Dear Costumers,

There is a Producer in New York looking for an Historian to help host a series on The History Channel website.  He contacted me through Costume College and I wanted to put the word out in case we have some NY members who might be interested in getting his information.  Here is what he sent to me:

"9/2/08 - My name's Doug Yuan- I'm a producer at The History Channel.  We're producing a series of Halloween web pieces for History.com about historical costumes, and how they're sometimes done right and sometimes done wrong (i.e. Abraham Lincoln, Pilgrims, Napoleon, etc.).  We're looking for a hip, energetic, knowledgeable on-camera host to be our "authority" about costume historical accuracy.   The host needs to have an understanding of historical costumes/fashion.  We're looking to shoot on location in NY sometime in the next week and a half."

Please let me know if you are interested and I will send you his information.  Email me individually at costumecollegedean@... instead of hitting reply please.  Thank you!

Just a thought here, if you are really anxious about getting the form come to the collating and get it in person.  It is a great way to meet other members, help get the newsletter out and put something back into the organization with your participation.  See Squeals for times and the address of the newsletter collation.

RELAX. I went through the same thing. The sentence should be worded, "In September, applications will be mailed out with the October Dispatch," or something like that. Collating is 18 September, which literally means "...mailed with Squeals in September..." If you look on page 29, you'll see a posting for 18 September: "...The issue collated this day will include application forms for Costume College 2009."

You're okay! :D

But did anyone else get their Costume College registration form with
their September Squeals? I didn't.

I just got the Squeals and tore it apart. All of the literature we got
says "[r]egistration forms for Members will be mailed with Squeals in
September 2008." I looked for a message that said that the form would
be coming with the October 2008 Squeals instead, which is probably
more accurate, and makes the process more idiot-proof, since I'm
assuming that means most people will remember NOT to send in their
form before October 20th.

Anyone with rational and soothing words of comfort, please reply.

Hello!

I'm looking for someone who is planning to attend the Jane Austin
weekend on January 17, 2009, who would like to "host" a CGW Meetup.
Since the Bonus Track for Costume College was Regency, it would be
fabulous if we could have a time when our members could meet up and
show off their fabulous creations that they learned to make this year.
Unfortunately, I won't be attending, so I wouldn't be able to do it
myself.

I would also like to hear from anyone who is interested in hosting a
"Finish Your Finery" day in the beginning of January. That way anyone
with unfinished Regency items may be able to get help to finish them
in time for the Jane Austin weekend.

Thanks!
Colleen

Thank you Joyce for the suggestion.  However, if you do intend to collate (which I highly encourage), please be sure to read the instructions to entering in the Lottery.  There is a time allowance that you need to submit the form, NOT BEFORE, and NOT AFTER to qualify.  Please don't come to the collate, help, complete the form and hand it to someone, this will disqualify you!   Just wanted to be clear.

Read the instructions clearly and thoroughly.  They are easy enough to follow! :)

I just read about this upcoming exhibit and thought others may be interested as
well: "The
Purse and the Person: A Century of Women's Purses" will be at the Fullerton
Museum
Center from Oct 18th- Jan 4th.

The blurb on the website says:

"While archeologists may create a picture of an individual from a cache of
artifacts buried
deep in the earth, this exhibition brings together life stories buried right
under our noses
- in the purses carried by our mothers and grandmothers. Developed from a
private
collection of nearly 2,000 handbags, each vignette in this show combines purses
with the
everyday objects that filled them. Glimpse into the lives of Edwardian matrons,
flappers,
wartime Rosie the Riveters, suburban housewives, hippies, businesswomen, and
more.
Historical photographs are used to bring these characters to life. The women of
the 20th
century will reveal their personalities, their fashion sense, and their
day-to-day concerns
brought out in the mysterious depths of their purses."

