Dear CIRPCA Community,

I realize that you all probably get a lot of these on here, but I thought I would give it a shot. After all, any little bit helps...

My name is Andrew Cartwright, and I'm a native Hoosier--I graduated in 2001 Decatur Central HS on Indy's southwest side and have since earned degrees from both Wabash College in Crawfordsville and IU-Bloomington. I'm currently serving as a TEFL volunteer in Ukraine and I have about 7 months before I come back home. Not much time, but still enough to do something worthwhile.

Which brings me to my next point. for the most part, my role here is teaching English, both language and literature, to university students, and this has been a great experience. But, the most rewarding time in my service was one week last summer when I worked as a counselor at a summer camp for Ukrainian youth who are infected and affected by HIV, called Camp OHALOW (Overcoming HIV And Leading Our World). Last year was Camp OHALOW's first year of existence; over 30 kids showed up to a small woodsy camp site in eastern Ukraine, and we all had just about the best week of our lives. No kidding! 

Ukraine has currently has the highest infection rate in all of Europe, and as such it affects a lot of children, many of whom not only have to deal with the disease itself but also the stigma and discrimination that come along with it. I can give more background about the defined goals of the camp--things like "increasing personal knowledge about HIV/AIDS" and "fostering social development" (if you are interested, email me!). But, at it's foundation, Camp OHALOW is a place where these kids who don't often get to be real kids can have a place to play and run and laugh with other kids like them. These kids are amazing! They have been through so much--some of them are orphans who have lost their parents to the disease, some have spent long spans of their young lives in and out of hospitals--but they aren't defined by these trials. They are not just kids with a disease; they are soccer players, actors, singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, artists, dreamers.

OHALOW 2012 is scheduled to run from July 4-14; we have about one more month to go before we have to close our Partnership grant. OHALOW is free for campers (many wouldn't be able to go otherwise) and it also includes sessions with both a doctor and a psychologist--the Partnership grant needs to cover all of this and more. I have already hit up my friends and my immediate and extended family for donations and so far the other volunteers and I have raised over $1700 toward our goal of $7400 (the community contribution is over $3700). But, that leaves us over $5000 short, and I thought it would be a good idea to enlist the help of my extended extended hometown family. The Peace Corps Office of Communications and Office of Global Health and HIV announce the official Peace Corps AIDS-Free Generation Photo Contest! Winners will have their photos showcased at the 2012 International AIDS Conference, held in the United States for the first time in 22 years, where 25,000 people will gather.
 
Participants are encouraged to share photos from their Peace Corps experience that highlight the important contributions the Peace Corps makes in working toward an AIDS-free generation.  Please submit photos by Sunday, July 1.

I am writing to introduce the Indiana Council on World Affairs (ICWA). Founded in 1955, the purpose of the ICWA has been to foster public understanding of world conditions and U.S foreign policy through forums, conferences, and publications. Our group is a non-political, non-partisan organization.  Now more than ever there is a need to educate, inspire and engage Indiana citizens in international affairs and the critical world issues of our times.  It is possible that we have some interests in common.  In recent years we have hosted national and international experts who have discussed topics as diverse as the global food supply, universal human rights, Middle East realignment, US-Mexican relations, and promoting democracy.

Hi everyone!

We are having a family and friends pitch-in Halloweenie Roast on October 27, 2012, Saturday, 12:00 noon until 4ish at Eagle Creek Park, Mt. Pleasant North Shelter!

There is a playground at the shelter. There is a Go-Ape zip-line and tree-top adventure course (We will have a group discount –more on that to follow).   There are hiking trails and nature centers. This is a family and friends affairs, so feel free to bring both. Some games will be provided, such as bocce ball, but please feel free to bring along any fun outdoor games you enjoy!

This is a pitch-in. We will need hotdogs, buns, soft drinks, paper or plastic cutlery, plates and cups, graham crackers, marshmallows, Hershey bars (for S’Mores)  or your favorite dish from your host country.  Please RSVP by Oct. 25th to Stephanie at schuck_stephanie@... or rsvp on our facebook page, and please indicate what you will bring in your RSVP.

