I am an organizer for the Lawrence, Indiana Service Unit of Girl Scouts.

Im putting together or Thinking Day celebration for 2/19/2011 and was hoping to
find a few volunteers that have worked in elementary schools around the world
and would be interested in speaking to our group about life/school/scouting in
the countries in which you have traveled and worked.

If you are available and could spend alittle time with our scouts we would
greatly appreicate it. I would gladly give you the foundation of Thinking Day
and what we will be doing during this event if you would like to contact me
either on the board or off.

Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Thanks,

Peace Corps Advisory: Peace Corps Marks 50 Years of Service on March 1

WHAT:aMarch 1, 2011, marks the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s singing of an executive order creating the Peace Corps. Today, over 200,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers in 139 host countries.

Background information: March 1, 1961: Only weeks after being sworn in, President Kennedy signed the executive order establishing Peace Corps on a ‘temporary, pilot basis.” President Kennedy announced the signing of the executive order and the formation of the Peace Corps at a national press conference.

ASSETS:

Compilation footage of 50 years of Peace Corps service, from 1961 through 2011, is also available upon request.

*Both audio and video available in broadcast quality.

TRANSCRIPT OF PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY SIGNING THE EXECUTIVE ORDER ESTABLISHING THE PEACE CORPS:

“I have today signed an Executive Order providing for the establishment of a Peace Corps on a temporary pilot basis. I am also sending to Congress a message proposing authorization of a permanent Peace Corps. This Corps will be a pool of trained American men and women sent overseas by the U.S. Government or through private institutions and organizations to help foreign countries meet their urgent needs for skilled manpower.

“It is our hope to have 500 or more people in the field by the end of the year.

“The initial reactions to the Peace Corps proposal are convincing proof that we have, in this country, an immense reservoir of such men and women—anxious to sacrifice their energies and time and toil to the cause of world peace and human progress.

“In establishing our Peace Corps we intend to make full use of the resources and talents of private institutions and groups. Universities, voluntary agencies, labor unions and industry will be asked to share in this effort—contributing diverse sources of energy and imagination—making it clear that the responsibility for peace is the responsibility of our entire society.

“We will only send abroad Americans who are wanted by the host country—who have a real job to do—and who are qualified to do that job. Programs will be developed with care, and after full negotiation, in order to make sure that the Peace Corps is wanted and will contribute to the welfare of other people. Our Peace Corps is not designed as an instrument of diplomacy or propaganda or ideological conflict. It is designed to permit our people to exercise more fully their responsibilities in the great common cause of world development.

“Life in the Peace Corps will not be easy. There will be no salary and allowances will be at a level sufficient only to maintain health and meet basic needs. Men and women will be expected to work and live alongside the nationals of the country in which they are stationed—doing the same work, eating the same food, talking the same language.

“But if the life will not be easy, it will be rich and satisfying. For every young American who participates in the Peace Corps—who works in a foreign land—will know that he or she is sharing in the great common task of bringing to man that decent way of life which is the foundation of freedom and a condition of peace.”

About the Peace Corps:President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961, by executive order. Throughout 2011, Peace Corps is commemorating 50 years of promoting peace and friendship around the world. Historically, more than 200,000 Americans have served with the Peace Corps to promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of 139 host countries. Today, 8,655 volunteers are working with local communities in 77 host countries. Peace Corps volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment.  www.peacecorps.gov

Would like to say thank you for all of the thought and hard work that went into
it. It was quite enjoyable. I will admit that since I've been back, I haven't
really had any contact with any other RPCV's. I spent almost all of my time in
the bush (Sierra Leone Agriculture Program '78-'83) and very seldom even saw any
in country volunteers. It would be nice to hear some creole again or maybe even
some Kono.

Good evening,

A current Indiana Peace Corps Volunteer serving in the Ukraine has a partnership project that she's requesting funding for. Information about her and the project is below for your review. More details about the project and community contribution can be found on the website below.

If you are able to contribute, please make a donation (any size) at: https://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=donate.contribute.projDetail&projdesc=343-210

$2570 is still needed to fully fund the project.

