Loralee,

You got great close-ups of everyone's costume...except your own! And
I love yours; do you happen to have any close-ups of it? Thanks --

Well thanks!  The only pictures I got this year were group pictures.  I have a few from previous years I will look for and post into the same link.

By the way-  all who have Georgians-  the East Room is a fabulous place to get pictures taken in your attire.  The room is period correct-  and if we are fortunate, we get GOOD LIGHT from the windows.

Why not mark your calendar for next year and plan to come?

Subject: SQUEALS deadline

SQUEALS deadline is tomorrow. Well, actually, it was yesterday, but since I was
so late getting the December issue I'm extending the deadline for the January
issue by a few days.

Also, I wanted to put out an open call for:

1. Articles on how to make or do something -- ideally, something we can print in
one to four pages, maybe with drawings or photos.

2. Ideas for cover photos. I'm looking to tie into current events in some way --
the December issue has a lovely red Victorian dress that Rebecca Rowan made,
which ties in (more or less) with the holiday and Dickens Fairs season. I've got
ideas for the January and February issues, but the March issue is a big question
mark at this point.

3. General help with copy-editing and format conversion. The first stage of
editing the newsletter consists of getting all of the articles into a consistent
format, so I can juggle around what's going where, look for pictures to
illustrate them if they have a lot of white space, and so forth, but it starts
with a step that's simple and easily spread out among a few volunteers willing
to dedicate a few hours in the second week of each month. Can you help, please?

A friend has a fabulous Renn Faire outfit for sale. It is a surcoat &
kirtle, about a size 18, but with larger sleeves. It's blue with sage green trim.
The kirtle is a two-way taffeta in teal and black. The forepart has diamonds of
navy blue and green, with pearls, silver, and light blue facets in patterns
within the diamonds. The effect is stupendous asking $750, which is
approximately half the time, effort, energy, and money put into it. You
costumers know what goes into this! It's a bargain. Message me for more info at
msgoldrush@...
Also some girls' costumes, in the 6-8 size range and short, would be $200-$350,
depending upon which one. The light blue with gold and brown trim would be most
expensive, followed by the darker blue with silver and burgundy trim, and the
least expensive would be the black, wide-wale corduroy, sprinkled all over with
tiny sparkle beads, and with red and gold German-styled sleeves.

Saw an ad for a free issue of this magazine, though someone from CGW or a sister
group might like it. It is a historical needlework magazine. Here is what they
describe themselves as:

Do you love history and needlework? Are you interested in the history behind the
technique, vintage patterns, stories of needleworkers past and present, and
heirloom-quality projects you can make? Then, you need to take a look at
PieceWork.

PieceWork is the only magazine for those who adore historical knitting,
embellished clothing, stunning quilts, and exquisite lacework—all made by hand.
With beautiful photography and well-researched accounts, every issue explores
the life and work of traditional needleworkers, takes an in-depth look at
needlework techniques, and gives you instructions for making heirloom-quality
projects of your own

Link to their site

and they also have loads of other magazines, online magazines and newsletters
for sewing, knitting, quilting, weaving... you name it.

Hope someone can use this!

Here is the knitting one, that will probably send all kinds of offers.

I had a subscription for about 4 years a few years ago. They teach some good techniques and have some interesting articles, some by people on the h-costume list. They are very knitting-heavy and crochet light, lots of embroidery and quilting research. They talk about a piece or style of vintage/antique work and then give a modern variation of the original piece to teach you how to do the process. They expect that you will do further research to reproduce the original style of project. I check the new issues irregularly to see if there's something of interest to me and sometimes buy them that way. Some are very interesting; the last issue had a theme of "What was in Jane Austen's sewing box?"

Subject: seamstress wanted

Hello,

A friend of mine asked if I knew anyone who wants some paid sewing work for a friend of his. Here are the details:

I'm designing uniforms for waitstaff and need to hire a good seamstress - preferably one with retro sensibilities/ costuming experience. Must knock this project out before the new year

So I need a server dress and hostess dress. One of each to start and get signed off on before making more. I have pictures to use as guidelines. We are going for a forties style.