From Google, I learned the address is 301 N Pomona Ave, Fullerton, CA 92832-
Downtown
Fullerton, very near Fullerton College. Admission is $4 or less, and there is
free parking
nearby. Their hours
are somewhat limited, so check the website.
Here's a link:

I'll definitely go to the exhibit. I've lived in Fullerton for over a year, and
I have never been
to the FMC before (yes, I need to get out more). I don't yet know what the
"scale" of the
place is... Has anyone been who could offer more light on the subject? Is it
terrible, awful
or something? :O)

Anyone think they might want to go?? Maybe have a "CGW Day" if we can all
coordinate?
(I'm volunteering to help/coordinate if there's interest.) I'm sure we can find
other things
to do nearby and make a day of it. (This is Downtown Fullerton). "Gilding the
Lily" is
RIGHT THERE, no? http://gildingthelilyvintage.blogspot.com/ I always pass
interesting
antique shops when I am down thataway. Who's up for an explore!? :O)

Actually, I think I'll drive by today and have a look. See what is nearby. More

This sounds just like the exhibit shown in Pasadena earlier this
year, and the one photo on the Fullerton website reinforces my opinion
that it is. I saw it in March and it is an OUTSTANDING exhibit.
I heartily second the motion that we make it a CGW event, and I
would definitely go to see it again. Can we combine it with either
lunch or tea, as well as strolling around Fullerton shops in attire of
1840-1960 or perhaps just carrying eye-catching handbags?
Hint, hint (Elizabeth) . . . if you schedule it, we will come.

Diane,
I'm glad to hear the good review of the exhibit. I have never been to the museum
here, so
I wasn't sure what I was leading people to!
  ***
I do think it should combine lunch and strolling the downtown shops. There's
also some
interesting architecture in the area (photo ops in period costume?)

As far as which restaurant, I guess I have to do some research as to who could
handle a
large group, if they'll take reservation, if they'll split the check, etc...

Regarding a DATE- I have too much going on until after Halloween and although I
might
do some Christmas shopping while I'm there, I want to keep the event away from
December and everyone being busy with holidays, so it looks like beginning/ mid-
November? I'd better get something written for Squeals!

What a great little event!  But on a Tuesday?  Makes it hard for those of us "out of town" or out of the LA area to make the drive.  A weekend date would be better and probably have more attendees.

But I wish good times for those who can make it.

can build a group. Perhaps carpool? I'm in Fullerton, the event is in Santa Monica.

I cannot cut and paste the details from the Whimsic Alley website (it is an image, not text),
so here is a link. If it doesn't come through, e-mail me off-list and I can forward you the e-
mail I received.

Same here. I'd love to go but on a Tuesday during the day??

Anyone interested in a mini party for those who cannot make it during the week?

The Harry Potter books have such a wide age-range of fans that we forget that these books were predominantly written for children. Scholastic Books is a publisher specializing in children's books. Having said that, it makes perfect sense to me that the party would be in the afternoon-early evening. When else would an audience, whose bed time is 9pm Sharp on a school night, get to attend?

I read the first book because my 11 year old daughter loved it and started to read it to her 6 year old sister immediately after she finished it (the first time). They kept arguing about taking turns reading, so I stepped in and the three of us read it out loud to each other. By the end of the book we were all hooked...

I like an excuse for a Harry Potter Party... If someone throws it, I'm there! I
don't have the
space to host one myself (one bedroom apartment), so I will probably be at
Whimsic Alley
since I am fairly local and unemployed. Now I just have to decide if I am OK
with pulling
my kid out of school early for a... "dentist appointment"??? :O)

Subject: Paying gig for Victorian extras on Halloween

I was contacted by Susan Anderson of www.susanandersonphoto.com. She
is coordinating events for a fancy Halloween fundraiser in Beverly
Hills. It sounds like fun, and her photography is really good. I would
sign up, but I've already committed to another Halloween Haunt.

Here's the info, for anyone interested:

It is a private party with a Victorian era "Haunted" Train Station
theme, to be performed only once, on Friday October 31st.

The Train Station is basically a 10.000 sq ft home that will be
transformed for one evening into a Haunted House for the party guests
to experience. We are expecting up to 1000+ guests at this party.

What we are hoping to find are some extras and featured characters for
our Haunted Train Station who can portray Victorian era characters.
The more authentic the costume, the better.

We are looking for the following characters:

Victorian ladies

Victorian Gents

Victorian "Gangs of New York" style Pick Pockets.. Street Gang types
(think the film, Oliver)

Keystone Kop characters (I know that is more teens or twenties, but we
are stretching it a bit)

Ticket takers for a Victorian Train station

Train Robbers

These characters will be hired to populate the street in front of the
Haunted House to lend a
note of authenticity to our event. Some will have more specific
roles, others might be ghoulish
Victorians, etc etc.