My name is Alexandra Collins, and I am a Purdue graduate and Peace Corps Volunteer currently serving in Kirovograd, Ukraine.  I teach English and Country Studies at the Kirovograd Socio-Pedagogical Academy, an institute specializing in the training of future English teachers.  The school is currently working to remodel and repair the largest room in the building.  Our goal is to turn this space into a professional conference room.  My school frequently holds academic conferences and seminars, and there is hardly enough seating and insufficient equipment to have effective meetings.  I am planning on having conferences on environmental issues (mainly on the subject of water quality), and human trafficking in the spring, so improving this conference room would be a necessary step in the process.

In addition, my school's Student Parliament would finally have an adequate place to hold their meetings, as well as a place for the students to meet for their after school English speaking and movie clubs.

Please see image below:

In June 2009, Richard Sitler embarked on an epic journey to document Peace Corps Volunteers serving communities around the world. Over the next two years, Richard would find himself traversing the planet while staying with Peace Corps Volunteers, experiencing their communities and work sites, and documenting what it’s like to be a Volunteer in the modern Peace Corps.

Richard discovered that the values President Kennedy had imagined for the Peace Corps in his famous 1960 speech at the University of Michigan continue to be evident in the organization today. However, the Volunteer has evolved over the years.

Volunteers today are no longer required to conform to the stereotypical image of young idealists giving up their comfortable lives to live in a grass hut. Rather, Richard discovers Volunteers are using modern technology, such as laptops and cell phones, to not only enrich their experience, but to impact their community as well. He sees how retired professionals bring years of experience and knowledge to their organizations. And how, as it always has been, Volunteers are changing lives while being forever changed themselves.

This is the story of Peace Corps and its Volunteers, fifty years after conception.

Dear Friends, Family, and Peace Corps Community of Indiana,

Good afternoon, I hope you are all doing well! If you could take just a minute out of your busy day to read this, I would appreciate it so much.

I wanted to thank you all for the support you've given me as a Peace Corps Volunteer, whether it has been through your friendship, donations to my project, reading my blog, or just your thoughts and prayers. I have only 6 short months left, but so much still to do. As many of you know, I'm fundraising to develop a recreational area for the youth in my community. We are going to build bleachers for our basketball court, landscape, install flood lights (since we have random, few hours of electricity each day), repaint our basketball court and community center, and a few other things. For those that have donated, thank you SO much, and if you know of ANYONE else who would be willing to contribute, please forward them the info about my project (talk to parents, schools, church groups, etc.) For those that have yet to donate, you can make a tax-deductible contribution at the following link:https://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=donate.contribute.projDetail&projdesc=517-418.

If I don't raise the full amount of my original set goal of $4993, I will receive no funds; it's all or nothing. Your contributions will make a direct, lasting impact on my community and the work we are trying to do here. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Peace,
Sarah

ps. I've included a couple pictures of the project site. Once the project is finished and we hold a basketball tournament, I will post pictures on Facebook and my blog.

Dear Stephanie,

--Next week, hearings will be held before a House Committee with a focus on physical and sexual assaults of Peace Corps volunteers.

--If you believe in the importance of universal basic education, this is an important week to take action.

--And, from late June through September, there are lots of opportunities to engage the offices of your lawmakers for direct advocacy.

Here is your May monthly advocacy update.

US Capitol
Congress Prepares for May 11th Safety/Security Hearing

The House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee has scheduled a full committee hearing next Wednesday, May 11th, to take up concerns pertaining to sexual assault and other safety and security issues confronting Peace Corps volunteers.

The morning hearing will include testimony from several RPCVs and the mother of Kate Puzey, a Benin volunteer who was murdered during service and the subject of an investigation aired earlier this year on ABC News.

Also scheduled to testify are Peace Corps Director Aaron Williams on last year's agency assessment and the issue of agency reform. The Peace Corps Inspector General and a representative of the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network are also scheduled to testify.

Follow this link for more details on the hearing.

The group First Response Action, led by RPCV survivors of sexual assault, have launched a petition drive asking Congress to support legislation to establish certain rights for those subjected to sexual or physical assault while serving as volunteers. Follow this link to read and sign the petition.

