Hey folks,

Last Monday, Cliff, Peace Corps Chicago Recruiter, hosted an event at
the Rathskeller. There were at least 8 RPCV's and three nominees.
Thanks to all who came, and we hope the nominees gained helpful
information. Thanks to the RPCV's that joined in for their first
interaction with CIRPCA.

VOLUNTEER
Please let me know (include phone contacts) by the end of the day and
sooner if possible if you can volunteer (and not drop out)for this one
time 3 hour shift during Black Expo. Unfortunately, I'm not able to
volunteer this day because I have a meeting the whole day! After
responding you would be notified as to where you would be working.

A free shuttle will take seniors to and from the Black Expo Health
Fair on its opening night, Thursday, July 19.
NEEDED: two volunteers at each of the five churches that will serve as
pick-up and drop-off points.
TIME: The volunteers should be at the churches from 3-6pm while the
shuttle is running its pick-up route. Volunteer responsibilities will
be to (1) pass out tickets and bags to passengers and (2) to make sure
things are running as smoothly as possible.

Cheers, Debbie

We have a slide projector with two cases available for anyone who is interested.  It is a Bell and Howell, with a wired remote and has the rectangular cases.    Free.  I didn’t check it thoroughly, but did turn it on the slides advanced and the fan operates.   First come first served.

I know this is last minute but this is the first information I have
received regarding this Ukraine reunion. Even if you can't go, then
log onto their site and bookmark it. Cheers, Debbie

Wow - the Friends of Ukraine (NPCA affiliate group) reunion is coming
up fast - Portland Reunion, August 10 12!

Any of you guys planning to attend? This event is open to ALL
"veterans" of Peace Corps Ukraine so start packing!

What fun to hang out with RPCVs who served in Ukraine and just share
stories, and make new friends! You can eat Ukrainian food, speak the
language again and even wear your souvenir Ukrainian shirt while you
make toasts with Ukrainian "water" and sing Ukrainian folk songs!
Of course it is not just a social occasion - Friends of Ukraine is
also having annual elections too.

Even if you have not joined Friends of Ukraine officially, you may be
interested in serving...don't be shy! The group needs motivated
leaders to step forward and move the organization forward. Consider
nominating yourself (or someone else) for one of the positions! (You
need NOT be present to win!)

In fact, if you cannot make it to the conference, you can still join
in! There will be a conference call The annual meeting will be
conducted via a conference call scheduled for 1:30 PM PDT (4:30 PM
EDT) on Saturday, August 11th. Thanks to technology we can all
participate!

More info on all these activities: http://co.net/friends

Come be a part of it all! Yep, if you act NOW, there is still time to
snag a cheap flight to Portland! (Pssst: Spread the word!)

Hello.
I had the pleasure of staying with two Peace Corps volunteers from Indiana and
photographing their work. Jerry Wagner and Shazia Davis were gracious hosts and
subjects
for me
as I begin work on a personal project to do photo story of Peace Corps
volunteers around the
world.
Shazia lives in a isolated village on the Caribbean coast in Panama called
Palenque.
Jerry lives in a rural village called Lucky Strike in Belize. Last I heard he
and the rest of the
Belize volunteers were consolidated in the capital city of Belmopan as a result
of the
hurricane. I am sure that he and the rest of the volunteers are okay and have
their work cut
out for them as relief work begins.
I have posted just a small sample of the photos I took of Jerry and Shazia.
I hope to go back to Belize next week to take more pictures of Jerry to document
this new
aspect of his service, dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane.
All in all, Jerry and Shazia are excellent volunteers. I was very impressed with
their work and
how they both have become integretated members of their communities. They are to
be
commended.

I am working on a project with PROVOCATE designing a "map" showing
where PCVs from Indiana Served and which countries these PCVs visited
during their service and after service. The product will be a visual
aid showing how Peace Corps may have aided in exploring other countries.

No names/dates will be used on this project. I will just be
highlighting countries on a map.

