Technology Standards - request for your input   Message List

Dear colleagues,

Standards are important in education. Standards allow for each student to be
measured against his/her progress towards a concrete set of achievements and NOT
against other students' achievements. Curriculum, assessment, and professional
development can all be aligned to standards.

TESOL has developed standards for K-12 Students and Standards for Adult
Education. The latest development in TESOL's work in Standards is a published
framework document for Technology Standards which includes Technology Standards
for Teachers and Technology Standards for Students.

The Technology Standards Task Force is now putting together the full volume and
is looking for vignettes (short classroom excerpts) which can illustrate each of
the standards.

You can see the bare-bones Standards at http://www.tesol.org/techstandards and
buy a copy of the Standards online from TESOL at the same site (the Task Force
doesn't get any royalties).

If you go to the Discussion Area, also linked from that page, you can see a
sample Teacher Standard and a sample Student Standard, complete with performance
objectives and a
sample vignette for each. TESOL does not allow us to post more than that,
unfortunately.
Nevertheless, if you are interested in writing a vignette for TESOL, we can send
you the text on the particular Standard you are interested in.

We have a number of vignettes already but we are looking for more. If you are
interested in writing a vignette for inclusion in the full volume or online
(with full credit, of course!), please get in touch with us.

In the meantime you can take a look at the online samples and see the kind of
vignettes we are talking about. We are interested in vignettes from people in as
wide a range of settings as possible: EFL, ESL, ESP, fully online, face-to-face,
hybrid teaching, children, teens, adults, etc. It is important to show examples
from people working in different countries and with different technological
infrastructure.

For those of you working in MATESOL programs, writing vignettes would be a
wonderful project to give your students, especially ones with previous or
current teaching experience.

Do get in touch to share your example with the rest of the TESOL world.

With many thanks
