Subject: Possible Vega Gull in Half Moon Bay, California.

Folks

David Vander Pluym found another good candidate for a first cycle Vega
Gull in Half Moon Bay today. We have not had a Vega candidate photographed
this winter yet so this is a new bird. The bird closely resembles the two
first year birds from previous years, links are on the page.

Comments on the ID are always welcome. Perhaps a question is warranted to
European birders, how could one know this is not a European Herring Gull
(however unlikely that is in Califoria)?

Here is a link to my photos of the bird, watched by a large group of birders
looking for Slaty-backed Gull.

http://www.coastside.net/chucao/gulls/Vega.htm

This is not a separate species yet according to the AOU, but the nearly
certain split of smithsonianus (American) Herring Gull from the Old World
taxa would make this a species separate from our local Herring Gull.

I have also added photos (by Ryan Terrill and David Vander Pluym) of the
adult Slaty-backed Gull that was around last week, found by Todd McGrath.
Those photos are up top.

This morning, Rob Hewitt and I looked for the reported first-cycle Kumlien's
Iceland gull at the mouth of Redwood Creek in Orick. We saw what may have been
a different bird that fit the description of Kumlien's even better than the one
photographed by Kerry Ross and Rob Fowler yesterday. The bird we saw seemed to
have paler primaries, tail, and head and a finer bill.

Hi All,

Sorry for the cross posting, but this is a message that wants to get
out. I received the following email this morning and it sounds like
an interesting film.

----------------- forwarded message --------------------

Hi,

My name is Michael Gitlin. I'm a filmmaker and birder in New York
City. My film, "The Birdpeople," will be showing at the Los Angeles
Film Forum on Sunday evening, February 26th, in a program called
"Looking at Surveillance." "The Birdpeople" will be screening with
one other film, "How Little We Know of Our Neighbors," by Rebecca
Baron (a small caveat: Rebecca's film is not birding-related). We'll
both be at the screening to introduce the films and answer questions.
I'm trying to spread the word about this screening to the birding and
ornithology community in and around Los Angeles. Please feel free to
forward this information to anyone who you think might be interested
in the film, or to post on your website, or forward to a bird-related
list-serve.

Thanks in advance,

Michael Gitlin

About "The Birdpeople," directed by Michael Gitlin

16mm film, 61 minutes, 2004

A loosely-knit community of birdwatchers in New York's Central Park;
ornithologists with their specimen collections at a dozen different
natural history museums; bird banders gingerly extracting birds from
mist nets and collecting data in upstate New York; six people
searching for a nearly extinct bird in a Louisiana bayou: these are
the strands that are woven together by The Birdpeople as it documents
a passionate fixation.

Part cultural history, part self-reflexive anthropology, by turns
humorous and elegiac, The Birdpeople examines the pleasures and
problems of looking and naming, and investigates the social
construction of nature, centered on ornithology and its amateur
counterpart, bird watching.

The film, which was completed in 2004, six months before the
re-discovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker was announced, takes as
its partial subject the story of the bird's disappearance and the
obsession that has compelled so many to keep searching for it.

Screening at:

The Los Angeles Film Forum
at The Egyptian Theatre
6712 Hollywood Blvd.
Hollywood, CA
Sunday, Feb. 26, 7:00 p.m.
general admission $8
students/seniors $6

The Birdpeople

By: PETER KEOUGH

The Birdpeople doesn’t have much to do with birds or people, but it does
provide a good look at Michael Gitlin’s filmmaking pretensions. The
birdwatchers, bird banders, and bird collectors whom he portrays show
about as much life as the mounted avian specimens that share the screen
with them. The reasons so many people are drawn to birds emerge in
blurred montages of voiceover comments — words like “beauty,”
“obsession,” and “freedom” fall like so many bird calls, unappreciated
and unheeded. Instead of pursuing these cues, Gitlin imposes his own
pseudo-poetry (“When we look at you and you return the look what are you
looking at?”) and stylistic posturing. ...

Hi All,

   Please pardon my cross-posting.

I have created a new group for those of you interested in environmental
issues that affect birds in California. There seems to be an increasing
number of posts on various birding listservs in California about
environmental issues. The birding listservs were setup primarily for bird
sightings. Hopefully, this new listserv will help with some of the off topic
posts.

To subscribe please go to:

birdingenvissuescalif@yahoogroups.com

I have chose to keep the new group unlisted with Yahoo ( not in the public

ATTENTION HAWK WATCHERS!

There are still a few spaces left for this weekend’s Raptor ID Workshop
conducted by Bill Clark in Huntington Beach. The workshop, sponsored by
Sea & Sage Audubon, is designed for those birders who already have had
some field experience watching raptors. The workshop will consist of 6
hours of classroom instruction on Sat, Feb. 18 (with a break for lunch)
and an all-day field trip on Sunday to the Antelope Valley. Although the
basic field marks will be presented, emphasis will be on the more
advanced topics.