GreigsNational Day of Action 2011 Video

A day of strong Peace Corps advocacy, the National Day of Action brought together RPCVs serving in every region of the world over all the Peace Corps eras to urge support for Peace Corps funding and Peace Corps Commemorative Legislation.

For those who couldn't attend, hear the comments of several participants about their advocacy experience.  View our video about the 2011 National Day of Action.

House Letter for Increased PC Funding Receives

108 Signatures

Led by the trio of RPCV California Congressmen - Sam Farr, Mike Honda, and John Garamendi - and with the support and hard work of many members of the Peace Corps community, 108 members of the House of Representatives signed a Dear Colleague letter in support of increased Peace Corps funding. The letter supports President Obama's Peace Corps FY 2012 funding request of $440 million, a $40 million increase from last year.

We face an uphill climb, however.  Last month, Congress finalized its budget for the current fiscal year which included a nearly $26 million cut in Peace Corps funding.  That's a reduction of 6.5 percent and drops spending for the current year to just over $374 million.

Milwaukee meetingReady to Advocate in Person?

Various Opportunities Are On the Way

There are lots of opportunities to participate in advocacy meetings in the coming months.

If you are coming to DC for the Peace Corps exhibits at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in late June or early July:  Take advantage of this trip to schedule meetings with your lawmakers!  Contact us as soon as possible, so we can help you prepare for those meetings.  No previous advocacy experience necessary.

If you are going to be close to home anytime between August 1 - 15: Make plans to participate in our August District Meeting Days.  With Congress scheduled to be on recess, this is a great time to plan for meetings back near your home.  Contact us as soon as possible to help coordinate meetings in your state/region...You can be just like members of the Milwaukee Peace Corps Association (pictured above) who met last August with staff in the District Office of Senator Herb Kohl.

And, don't forget to join us in Washington in September, as our 50th anniversary activities will kick off with an advocacy orientation on the evening of September 21st, and a full day of Capitol Hill advocacy on September 22nd.  More than 400 people have already registered for this event.  Register for advocacy day and other 50th events by clicking here.

Blue RibbonBig Week for Global Education

To build support for action on behalf of the estimated 70 million children around the world who don't have a chance to receive basic education, May 2nd through 8th has been designated as a Global Action Week to bring more awareness to this issue.

How can you help?  For one thing, the simple act of wearing a blue ribbon will demonstrate solidarity and serve as an opportunity to engage others who will inquire about your ribbon.

There's more.  A lot more.  Schools, families and communities in more than 100 nations are organizing a "Lesson For All" to build understanding and awareness about basic education.

No matter how you take action, drop us a note, send us a photo and let us know how you took part in Global Action Week.

Shriver Condolence Book Delivered

Shortly after his passing, NPCA invited RPCVs to submit their recollections of Sargent Shriver to be compiled into a book of condolences for the family.

Over a two-week period, we received almost 650 responses from individuals representing every decade of Peace Corps service, from virtually every state in the nation.

Your reflections on Sargent Shriver were collected into a book of condolences and delivered to Sarge's son, Tim Shriver, last week at the offices of the Special Olympics.  Thanks to everyone who contributed to this remembrance.

With Jenifer's ankle on the mend, our advocacy program put it to the test!. She helped distribute NPCA letters to approximately 200 congressional offices, urging lawmakers to sign onto the Peace Corps funding Dear Colleague letter (see story above).

The workings of government is not a new experience for Jenifer. From 1999 - 2000, she served as a Legislative Assistant for then State Senator and current Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC).  Between 2005 - 2008, she was a Field Representative in the San Diego district office of Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).

"I would like to see more of our representatives in Congress visit Peace Corps volunteers to see us in action and see how we are living," says Jenifer, who adds the Honduras Peace Corps program is planning for a reduction in volunteers due to budget cuts.  "I'd like to see funding spent on more sustainable projects, to make sure those projects keep going...I'd also like to see more professional volunteers with advanced degrees, and a continued expansion of the Fellows Program."