Directions:
Eagle Creek Park is located at 7840 W.  56th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, on 56th Street just west of the west leg of Interstate 465.  If entering the park from the 56th Street gate, once in the park take the very first right turn (at the parking lot) then the very next left to the Mt. Pleasant Shelter.
If 71st Street is more convenient, take 71st Street   west.  Just west of Interstate 65, 71st Street turns south to become the Park’s north side entrance. Once in the Park take the Park road south until just before the 56th Street Park gate.  Turn left at the parking lot on your left, and then the next left to the Mt. Pleasant Shelter.

A couple of other things. The park gate entry fee is $5.00 per car.  And if you still need directions once in the Park, feel free to call Michael White, (317) 828-4824.

malls, an Indy park that is free entrance, nearby home, other?  Some internet
searching gave these possibilities, though I am not familiar by experience:
Northwest way (4 mi)- Pike Soccer Fields (within 0.5 mi) - Cross Creek Shopping
Center (3 mi)............

The Arizona Teaching Fellows program provides an accelerated pathway into teaching for talented career changers and accomplished recent college graduates. We are looking for individuals from diverse backgrounds who want to put their knowledge and experience to work on behalf of high-need students throughout Arizona, specifically in the urban districts of Phoenix, Arizona - the tribal communities of Page, Holbrook, and Sanders Arizona - and the southwest border schools of Yuma, Arizona.

Election Day has come and gone.  While many great champions will be leaving Capitol Hill, one new RPCV lawmaker has been elected.
 
The clock is ticking to pass Peace Corps Commemorative legislation. 
 
Also, we want to secure at least 100 RPCV groups on a joint letter to President Obama about Peace Corps funding and the next agency director.
 
It's time for your November monthly update.
White HouseNPCA Preparing Group Letter to President Obama 

With the re-election of President Obama, the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) has prepared an important sign-on letter for RPCV member groups.  The sign-on letter references two important issues.
  • Providing strong funding for Peace Corps in the President's Fiscal Year 2014 budget request.
  • Outlining key criteria in nominating the next Peace Corps Director. 
If you are connected to an RPCV member group, please review this letter and bring it to the attention of your group leaders.  We are collecting signatures from member groups until December 3rd.

Our goal is to secure at least 100 group signatures in the next few weeks.  Contact us at advocacy@... for details on how to sign on.


Joe Kennedy Kennedy Election Increases RPCVs in House  

Come January, the number of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers in the House of Representatives will increase to five.  That increase comes with the election of Joseph Kennedy III (Dominican Republic 04-06).

The other four House RPCVs won re-election, most by very comfortable margins.
 

Capitol at night Thank Outgoing Lawmakers Who Supported Peace Corps 

 Several lawmakers who lost their re-election bids were strong and regular supporters of legislation and other initiatives to support and strengthen the Peace Corps.  Among the major Peace Corps champions who won't be returning in January are Representatives Howard Berman (D-CA), Pete Stark (D-CA), Leonard Boswell (D-IA), Ben Chandler (D-KY) and Betty Sutton (D-OH).  

Other lawmakers who provided some key support for the Peace Corps but were defeated also should be thanked.  They include Representatives Laura Richardson (D-CA), David Rivera (R-FL) and Nan Hayworth (R-NY). 


Additionally, nearly three dozen Representatives and Senators who had previously lost primary races or announced their retirement have been big champions for the Peace Corps.

With approximately 70 new members joining the Senate and House in January, our upcoming advocacy will certainly include introducing these members to the Peace Corps community.

Peace Corps Commemorative

  
If you want to see an outside space near the National Mall to mark the historic significance of the founding of the Peace Corps more than fifty years ago, the time to act is now!

We have made tremendous progress in the last two years to pass House Bill 854 and Senate Bill 1421, a key step that is necessary to build a modest, privately funded Peace Corps Commemorative near the National Mall.

Unfortunately, time is running out.  Congress returns to work next week to work on a number of major issues.  There's a chance the commemorative legislation will be able to pass in this period.  However, all the progress we've achieved will dial back to zero in 2013.

Take Action Now:
  • First and most important: If your member(s) of Congress are on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, or the House Natural Resources Committee, please contact them now and urge them to pass Peace Corps Commemorative legislation before the end of this year.
  • If your lawmakers are among the 22 Senators and 159 Congressmen/women who have co-sponsored this legislation, please ask that they use their leadership to ensure that the Peace Corps Commemorative legislation passes.
  • If you are represented by members of the Senate or House who have not yet co-sponsored Peace Corps Commemorative legislation, please contact them and ask them to co-sponsor the legislation and help lead efforts to make sure these bills are passed this year.

