Hi Birders
You are cordially invited to attend Los Angeles Audubon Society's
monthly meeting this coming Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:30pm.
The address is Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd., Rm 6 of the
Community Center, West Hollywood, CA 90046. Refreshments will be
served at the bookstore after the meeting.
Please join us this night as our local, gull expert, Larry Allen,
gives a presentation at our December monthly meeting. Larry has led
identification workshops for the chapter and fieldtrips studying our
gull species:
What Gull is That? Speciation among the Larids
When the next edition of your favorite North American field guide is
published, you will note that the scientific names of many Gull (and
other) species will have changed: Bonaparte's Gull will be
Chroicocephalus philadelphia and Laughing Gull will be Leucophaeus
atricilla for example. And, if your field guide follows AOU order,
Swallow-tailed Gull will be the first picture in the gull section
Larry will discuss the reasons for these changes and touch on the
history of gull systematics. We will explore some of the problems
imposed by hybridization and the comparatively recent evolutionary
radiation of many gull species. Larry will also provide
identification tips to help in discriminating among the many members
of this interesting and complex group.

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our Lancaster
Christmas Bird Count, Saturday, December 19, 2009. Please contact us
if you'd like to participate in this area where habitat can still be
found supporting resident LeConte's Thrasher and wintering Mountain
Plover, and raptors.
See you Wednesday night!

Hi all,
The Black Vulture continued in Santa Paula this morning, December 2. It was
perched in an oak tree in front of 1147 Say Road at 8:00 when I arrived (being
viewed by other birders), and eventually flew to the utility pole 100 feet to
the east and was there when I left at 8:50.

Dear North American Birds contributors,
The fall season has come to a close. Please submit your noteworthy
bird records from the Northern California Region for the period 1
August – 30 November to the appropriate Subregional Editors (SREs) by
10 December.
SREs diligently keep track of records within their counties. By
sending your records to the SREs, you are contributing to their
county files as well as to North American Birds. If you wish to send
records to the Regional Editors, we welcome them. But please send
records to the SREs as well. If you have a noteworthy record from a
county without an SRE, please send it to the Regional Editors.

Thousands of votes have been cast for Audubon California's 2009 Bird of the
Year, and yet the top two birds are separated by just two percentage points.
Only one week remains to cast votes.
Audubon California seeks to recognize a California bird species of conservation
interest that made a significant impact in 2009. All members of the public are
encouraged to cast their votes online on Audubon California's website at
www.ca.audubon.org<http://www.ca.audubon.org/> through Dec. 7. You can vote as
many times as you like.
You can vote for any bird, but the Audubon California Board of Directors has
nominated six species in particular: California Condor, Brown Pelican, Peregrine
Falcon, Acorn Woodpecker, Yellow-billed Magpie, and Western Snowy Plover.

Folks,
Sorry for the late report, but I thought some might be interested in a
report on "Al," the Laysan Albatross at Point Arena Cove in Mendocino
County. Kimya Lambert and I saw him fly in around 3:30 pm on Friday,
11/27/09. Both legs appeared to be working well (photos from the winter of
06/07 showed an apparent broken leg).

County Coordinators/Contributors:
The Fall Season (1 August through 30 November) has ended, and we
solicit reports for inclusion in the Southern California Region of NORTH
AMERICAN BIRDS. Reports should be arranged with species in the taxonomic
order followed by the American Ornithologists Union (Check-List of North
American Birds 1998 and supplements) and the American Birding Association
(6th edition of
the ABA Checklist, 2002). Reports of species included on the California
Bird Records Committee (CBRC) review list (Field List of California Birds
2005, obtainable through Western Field Ornithologists at 1359 Solano Drive,
Pacifica, CA 94044 <http://www.wfo.cbrc.org> www.wfo.cbrc.org) must be
accompanied by documentation
(written description, photographs, etc.). Similar documentation should also
accompany reports of species unusual for the location or season. Full
names, with all initials, should be used in the reports (this reduces the
potential for different observers having the same initials, and makes it
simpler to acknowledge contributors).
Reports should be sent to the appropriate County Coordinators (listed below)
or directly to Guy McCaskie. Reports for this season must be received prior
to 15 December 2008. NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS can not exist without your input.

