Hi all,
Today around noon Tony Kurz, Daryl Coldren, Rob Hewitt and myself identified
another adult LITTLE STINT. A little before noon I spotted a peep on the
west side of the Mad River that looked very rufous-colored and told Tony
about it who was in his kayak. He ended up getting out of his kayak on the
west side of the Mad River, at the north end of Mad River County Park, and
started looking through all the peeps that were on that side. Daryl an Rob
showed up soon after and Tony called us to tell us he had a very bright peep
foraging right in front of him on the gravel bar. Long story short we ended
up getting on the bird also and saw field marks that were consistent with an
adult LITTLE STINT. Daryl was able to see all the marks on the bird through
his high-powered Leica scope, whereas I was only able to make out a bright
rufous-colored peep that was brighter than all the Least and Westerns
present (non-flourite Kowa Scope). Daryl and Tony were both able to note the
white throat (Daryl got the best look at this), rufous wash on the sides of
the breast with spotting limited to this area, rufous-edged tertials, and
black legs. According to Tony, he also saw some white braces on the back.
Tony might have gotten a couple of usable photos of the bird through his
binoculars. Daryl tried to get over there in Tony's kayak with his scope to
get some good digiscopes of the bird but to no avail as the tide was rising
pretty quickly and most of the shorebirds dispersed by then. With the looks
that Daryl got he feels that this bird was different from the recent-most
LITTLE STINT that he and Rob Hewitt had at the Eel River mouth last Tuesday.

For people interested in looking for this bird it will be best to try in the
morning. The low tide is going to be around 1128 tomorrow. The birds can
really be anywhere on the Mad then but most of the peeps were present on the
west side of the river on the gravel bar that is right about where the dunes
end at the north end of Mad River County Park so it might be best to walk in
from Mad River County Park. There were also shorebirds present on the large
gravel bar island that is just to the east of the above mentioned bar but
the STINT was present almost solely on the west gravel bar. To access this
portion of the Mad River from the east side you have to park at the west end
of Hiller Rd. and there's an obvious parking area with a trail entrance.
Walk to the west on the trail and go down the stairs to the river and then
walk upriver. Waterproof boots are handy here.

Of lesser interest I found a juvenile STILT SANDPIPER and juvenile SOLITARY
SANDPIPER at the Brackish Pond at the Arcata Marsh earlier this morning.

Good shorebirding to ya'll!

Since no one else has posted an update thought I'd let folks know that Todd
Easterla's awesome find is still present in the same location for a fourth day.
Take county road 28H to the end, sign in and the yellow gate is open til 1 p.m.
The bird was in the drying up pond on the south side of the Auto Tour road just
before it takes the last right turn back to the start when I was leaving around
9 a.m.
Just look for all the birders.
Thanks Mr. Easterla!!

The trip report for our last trip featuring Martijn Verdoes' photos is
up on the Monterey Seabirding blog at:
http://montereyseabirding.blogspot.com/2011/08/aug-20-2011-trip-report.html

More photos are also up on the Monterey Seabirds Facebook page.

We are looking for more birders to join us this weekend as we have a 12
hour offshore albacore grounds trip next Saturday Aug. 27 that in past
years has turned up rarities like STREAKED, WEDGE-TAILED and MANX
SHEARWATERS, CRAVERI'S MURRELET, HORNED PUFFIN, LAYSAN ALBATROSS and
last year we had a GREAT-WINGED PETREL for the third North American
record. These long trips are productive!

See trip reports at: http://www.montereyseabirds.com/SeabirdTripReports.htm

We will host an 8 hour trip the following day on Sunday, Aug. 28 and
there are a plenty of spaces still open for that one. Both trips will
have plenty of elbow room for photographers to pan with big lenses.

See our website for details, trip reports and trip registration or call
831 375-4658 to reserve.

Hi all,
Despite 5-6 birders spending much quality time around the Mad River Estuary
today none of us refound the LITTLE STINT from yesterday. Shorebird numbers
were much lower than yesterday with only maybe around 60-70 peeps present at
the peak of their numbers today. Oh well.....

