American Red Cross Response Center Call Agent
Often people want to help when a national disaster (hurricanes Hanna
and Ike) occur but can not take the time from other duties to respond.
The American Red Cross Call Center offers an opportunity to assist and
stay in central Indiana. During a national disaster, call center
agents answer calls to the Red Cross help-line. That is, people in the
disaster area call their local Red Cross and we answer the phone from
central Indiana. The call center agent gathers essential information
about caller and situation, provides relevant information, makes
referrals and gives support to the individuals affected by the
disasters. Call Agents work 4 to 8 hour shifts, weekdays, weeknights
and weekends. Internet navigation skills are required. Additional
information is available through our basic on-line training at
www.redcross-indy.org/callcenter. The telephone contact number is
317-684-4309, which has a voice mail to receive calls.

Hello everyone!

I am writing to request your assistance for a project in my Working in Global Health (PubH6131) class at University of Minnesota .  I have a group presentation on the topic of "Roles of NGOs in Global Health — Do They Make a Difference?" and would like to add a personal perspective.

Many of you have great experience working with NGOs and I would like to share your stories.  If you are willing, please respond to the following before November 22, 2008:

1.  Have you worked with NGOs on health related activities?  If so, in what capacity?
2.  Describe your successes.
3.  What were some of the challenges you faced?
4.  What suggestions do you have for overcoming such challenges?
5.
How do you want your responses to be reported?  ex: Abigail, Peace Corps Moldova 2000-2004; or RPCV Costa Rica 1994-1996 (Be sure to let me know so I can respect your wishes).

If you have any pictures you would like to share, please attach those to your email with your exciting responses.

Thank you for your help and have a wonderful day!

Hi Debbie and CIPCA!  I am in touch with a publication called “Indiana Lawyer,” and they would like to feature an Indiana RPCV who practiced law prior to joining Peace Corps.  So I’m hoping you can help get the word out this week to see if there are any members who fit this profile.  You can advise them to get in touch with me this week, and I can connect them to the writer.

Thanks so much!

Increase your awareness on AIDS and learn more about Camp UNITE while enjoying performances from local artist Jascha, Lovely Houses and Cliff Ritchey.

The event is free and open to the public. However, a donation of up to $5 dollars is strongly encouraged, but not required. All proceeds will be donated to the UNITE Foundation to help support Camp UNITE.

WHEN: 8-11 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2008

WHERE: The Earth House Coffee and Books

            237 N. East St.

            Indianapolis

DETAILS: Inspired by the power of Camp UNITE to transform the lives of Togolese campers, four former Peace Corps Volunteers and organizers of the camp met in 2008 to create the UNITE Foundation. The UNITE Foundation is dedicated to providing West African youth with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy, productive lives so they can have a positive impact in their nation's development. While Camp UNITE has been successful, it still suffers from the shortage of funds and each year faces the potential of being shut down.

The organization is also committed to sharing the world of West Africa with American youth. The UNITE Foundation believes that by engaging American adolescents in African culture and development, they can encourage them to also become agents of change in the future. Represent Returned Peace Corps Volunteers in the 2009 Inaugural Parade!

Now is your chance to be a part of history!  The Returned Peace Corps Community has been selected from among groups around the country to march in the Presidential Inaugural Parade on January 20, 2009

A total of 200 marchers will carry flags and banners from every Peace Corps country.  Marchers will need to be available to meet at the starting point at 8:00am that morning to go through the security process.  You must be able to stand OUTSIDE all day - perhaps until after dark - and carry a 5 lb flag while walking.  The Parade will happen rain/snow/shine and all marchers should be prepared for a very cold day.  Because of security protocol, we must submit marchers' names a month in advance and there are no substitutions.

Members of the National Peace Corps Association are encouraged to put your name into a lottery to be selected at random to march in the Parade.  You must include your NPCA member ID number with your submission.

NPCA Member ID Number: You can find your NPCA member ID number by logging on to the NPCA website.  Find your number or become a member here: https://www.npcaonline.org/npcassa/ssaauthmain.login_page.  After you have logged in, click on "username and password" (the top menu item) to see your member ID number.  Your number is also located next to your name on your Worldview Magazine label.  No phone calls, please.

All entries are due by December 15.  No exceptions for late entries.  Incomplete entries and entries from non-NPCA members will not be considered.  We will notify all selected marchers via email by December 23.

To submit your name, please send an email including ALL of the following information in CAPITAL letters:

The work of Peace Corps volunteers is diverse and includes a range of programs within education, youth and community development, health, HIV/AIDS prevention, information technology, business development, environment and agriculture, as well as secondary projects initiated by volunteers themselves, such as book drives, school and house construction, community businesses and much more.

Regardless of the work area, Peace Corps Volunteers gain two years of professional experience in a developing country.  Volunteers learn new languages and cultures, develop project and management skills, espouse flexibility and initiative, and enrich their classroom instruction in cross-cultural settings.  Peace Corps creates global citizens prepared to engage in a competitive workforce.

