Roland Camm-3 Model PNC-3000 This is a 3 axis high precision milling machine.
This device is used .
The Roland Camm-3 comes with the control panel and drill chuck and table vice
and some cutters
I am selling this machine `as-is' since I can only test using manual commands.
Manuals included:
Command Reference manual
User's Manual
This machine that would be great for commercial or hobby use. It weighs about
125lb.
I found there are many instructional videos and interfacing instructions
available on the web. $600.00 can be seen at 964 battles ave akron / kenmore

If you can get hold of a copy of techsoft 2d design tools it is really good and
drives the camm3 direct.

the original software is in the files section of this group. not the best, but
good enough that you can test out the unit.

Hello!
We are dusting off a CAMM-3 PNC-300 that's been around here for over 10 years.
The machine seems to function ok but we are really struggling with communication
and programming. We haven't been able to find any manuals for this one so that
hasn't helped. We are currently setup through a serial cable to a Windows 7 64
bit PC.
The error that won't go away is a ESC.E Err15: Framing/Parity error. We have
tried numerous settings, always matching the PC to the machine but we still get
this error. We are using a COM port emulator just to try to fix this and then
we'll work on the CAM side. If we send an H to the machine we'll get this Err15
error but if we press the Enter button and then Enter again when the display
shows Pause On CONTINUE it will run the code, in this case home the machine.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem?
Thanks!
Jason
Don't have experience with that problem specifically, but the only simple solution I have ever found is running the CAMM-3 with an older PC.
My dad has an old CNC engraver (similiar vintage to CAMM-3) which also had the same type of problem you are experiencing trying to run through an emulator. I can't explain the technical reasons, but I think it has to do with how ports are assigned (in software vs. hardware).
I had a CAMM-3 PNC 3000 that I ran with a parallel port connection using Windows 98. I upgraded it 2-3 years ago to Windows XP on a 'Net Top' PC still using the parallel port connection and running the Roland software. The only special issue was setting the communication speed so it didn't overflow the buffer.
Don't know if that helps, but it may be an option.

Hi I was wondering how you set up the camm to work with the 2D design software.
I use the 2d design software at work regularly so I know how simple it is to
use. What hardware is needed to use the software? Do you need an interface?
Thanks,
Fiona

I have been using it with a camm3 for the last 6years. The computer is a P4 2ghz with 512mb ram. basicly any PC that will run 2D is fine.
It is running Win XP but Win98 before that.
I installed a print driver (Im not sure if it is on this site but Im back in sorting stuff out next week and get a copy) for the Camm3. So the Camm3 shows up as a printer on XP.
Connection is via a standard Parallel cable (old school printer lead)
When you run 2D go to 'setup' 'Drawing' then select Set for CNC milling and select the Camm 3 from the list.
this sets you page up ready for machining.
Use different colours for different commands ie, Line depth, cut order. (no good cutting an object out then trying to engrave on it!!)
Now Im running 2D version 2 on this PC so if you have an older version it might be a little different because they did make some changes (I would need to check on a machine at school)
When you are happy you have it all drawn up
File- CNC output
CNC Device Roland Camm 3, PNC3000
Output Route Throught printer driver Roland PNC-3000 (click change driver to select that if its not, sometimes mine would throw up an error and all i did was click change driver and select the camm3 again as I had 5 different printers installed)
On the Tools button you get to select the colours you want to machine (so you can use some colours as design guides that wont be machined)
Select the depths for the final cut of each colour etc
In the tool parameters you can set the depth of cut per pass (trial and error) and other tool info. For machining 3mm acrylic I would use a 1.1mm depth and a feed of 12, spindle speed is fixed.
then ensure you have the Camm 3 set up with the cutter, material zeroed etc and take out of manual mode.
on 2d Ok out of setup, then click Output and it will just run the machine from that.
Shout me if you need more help.
I can try nd do some screen grabs etc. Also Ill photo the settings of the switches on the side of the machine, although i have never touched them

hello everyone. i've created this converter for multiply files.
I would love to have some feedback or corrections on this program. you can
contact me on this forum or on my hotmail.com(located in the zip file)
I have uploaded my code for the 16k CAMM-3 EPROM to the Files section.
This is a FWIW, it works much the same as the original but wants it's input as a
pre-digested sludge so it doesn't have to do the digesting.
Written in Z80 assembler it is not for the faint hearted but it is commented,
making it a more understandable starting point for your own driver than the
disassembled mess I got to work from.
The CAMM3 uses INT for COMMs and NMI for the timing which is totally unfriendly.
I use lots of different NMI handlers same as the original firmware, it might
work with one super NMI handler but the 4MHz clock rate doesn't leave you a lot
of headroom when you are fast stepping all 3 axes.
I use it with a USB to serial adapter.
If you send it an ENQ it replies "Roland PNC-3000" so it is easy to find.
It starts up with a home-return off the limit switches so it knows where it is.
It decodes all the buttons, knobs and LED's then tries to do something useful
with them.
I wrote the other end in C# for Microsoft Visual Studio. Slightly complicated
because I had to spawn off a seperate routine to drive the Roland if I was to
avoid boring "Program is not responding" messages. It will work under XP, but
you really want USB2.0 so Win7 machines are a better bet.
Hi just wondering what you had to set the dip switches to to get it to work?
Thanks,
Fiona

Dips I have been running mine on with no probs where 0 = down or towards the front of the machine
SW-1
Mode
1=0
2=0
3=1
4=1
5=1
6=0
Font
7=1
8=1
9=1
10=1
SW-2 all set to 1
For use in techsoft I never bother changing the material size i just drop the drawing onto the CAMM3 layout. I always mount the job level with the left most position of travel and level with the front of the bed. I then position the drawing on the 'bed' within techsoft to fit onto the job.
One thing that can catch people out is when you have mounted your job on the bed, set the zero with the sensor then sent the program from the PC to the camm 3 it throws up the error. This can be because you are trying to get the Z travel to go lower than it is possible (maybe you have fitted a shorter cutter or thinner material) The best way I have found to overcome this is I have 2 pieces of 18mm thick MDF to give a sacraficial bed 36mm thick. i clamp them to the bed then usualy mount the material (modeling foam or acrylic) with double sided tape. If im doing MDF or Aluminium I mount with double sided tape and clamp it too. do all the engraving, holes etc and then finally cut round the shape. The tape is usually good
enough to hold for this final process.
Pro desktop requires a post processor, you export the file from ProD as a stereo lithograph file set to binary
You then open that in the post processor, settng all the info in there to match you machining requirments.
I use Deskproto for this. Its not a bad program add quite cheep and you can download it for a free 30day trial.

I have one that has been used little since it was built. It sat in the offices of UGS for many years without being used. I have had it for about 8 yrs & have never hooked it up to PC. I know it runs because I can manually move the axes. I also have 6 boxes of mold material that might be for sale, if you interested.
I will get more information for you later on today. I am located in western NC near Asheville.

Has anyone out there found a suitable replacement for the spindle motor yet?
I've asked this question three times and no answers yet. I can't be the only one
out there with a motor on it's last leg....

Hi.
I have just converted my CAMM3 to run Mach3 using Andrew Loens board.
Having a few issues with trying to get it to work.
Does any one have the correct Dip switch settings for the Camm3 as I had a small
pair of fingers play with them while the mill was still in storage.
Many thanks.
Neil
My Camm3 has all the switches to the left (towards the numbers), except for the very top one, which is in the ON position.
