CALL TO ACTION
Thanks to you, Troy's family, and the tens of thousands of people around the
country who have taken time out of their lives to write a letter, sign a
petition, or attend a demonstration, Troy Davis lives today. When the U.S.
Supreme Court stayed his execution on Sept. 23 until they could decide on
whether to look at the case, it was a recognition that people's eyes were on
this case from around the country and around the world. But now, Troy could face
another execution date very soon, and we need you to spring into action again.

On September 29, the Supreme Court will be meeting to decide whether to hear
Troy's case. No gun, no DNA, no fingerprints, and no physical evidence of any
kind were used to convict him. 7 of the 9 witnesses in his case have recanted
their trial testimony, and several have said they were pressured by police. In
effect, what the Supreme Court justices will be deciding is whether it's okay to
allow the execution of an innocent man if his appeals have expired. We think
this is a no-brainer. If they look at the facts and make the right call, Troy
lives. If they decline to hear the case, Troy could be executed that night, or
the day after, or in the weeks to come, if Georgia sets a new execution date.

But the Supreme Court Justices aren't the only ones with a decision to make.
Thurbert Baker, the Attorney General of Georgia, and Spencer Lawton, District
Attorney of Chatham County, both have the power to rescind Troy Davis's
execution warrant, and Baker can reopen an investigation into the case. The
members of the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles could re-consider their
shameful decision to deny Troy clemency but have refused to do so. All of these
public officials need to be held accountable!

The attention on Troy's case is the reason he lives today. On Monday, September
29, the Campaign to End the Death Penalty is calling for a coordinated day of
demonstrations and petitioning to draw attention to the injustices of his case
and to call for clemency.

Also, if you haven’t yet, you can go to Amnesty International’s website and sign
their online letter urging the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to
reconsider clemency for Troy:

And you can send a letter to the editor of a local newspaper using the ACLU’s
automated system:

AUSTIN PROTEST IN SUPPORT OF TROY DAVIS THIS MONDAY

Austin's chapter of the Campaign to END the Death Penalty is holding a protest
Monday, September 29th in support of Georgia death-row inmate Troy Davis. Davis,
who has a strong innocence claim, was granted a temporary stay by the U.S.
Supreme Court on Tuesday, less than 2 hours before his scheduled execution. The
stay lasts only until September 29th, when the Supreme Court is set to consider
an appeal from Davis for new evidence of innocence. If the appeal is rejected,
the execution could proceed as early as that day.

Irrespective of the Supreme Court decision, Austinites will gather at 5:30 pm on
Monday, September 29th at the south-side Capitol steps in support of Troy Davis.

Davis was sentenced to death in 1989 for the murder of Police Officer Mark
MacPhail. There was no physical evidence and the weapon used in the crime was
never found. Davis maintains his innocence and since his conviction, 7 out of 9
trial witnesses have recanted their testimony and cited police coercion in sworn
affidavits. One of the two remaining witnesses, Sylvester 'Red' Coles, is the
chief alternative suspect, according to the defense, against whom there is new
evidence implicating him as the gunman. Nine individuals have signed affidavits
implicating Coles.

Monday's Austin protest is part of a National Call to Action for Troy Davis.

The Campaign to END the Death Penalty is a grassroots organization dedicated to
the abolition of capital punishment in the United States.

RALLY to Save Troy Davis: Stop the Execution of an Innocent Man!
(Part of a national day of action in solidarity with Troy Davis)
Monday, September 29 noon
Federal Plaza (Adams & Dearborn)

On September 23, the Supreme Court issued a stay of execution to Georgia Death
Row prisoner Troy Davis after tens of thousands of people made phone calls,
wrote letters, and attended demonstrations on his behalf. But now, Troy could
face another execution date unless the Supreme Court intervenes.

The Supreme Court will be meeting Monday, September 29 to decide whether to hear
Troy's case. No gun, no DNA, no fingerprints, and no physical evidence of any
kind were used to convict him. 7 of the 9 witnesses in his case have recanted
their trial testimony, and several have said they were pressured by police. In
effect, what the Supreme Court justices will be deciding is whether it's OK to
allow the execution of an innocent man if his appeals have expired. We think
this is a no-brainer. If they look at the facts and make the right call, Troy
lives. If they decline to hear the case, Troy could be executed that night, or
the day after, or in the weeks to come, if Georgia sets a new execution date.

Troy lives today because of countless individuals have made their voices heard
in defiance of his execution. Join us Monday for the Chicago leg of a national
day of action in opposition to the state-sanctioned killing of Troy Davis.

Don't let the State of Georgia execute an innocent man!

WASHINGTON, DC

ATTENTION!!!!! URGENT ACTION NEEDED!!!!!
As you all know, the Supreme Court of the United States has granted Troy Anthony
Davis a temporary stay in order to review the case and make a decision on
whether or not to try him on the Federal level. We must not become complacent
with this development and we must increase public pressure.

Towards that end, the Black August Planning Organization and the Nat Turner
Rebellion are going to hold a rally and press conference in front of the US
Supreme Courts steps at First Street & Maryland Ave NE at 11am on Monday 9-29.
That is the day that the Justices will meet to discuss Troy's fate.

We are calling on all to attend and we are calling for organizations to
co-sponsor and participate in this effort.
If you are interested in participating please respond to this e-mail as soon as
possible. Remember, Troy's life is still at stake.

Straight Ahead!!!

Naji Mujahid, Black August Planning Organization
Thomas Ruffin, Nat Turner Rebellion.

"I would like to leave behind me the conviction that if we maintain a certain
amount of caution and organization we deserve victory... You cannot carry out
fundamental change without a certain amount of madness. In this case, it comes
from nonconformity, the courage to turn your back on the old formulas, the
courage to invent the future. It took the madmen of yesterday for us to be able
to act with extreme clarity today. I want to be one of those madmen. We must
dare to invent the future."Thomas Sankara, 1985-- The spirit of Black August
moves through centuries of Black, Indian and multi-cultural resistance. It is an
emblem of the spirit of freedom. It is a long smoldering spark of the fire in
the hearts of a people, hearts burning and yearning for freedom.”-Mumia abu
