Greetings,

Albatrosses, Cookilaria Petrels, Leach's & Ashy Storm-Petrels (and
who knows what else?) is on the docket for this spring's mother of
all pelagic trips out of SoCal.

The first two exploratory trips on the 95-foot live-aboard SEARCHER
in April of 2003 were the brainchild of pelagic pioneers Don
Desjardin and Walter Wehtje. Those two back-to-back historic
trips "to see what was out there" tallied an astounding 91 MURPHY'S
PETRELS, 2 COOKS PETRELS, 13 LAYSAN ALBATROSSES, 60 JAEGERS (3
flavors), 9 TROPICBIRDS, 190 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 20 ASHY STORM-
PETRELS, more than 1500 SHEARWATERS (4 flavors), TUFTED PUFFIN.....
well, the list goes on and on... and the rest is history.

Trip and species logs of all SEARCHER trips 2003 - 2008:
http://www.bajawhale.com/birdingtrips.asp

Ever since those first two exploratory trips in 2003, owners Art
Taylor and Celia Condit have blocked 2 weeks of SEARCHER'S natural
history calendar each year for pelagic birders - one in spring, one
in fall. These trips are geared exclusively for pelagic birders who
want to see SoCal's regional pelagic specialties and hunt its
rarities and mega-rarities.

SEARCHER is now taking reservations for its annual spring trip,
departing Thursday, April 30 and returning to port at 6:00 a.m.
Monday morning, May 4. Expert pelagic trips leaders include
Todd "Skua" McGrath, Paul "Parasitic Jaeger" Lehman and Doctor Jon
Feenstra.

Join us on the adventure. Out on the Pacific Ocean, under the sun,
riding the swells with the clean fresh breeze on your face, days blur
into a soft dream. Time slows, even stands still, as you become more
and more disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the "real" world.
No cell phones. No computers. No traffic. Nothing but sunshine,
whales, birds, people who love birds and birding. THIS, is the real
world…. the ultimate adventure. That "other" world, the one you left
behind is…. so… far…. away….

Nine teams with 41 young birders (7-14) and experienced birding
leaders hiked by foot 6.75 miles in 16 hours through routes in the
City of Sonoma representing unique habitats, including Fryer and
Nathason's Creeks, Sonoma Plaza, the Gen. Vallejo fields, Bartholomew
Park, Depots Park, Sonoma Garden Park and lower Sonoma Mt.

A total of 53 species and 1,385 birds were recorded. (sunny, 45-70º
clear day with little wind) The leading birding teams were at Fryer
Creek (283 birds) and Sonoma Garden Park (324 birds) both with 32
total species. Eight new species were discovered this year including
the Green Heron, American Wigeon (plaza pond), Pine Siskin, Bushtit,
Varied Thrush, Say's Phoebe, Eurasian-Collard-Dove and Sharp-shinned
Hawk. Last year 20 participants recorded 41 species and 537 birds.

A tabulation celebration at the SCC was highlighted by team
presentations and four live birds from Bird Rescue of Sonoma including
a Great Horned Owl, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel and a Merlin.
Over 100 people attend the celebration. The Rotary Club donated
backpacks for the bird books and brown bag lunches and calculators to
help kids tally their birds. Special thanks to our host the SCC and
nature partners, Madrone Audubon, RROS, PRBO and SEC.

Greetings,

The Buena Vista Audubon 3rd Annual Seabirds, Dolphins and Whales half-
day pelagic trip goes out Saturday morning, Jan 31 from Helgren's
Sportfishing and Whale Watching in Oceanside Harbor.

This pelagic is a bargain at only $40 – the past two winter trips
from Oceanside have sold out. Two to four Gray Whales a day are
being seen by Helgren's off Oceanside every day; more than 100 have
been sighted since mid-December, plus 3 calves. We should also get
some great dolphin shows: Bottlenose, Common, Risso's and perhaps
Pacific White-sided.