The server dress I have, it's a shift that needs to have the neckline reshaped, cap sleeves added, and mini shoulder pads sewn in- after the prototype is approved, it will also have to be ripped apart to have a pattern made for future reference.

The hostess dress needs to have a pattern made right away from an existing dress and I have a bolt of fabric for the prototype to be made - also needs mini shoulder pads.

I will be out of town from the 23rd thru the 27th - I hardly expect someone will want to work on this over Christmas - but if so that would be stellar. I will pay for the job on the two dresses upon completion and if the owners love them and the work is good we can go ahead and contract for eight more to get started.

Her name is Naomi Schimek. If you're interested, you can send an email to: LAcocktails@...

Thanks!

I need to make some room in my house, so "Biba", my old-school dress form, needs
a new home. (She's named after the lady I bought her from, back when I was
younger and thinner.)

Biba's measurements are as follows:

Bust: 37.5"
Waist: 31"
Hips: 41"
Back-waist length: 14.25"
Height: Adjustable, up to 62" from floor to stump of neck, 38" tall when
collapsed

I've put up a front and side view of Biba here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CGWcostumers/photos/album/1799713501/pic/list

Biba is FREE to a good home. She was used in last year's Costume Gallery, and
I'll be happy to donate her to the Guild, unless someone else speaks up first.

Biba has a couple of quirks that are probably easily fixable. She's a little
off plumb, and the wingnut to adjust her height is prone to slip.

I'd like to find her a home as soon as possible, so please let me know if you're
interested. Best way is to e-mail me at mary dot m dot llewellyn at gmail
and/or coco dot transport at yahoo. Thanks much!

Looking forward to the Costume College next year. I am wondering about the

waiting for my first Squeals issue. Unfortunately, the links to the back issues

Regency Overview and Draping Workshopette  – Sun, Jan 9, 2011

In support of the Jane Austen Evening in Pasadena, Martha Davis has graciously agreed to present a Regency dress draping demonstration similar to an extremely popular lecture she previously gave at Costume College.  Chocolate fondue will be served. (Yum!)

***Tickets, $5 for CGW members/sisters and $10 for nonmembers, will be for sale at the CGW website between December 21 and January 3. Attendance is limited to 18.

Thanks!

I really enjoyed the new movie, True Grit.

However, something really bugged me about it. In an early scene in the movie, we're in a western town sometime in the late 1860s. All the background women are wearing round hoops. Only one of them appeared to own a single petticoat.

We spent quite a while after the movie discussing whether this was an oversight by the costume department or intentional. Could having the bones of the hoop wires show through their skirts really be used as a way to show how old west, tough, and stripped down the town was? Costume Designer Mary Zophres talks about dedication to historical research in a couple of online interviews.

Any thoughts?

Not exactly an answer to your question but i recall reading a civil war diary by
an upper crust New Orleans plantation owner's daughter. When she fled to Texas
she wrote scathingly about how garish she thought all the women there as they
were wearing huge hoops, bonnets with lots of big flowers on them and BARE FEET
-- to church!

Cheers,

Loren

ha, ha.  I had the same gripe.  I could believe they would have the big of a budget and no one would be wearing petticoats.  Otherwise, loved the movie.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who had the same questions, comments, and observations after seeing True Grit! (I was anxious to find out if other costumers had the same observations!) My poor husband hand to listen to me rant about the horrible hoops after the movie. Not only were they lacking petticoats, but a few seemed to be poorly balanced. I had wondered if and why there was such a huge oversight by the costume department, or perhaps the women in Texas really wore their dresses this way? Not to mention, the movie takes place in the mid 1870s. I thought that large hoops like were well out of fashion by that time and women were easily wearing bustles?
