He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years Barbara Mae Lovell Moore formerly of Norwich, CT, son Richard Bruce Moore and daughter-in-law Kathleen O’Donnell of Middletown, RI, daughter Barbara Beth Moore of New York City, NY and his son Hugh Aubert Moore and daughter-in-law Katherine Plautz Moore of Barrington, RI. He was the grandfather of Peony, Katie, Beth, Neil and Sean. He is also survived by his sisters, Leah of Galesburg, IL and Julia of Buffalo, NY.

CDR Moore was born in Chocowinity, NC on 1 July 1921, the son of Herman A. Moore of Chocowinity, NC and Iola Bruce Buck of Grantsboro, NC. He attended school in Raleigh, NC, graduating from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1940 and was a 1978 graduate of University of RI.

He enlisted in the US Navy on September 26, 1940 in Raleigh, NC and served more than 30 years. He was aboard the USS Pelias, a sub tender, at Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, 1941. He volunteered for submarine duty and was aboard the USS Trout (SS-202) during the Battle of Midway. He later witnessed the Japanese surrender proceedings in Tokyo Bay September 1945 through a telescope from the signal bridge of the USS Highlands.

In 1949 CDR Moore served at the Navy Reserve Officer Training Unit at Tufts College as an Associate Professor. In 1953 he was assigned to USS Remy (DD688). While serving aboard USS Remy, he participated in the Korean War delivering gunfire support.

CDR Moore received his commission in August of 1954. He was promoted to Ensign in August 1954 and assigned to USS Yosemite (Ad16). During his service aboard, he was assigned duties as Navigator, First LT and Gunnery Officer. In 1956 he was assigned to USS Malloy (EDE1098) and again assigned duties as Navigator, First LT and Gunnery Officer and was promoted to Lieutenant JG.

In 1958 CDR Moore was assigned to The Fleet Training Group at Guantanamo, Bay, Cuba where his was assigned to the Operations Department as the Assistant Operations Officer. During that tour he was promoted to LT.

In his next tour (1960-1963) at The Officer Candidate School in Newport, CDR Moore served as the Assistant Academic director and was promoted to LT CDR. He was assigned to USS Luiseno (AFT156) in 1963 as the Commanding Officer and in 1966 was assigned to a second tour at The Officer Candidate School in Newport. He served as the Director of the Training Craft Division. In 1967, now-CDR, Moore volunteered to serve in Vietnam and served in Chu Lai and Da Nang from 1967 to 1968.

His final tour was as the 54th commanding officer of the USS Constitution in Charlestown, MA.

He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for his service in Vietnam. In addition to the Bronze Star, he had earned two Presidential Unit Citations, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 15 Battle stars, The Submarine Combat Patrol Pin, The Navy Unit Commendation Medal, The American Theatre Medal, The American Defense Medal, The Philippine Liberation Medal, The Navy Occupation Medal, The World War II Victory Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The United Nation Service Medal.

After retiring from the Navy, Hugh embarked on a few new careers: Teaching mathematics to 5th graders at The New School in Middletown, RI and mathematics plus computer sciences to the upper classes. He Captained the Sloop Providence, a “small” tall ship. In his leisure time he commanded the racer-cruiser “Blue Fox”, with his First Mate, Barbara. He served on the Race Committee for the New York Yacht Club for many years, including the 2009 Six Metre World Cup last week. In addition to his membership in the NYYC, CDR Moore was a member of Sail Newport, Coasters Harbor Navy Yacht Club, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the US Navy Memorial Foundation, and the USS Pelias Association, WWII Submarine Veterans, and the USS Highlands Association.

In 1995 Hugh and Barbara, and other Pearl Harbor survivors, were White House guests in Hawaii to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Peace Treaty with the Japanese.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lucy’s Hearth, 913 West Main Road in Middletown, RI. 02842.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 18, 2009, 10 a.m. at Saint Columba’s Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Avenue in Middletown, RI.

Just as Mike & Cheryl warned of the hazards around the old B dock, I wanted to
add a couple of items:

1. Along the line of buoys (red nuns at either end, red ball, white
ball in the middle and off-center)which flank the channel alongside
A/B/C docks----you will find a shallow spot very close between the
red & white balls....and just inside their line by approx. 5 ft.
Just to let you know that, at low tide, there is very little buffer
zone, ie. don't go there! Also, there can be strong current there.

2. Also, at low tide there is a shallow spot between the small square
wooden float and the sportfisherman "Fishing Off" Again, avoid!

