows and the rotten talus; and no mozzies.  Views get more and more brill as you rise.  It is a long day, tho, and an early start is advisable.  4.1 miles to summit although it feels like three times the distance!

2.  from Spring Creek Trailhead, (6,520') up the steep "Sweat Hill" and into the NE Bowl; thence up the NE ridge.  Again, great views.  2.2 miles to summit, although again it feels nothing like that short.  Note the interesting Eastern Chutes - skiing for crazies and snow axing for us.  Some challenging winter mountaineering stuff for those inclined.

Websearch Mt Tallach for detail writeups (route and experiences) and many photos.

We are currently looking for girls grades 5 - 12 for its Oakland and
Belmont programs. Girls do not need to have any climbing experience,
only a willingness to learn and an interest in discovering their
strengths. In addition, because the program aims to bring girls of
different economic backgrounds and experiences together, two-thirds of
the spots are reserved for participants receiving full and partial aid.

Girlz Climb On! provides an excellent student-to-mentor ratio (1:1),
small group sizes (ten maximum per session) and meetings once a week
for ten consecutive weeks at an indoor gym. The full program
culminates in a full day of outdoor climbing at Castle Rock State
Park. Please pass on this message to someone who might be able to
benefit from the program. For more on GirlVentures and "Girlz Climb
On!", see below. On behalf of GirlVentures, thank you!

The mission of GirlVentures is to empower adolescent girls to develop
and express their strengths. At GirlVentures, we explore self,
community, culture and environment through outdoor adventure, creative
arts and group experiences. Core to our success and unique to
GirlVentures is our commitment to bringing together girls from diverse
ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. The rich diversity
of the participants on our courses provides a rare opportunity for
adolescent girls to embrace what makes each of them unique and to
learn about and appreciate the differences in others.

Girlz Climb On
Have you ever been rock climbing? Inside or outside? Do you want to
learn how to climb or do you want to improve your climbing skills?
Here's your chance! During this course, you will be paired with an
adult female mentor once a week for ten weeks at an indoor climbing
gym. Each session will focus on developing your technical climbing
skills like tying a figure-8 knot, gym rules and safety, belaying,
climbing techniques, smearing and edging. If you don't know what these
terms are, don't worry! You'll soon learn. Each session will also
focus on issues that connect rock climbing with a strength you may
already have or would like to improve on like building relationships
with friends, trust, leadership, self-expression, working as a group,
communication and resolving conflicts.

We begin with a one-day ropes course experience and the course will
also include one weekend outing to a local state park so you'll have a
chance to climb both inside & outside! To sign up, go to:
http://www.girlventures.org/programs/apply.shtml. Should you need
additional information, feel free to contact me (415.515.1433) or
Sarah Heath, Program Manager, at 415.864.0780 x. 303.

I had signed-up for a 3-day ice-climbing trip to Nordegg with U of Calgary for the weekend of March 5-7.  But it seems so far I¢m the only one signed up! So they may cancel it  :-(

I¢m thinking maybe just bail the course and just do this on my own that same weekend.  Anybody interested?

Unfortunately that's my only weekend available for ice climbing, and since I've heard ice in Sierras isn't great this year, it'll probably be crap by March.  So maybe Canada is the place to go (actually, it's the place to go anyways, but maybe there's even more motivation now :-).   I have everything needed for ice climbing except ice-crews and the ability to lead on ice.  The former can be bought, the latter, well, hmmm...  But I do know at least one place in the rockies that should have a good wall of water ice 20m high or so where you can hike up to set-up TR¢s (see pic attached from last year), and there's time to research more spots too.  Otherwise I also have an extra pair of crampons, and if we¢re two only need one set of ice-tools at a time.

Anyways, ping me if you're interested.

I am equally proud and humbled, excited and reticent, but happy and happy, to announce the release of my new book Foundations for Awareness, Signcutting and Tracking.  This is a project that has spanned years from inspiration to completion.  I can see a light at the end of the tunnel and it is not an oncoming train.  The book should be coming through around February 23rd.  That is the date I expect to be able to start filling orders for the book.

Long and short of it, more information is on my website www.trackingschool.com

coverfront.jpgBut here's a little summary:

Are you interested in tracking skills?  If you have spent any time outside, you have come across tracks or sign left by animals and people.  If you have ever wondered how to interpret, and even follow, human tracks or sign, this book is for you.  This book imparts knowledge necessary to answer the questions "What happened here?" and "Who made that track?".  This is an essential book for encouraging and developing your awareness of the outdoors.  It is a great aid for property owners, hunters, naturalists, search and rescue (SAR) teams, SAR managers, military instructors and law enforcement agencies.  This perfect bound, softcover, full size (8 ½ x 11), 260 page book contains 110+ illustrations (some color), a glossary, index and bibliography.  It was written to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management Search and Rescue entry level tracking course standards.  Through explanations, illustrations and many pictures from actual searches for missing persons, this book describes methods and techniques used by tracking personnel to do the following:

ü  Become familiar with the terminology of tracking

ü  Dispel misconceptions about tracking

ü  Select and use tools of the tracking trade

ü  Record and document tracking information

ü  Manage light and shadow to your advantage

ü  Learn about improving your awareness

ü  Find, follow and interpret tracks and sign

ü  Receive information about footwear as it relates to tracking

ü  Learn how to age sign

ü  Understand what to look for as sign of passage on various ground covers

ü  Get an introduction to animal tracking

Search and rescue (SAR) tracking practitioner and instructor Rob Speiden has drawn from decades of experience including the Field Team Signcutter course developed by Greg Fuller to create this invaluable resource.  Rob has been an active member of the SAR community since 1993.  Rob has trained with many tracking experts around the country and participated in over 100 missing person search missions.  As the Virginia Department of Emergency Management Field Team Signcutter (FTS) course coordinator, and through his Natural Awareness Tracking School, he currently instructs SAR volunteers and law enforcement officers in tracking and awareness skills that enhance search efforts for missing persons.  Rob has written a textbook for the FTS course and is interested in sharing it with you.  For more information and how to order the book please visit his website at www.trackingschool.com.

No, March and April are fine for Joshua Tree. May is getting iffy,
especially the end of May.

My "rules of thumb" for Joshua Tree are this:

November to the first week of December are fine
Second week of December to end of February are hit or miss wrt to
weather. It has gone every which way imaginable over the years.
March to end of April are fine.
May is the start of the "getting hot" phase.

Have fun!

Ice climbing in the cold stream canyon was really great this last
weekend. Code Red, Code Blue and Walk on the Wild side are in and
pretty fat. Overnight temps have been consistently below freezing
(despite warm days) and the water is flowing so it should be good for
a while.

A few friends just came back from Ouray and said this ice is very
good there too, if picked over from the large number of climbers.

Hi Susan,

I was in Ouray January 21-25 and it kinda sucked. We were rained out
one day, although that didn't slow down some others. It was unfun
climbing in the rain. Anyway, that is not typical and the last day,
Sunday, was fabulous. For those who haven't been there it is a great
ice climbing destination. The gorge can get a little tiresome but there
is lots of ice in the surrounding area, usually.

There is also a small grocery store in Lee Vining.
The reservation number is WLVL2135. If you get there first, and want to check in, please do so.
