If you are getting too many emails since you signed up for the yahoo
group, just go into your member profile (see "Members" in the left
pane), and change your "Email delivery" from "individual emails" to
"daily digest."

That will ensure that you get one email a day from the group with all
the emails sent that day in it.

Thanks!

Hello Gailynne,

I want to make sure that I actually know the answer to your question
before I pop out any answers, so I've sent an email of inquiry. Just
to make sure that I have the facts straight, are you asking for your
self, or is it just a general question?

Thanks!

Last Sunday, a group of enthusiasts met at Phillipe Restaurant in downtown
L.A. to start our turn-of-the-last-century tour at a 1908 lunch
counter. The hand-carved lamb dip was tasty, but the boysenberry pie
was just right with a crust that was mildly salty to balance the
summer berry sweetness of the filling. I wish I had tried the cole slaw!

We were tempted to detour to nearby Union Station, but we didn't have
enough time before we were due at the "Aesthetes, Bohemians &
Craftsmen: Artistic Dress, 1880s - 1920s" exhibit at FIDM.
It's convenient that FIDM's trying out being open on Sundays. I hope
it works, because it doubles my days to get there. The parking lot
wasn't open, but there was plenty of free street parking.

The exhibit was slightly smaller than usual and a little dark, but
with the aid of a flashlight, we were able to see even the backs of
most items. There were several Fortuny-designed gowns on display, as
the Bohemians were partial to loose fitting, Greek-inspired costume.
One of my favorite items was a 1885 dressing gown made from a
beautifully-embroidered kimono that you can see on FIDM's website.

Our next stop was the Gamble
House in Pasadena, the finest example of Greene & Greene craftsman
architecture in existence, which was populated with mannequins
representing the Gamble family in 1908 for the "Fashionable Dress in
an Artistic Landmark" exhibit. My favorite of the outfits, supplied by
FIDM, was the motoring outfit in one of the upstairs bedrooms.

After wandering the grounds of the Gamble House, we finished off the
day with ice cream at the Fair Oaks
Pharmacy, a South Pasadena soda fountain, circa 1913. Note: the
lunch service is awful, but it's worth it for an ice cream.

While the clothing part of the Gamble House exhibit is finished today,
the house itself is not to be missed. The FIDM exhibit continues until
July 2.

Most costumers I know, including myself, have a tremendous hoard of
fabric, trims, notions and sewing implements that are taking up a
tremendous amount of space. You know who you are. I know who I am.

So, maybe a couple years ago you were going to use that gold velvet/
black watch tartan/ hemp-organic cotton blend to make a [fill in the
blank] but you (a) changed direction, (b) lost interest, (c) lost
your mind, (d) lost your storage space, and you think you'd like to
give your costuming materials a good home, but... Maybe you'd like to
trade for some green velvet/ corset bones/ sanity. Maybe you'd just
like to sell it for a reasonable price, less than what you paid but
more than trying to offload it at a garage sale. It is difficult to
find the right audience or market for the stuff of dreams and
creation; the appeal is really for a specific, narrowly defined
audience.

There may already be organized fabric-whatever-swaps taking place
among the costumerati, and I just never thought to pay attention
before. Are there? This could be going on all the time. Or maybe, at
some opportune moment, you/me/we could put one together.

It's one of those things that requires the maximum number of people
for success. So just designating a specific weekend may not bring the
most participants. I briefly considered Costume College, but that
would mean getting a space at the hotel for a big get-together on a
logistically crazy weekend. And a lot of people traveling with enough
luggage as it is would now be adding three or four storage bins to
their burden. That may be ridiculous.

Any thoughts?? I'd appreciate your input.

CGW has been having a garage sale the last couple of years. Would that
fit the bill? This year it was in March. Our members made over $1200.
If you can hold out until next March or April, we'll do it again!

Sounds a lot like the fabulous CGW Beggar's Bazaar we had back in March. I really enjoyed the event, although I'm curious how all the sellers did since it didn't seem that busy when I was there. I would hope we could turn this into a more regular event. I was thinking early October might be a good time for a second try since we might be able to lure in outsiders looking for Halloween costume/accessories.

The Western Costuming yard sale (which, imho, had a lot more, but lesser quality stuff than ours) was totally mobbed. Maybe we just need to work on advertising!

Ingrid, are you thinking of a "Fabric Swap Bonanza", or did you just have some
fabric you
want to get off your hands? I agree that the Guild Garage Sale is a good one,
but I never
have enough to bother to sell there (just make purchases!!) Consequently, I
have been
taking my "no-longer-loved" costuming bits to Costume College and donating them
to
the- what is it called?- Exotic Emporium of Fabulous Finds(?), which I believe
is raising
money for Scholarships and such. ( I understand this option is not so easy for
those
traveling from a distance, especially when airlines are charging so much per
piece of
luggage!)Sure, it's a donation, not a sale, but I do gain my sanity and storage
space. Plus, I
may see something I discarded looking quite fantastic on someone at Co Co!

So, who is interested, where are you, and how far would you be willing to
drive?

I'll start- I'd be interested, I'm in Fullerton, and I'd drive towards
Huntington Beach, Brea
or maybe Irvine if the time was right. Not such a fan of heading north/ towards
LA unless I
am on the way to Farthingales or Whimsic Alley :O) I've got two boxes of fabric
and a few
finished pieces I no longer love.

Your turn!

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday. I hope this note finds you well.
Every family experiences milestones. They include the birth of a child,
a college graduation, a job promotion, and a host of other important events.