If you could email me at barticagyal@... your country served and

I'm signed up for this list but have been more of a reader then a doer (there, I outed myself!), however I think I have something worth mentioning to this group. I'm working with Global Gifts, the fair trade nonprofit store that's on Mass. Please come or spread the word to interested colleagues. (I've posted the details below).

Please see the below message from Lisa regarding an organization called RESULTS. Thanks, Debbie

Dear Colleagues,

I sent CIRPCV a letter prior to Thanksgiving, but it just got returned to me as undeliverable.  So I thought I'd try this route!

I'm writing to you about RESULTS.  RESULTS is a grassroots citizens advocacy group committed to creating the political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty, and we are reinvigorating our presence in the Indianapolis area.  I believe what we have to offer may be of falue to CIRPCV.  Yesterday, I presented RESULTS to a group in Cincinnati that included returned volunteers, thanks to the suggestion of my colleague Ken Patterson who is a returned volunteer living in the Carolinas.  And so this brings me to writing you.  And just as RESULTS may have something to offer your group, we would be enriched by the assets that your circle woulr bring.

To that end, I would like to extend an invitation to our upcoming meeting, a meeting that will re-start our Indianapolis group focusing on global hunger/poverty.  The meeting will be held on Monday, December 17th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Old Bethel United Methodist Church, 7995 E. 21st St.

I had included a brochure on RESULTS in my original mailing, but I will simply refer you to our website -- www.results.org -- for the most up-to-date information about who we are.  I would appreciate knowing if I could speak further with anyone in your organization about this invitation; please know that you are warmly welcome to come and simply hear who we are, giving it your consideration with no commitments assumed.

Thank you so much for your time and all that you do.  And best wishes in this festive season.

Respectfully yours,
Lisa Marchal

Spend a week (or a month or two) this spring or summer helping young people discover how to make a difference in the world!  The Civic Education Project (CEP), a leadership and citizenship program at Northwestern University, is NOW HIRING exceptional staff for our Spring & Summer 2008 service-learning programs.  Learn more.

Spring & Summer Programs
CEP offers weeklong field study programs for 9th-12th graders during the academic year, and intensive, three-week service-learning courses for 7th-12th graders during the summer.  CEP programs explore complex social issues through academic study, meaningful service work, and meetings with community leaders, and help teach young people how to apply their skills and abilities to pressing social issues in their own communities.  This year, CEP will offer programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington DC, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco, covering a wide variety of topics, including poverty, homelessness, education, public health, law, politics, leadership, and social change.  Learn more.

Job Opportunities
We are looking for outstanding teachers from public and private schools and universities, service-learning practitioners, other education, youth development and nonprofit professionals, and graduate and undergraduate students.  Instructional, residential, and administrative positions are available, ranging from one-week to eight-week sessions in the spring or summer.  Staff generally receive a cash stipend, room and board, and training in service-learning and experiential education.  However, the biggest payoff comes from the opportunity to work with bright, motivated students, build community with passionate, dynamic colleagues, and gain valuable experience educating young people about civic engagement and social responsibility.  Learn more.

How To Apply
To learn more about CEP programs and staff positions or to apply online, visit our website at: http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/cep/jobs

Apply Now!  Spring staff consideration has just begun, and summer staff consideration begins February 15, 2008.  Applications are accepted at any time, but are reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received, so candidates are encouraged to apply early to ensure full consideration.

You can be part of creating "eye-opening", "mind-blowing", "life-changing" experiences for young student leaders.

Unite For Sight Volunteer Abroad Opportunities: As Featured Weekly On CNN International and Recently in NY Times

Volunteer Abroad in Summer, Fall, Winter, or Spring: http://www.uniteforsight.org/intl_volunteer

WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF VOLUNTEERS LIKE YOU, UNITE FOR SIGHT RESTORED SIGHT TO 10,062 PATIENTS AND PROVIDED EYE CARE TO 300,000 IN 2006 AND 2007

How Do I Apply? The application as well as complete details about Unite For Sight's international opportunities are available at http://www.uniteforsight.org/intl_volunteer/

Who Is Eligible To Volunteer Abroad?: Volunteers are 18 years and older, and there is no upper age limit. Volunteers range from undergraduate/college students to medical and optometry students, public health students and professionals, business students, filmmakers and photographers, nurses and nursing students, physician's assistants, teachers and educators, opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists.