The required text for the workshop will be the 2nd edition of HAWKS by
Clark & Wheeler (Houghton Mifflin Co, 2001). Copies will be available
for purchase at the workshop.

Bill Clark has over 30 years of experience working with birds of prey,
and has published on a variety of raptor subjects, including many papers
on raptor identification.

Classes will be held at the home of Sylvia and Jim Gallagher in
Huntington Beach. Enrollment is limited to 25 persons.

The cost of the workshop is $120 per person for the Feb. 18-19 weekend.

Call Sylvia Gallagher at (714) 962-8990 if you are interested in
attending. If you decide late on Friday that you wish to attend, please
call the Sea & Sage Audubon office at (949) 261-7963; your call will be
returned if you call before 9:00 pm.

Subject: Woodpecker Query (Esp. Lewis')
nathaniel_wa...

For the Cornell Birds in Forested Lands project, I plan to study breeding
Lewis' Woodpeckers this spring and summer. Although I realize there are
breeding populations a lot closer to San Francisco, I am especially
interested in locating potential Lewis' habitats in Modoc County. Among my
reasons for wanting to go so far afield are that range maps indicate I
could possibly see as many as three lifer woodpeckers in the area as well:
Black-backed Woodpecker; White-headed Woodpecker; and Williamson's Sapsucker.

Do you know of, or can you direct me to people familiar with breeding
Lewis' populations in NE California? Because the species is so
opportunistic, it might be as useful to identify appropriate habitats
rather than known populations. Choice Lewis' breeding habitats include
open ponderosa pine, open riparian woodlands, and burned/logged over areas
between 10-25 years old.

Secondary to Modoc County, I'd also be interested in learning about Sierra
populations/habitats east of San Francisco. I'd also be interested in
recommendations for finding the other three species mentioned, as well as
any suggestions of where else to post this query.

Please respond off-line. If there are others who would want me to share
what I find out, also address me directly. If interest seems great enough,
I'll post a summary back to the site, and, of course, I'll check in over
the summer and let CalBirders know if I'm finding anything interesting.

Thanks.

Hi Birders,
I hope all of you are finding good birds this week-end for the Great
Backyard Bird Count! I would suspect that with the colder weather in
Northern California, feeders there will be quite busy.

I am looking to purchase the following two books:

Birds of the Indian Ocean Islands by Ian Sinclair / ISBN 1868729567

Mammals of Madagascar by Nick Garbutt / ISBN 0300077513

I have had them on order with Amazon since December, but they have not been
able to fill the order.

If you have either of these books and would be willing to sell them, please
email me.

Good birding!

Hi,

The two books are both available on abebooks.com which is a better source for
hard to find books than Amazon. There are 10 listings for ISBN 1868729567
ranging from $24-$44. The mammale book ISBN 0300077513 is pricey with only two
listings for $72 and $179. There may be additional sources by searching through
bookfinder.com. I use to sell books on ABE and sellers are required to ship
books within 3 days.

   Hi Birders,
I hope all of you are finding good birds this week-end for the Great
Backyard Bird Count!

Randall good question.
Thursday afternoon 2/16/06 Ken Archambault of Berkeley called me to say a
Gyrfalcon has been reported near Bodega Bay.
He left a voice mail it was very brief, not alot of details.
That was the last I have heard.
Did you hear of this sighting also ?
No one reported on line that I know of.

Hi Folks,

I tried Friday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. for the Rock Sandpiper in Santa Cruz, and
failed again (my 2nd attempt). Saturday morning at 10:30 I followed David's
advice, and went during a rising tide i.e. 2 hours after low tide, and
immediately had the bird as soon as I walked up to the cliff, at Almar Street
and West Cliff Drive. It was in a mixed flock of Surfbirds and Black
Turnstones. Thanks also to Kyri, Ruth, and Jennifer. Sibley has the Rock
Sandpiper too dark, and too fat & dumpy. The illustration in Geographic has it
just right for the winter plumage, and fortuitously the bird is right under
Surfbird on the same page, giving a good size comparison.
Saturday afternoon halfway between this intersection and Natural Bridges State
Park I had a loon that looked more like an Arctic than a Pacific (bigger than
the Pacific, noticeable white on the side, no chin strap), but I couldn't
photograph it. There were a 'good' Pacific Loon, a Common Loon, and a Sea Otter
here, too.

Friday morning while driving north on the 5 in Kern County I had a Swainson's
Hawk where the 5 crosses the 41. Saturday afternoon I had one where the 152
crosses the 5, and another at the first rest stop due south of that
intersection.

Also Friday morning while on the 5 in Kern County I saw what were most likely 3
Tundra Swans in the lakes that are right off the 5 (west of it), a few miles
north of the 5/99 split, but I was doing 80 mph (and getting passed by everybody
else, who was doing 100).