On the Sea & Sage Audubon trip out of Dana Point this past Saturday
(Jan 10) we had a phenomenal trip. We saw 8 Pomarine Jaegers, a
Short-tailed Shearwater, a Sooty Shearwater, 2 Xantus's Murrelet, 2
Common Murre and 2 species of dolphin. Everybody had a wonderful
time. Trip Report:
http://www.socalbirding.com/tripreports/jan102009danapoint.html
or http://www.socalbirding.com and click on Trip Reports

The Jan 31 trip is a great opportunity to see a Short-tailed
Shearwater. The first record of Manx Shearwater for San Diego was
recorded in these waters off Oceanside on 28 Apr 2004. A Black-
legged Kittiwake or Ancient Murrelet could turn up on this trip.

We'll have excellent leaders/spotters aboard to help you see and
identify the birds and marine mammals we encounter: Guy McCaskie,
Todd McGrath, Jon Feenstra, Peter Ginsburg, Stan Walens and Terry
Hunefeld.

This coming Saturday (January 24) I can get the same boat from Avila which had
the 2 Parakeet Auklets and the other birds seen below (last Saturday 1/17) on a
Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival trip. Of course, this would only occur if  if I
can get enough people to commit to paying $75 for the all day trip.  If
interested, you would have to be in Avila at 7:30 am and we would return at
about 4 pm.  I need a minimum of 20 people to go and I need a firm commitment
tonight - Wednesday night.  We have GPS coordinates, but of course there is no
guarantee that these same birds will be re-found. Checks will be made out to
me and I will have to pay the charter company tomorrow so I really need to know
if you agree to show up and pay me for sure.  Thanks!

Tom Edell's account:

Our highlight was two PARAKEET AUKLETS seen
well by everyone on the boat. And, we managed to get some good photographs of
the birds which were found at -121°03'676" W, 35°05'195" N, or about 14 miles
west-southwest of Point Buchon. This is the second county record for this
species, the first involved a deceased bird picked up on the beach at San Simeon
on February 6, 1955. Brad Schram's photos can be seen at
_http://www.flickr.com/photos/chaparralbrad/sets/_ (http:
//www.flickr.com/photos/chaparralbrad/sets/) at the end of the
  California Vagrant Birds set.

Other birds seen today included a few hundred NORTHERN FULMAR (at least one
flock of over 100 birds seen on the water), PINK-FOOTED, SOOTY and
SHORT-TAILED, and BLACK-VENTED Shearwaters, several hundred each COMMON MURRE,
CASSIN'S
AUKLET and RHINOCEROS AUKLET, three ANCIENT MURRELETS and three MARBLED
MURRELETS.

When I spotted this big bird hunkered down in my neighbors lemon tree
I had to do a double take! We live in the flats of Oakland, 94609. I
grabbed my bins and scope and by the time I got back outside the
bittern had flown to the next house down the street. Since this is
only the second time I have seen this bird. The first time was in
Sacramento (Gray Lodge NWR??) This bird hunkered down the whole day
and into the evening. I had a gloomy feeling about this beautiful,
secretive bird, I thought maybe it was sick, and had the bird rescue #
  at the ready.
However, in the early hours of the morning, I was again lucky enough
to see it fly away! Wow what a special inauguration Day for me!
I have posted 2 pics of this beautiful bird's head and neck!

All,

Matt Brady and I found a second cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL this morning at
the Harkins Slough Dump off of Buena Vista Drive. To my knowledge this is a
first county record. I obtained a lot of slightly distant photos of the bird
using Matt's camera, which we will post a little later today. To reach this
location, take Buena Vista Drive from hwy 1 towards the ocean, and take a left
on Harkins Slough Road. The dump will appear on your right shortly, and there
are a few spots where it is possible to pull over on the right hand side of the
road next to some small fenced-in structures. Here you can view the dump by
walking up to the tall fence behind the short conifers and scoping through the
fence. There were many thousands of gulls present, as they were turning the
trash with tractors, which one of the workers said usually happens in the
mid-morning, 7 days/week.

Also present were no less than FIVE GLAUCOUS GULLS, all of which appeared to be
first cycle birds. Two of these were down in the slough.