Jenifer is scheduled to return to her Peace Corps assignment on May 19th.  We wish her the very best as she continues to serve our country, and thank her for her recent service to the NPCA community!

Hi all,
I had a strong feeling that there are several people on this listserve that would appreciate a website I just learned about that reviews ethnic restaurants in Indy.
I just had a wonder evening attending Chew on This which was put on by the Indiana Humanities Council. At 10 different locations across the City, groups of people met to have an ethnic dinner, most of whom did not know one another before the event started. I tried a new restaurant named Passage to India which is apparently the only all-vegetarian sit down restaurant in Indiana. I thought it was wonderful, as was my first Indian beer. At the event, I also learned a little bit more about the new project going on at the Lafayette Square area which will hopefully bring a lot of attention to the numerous, numerous ethnic restaurants out there. I've been meaning to go to a restaurant out there that I heard serves dim sum.

But the goal of this email was to send you information about a new website I learned of while at the dinner: indyethnicfood.com. The website was started about 8 years ago by a man who wanted to ensure that information about local ethnic restaurants was made public, in the hopes that it would help them have more lasting power. He had grown tired of his favorite restaurants closing down within only a few months.

It's a website that requires you to register to get access but the registration is free. You can search for ethnic restaurants in the city by type or by zip code; you can also look at reviews of the restaurants. I haven't spent very much time on the website, but it sounds much more comprehensive than anything I've come across so far.

I hope the information helps and you find some new restaurants to try that are off the beaten path. I also hope you can go to Chew on This next year!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to give you a heads up that the program I emailed you about last week has a reduced rate. Someone donated funds to help sponsor the program. Although you can occasionally go to some great international events for free, this one does include lunch at the Columbia Club, which is a really, really good lunch. So lunch and programming are now only $15.00. Hope you go!

Greetings! As you may have noticed from recent advertising, WLD will be hosting the Ambassador of the Principality of Liechtenstein, Claudia Fritsche, for a luncheon on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Columbia Club. I have just learned that a generous benefactor has agreed to fund part of each attendees' registration cost in the hopes of attending a good size crowd for the Ambassador's speech. As a result, you can enjoy lunch at the Columbia Club and the Ambassador's remarks for the low price of $15 (rather than the $35 fee we have been advertising). I encourage you to go to

http://www.indybar.org/events-education/calendar/2011-06/176 now to register at this new, low price. (If you have already registered and paid, please contact Mary Kay Price at the IBA to arrange for a refund).

Hey everyone,

Have you been to an Indianapolis Indians game yet this summer? It is Peace Corps Awareness Night at Victory Field this Tuesday, July 5th, so come celebrate the holiday and Peace Corps 50th anniversary! There will be representatives from the Chicago office there, and there is rumor of an RPCV throwing the ceremonial first pitch. Victory Field is a great place for families and friends to get together, and what better reason to attend a game than to celebrate Peace Corps service! Game is at 7pm, and according to the Indians website it is a 2 for 1 day - there is a coupon that can be found in the Sunday Indianapolis Star. See their website for all the game info. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp?sid=t484

The community service event that I emailed about previously will be occurring as well at the Wheeler Ministries during the day, and RPCVs are also assisting with the Kappa Convention on July 5-10th. If you are interested in helping out, you can still assist with the Kappa Convention. Let me know if you are interested and can give you more info.

Have a great and safe holiday weekend, and hope to see you at the game on the 5th!

Subject: RPCV Action Needed to Pass Kate Puzey Legislation

Greetings RPCV group -

The Kate Puzey Peace Corps Protection Act was introduced June 23 in the House and June 27 in the Senate. As of this moment, the House bill has 30 co-sponsors and the Senate bill has 9 co-sponsors. In fact, the National Peace Corps Association, the largest group catering to Returned Volunteers, has expressed their support for the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Protection Act. Their support is critical, and so is support from other RPCV groups across the U.S. like yours.

Would you be willing to help advocate for this important legislation to support Volunteers who experience or report crime?