I'm new to the area and work about 18 miles north of Bridgeport in the Eastern
Sierra Nevadas. I was hiking in the Toiyabe Nat'l Forest this morning and
noticed a Zonotrichia sp. sparrow that looked like a Golden-crowned. I'm not
real familiar with the species, and the range maps I have show them wintering
west of the Sierra Nevadas. Has their winter range changed? Any help, ideas,

Hi all,
I ran up to the Salton Sea and saw the Ancient Murrelet, found by Steve Arlow,
(still at the location given in my previous post below) from 1:00pm till 2:10pm
when I left. I was able to get a few lousy digiscope shots of it when I first
arrived as it was about 100 yards north of the corner of the sea wall. It was
preening out at that distance and very loosely associating with the Ruddy Duck
flock for about ten minutes then it slowly moved closer to shore. It got close
enough to shore on the east side of the inlet that I could no longer see it so I
moved out onto the rocks to view down the shoreline. It surprised me as it was
actively feeding on and chasing Tilapia minnows within a few feet of the shore
and right below me! Had to pull the adapter of my camera and got a few shots of
it rather close. It spent most of the rest of the hour actively feeding right at
the base of the rock sea wall from about 20 feet west of the inlet to a few
hundred feet east of the inlet. Naomi from the NWR refuge showed up with a good
camera and probably has some very fine pictures of this bird. You could
actually see it flying under water and the minnows scattering before it! It was
a few hundred feet east of the inlet and the corner of Lack Road when I left.

Subject: [SDBIRDS] Ancient Murrelet at Salton Sea
Hi all,
Just got a call (11:35am) from Eric Duerkop at the Sonny Bono Salton Sea NWR. A
Steve A.(unknown last name) posted on their sightings list this morning an
Ancient Murrelet on the Salton Sea. Eric went out and confirms that there is one
Ancient Murrelet just off of the sea wall at the north dead end of Lack Road,
where the sea wall turns east, which is just south of Obsidian Butte and north
of the intersection with Lindsey Road on the SE side of the Salton Sea. Funny
thing is that, to my understanding, Ancient Murrelet are the only Alcids ever
recorded at the Salton Sea and rarely at that!

The Lesser Black-backed Gull at the Kent Ave. pond in Kings Co. is now
California's first specimen for this species. I was the only one there when
it died at 11:47a on 17 Nov. With the help of John Lockhart we retrieved the
bird around 2:30p. I have put some photos of the bird in the CALBIRDS

Alan,
In San Luis Obispo County there are a couple of records of territorial
and/or nest-building Heermann's Gulls along the bluff off Shell Beach. I
don't believe the few attempts there have actually produced young, but
the gulls went through the motions nonetheless. Pressures from Western
Gulls and roosting Brown Pelicans may have something to due with those
unsuccessful nesting attempts. I photographed one of the birds on
territory in June as it tended to the nest site, but I don't remember if
any eggs were actually seen that particular year.

I am not able to see the photos (not sure why), but I would agree about
salvaging the specimen.
I am not aware of field characteristics that separate this age Lesser
Black-backed Gull (Heuglin's Gull) from the expected race of Lesser
Black-backed Gull. I believe that this could be solved by a specimen.

Steve Hampton's sharp eyes caused me to go back through the photos and I
added two to the gulls file that clearly show the pale base to the lower
mandible and an ivory bill tip. I don't have any better shots showing gray
in the back, but just from the bill alone it's clearly not a first winter
bird. The eye looks dark in all photos and you can barely make out pale
edges on the primary tips in some photos so I wonder if it's an advanced
first summer/second winter bird that's not very far along in feather molt.
Would it's health, or lack of it, contribute to a tardy molt and dark eyes
as well? Hopefully someone can preserve the bird and it won't go to waste.

On my way back from seeing my lifer Nelson's Sparrow this morning at Morro Bay I
decided to check out the ponds at Jersey and Kent along Hwy 41 in Kings county
and I found a gull in the south pond that I believe is a first winter Lesser
Black-backed Gull. When I left at 4:40 it was still there but Mark Stacey
couldn't locate it as it was getting dark this evening so hopefully it will be
back. There had been 75 Bonapartes Gulls in the ponds as well that Mark didn't
notice so maybe all the gulls are roosting somewhere else. I put 3 photos of the
bird in the gulls photo folder here. Good luck if you go looking for it! Gary

Not since April has there been a confirmed sighting of a GREATER ROADRUNNER in
Tulare County - at least on eBird. Wednesday a beautiful male species was
sighted along Rocky Hill Road near Yokohl Valley Road. Birding guide Gary

ROCK WREN, CANYON WREN, BARN OWL, GREAT-HORNED OWL, and both PRAIRIE and
PEREGRINE FALCONS.
