Mission of this Yahoo Group:
To promote greater awareness of, respect for, and the total participation of at-risk youths into all aspects of life.
To achieve this goal, the mentor will form a relationship that will provide a positive influence in the life of an at-risk youth and organize and improve his life in order to help him to overcome adversity and achieve his goals. The foundation of such a relationship is based on honesty and consistency. Trust within the relationship will be earned by the responsible, goal-oriented and proactive actions of the mentor. The mentor will consistently demonstrate his competence and expertise through regular one-on-one, customized hands-on meetings to meet each youth's individual needs on an as-needed basis. Such meetings will include counseling, sharing ideas, giving youths insight, goal-setting advice, guidance & support, discussing difficulties & brainstorming potential directions. Each youth will be given individualized time and attention on a consistent basis, with the venue being the child's home and community. The mentor will set measurable, definable and achievable goals for the youth, with timely follow-up and accountability.
The youth will meet regularly with his mentor - typically weekly, utilizing the resources available within his community, such as: computer labs at the library, community centers . The mentor will strive to help change the lives of at-risk, troubled youths who have been abused, neglected, abandoned, orphaned, are homeless, runaways, foster children, teen parents, victims of domestic violence, children of prisoners, substance abusers, gang members or the incarcerated. Examples of mentoring & advocacy:
- Attend and participate in school meetings, conferences, events in order to learn who is instructing the youth, what the curriculum is, what textbooks and instructional material is used - Write letters to school administrators in order to hold them accountable for providing the services needed