Hi All
"New" in as much as I just got a slip (A25)a few weeks ago, "old" as in crusty
old retired USAF fighter pilot, and used to have a boat on B dock 30 yrs ago
(anybody else remember when you could actually drive down the pier?)
I just failed in a search, but I thought there was a msg about group discounts
re: winter storage for club members at a yard...up in Warwick?
Even if not, please respond with your suggestions. Up north in the bay actually
a benefit, as home is in VT, 250 miles from NPT.
GREAT to be back in my native RI (working on re-acquiring the accent.)
Please stop by for a soooooothing libation, prepared to tell lies aboout
boats.....and/or planes....which, by the way, were made to fly, not float.

To our 2009 Series Racers,

The Jamestown Yacht Club Race Committee would like to notify you of an incident that occurred during last Tuesday's race (7/11/09), where a racer was sailing too closely to a commercial vessel in the channel and may have prevented their ability to maneuver, as well as causing injury to the racing crew. The JYC Race Committee protested the racer involved, who has subsquently elected to RAF due to not following the rules.

While the Race Committee may postpone a race in order to let a vessel clear the area prior to any starting sequence, this is not always possible. Each racer is required to steer clear of these vessels at whatever point they come through the channel during a race. For reasons of boating/personal safety, JYC racers will be protested for this and other appropriate action taken if the behavior persists.

Additionally, please note that for those reasons of boating/personal safety, the Jamestown Yacht Club can be sanctioned by the US Coast Guard regarding this incident and not be allowed to conduct racing events. We, therefore, take this very seriously and would encourage all of our racers to do so as well.

Per the COLREGs 9(b), 9(d), 16 and 18(b), US SAILING's The Racing Rules Of Sailing for 2009-2012 Part 1 Fundamental Rule 3 and Part 2 Preamble, and the Jamestown Yacht Club 2009 Race Circular, Sailing Instructions Para I General Instructions--Right Of Way Vessels, boats racing in our series are required to keep clear of vessels with limited maneuverability. Narragansett Bay has been designated a Restricted Channel and sailing vessels do not have right of way over a vessel under power which may be restricted in her ability to maneuver.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Rienzo
JYC Fleet Captain/RC Chairperson

A 12 METRE CLASS REUNION – SPREAD THE WORD

Twenty-one 12 Metres are coming to race at the World Championships on September 23-27 and the world will be watching. Why? This will be the largest gathering in Newport, RI of these classic boats ever…even more than the 1983 America’s Cup. This is the highlight of the Golden Year of Racing, a yearlong calendar of racing and events celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the famous 12 Metre Class yachts participating in the America’s Cup.

  • In addition to four America’s Cup winners and many Defenders racing, the regatta has several other big features: For a once in a lifetime experience, all 12 Metre Worlds Sponsorship levels starting at $2000 include the benefit of being the 17th Crew†observer for a day on a racing 12 Metre during the Worlds. This comes with an exclusive Atlantis vest and drink tickets!
  • America’s Ambassador of Sailing, Gary Jobson will capture the event with a documentary of the regatta for ESPN Classics with DVDs available at a later date.
  • The Regatta Store is already online with a wide variety of Atlantis WeatherGear and Island Outfitter items with the 12 Metre Worlds logo.
  • Luigi Lang and Dyer Jones’ The 12 Metre Class: The History of the International 12 Metre Class From the First International Rule to the America’s Cup book will be updated and for sale during the regatta in the 12 Metre Worlds Village at Bowen’s Wharf. The editing of the new edition was assisted by Jan Slee, 12 Metre Class President.
  • There will be four Legend Forums where 12 Metre stars from the past will participate in a moderated Forum. The Legends will include skippers, tacticians, crew, yacht designers and more.  Three Forums to be held after racing at the 12 Metre Worlds Village (open to the public) and the finale at Goat Island’s Belle Mer preceding the Final Awards Ceremony.
  • On Saturday night, America’s Cup memories will be flowing at the Gala Dinner hosted at New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. Tickets will be for sale for this event.

For information on who is coming, the Regatta Store, the Schedule of Activities, etc., just visit the website at www.goldenyear2009.com.

Sail fast, join the party and come to the 12 Metre Worlds. And if you can think of other sailors who would be interested in attending the regatta, buying a regatta shirt online or becoming a “17th Crew†observer… please forward this E-mail to them. 12 Metres… still elegant, still racing!