Malaysia RPCV Paul Murphy is becoming a mainstay of our Capitol Hill Advocacy efforts.  

He's also a mainstay in being a regular contributor to support National Peace Corps programs. That includes Paul's general membership to the NPCA in October, a small portion of which supports our advocacy activities.

Paul is among more than 130 recipients of our monthly advocacy news to donate to the NPCA, either with a membership donation, general support donation, or a special gift to advocacy.

Four RPCVs Mark Your Calendars

National Day of Action: February 28, 2013 


February 28th:  The new 113th Congress will only be a few weeks old.  No doubt some of the new members will still be unpacking their boxes and learning how to navigate the underground tunnels on Capitol Hill.

February 28th:  That day will mark the National Peace Corps Association's next major activity on Capitol Hill and around the country.  That's the day when we will hold our 9th Annual National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps.

It's a day when we ask everyone to set aside five minutes to contact their lawmakers about the Peace Corps.  And, in recent years, we've had a great group of advocates who come to Washington to back up the nationwide mobilization by holding dozens of face-to-face meetings and visiting virtually every congressional office to demonstrate there is a strong constituency for a strong and vibrant Peace Corps.

OMB 115 RPCV Member Groups Sign Letter to President Obama 

A National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) delegation led by former Ohio Congressman Tony Hall (Thailand 66-67),  NPCA Board Chair Tony Barclay (Kenya 68-70) and Acting President Anne Baker (Fiji 84-87) met on December 6th with officials of the federal Office of Management and Budget to discuss the President's next Peace Corps budget request to Congress.

One of the items the group presented at the meeting was a December 5th letter to the President signed by RPCV member groups from all across the country.

Thanks to your efforts, we surpassed our goal of at least 100 group signatures on the letter to the President!

Capitol Peace Corps Commemorative:  

Down to the Wire 


The so-called "Fiscal Cliff" isn't the only item with its fate hanging in the balance at the close of the 112th Congress.  

Negotiations on a package of public lands bills is also under consideration and that could include the non-controversial Peace Corps Commemorative legislation. (House Bill 854 and Senate Bill 1421).

  • Your Voice - Why Does Peace Corps Matter?  As we gear up for the new 113th Congress, we want to carry your voice to Capitol Hill.  We are putting the final touches on a brief survey where we will ask you to share your thoughts on why Peace Corps still matters, and how your Peace Corps experience has benefited your local community, your state, or our nation. Start thinking about your replies.  We expect to send this survey your way next week.
  • 2012 Advocacy Year-in-Review:  Once again this year, our January advocacy update will be a review of our 2012 activities.  You can expect our year-in-review during the first week in January.
  • National Day of Action Updates: Traffic will also start to pick up with news and announcements pertaining to the National Day of Action (see more below).

February 28th may still seem like a long ways off, but not when it comes to beginning the background preparations for our 9th Annual National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps.

Thanks to some great interns and volunteers, we are starting the process of updating biographical information for the new 113th Congress which begins its work in January.

Meanwhile, registrations for those planning to join us in Washington on February 28th are starting to trickle in.  Right now, we have ten registrants representing seven states and the District of Columbia.

PC headquarters Reports Examine Health, Safety, Security 

Reports in the recent past by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Peace Corps Office of Inspector General (IG) examine the progress and continuing challenges in supporting Peace Corps Volunteers harmed due to violence, illness or injury.

The reports came in the lead up to the one year anniversary of the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act being signed into law.  Follow this link to read Peace Corps' November report on progress in implementing provisions of the legislation.

Occasionally, followers of the United States Senate break the lawmakers down into two categories.  There are the "Showhorses" and then there are the "Workhorses".


If that standard were applied to the Peace Corps community, our December featured advocate certainly qualifies as a "Workhorse"!

Involvement with advocacy is one of many contributions Kate Schachter provides to the NPCA.  She's taken her advocacy experiences back to her home turf of Wisconsin, where she has been very involved with the RPCVs of Wisconsin-Madison.  But that's not all.  She's working to engage other NPCA member groups too!

Our first event of the 2013 year is here!! On January 12, 10am-2pm, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) is holding their seventh annual post-holiday recycling event! Volunteers will assist residents unloading their recyclables at four locations in Indy. Things to be recycled are Christmas trees, electronics, cardboard, and styrofoam.