We have always thought of our customers as members of the Fabric.com
family and so it is appropriate that we share with you a major milestone
in our company's history. We are pleased to announce that Fabric.com has
been purchased by Amazon.com, a global online retailer. We believe this
milestone reflects our history of success in serving you, our customers,
and that makes us very proud.

Allow me to share with you what the acquisition by Amazon means and,
equally important, what it does not mean. What it does mean is that we
will now have the resources to expand our inventory, and to more
completely meet your needs. Over the next 12 months, we expect to
increase the number of products we carry, and we will look to you for
your thoughts on what that expanded inventory selection should include.
It also means that we will have access to the best in customer service
and order fulfillment technology, all to better serve you.

What the acquisition does NOT mean is a change in the people, the
philosophy, or the business practices at Fabric.com. Your favorite
products will still be available at www.fabric.com and our team and I
will be here to serve you. Our overriding commitment to customer service
will not change and the warm and friendly, family-oriented environment
that we have created together, will not change.

I personally want to thank you for all of the friendship and support you
have shown us over the years. All of us at Fabric.com look forward to
serving you and the entire sewing community for many years to come.

Warmest personal regards, Stephen

of lovely polished-cotton space-themed fabrics, made & worn by
Christine Becker at the International Space Development Conference
that I attended in Washington, D.C., at the end of May. I admired it
and started chatting with Christine, just moments before Buzz Aldrin
wandered by & did the same. He asked for a photo, which Christine
asked me to take for her, with him. My "cut" was a copy of the pic,
which I'm delighted to share with you all. She is a talented &

Hi, everyone,

I'm trying to decide about a Regency corset. When looking at the size
chart on the pattern, because of my bust measurement is 47, I need a
size 18, the waist is a size 18 but the hips are a size 12. The only
reason I'm looking at a Regency corset is because I did the bit with
no support and I'm just not comfortable that way. The second line in
the instruction sheet says: "A fashionable silhouette cannot be
achieved if the bounce remains when the dancing stops." And let me
tell you, the bounce remains whether I'm dancing or walking. I'm
thinking maybe I should do a corseted chemise i.e., make a long corset
bust area stopping right below my ribs and then attach a chemise
petticoat to the bottom of it.

Suggestions?

I suggest going to the GBACG "Great Pattern Review" with whatever pattern you
choose
and seeing what people say about it.

For the Mantua Maker pattern (which is the only one I have tried myself,) there
are three
reviews and 2 out of the 3 commented that it runs small (from what the
measurement
chart says). I also found that to be true. If only I had known that before my
FIRST mock-
up (which I cut out at a 20 because that's what the chart says...)

According to the chart, my bust and hips would be a size 20. Knowing that it ran
small, I
cut out the 24 and YES, it was too loose in some places, but much easier to
take in than
to re-cut the whole thing! After three mock-ups, I finally found the right
fit. With a gap
in the back, I ended up with 46.5"/ 43"/ 49", which is actually rather
comfortable except
at the waist, where I am taking in 5 inches and they do not appreciate it...

The point on the pattern where I had to do the most fiddling was at the bust
cups. The
lower point where the bust cup gussets ended (at the underbust) was nowhere near
where
it should be, and the bust cup gussets were hopelessly small (I ended up using
the HIP
gussets in their place). I also had issues with the straps, but i imagine if I
wanted to do
another mock-up, I could have better addressed that issue as well. Instead, I
lopped them
off, since they weren't actually doing much but hanging there. The support was
coming
from the cups- YAY!

If you are local to me (Fullerton), or really enjoy driving, I have the two
different sizes that
you could try on to see how close they come. Then I could show you the pattern
alterations I made. Might save you a mock-up or two? (Anyone can) E-mail me off
list if
they're interested.

Also, there are short stays patterns out in the world, but I am a DDD and I
found them to
be rather pointless.

Hope that was helpful to someone out there!
-Elizabeth

(Sorry for the cross post.)

My friend purchased a non-member membership to Costume College (at $95) and now finds she can't attend. Since she's out of email connection today, I promised I'd send a message to you all to see if anyone is interested in taking over her membership. If you're interested, please contact her directly at pinkdepforddoll@... and mention Costume College membership in your subject line.

Thanks,
LynnD

Hi, I recall seeing somewhere that we can donate items for a raffle or
a give away of some sort at CC? I have a few things I would like to
donate...How do I do that?

Hi, Trystan,

I'm sorry to hear your friend will not be able to join us at College this year. We will look forward to seeing her soon, perhaps next year.

I'm chiming in here to let everyone know that the deadline for official sales and transfers was 6/22/08. This is so we can get full counts to the hotel for the number for meals we'll need for the Gala and Tea and so we can get the name badges printed up, laminated and the envelopes stuffed with everyone's tickets. This is a big enough task without having to make changes up to the last minute on late transfers. This is not to say that you cannot still make the transfer/sale. I just want to let you know to tell the person purchasing the membership to ask for it under the original name. (I'll see if we can't make some provision for a correction to the name badge.)

Thanks for understanding. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Hi, Tonya,

Thank you for your generosity. The person to contact for this would be Pat Kopp, our Raffle/Bargain Basement Department Head. I believe her email is - pattkopp@... . If that doesn't work (didn't cox go belly up?), may I recommend contacting this year's Dean, Martha Davis. She should have Pat's current info.

Hope this helps,

Annie,

Thanks for making that clear. I sent out a message for my friend's ticket recently too. I believe she's sold it and I'll make certain she has her replacement keep a copy of this email and the transfer papers with her when she arrives at Costume College. I further believe they were going to send notice to the Registrar as soon as the transfer took place but I'll let them know that it might not be official even if they did.