I will be on campus  January 14th & 15th and February 17th & 18th, and would like the opportunity to speak with your majors in a specialized information session to discuss opportunities or speak to your classes, halls, or organizations about our international opportunities.  Information sessions take about an hour.  When I speak to classes and organizations, I take 5-10 minutes providing a brief introduction about Peace Corps, sharing about the life of a Peace Corps Volunteer and the benefits associated with service, and answering any questions students may have.

If you are interested in having me talk about Peace Corps with your majors, with your organization, or with your classes, please contact me at bblum@....  If you are unable to take time out of your class period, please inform me if you would like a folder of information to share with your students/colleagues.  In addition, through your leadership position, I would sincerely appreciate if you provide your students and colleagues with information about the opportunities Peace Corps has to offer in one or all of the following ways:

If you are interested in having me talk about Peace Corps with your majors, with your organization, or with your classes, please contact me at bblum@....  If you are unable to take time out of your class period, please inform me if you would like a folder of information to share with your students/colleagues.  In addition, through your leadership position, I would sincerely appreciate if you provide your students and colleagues with information about the opportunities Peace Corps has to offer in one or all of the following ways:

  • Encourage students and colleagues to attend our general information sessions listed below

  • Display posters and/or flyers in your department area (if desired, please contact me at bblum@... so I can mail you copies!)

  • Play a Peace Corps short DVD clip during one of your class periods / meetings (if desired, please contact me at bblum@... so I can mail you a DVD)

  • Forward this message to interested students, faculty, and friends

REMINDER:

PEACE CORPS REPRESENTATIVE will be at Ball State

February 17th & 18th

February 11, 2009

Greetings from the Chicago Regional Recruiting Office!

We politely request that you assist us in spreading the word about Peace Corps.  Only with your continued support we can continue to reach and encourage individuals within your community to consider servings as Peace Corps Volunteers!

Peace Corps Regional Recruiter, Betsy Blum, who served in Guinea, will be visiting Ball State, introducing community members to the Peace Corps experience.  She and other Returned Peace Corps Volunteers will share what it’s really like to be immersed in a new culture helping others half-way around the globe and how the two-year service changed their perspective on the world.

The work of Peace Corps volunteers is diverse and includes a range of programs within education, youth and community development, health, HIV/AIDS prevention, information technology, business development, environment and agriculture, as well as secondary projects initiated by volunteers themselves, such as book drives, school and house construction, community businesses and much more.

è    Opportunities in Education, Youth Outreach, Community Development include: Primary Education Teacher Training, Secondary Education English Teacher Training, Secondary Education Mathematics or Science Teaching, Secondary Education English Teaching, Special Education Teacher Training, University English Teaching, Youth Outreach, Community Development, and Sign Language.  If you do not have the ability to serve as a Peace Corps Education Volunteer at this time – Consider connecting with a Volunteer through our World Wise Schools program or sharing with your students our Peace Corps {teens} web site!

è    Opportunities in Health and HIV/AIDS include: Health Extension, Public Health Education, Water and Sanitation Extension, and HIV/AIDS.

è    Opportunities in Business Development and Information Technology include: Business Advising, Business Development, Nongovernmental Organization Development, Urban and Regional Planning, and Information Technology.

è    Opportunities in Environment include: Environmental Education and Awareness, Forestry, Parks and Wildlife, and Environmental and Water Resources Engineering.

è    Opportunities in Agriculture include: Agroforestry, Applied Agriculture, Farm Management and Agribusiness, and Animal Husbandry.

Since 1961, more than 190,000 volunteers have helped promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of the 139 countries where volunteers have been invited to serve.  Returned Peace Corps volunteers’ commitment to service often continues back home in their communities and around the globe.

Fundraising Professional Needed
All Expense Paid Volunteer Opportunity

in India

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (the Foundation - http://pedaids.org) is a worldwide leader in the fight against pediatric AIDS, working to halt the pandemic and help those already infected with HIV. Before the Foundation's inception, children affected by HIV and AIDS had no voice - and few medicines and interventions were available specifically for them.  Thanks to the courageous efforts of Elizabeth Glaser and those who follow in her footsteps, the Foundation improves life for millions of children and families affected by AIDS each year by funding groundbreaking scientific research, providing lifesaving services, and advocating for children around the globe. The Foundation is currently providing support to more than 3,200 sites, in 18 countries worldwide.

THE FOUNDATION'S WORK IN INDIA: Over 2.4 million people are currently living with HIV in India, including an estimated 880,000 women and 94,000 children. Since 2002, the Foundation has supported the largest private-sector prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) project in India, second only to the government program in size. The Foundation operates within a consortium, led by Solidarity and Action Against the HIV Infection in India (SAATHII - http://www.saathii.org/), that is comprised of seven NGOs and one university. The consortium has developed state-of-the-art PMTCT packages of services and provides support at 127 sites in 4 southern states, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. The consortium also has limited activities in Manipur where the epidemic is largely driven by injection drug users. The position will be based out of the SAATHII office in Hyderabad and will include travel in India.

corporate fundraising.

