Hello Costumers!

I am working with the fabulous Jenn Mulvey this year as part of YOUR Costume
College 2011 Programming Department! I am organizing all the teachers and
classes! And we need more!!!

With the new (and also fabulous) hotel, we have more space to fill and not
enough classes to fill it! Please consider giving us a hand and offering to
teach a class!

What can you teach?!?

1. Any skill or technique you're good at! How about a particular tool you're
handy with? You can show it off or put together a small project to walk others
through!
2. Talk about a period or historical subject you're familiar with! Did you do a
lot of research for a recent project? Take an hour to share your knowledge!
3. Did you recently tackle a big project? Share it! Successful or not, we can
all learn from your experiences! Even mistakes!

We need teachers and classes! If you have any questions, ideas or proposals,
please drop me a line either at my personal email OR over at the official
College Teacher's email account: cocoteachers@...!

Please help us make Costume College 2011 better for everyone!

Heather Pritchett
Programming Teacher's Liaison
Costume College 2011

P.S. - The official deadline is THIS Saturday, February 5th, 2011. However, if
you need more time, email me and we'll work something out.

Alas I am not qualified to teach a class at CoCo but I thought I would
add a few thoughts about what I would like to see offered:
I would like to learn how to do that braid making thing called
Kumihumo (sp?) and finger braiding which I think is a pretty medieval
technique and would fit in will with the Gothic theme.
I would like some workshops where you bring projects that you are stuck
on and get help from either folks who know how to sew really well or
folks who know the historical side of things.
A class on fitting the Gothic gown or Cotehardie is always really good
for those who don't have a pattern yet.

There were several classes offered last year that I couldn't get into
that should be repeated, especially some fo the ones for making hats for
any period

I think any class form last year that you had to turn so many folks away
that they could have filled another class should be repeated.

I would like to learn to make netting.

So if any of you possess those skills and can offer them to us please do so.

Beverly

One cure for moths is to put all new dry goods in your freezer for several days
after you bring them home from the store, and then store them in your cupboards
in well-sealed containers. You can also kill any larvae in your present supply
by doing the same. You may have to do all this for several weeks or months
until you effectively kill off most or all the ones that inhabit your house at
the moment.

This is also helpful for killing bugs in any feathers you bring home, even from feather suppliers but especially vintage feathers. I put them into a plastic bag in the freezer for at least a week to kill off anything living in them before I add them to my stash. (Yes, my husband is very understanding.)

Hi,

This is great advice and I have used it for many years successfully on some feathers.  The only thing I might add is that be careful about ostrich...if you put antique/vintage ostrich feathers in the freezer in a sealed plastic bag, by sure to take them out of the plastic bag immediately after taking them out of the freezer, as they can easily lose their curl from the condensation.  And try as you might, those old frilly curled ostrich can never be brought back to their original curly state.  If your freezer is not cold enough, the curl can still get limp or damp from the freezer, so be aware.

Bugs do not usually eat antique ostrich due to the fact that they have been bleached and dyed and treated with chemicals, but it can happen.  I have never had bug damage on any antique ostrich in 35 years (and do not use the freezer on these), but have had buggies  munch or completely eat other feathers or feathers that have not been chemically processed.

I personally won't put my ostrich in the freezer.  But just watch on the really frilly curly ones.

Regards,  Barbara

It certainly does, but with what type of emphasis?  I'm currently organizing my fabric hoard (it's too large to simply be a stash) and will be cataloguing and streamlining my patterns while out on maternity leave in a couple of months.

NOT volunteering by myself, thank you!  What works for 2 adult costumers, 1 teen wanna-be costumer and a soon-to-be arriving with a large house, is different from an apartment or roommate concept.

Happy 'February!
There will be a Sewing Workshop Saturday, February 26 from 9 am until at least 6 pm. in Nuevo.
Already signed up are Katrina, who will be making a corset, and Paige who "wants my wrapper, now!".
Are you stuck on a project? Or do you have something in mind and don't have the guts or the time to start it?  Get a head start on the reenacting season. Come and sew!

When:  Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 9 AM to 6 PM

Where:  In the Annex room across the street from Nuevo Community Church ,

              29734 Nuevo Road ,     Nuevo , CA 92567 .

Nuevo is 7 minutes East of Perris off the 215 Freeway.

Who:  Please let me know if you would like to participate and

which project you are interested in doing.   Limit is 15 students.

           ShelleyPeters@...

What:  Pack up your sewing machine and put together a dish for lunch

we will have a fun day sewing and chatting.

Of course, a corset is the starting point for any period gown. In the next sessions I will then work with you on your individual project teaching you how to use period techniques to sew beautifully fitted period correct garments.

Here are the projects you can receive individual instruction on:

Corset Workshop $125 for the first day: Sew your own corset; white coutil, cotton twill, and all supplies included. (I recommend this before you attempt to sew a day dress or ball gown)  $15 per day to finish.

Under it All $40: Chemise and drawers or combination underwear for beginning and intermediate sewers.

Bodice Fitting $40: Make a muslin from your favorite day dress or ball gown pattern and have it fitted to your corseted shape (I recommend Truly Victorian).  If this gets completed we will go right into the cutting out process.

Bodice Construction $40 per day: Period techniques taught for a bodice( day or ball gown) to go over a corseted figure including flat lining, hook and eye closure, boning channels, and piping facings. Supplies will be available for sale.

Skirting the Belle $40:  How to make a skirt (day or ball gown) to go over your hoops with period construction techniques and pleating ideas.

The 5 Foot Pinner Apron $40: For beginning to intermediate sewers, learn how to use 5 of your sewing machine feet while constructing a pinner apron

Wrapper $40: This requires 7 yards each of fabric and lining. We will use the Past Pattern #807.

UFO $15 to $40: Come and sew for the day.  Work on your own or get help on your specific project.

Bring a Potluck dish to share, your sewing machine and the project you want to work on. We'll have fun and accomplish some sewing!

Please let me know if you plan to participate and which class you are interested in doing. I can send you a flyer with more information about each workshop. Supplies (patterns, boning, hook & eye tape, etc.) will be available for purchase.

Please do not ask me to be on the panel...... My method is to throw every project in a plastic bin and stack to the ceiling.  Stack along the halls.  Stack in the bedrooms.  Even stack in the bathroom.  Is there one room is my house that is not over-ran by the stash/horde?  Pretty soon there will not be room for me!
At least it is organized by era or project and I think I know where everything is!

So, I think I can help on this. I have had a costume shop for 30 years. Organization is essential! Ready to go, right now. Accessories to wigs must be organized and available. We also have a pattern storage system for 1,000's of patterns. I will send in a teacher form.

I don't know if the teaching deadline has passed but a member asked for a class on how to organize and store costumes, patterns, accessories, shoes etc.

I told her I would pass it on. I am so not qualified to teach this and I have a class anyway...

So....Thanks...

Debbie,

YEA!   As one who has not eaten dinner on my dining table for 2 years due to piles of half restored hats, I would love to attend your class.

Chaz,
Yes, please, continue to announce the deadline.  It helps to remind us all that WE are as responsible for the information in Squeals as is the Editor, and it just might tickle those repressed feelings of guilt that "gee, I really oughta' submit something now and then . . . hey, there's still time this month!"