Friday mid day while driving on the 152 from the 5 to Santa Cruz, I stopped at
Mount Diablo County Park. There were so many Varied Thrushes that they were on
all sides of my car. There were literally 100 Varied Thrushes all around me. I
don’t know why the various field guides all neglect the white corner tail spots
on Varied Thrush. None of them mention it; they are barely visible in Peterson,
and not at all in Geographic or Sibley.

As for the Slay-backed Gull(s): next winter I am going to take 3 weekdays off to
just sit there all day long at Venice State Beach, with a lawn chair, and a pile
of field guides and articles.

The site limits the number of hits per hour, so if it
shuts down, wait an hour and try again. Comments on
the bird's identity are welcome.

The gull was seen by several individuals over the
weekend (and videotaped by Les and Cindy Lieurance, I
just learned), but was not seen for a month despite
numerous searches since it was first found on 16
January (see link in above websites to original
photos), so relocating it may be very difficult (the
movements of gulls on the lake are hard to predict).
Directions to this and other Lake County rarities have

Floyd,

That bird certainly fits the notion of "Kumlien's Gull". We've had some birds
like that here in Yolo Co. over the years as well. It's certainly not pure
Thayer's, of course. Many now consider "Kumlien's" to be a hybrid swarm between
pure Thayer's and pure glaucoides Iceland Gull (which means that virtually all
"Iceland Gulls" in the US are hybrids). It also means that anything not pure
Thayer's is "Kumlien's", somewhere on the cline between Thayer's and pure
Iceland. For an illustration of these viewpoints, see my figures at

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Canopy/6181/kuml3.htm

I believe the CBRC has only accepted two Iceland Gulls, and they appear to be
pure glaucoides (the Otay bird at
http://www.wfo-cbrc.org/cbrc/photos/icgu2.html; and the adult bird from Bodega
). A photo of the latter and a discussion by the CBRC of kumliens and Iceland
is in the 1999 report at http://www.wfo-cbrc.org/cbrc/98report/98report.pdf.

Very pretty bird, by the way!

Hello all-

My wife (a tolerant non-birder) and I will be visiting the Bay Area/Yosemite
from March 11th-19th. Our itinery is as follows:
March 11th - arrive late San Francisco
March 12-13 - Inverness (Point Reyes)
   March 14-16 - Yosemite area
   March 17-18 - San Francisco
   March 19th - depart

I am looking for any local information for the birds on my list. I have
Kemper's Birding Northern California guide. Below is my list with some specific
questions in regard to some species. I am sending this message to multiple bird
groups, so I realize some birds won't be present in each group's area.
Blue Grouse - accessible site in March?
   Mountain Quail
Rock Sandpiper - any Point Reyes sites or Bodega Bay only?
   Thayer's Gull - Point Reyes sightings/Gull areas?
   Short-eared Owl
Great Gray Owl - Accessible Yosemite meadows (Wawona, Chevron?); winter vs
breeding areas
Spotted Owl - Tomales Bay State Park traditional site
   Northern Pygmy-Owl
   Northern Saw-whet Owl
   White-headed Woodpecker
   Lewis' Woodpecker
   Williamson's Sapsucker - lower elevations/Yosemite?
   Red-breasted Sapsucker
   Nuttall's Woodpecker
Black-backed Woodpecker - recent burned over areas?
   Pacific-slope Flycatcher - too early?
   Cassin's Vireo - too early?
   Hutton's Vireo
Yellow-billed Magpie - Central Valley locations between Bay area and Yosemite
   Oak Titmouse
   Hermit Warbler - wintering sites?
Sage Sparrow - any Point Reyes locations
Lapland Longspurs - Point Reyes sightings?
   Tricolored Blackbird
   Lawrence's Goldfinch

For some species (Great Gray Owl/Spotted Owl in particular), I realize the
sensitive nature of these birds, especially on the breeding grounds. I
certainly understand if some are unwilling to provide info about them. However,
if you trust me with it, I will use it wisely and ethically. Thanks for your
time and responses. This is one of the few areas of the country that I have
never visited/birded. For anyone planning a trip to Central Florida, I would be
pleased to return the favor.

   Regards,
   Andy Prather

Hi,

On Feb 24th at 1PM, I stopped by McSwain Forebay and
saw at least 7 Cliff Swallows inspecting last year's
mud nests on the underside of the bridge. Anybody
else seeing early Cliff Swallows? There were also at
least 5 Tree Swallows inspecting the mud nests. I
wonder if the mud nests would be suitable for the Tree
Swallows except that the Cliff Swallows out compete
them due to their size. Also, an adult Bald Eagle
flew over and there were a pair of Ospreys present. 2
Herring Gulls, an adult and a 1st year, were sitting
on the water. 7 White-throated Swifts flew over
chattering.

At noon on the same day, at the corner of Hornitos Rd
and Slate Gulch Rd I saw a Ferruginous Hawk. And
there was another Ferruginous Hawk west of Hornitos Rd
just across the county line in Merced Co.

Good birding,
Jim