Here are three BIG ways that you and your RPCV members can help!
  • Call your local representatives (current location, hometown, college town, etc.) and ask them to co-sponsor the bill - If you need it, you can visit this link to find names and numbers for your House representatives and this link to find your Senate representatives. You can visit our partner Kate's Voice, begun in memory of the murdered Volunteer Kate Puzey, to visit their guide to contacting representatives. All of this information and more is available on a blog post here.
  • Contact House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Affairs Committee members to ask them to co-sponsor the bill. Visit our blog post here for contact names, numbers and emails for the representatives who have yet to sign on.
  • Contact House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Ileana Ros-Lehtinen to ask her to bring this bill up for a vote before the August recess. Call her D.C. office at 202-225-3931 and let her staff know that you are in favor of increased support for Volunteers who become victims of crime and those who report crime.

We greatly appreciate you forwarding this to your RPCV group members, posting to facebook or sharing information with your RPCV group members at functions or events. Any amount of time that you or your members may be willing to call, email or visit local representatives to let them know how important this bill is and why you support it is vital to it's passing!

Please feel free to contact us if you have questions. First Response Action has been working on this issue for nearly two years and is passionate about Peace Corps and support for all Peace Corps Volunteers. If you'd like a speaker at your next RPCV gathering, please reply to this email. We have supporters throughout the country who would be willing to talk about this issue in more detail.

Here's to positive change!

This is the story of Peace Corps and its Volunteers, fifty years after conception Please click "like" on the facebook page and share it on yours.

Greetings,

This Wednesday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will conduct a 'mark-up' of House Bill 2337, the Kate Puzey Volunteer Protection Act of 2011. You can help support this bill by contacting your local representatives or representatives on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.  If you have questions about the bill, you can contact Luke Murry in Congressman Poe's office at luke.murry@....

Please call or email your local representatives and members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and ask them to support this bill!

Visit our blog for information on whom to contact and what to say.  Taking ten minutes of your time to email your Senator or member of Congress could help make all the difference.  You can also visit our website for a sample email to your representatives.

Your support of the Kate Puzey Volunteer Protection Act of 2011 will help ensure that Peace Corps Volunteers who become victims of crime will receive vital services and have rights which are currently not guaranteed to survivors!

It's also important to note that this week is effectively Peace Corps week as we are leading up to the 50th anniversary of the Corps.  Let's make the 50th anniversary the year that legislation is passed to support whistle blowers and victims of crime!

Peace,

Just back from the PC 50th events in Washington. Some of the feel-good celebrations were fun but left me feeling a bit empty, as I was expecting more on how to keep PC relevant for the next 50 years. Strange how this topic was completely avoided! That is until I was at the PC authors event at the Library of Congress, where I picked up info on a new book, Peasants Come Last: A Memoir of the Peace Corps at Fifty. After reading strong endorsements by my favorite congressman (John Lewis) and Richard Celeste, former PC director, I ordered it on Amazon, and read the entire book in one sitting (on my Kindle on the train back home). If you care about the future of PC and reforms needed to strengthen an agency that has become way too bureaucratic and top-heavy, read Peasants Come Last by Larry Brown.

Greetings

The bill that passed the Senate last month has a sunset provision which would require the provisions in the act to end in seven years. The Senate is trying to pass a resolution to the amendment which would amend this sunset provision so that the provisions of confidentiality, training requirements and the extension of the Inspector General would not be affected by the sunset. It's important that these key provisions remain standing to continue supporting victims in Peace Corps.

The bill needs your support to pass! We are asking that you call your Senator(s) TODAY to ask for them to pass this resolution in support of victims and whistleblowers.

Once this resolution is finalized, the bill will go to the House. This is a critical step in the passage of the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act. We appreciate any calls you are able to make! Weve included a sample script which you can use as a guide if you wish.

Sample script:

Hello, Im calling as a (former Peace Corps Volunteer, supporter of the Kate Puzey bill, etc.). I am a constituent in (Senators) district and I would like to encourage (Senator) to vote in favor of the resolution to amend the sunset provision. These provisions are vital to the continued support of victims of rape and sexual assault as well as whistleblowers. Thank you for your time.