Good birding,

Oscar Johnson

Hi Birders. Here are the photos of the apparent second-cycle LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL that Oscar Johnson and I saw this morning at Harkin's Slough,
Watsonville, Santa Cruz County: <http://flickr.com/photos/podoces/3221442354/>.
Unfortunately, due to the our distance from the bird as well as weather
conditions (it was drizzling), some features turned up a bit better in these
photos than others. For example, it is difficult to see in these photos, but
the bird had a distinct amber eye. Also, the bill was pale-tipped, and the
rectrices had distinct, white (but marked) bases. Overall, the tail pattern was
similar to that of Old World Herring Gulls.

The bird was about the size of a Herring Gull, and the mantle was rather dark,
about the same shade as the Western Gulls that were around. This feature is a
bit difficult to discern from the photos, but was obvious in the field. The
head streaking was concentrated on the nape and crown, and was thin, but
distinct. The tertials were quite dark (almost black), but had broad, obvious
white edges. We found this to be the best feature to look for when trying to
relocate the bird in the flock. The primaries were rather long, about twice the
length of the tail, though this particular feature does not seem to be
well-illustrated in any of these photos.

Unfortunately before the bird flapped so that we could obtain spread-wing shots,
it walked over the crest of a small hill and we lost it. So, the photos of it
stretching as it preened are the only photos of the bird with its wing open.

Of course, comments, concerns, and criticisms regarding this bird are more than
welcome. Thanks, and good birding.

Here in the UK this bird would not be identidied as a Lesser Black-backed Gull
and would probably go unnoticed amongst the many Herring Gulls here, there are
to many pro Herring Gull features.

Lesser Black-backed of the race Graellsii should appear overall darker, more
dusky with more uniform patterned, less obvious barred wing coverts. The largely
pale bill on this bird is also not overly supportive of LBBGull and the
primaries not long enough beyond the tertials, at least in the photos. The broad
pale tips to the tertials are also not good for LBBGull whilst the overall feel
is Herring rather then LBBGull.

Birds - Not a great variety of birds at Panoche this past Saturday, Jan. 24, as
measured by past experience, but several Golden Eagles, at least one Bald Eagle,
Hooded Mergansers in a new roadside pond, Tri-colored Blackbirds, and Merlin
plus Prairie Falcon were nice. Mountain Plovers were also reported, but guess we
were looking in the opposite direction when we passed them. Notably missing
from our list were Phainopepla, Roadrunner, and Chukar.

Birders - In speaking with the locals we were made acutely aware of their
impressions that birders were directing binoculars toward private residences,
and also that birders tend to wander across and stand in the middle of the road
without due attention to local traffic. The road seems empty, but locals admit
that they tend to drive at a lively clip, and are concerned about road safety
for everybody. I'm not saying that any birders are actually being rude, but
simply want everyone to know how sensitive some folks are to our presence as
strangers in their neighborhood. I think it behooves all of us to make special
efforts to consider the feelings of these locals, and to be ultra careful to
avoid offending these folks whom we want for allies.

Panoche Valley is a beautiful isolated, agricultural valley in San Benito
County. Take Rd J-1 (Panoche Road) east out of Paicines. J-1 becomes Little
Panoche Road at a sharp 90o turn north, and continues out to I-5 just south of
the Fresno County, Merced County line.

Little Panoche Valley on Sunday was very windy.
We managed to see the following individual birds of interest driving along
Fresno road J1:
2 Prairie Falcons harassing a Red Tailed Hawk near Mercy Hot Springs.
3 Long-eared Owls
5 Red tailed Hawks
2 Golden Eagles
2 Harriers
There are large flocks of Lark Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrows, American
Water Pipits and Horned Larks

Numbers of Say's Phoebes, Loggerhead Shrikes and Yellow-rumped Warblers
were high also.