The STILT SANDPIPER was seen by many observers at the Brackish Pond at the
Arcata Marsh today and Tony Kurz and Jesse Sargent saw the SOLITARY
SANDPIPER later this evening, also.

More Asian shorebirds are out there. Go find them!

I drove all night from the WFO conference in Arizona and was relieved to see
that the Common Ringed Plover was still at the Davis Wetlands in Yolo County.
Todd had called me moments after he found the bird so I was a bit nervous about
missing it, knowing that it would have to stick around until this morning. Was
able to get a few photos and share the bird with quite a few fellow birders.

Thanks again Todd for finding and documenting such an amazing bird!

PS Todd had called me on Thursday night and said that he was going to find the
best shorebird ever found in the Central Valley on Friday…..and he actually
did!!!!!

We may schedule another shorebird workshop for September 10-11 if there is
enough interest.

We were thrilled to see the Common Plover this morning, August 25. Ran into
some nice people from San Diego and Huntington Beach.

For those of you that need directions--Take the Chiles Road exit off 80 and stay
to the right till you get to H28--turn right and go down to the sign in station.
There is a bungee cord on the gate--just open it and be sure to reclose it after
you sign in--follow the tour signs and look for the birders!

We got great views of the bird. Thanks to Todd for finding it!

return, so you should look in the morning there. Perhaps it may even reappear

Howdy, Birders,

The singular highlight of Shearwater Journeys' pelagic trip on Monterey Bay,
today, August 26, 2011 was a GREAT-WINGED PETREL (Pterodroma macroptera gouldi),
first spotted flying up the wake by Abe Borker and Jeri Langham at 10:58 a.m.
Everyone on board saw this bird. We followed it for six minutes. It was in Santa

Dennis Cavallo found the first Placer County and the second Central Valley
record of a Buff-breasted Sandpiper this morning at the Lincoln WTP on Fiddyment
Road. This is a great find and the first one seen by multiple observers in the
Central Valley.

I have posted photos on my "Recent Photos" gallery on my photo website. Click
on photo gallery tab on my homepage at www.sterlingbirds.com

I also saw and photographed the Solitary Sandpiper found yesterday by Steve and
Diane Rose at the Marysville WTP. This is the first record for Yuba County!
The Pectoral Sandpiper, three Red-necked Phalaropes and a juvenile Lesser
Yellowlegs also continued there.

The Marysville WTP can be accessed by car (but be careful driving on the levees)

Morning,
If you traveling to Yosemite NP this weekend, you may be interested.
Yesterday morning on the Evergreen Rd. the road to Hetch Hetchy I
observed a Northern Goshawk on Evergreen Rd.
Location: From Hwy 120 turn left on to Evergreen Rd. as you cross the
very first bridge on Evergreen Rd ( Crane Creek ? ) drive about 50
feet, on the left there is an opening in the forest.
The NOGO came out of this opening.
It wasn't chasing a bird so it was a bit relaxed, it circled over me and
return to the left of the road (north-side of road) a high elevated pine
on an branch close to the trunk.
There was no calling, NOGO was staring at me from the perch and did not
leave it's perch.
Have a great long weekend,

First, the Common Ringed Plover at the Davis Wetlands appears to have moved on.
Also, the shorebird habitat is drying up. (The westernmost pond at the Davis
Wastewater Treatment Plant looks like it will be good for shorebirds soon,
though.)

The Davis Wetlands is open 7am-1pm MONDAYS ONLY from Sept 1 (tomorrow) thru Feb
15. This was the arrangement when the acquisition was made because hunting
occurs on adjacent lands. Note that dove hunting season starts tomorrow.

On a related note, the EASTERN KINGBIRD just found by Mary Schiedt at the Yolo
Bypass Wildlife Area (Yolo's first in 38 years!) will also be in a closed
section starting tomorrow. The kingbird might be viewed from the east levee of
the East Toe Drain, presumably accessed from the end of Marshall in West Sac and
walking south. I've never done that before, but I have accessed it just north
of there before.

good birding,

Steve Hampton