If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up on the KIB website. If you HAVE NEVER volunteered with KIB before, go to this page: http://www.kibi.org/volunteer_sign-up_form.
If you HAVE volunteered with KIB before, go to this page to sign up: http://www.kibi.org/volunteer_event_sign_up?event=541. Please indicate that you would like to volunteer at the Broad Ripple station (so we can all work together!) and indicate that you are part of the Central Indiana Peace Corps Association.

Dear Peace Corps Family,
In a coincidental but fitting tribute to the man recognized as the leader of the civil rights movement in modern America, Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day both fall on January 21. President Barack Obama has called for the preceding Saturday, January 19 to be observed as a national day of service. I hope you will join Americans across the country and Peace Corps Volunteers around the world by serving others on this day.
At Peace Corps headquarters, we are making plans to work with our yearly local community partners for the day of service. One of those partners is the Capital Area Food Bank. Each year, the Food Bank distributes 30 million pounds of food, reaching more than 478,000 people in the Washington, D.C. region struggling with hunger.
The Peace Corps is proud to take part in the national day of service, which so well reflects our mission and values. Whatever your cause, wherever you are, I wish you great joy and satisfaction as you reach out to communities in need.

Peace Corps Week 2013 (February 24–March 2) is fast approaching, and the new Office of Third Goal and Returned Volunteer Services is spearheading efforts to make Peace Corps Week 2013 an exciting time for the Peace Corps family. Your help is needed to promote Americans’ understanding of the world and to help champion RPCVs as uniquely qualified, global professionals. Each day of Peace Corps Week 2013 will have a theme, and participation will be essential to making this a success. Astronaut and RPCV Joe Acaba speaks at Peace Corps
 
Astronaut and RPCV Joe Acaba visited Peace Corps headquarters in December as the keynote speaker for “Pasos Adelante: Hispanic Innovation in Action.†Acaba served as a PCV in the Dominican Republic and is the first astronaut of Puerto Rican descent. “The Peace Corps will always be a part of who I am. Serving in Peace Corps is just like living in space: You are working with people, away from your family, in a new environment, and you are occasionally faced with uncomfortable situations. I was just as affected by my service in Peace Corps as my time in space.†Following Acaba’s speech, a panel discussed the importance of diversity and innovation in an increasingly connected world. Other organizations represented on the panel included the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, Teach for America, and National Council of La Raza.

The Peace Corps, in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development “Feed the Future†initiative, has partnered with Feed the Future’s implementing partners to improve food security. The goal of this initiative is to support vulnerable women, children, and family members faced with hunger and poverty. Peace Corps Response is currently recruiting 15 Volunteers to serve in Guatemala as infant and child nutrition educators, monitoring and evaluation coordinators, and food production educators. Hotline, Peace Corps’ twice-monthly career bulletin, which has provided RPCVs with job announcements, scholarships, internships, and community service opportunities for over 40 years, is changing! The RPCVNetwork listserv and Hotline will be combined into one modern, interactive jobs board, which goes live on January 2. This new format will allow for real-time job postings and will be easier to search. For more information on the change, be sure to read the final December 15 issue of Hotline. “Throughout my life I have had a passion for community, and Coverdell Fellows has encouraged me to stay immersed and connected to the people I live with as well as to the people of Zambia,†said Andrea Irene Torre. She served in Zambia as an HIV/AIDS prevention specialist and is now studying nursing as a Coverdell Fellow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Thanks for all the great answers to the December question of the month: “What aspect of family life in your host country do you miss the most?†James Shreve, a current Volunteer in Malawi, shared the following:

“The aspect of family life, which I value the most in Malawi, centers on the extended family. In my village, most of the households are comprised of people who are, at a minimum, loosely related. I live in between two sisters and am surrounded by their children. It makes perfect sense to me that Malawi is referred to as the ‘warm heart of Africa.’ Just about every person you meet will take a break in their day to chat. I believe this amicable nature radiates because of the love for their families, who are seemingly all around. As the holidays approach, I'm sure Americans are filled with festive cheer. For the other 11 months, I believe a dose of Malawian's unabashed friendliness would do America well!â€

Our first event of the 2013 year is here!! On January 12, 10am-2pm, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) is holding their seventh annual post-holiday recycling event! Volunteers will assist residents unloading their recyclables at four locations in Indy. Things to be recycled are Christmas trees, electronics, cardboard, and styrofoam.