Subject: Recruiting Stories to Share based on Core Expectations
kwegner@...
Send Email Send Email

Dear Returned Peace Corps Volunteer:

Greetings from the Chicago Regional Peace Corps Office! I hope this finds you very well, enjoy a bit of summer and sunshine.

I am writing today to gather some “stories” from you.  Peace Corps has developed in writing Core Expectations For Peace Corps Volunteers (see attached document).  It would be fantastic if you could provide me with one or more stories that could be shared with prospects or interviewees that relate to the Core Expectations.

1.      Prepare your personal and professional life to make a commitment to serve abroad for a full term of 27 months

2.      Commit to improving the quality of life of the people with whom you live and work; and, in doing so, share your skills, adapt them, and learn new skills as needed

3.      Serve where the Peace Corps asks you to go, under conditions of hardship, if necessary, and with the flexibility needed for effective service

4.      Recognize that your successful and sustainable development work is based on the local trust and confidence you build by living in, and respectfully integrating yourself into, your host community and culture

5.      Recognize that you are responsible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your personal conduct and professional performance

6.      Engage with host country partners in a spirit of cooperation, and mutual learning and respect

7.      Work within the rules and regulations of the Peace Corps and the local and national laws of the country where you serve

8.      Exercise judgment and personal responsibility to protect your health, safety, and well-being and that of others

9.      Recognize that you will be perceived, in your host country and community, as a representative of the people, cultures, values, and traditions of the United States of America

  1. Represent responsibly the people, cultures, values, and traditions of your host country and community to people in the United States both during and following your service

If you choose to share a story or two, please reply to me at kwegner@... and note the core expectation along with your story.  In addition, please provide me with your name, country of service, years of service, etc. if you are okay with me sharing that personal information.

Thanks much in advance for your help with this project!

In sincere appreciation for all the continued service via our third goal…

In community, service, and learning,

Kristin

United We Serve

THE DIRECTOR OF THE PEACE CORPS
WASHINGTON, D.C.

June 19, 2009

Dear Returned Peace Corps Volunteers:

I am proud to invite you to join President Obama's summer service initiative - United We Serve - a call to all Americans to join a volunteer effort this summer and be part of building a new foundation for America, one community at a time.

United We Serve officially starts on June 22 and runs through the National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11. Since his inauguration, the President has called on all Americans to serve their communities and be a part of building a better future for our country.

At nearly 200,000 strong, returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) have a tradition of making a difference in their communities by selflessly contributing their skills and experience through their dedication to service. Across America, individual RPCVs and RPCV groups are engaged in grassroots projects like restoring hiking trails in Denver, providing assistance and education opportunities to refugees in San Francisco, and offering volunteer translation services for families with medical emergencies in St. Louis.

The President believes that America's new foundation will be built one community at a time, through an ethic of service and volunteerism and the personal commitment of individuals willing to give of themselves to build a better future. This is a commitment that is well understood by everyone in the Peace Corps community.

When volunteers commit to long-term service projects in their communities, they build expertise and strengthen their community's capacity to meet its challenges.  In many places, community-based organizations' capacity is strained, so we are calling on all RPCVs to take a leadership role in recruiting and organizing their friends, family, and neighbors to bring about the change that is needed. Maybe that is organizing a neighborhood to rebuild a playground, creating a clothing drive, or volunteering to refurbish a local school.

I encourage you to visit www.serve.gov, to find service opportunities near you and to post your own projects. Throughout the summer, the Obama administration will look to highlight examples of exemplary service - both in existing programs and new ones - that meet the President's call by building a community's capacity to address our most pressing problems. These stories of service will lay the groundwork for future efforts.

You can learn more about RPCV United We Serve participation and share your own story of service by visiting www.peacecorps.gov/unitedweserve.

I intend to contribute to United We Serve in my local community. I hope you will consider completing a project in yours.

Thank you all who have responded to my request for contact on the basis of a
math background! I, however, must issue "mea culpas" as I forgot a key point,
and that is: ".........with a mathematics background and your name is Mike
Sheppard.........."

Hi Stephanie,

Ever feel like you finished your two years of service in Africa but never had a chance to put your experiences to use afterward?

That's why the National Peace Corps Association just launched Africa Rural Connect.  We wanted you, a fellow Peace Corps alum, to be among the first to know about this unprecedented global online collaboration. At NPCA, we're calling on YOU – along with all Returned Peace Corps Volunteers – to help lead the charge by formulating the most creative and practical plans for Africa's agricultural development at Africa Rural Connect.

Work together with the African Diaspora and others who have lived or worked in Africa.  We believe that collaboration will bring about the greatest ideas for change.

Go to http://www.AfricaRuralConnect.org to share your plan now – even if it's just the seed of an idea.  You could win one of the monthly $3,000 prizes for the best idea, or the $20,000 grand prize to help implement your idea.

You can also click here to check out a video to learn more: (http://arc.peacecorpsconnect.org/node/170)

See you online!

Molly Mattessich (RPCV Mali '02-'04)
Ron Boring (RPCV Guinea '64-'66)

P.S. You're the key to helping ensure we get good ideas for Africa. Please spread the word by forwarding this email to your friends, fellow RPCVs, and especially your African contacts.