What is Unite For Sight's Mission? Unite For Sight is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness.

Unite For Sight's work to prevent blindness and restore sight is featured weekly on CNN INTERNATIONAL from September 2007-August 2008.

What Do Volunteers Do?: Volunteers receive hands-on clinical experience while assisting doctors in remote, rural villages. Volunteers learn about international health and eye care, learn clinical skills while working with patients and doctors, and, in one program location, have an opportunity to practice cataract surgery on a goat's eye.

The goal of Unite For Sight and its partner eye clinics and communities is to create eye disease-free communities. Unite For Sight’s volunteers (local and visiting) work with partner eye clinics to provide eye care in communities without previous access. The eye clinic’s eye doctors and Unite For Sight volunteers jointly provide community-based screening programs in rural villages. The clinic’s eye doctors diagnose and treat eye disease in the field, and surgical patients are brought to the eye clinic for surgery. Patients receive free surgery funded by Unite For Sight so that no patient remains blind due to lack of funds. Volunteers immediately see the joy on patients' faces when their sight is restored after years of blindness. These memories last a lifetime.

While helping the community, volunteers are in a position to witness and draw their own conclusions about the failures and inequities of global health systems. It broadens their view of what works, and what role they can have to insure a health system that works for everyone and that leaves no person blind in the future.

What Do Volunteers Say?:

“During my volunteering experience, I realized that Unite for Sight’s service is a campaign for the salvation of humanity that allows the light of compassion to shine through each of us. I believe it is this display of altruism and commitment that makes the organization’s service so virtuous and treasured by both volunteers and patients. After all, making a difference in the world is not so difficult if only one would care enough to sacrifice a part of oneself in order to change the world for the better. My experience as a Unite for Sight volunteer has inspired me to dedicate my future career to serving underprivileged communities around the world.”—Chiwing “Jessica” Qu, Yale University Undergraduate Student, Unite For Sight Volunteer in Chennai, India

"I can honestly say that everything I learned in 3 years of medical school paled in comparison to the 3 week experience I had in Accra (Ghana) in October 2007 as part of Unite For Sight. The program provides volunteers with a unique and hands-on involvement – being able to help out to the level of your training and comfort. My experience taught me that Ghanaian people are the friendliest people I have interacted with anywhere in the world, that ordinary people involved with Unite For Sight are making extraordinary differences, and that sitting in a classroom receiving a world-class education cannot match real life experiences while volunteering."--Varun Verma, UMDNJ Medical Student, Unite For Sight Volunteer in Accra, Ghana

"While in Ghana, I worked with an ophthalmologist (Dr. James Clarke), two eye nurses (Robert Dolo, Kartee Karloweah), an assistant (Bismark Boryor), and a coordinator (Seth). Working with the Unite for Sight team on these outreaches in service to these wonderful people of Ghana was the single most rewarding work I've done in my life. The people of Ghana are some of the friendliest and most thankful of anyone I have ever met. Overall, the experience has changed the way I view the world, my own country, and my role in the world forever. The only way to understand the way 4/5 of the world lives is to go yourself and get involved. The staff I worked with that are the heart and soul of Unite for Sight in Accra were some of the brightest and hard working individuals I have ever met. They are accomplishing feats few ever accomplish in their lives, and I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with them and now call them my friends. I look forward to future work with Unite for Sight as an Ophthalmologist. The task at hand in Ghana, and I'm sure in all of Unite for Sight's locations throughout the world, is enormous. The more people that get involved, the more accessible services will be to these wonderful people. Plain and simple, the more we help, the more people can see the world they live in!”—Brian Fowler, Medical Student at University of Virginia, Unite For Sight Volunteer in Accra, Ghana

Hundreds of volunteer narratives, volunteer diaries, as well as videos of alumni volunteers and partner eye doctors are available on the Unite For Sight website: http://www.uniteforsight.org/intl_volunteer