If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up on the KIB website. If you HAVE NEVER volunteered with KIB before, go to this page: http://www.kibi.org/volunteer_sign-up_form.

I am reaching out today because Arizona Teaching Fellows (www.arizonateachingfellows.org) is cultivating community nonprofit partners with a shared mission to close the achievement gap for our nation’s school children. Our fellowship application deadline is January 28 and we need your help to find people who are interested in training to become outstanding teachers.

Did You Know?

·         Nearly 30% of Arizona high school students do not graduate from high school.  Of those that do, less than half are eligible for admission to Arizona universities. Teachers, who have a greater impact on student learning than any other school factor, have the power to change their chances.

·         African-American, Latino/Hispanic, and Native American children are 3x as likely to grow up in low-income areas, typically with the least access to high-quality instruction.

·         Nationally, Arizona ranks 44th out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in overall educational outcomes for students.

Arizona Teaching Fellows is a program of TNTP (www.tntp.org) a national nonprofit committed to ending the injustice of educational inequality. Founded by teachers in 1997, TNTP works with schools, districts and states to provide excellent teachers to the students who need them most and advance policies and practices that ensure effective teaching in every classroom.  The Teaching Fellows program recruits, trains, and selects outstanding individuals to teach in high needs schools throughout our state and I’m sure you personally know people who have the potential to become exceptional educators.  We are looking for individuals from diverse backgrounds who want to put their knowledge and experience to work in the urban districts of Phoenix, Arizona - the tribal communities of Page, Holbrook, and Sanders Arizona - and the southwest border schools of Yuma, Arizona.

Hello or Buna ziua, as we say here in Moldova!

 

I would first like to introduce myself as Victoria Filbrandt, a Peace Corps volunteer in Moldova, a quaint Eastern European country. Along with 2 other volunteers, we are working on planning an event where we will be walking across our small, beautiful country with the goal of promoting volunteerism and a healthy life-style, be it the 20th anniversary of Peace Corps in Moldova as well. The event, Turul Moldovei, is a 15-day walk where we will be stopping in various villages each day to hold events for the village’s youth and community members. We will walk anywhere from 6 to 18 miles per day.

 

The reason I am writing to you today is because we need some extra help and what is better than helping out a group of Peace Corps volunteers on the other side of the world! Sue Murphy, one of the other primary organizers of the event is one of your own, a local from Bloomington, IN. We are not asking for monetary donations, nonetheless if you would rather we are accepting. Since this walk will be in the summer, heat, sun and exhaustion will be our primary obstacles. We are looking for donated goods such to help us over come these obstacles and make the walk and event as a whole as enjoyable as possible with your added help! Any and all things, big or small are appreciated. Please see the below list of suggested items. We are also seeking items to perhaps give out at the many events.

As our Midwest Peace Corps Office kicks off our summer community outreach initiatives we have been informed of a great opportunity for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers in and around the Indianapolis community to become involved with the week of June 16-22nd.  The opportunity is with Project Stepping Stone of Indiana in which roughly 80 talented and ambitious 16 to 18 year-old students from around Indiana will embark on a one-week college prep summer program in Indianapolis that assists Hispanic high school students successfully prepare for college and beyond.  In line with the third goal of Peace Corps and the commitment to service Returned Peace Corps Volunteers possess, Project Stepping Stone is seeking adult mentors for the young scholars as they participate in many activities throughout the week.  What mentors could be better than Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who have seen the world from a global macro and micro level!  Returned Peace Corps Volunteers can locate the schedule here and please contact the coordinators Kathy Cabello via phone at 312.209.9991 or you can email Kathy and Dottie Parson at the following addresses:

A colleague and I are also attempting to coordinate a Peace Corps Night with the Indianapolis Indians and Indiana Fever on June 21st and 22nd along with a Peace Corps information table at the Eiteljorg Museum’s Annual Indian Market Festival on the 22nd .  More details to come on these events.

It was a pleasure speaking with you and hearing of your interest in getting involved with Project Stepping Stone. Attached is a flyer with information on the Career Fair & Mock Interview session.
 
We welcome your participation and hope your team members will be able to participate. 
 
Also, the community service project is on Friday in the afternoon (6/21). We would like for you or a volunteer to address the students on Friday after/before the project to talk about volunteerism and giving back. If this is something you would like to do, please let me know. 
 
I'll send you something on being a mentor in a separate email.