Woodbridge Rd WEST off of Hy 5 early Sunday was very windy.
The wintering Sandhill Cranes, Northern Pin-tails, Northern Shovelers
ducks and Greater Whited-fronted Geese were all present in good numbers.
Few American Wigeon and Gadwall.
I counter 80 Tundra Swans and 18 White pelicans mixed together.
There were also 8 Aleutian Geese.
Three Belted Kingfishers, one richly colored Kingfisher female and some 80
Great Egrets and a smaller numbers of Snowy's egrets were nice to view.
Red-tailed Hawks and Harriers were present.
No Mountain Plovers to be found.
About midway along Woodbridge Rd. and looking north there are large acreage
of grain being grown.
The grain may be a type of millet.
I'm not sure but there are hundreds of blackbird species feeding in, maybe
a thousand blackbirds feeding around 8AM.

hundred feet back from the fence line.
The Lewis's did a brief Flycatcher exhibit but other wise it was perched
getting sun.
Acorn Woodpeckers, Oak Titmouse, Red-Tailed Hawks made appearances also.
The area over all had many small groups of Yellow-billed Magpies.
The surprise of the day was Lesser Yellowlegs in one of the stock ponds, I
failed to note the road marker.
The same pond had Bufflehead ducks.
Driving up Mines Rd. near a horse coral - Alameda County along the Arroyo

A CAVE SWALLOW was found by Mark Scheel Sat 31 Jan. at the Sonny Bono
Wildlfe Area Headquarters at the south end of the Salton Sea. Today the
bird reappeared above the viewing platform at mid-day and put on a good
show. This is about the 5th state record, all from Imperial County.

I am putting together a webpage with all of CVBC Bulletin articles published
from 1998 - 2007. Ed Pandolfino is scanning and sending me articles in pdf
format. He recently sent me quite a few files, so I have uploaded them on
the website. See http://www.cvbirds.org/Bulletin.htm and click on the link
to the download webpage for the articles in alphabetical order by title.
Once we get all of the articles online, I'll create another webpage with the
articles in order of their publication, so articles in Vol. 1, issue 1 will
be organized together and so on.

I will be keeping the articles from the previous year and the current year
off the website in order to encourage people to join the CVBC and support
the Bulletin financially.

A big thanks to Ed for helping me out with this exciting project.

Also, please provide suggestions on how to improve the CVBC website. I'm
taking on the task of Webmaster now so am excited to work on the website.

Thanks to Eric Kallen for sending me the current ABA "Peeps" Online Blog. In
their current issue, they (ABA) somehow gave me the credit for finding the
Mangrove Warbler here in San Diego instead of the true finder "Mark
Billings". I have sent a post to the blog owner, that I did not find the
bird and that Mark gets the credit, so that there's no further
misunderstandings.

Thanks,

Doug Aguillard

Sea & Sage Audubon is offering two different Birding Skills Workshops
this month.

The first one, which will be taught by Bill Clark, will focus on RAPTOR
ID. Bill has over 30 years of experience working with birds of prey and
has published on a variety of raptor subjects as well as co-authoring
the Peterson field guide on HAWKS and the PHOTOGRAPHIC GUIDE TO NORTH
AMERICAN RAPTORS. His Introductory Raptor ID Workshop will be held Feb.
13-15 and his Intermediate/Advanced Raptor ID Workshop will be Feb. 21 &
22. Both workshops include indoor lectures as well as field trips.

The second workshop, which will be taught by Sylvia Gallagher, will be
on LEARNING MORE CA BIRD SOUNDS. Sylvia has been teaching a variety of
birding classes here in Orange County for over 25 years. Her popular
classes are full of information about CA birds and their habitats and
each lesson is carefully prepared. The 7 CDs containing bird songs &
calls to be used by students in this class were recorded by Sylvia on
some of her trips and are of excellent quality. The birds to be covered
in this 8-10 week workshop are waterfowl, rails, herons & egrets,
swallows, shorebirds, plus a wide variety of hard-to-see and/or rare
passerines of riparian and open habitats. These workshops will begin
the week of Feb. 16th.

Full information on these Birding Skills Workshops can be found on the
Sea & Sage Audubon webpage at: www.seaandsageaudubon.org . Advanced
reservations are necessary since seating space is limited, but space is
still available as of Feb. 5th in each of the workshops, which will be
held in Huntington Beach.