These positions are paid, depending on the level of difficulty, the
price for the event differs.

Not unlike being an extra for a TV show or a film. The rate for
talent is from $150 and up...

There will be food and refreshments provided, and a great place to
spend Halloween.

We have other roles available too for anyone who might have more
acting experience.

English accents are more than welcome!!

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Here's a request / opportunity I was sent.

Workshop in the Woods originated as part of the Living History aspect of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in the old days in Agoura.  It made the transfer to Devore but had to splinter off when the Faire went corporate.  Originally, students were brought to the faire site to learn about life in Elizabethan Days while surrounded by as close a context as we were able to create.  Presenters are required to dress appropriately for the time they are portraying.  This can be a really great opportunity to reach a spectrum of kids and get them interested in not only costumes but history as well.  In the last years of Workshops at Devore, I had the opportunity to teach embroidery and basket-weaving to students from home schoolers and kindergarten through jr. high / high school, including some kids that were probably gang members.

If / when you email Terri, be sure to include "Workshop in the Woods" in the subject/re: line.  She won't know your email address and you don't want to get accidentally deleted as spam.

Thanks for your time and attention.

Annie Mitschek

Workshop in the Woods is a California non-profit organization specializing in first person education, primarily English Elizabethan daily life.  We offer not only in school programs but also out of classroom immersion experiences consisting of classes in Renaissance crafts, activities and information.

We are looking for people to teach subjects in all areas of Elizabethan daily life in Southern California for the 2009 spring season. If you have, or know anyone who does have expertise in any Elizabethan craft, activity or area of historic daily life we want to hear from you.  Presenters are compensated and material costs for classes are covered.

Our programs are generally while schools are in session which means weekdays.  Even if you are only available one or two days for teaching during the season, we can use your talents!

Please have all interested parties contact:

We will be delighted to hear from you and give you any additional information you request.

We look forward to hearing from you!

My fellow Costumers,

Sorry to use bandwidth but this is the fastest way to reach the greatest number. I am writing to let you know that once again I have registered for AIDS Walk Los Angeles. As you know, this is a very important issue to me so I have set an ambitious fundraising goal of $1,000.00. Last year, with help from friends such as you, I raised a little over half that amount. I want to do as much as I can to make a difference in the lives of men, women, and children affected by HIV and AIDS. Even though there has been a lot of publicity about drug treatments which are prolonging some people's lives, they don't work for everyone and there is still no cure in sight. Moreover, young people are still getting infected at alarmingly high rates.

If you have sponsored me in the past, I thank you with my whole heart. If you can do so again, immeasurable thanks to you. If you can't, I totally understand. I know it is difficult, in these troubled financial times, to consider donating, but every amount, no matter how small, adds up to help for someone who really needs it. Please, make a positive statement to the world!!!

That's why I'm asking for your help. Will you please sponsor me for the AIDS Walk? Just click on the website address below to enter my personalized web page and charge your donation. Thank you, in advance, for supporting this important cause and for showing that you join me in wanting to end this epidemic.

Always, Annie Mitschek

Hello all! I am working on an 1890s skirt and the pattern calls for
4" deep directionally (1/2") pleated trim at the hem. However, I have
made this before and I don't want another skirt that looks the same.
:-) So, I was thinking of making the pleated trim in box pleats. I
was wondering if anyone knows if the box pleats will take up more
fabric than directional pleats? I just want to be sure to cut the
correct amount of fabric and not have a seam in the pleats if possible.

Thanks a lot for any input!

Even knife pleats (directional pleats) and even box pleats require the same amount of fabric which is 3 times more than the length of your needed finished trim.

Love pleating!

Dear Annie--
This is coming to you from Dordrecht, Netherlands, whre Bill and I are on a bike and barge tour.  I would be happy to send you a donation of $25, but I am leery of doing it from here over the Internet.  I see that the walk is October 19, --we get home Oct 6th, so I will print out a donation form and mail it in about the 8th.  Is that OK?  Will it get to you?  Please reply with your best advice--
Otherwise, eating much cheese and chocolate and beer, and taking in the sights.  I got an idea for a small article for Squeals while looking at a painting about guilds in Antwerp--when I am back on West coast time I will write it up.
Hugs-
Karen
