Birders,

The FALCATED DUCK was still present at Colusa NWR this afternoon. I
left the bird around 4PM. At least two EURASIAN WIGEON were also
present.

A poor photo of the FADU can be seen here:

Yesterday, the GRAY HAWK was along the railway west of Salt in Carpinteria at
about 10:30 (thanks to Al DeMartini for spotting it) and the GRACE’S WARBLER
was in the pines at the north end of Bella Vista Open Space in Goleta at 11:20.

For those who have not yet made it up there, the Falcated Duck was very
cooperative this morning, coming fairly close to the platform at Colusa NWR
and looking most spectacular in perfect light...courting and displaying for
the benefit of both female and male wigeon.

Of other nearby interest, a Eurasian Wigeon was on the north side of
Norman Rd/County Rd 68 just west of the Glenn/Colusa border (in Glenn County) in
the midst of a couple thousand Snow (and Ross's) Geese (one "Blue" Snow in
the mix).

Bella Vista Open Space is a very small city park in Goleta. Google knows it
as Bella Vista Park, eBird as Bella Vista OSP. Within the park, the bird
calls often and seems to prefer the pines but can be very hard to find.

Hi all.

My original message was sent from my iPhone and was brief as I wanted to get the
word out as quickly as possible.

I was leading a bird walk for Whalewatch naturalists and first spotted the bird
at approximately 09:15; we watched it for approximately 20 minutes before moving
on. During this time, the bird moved several times along the entire length of
the outer beach. When I returned at approximately 12:30, the group of birders
looking for the bird was out of sight from the beach along the rocky shore on
the bottom of the cliffs to the west of the beach. Just as I entered the fenced
in trail to the tidepool area, the wagtail returned from around the bend, rested
briefly on the rocks at the edge of the sand and then flew onto the sandy beach
where it foraged and changed location a few times. It was very conspicuous while
flying. I don't know when it was last seen.

The California Bird Records Committee website lists 12 records for White Wagtail
in the state,
http://www.californiabirds.org/mydb.asp?species=white+wagtail&partial=on&sort=da\
te&STARTDATE=&ENDDATE=&county= . The last occurance was in Santa Maria, Santa
Barbara County, December 2009/January 2010. The only previous record for Los
Angeles County is from Long Beach and is also the longest stay with 75 days from
11/04/1982 to 01/18/1983.

Cabrillo Beach is in San Pedro, in far southern Los Angeles County,
https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF-8&q=cabrillo+marine+aquarium&fb=1&g\
l=us&hq=cabrillo+marine+aquarium&hnear=cabrillo+marine+aquarium&cid=0,0,26032782\
61867397232&ei=0PfDUO2hCoKxywGC-YDwBQ&ved=0CKYBEPwSMAA . From the the end of the
110 freeway turn left (south) on Gaffey Street; after 25 blocks turn left on
22nd Street; after two blocks turn right on Pacific Avenue; at the first
stoplight turn left on Stephen M. White Drive and the entrance to Cabrillo Beach
will be on your left. You can park outside and walk in to avoid the parking fee
but it can be crowded on weekends. The outer beach is on your right as you pass
the entrance booths.

There was some nice camera equipment on the beach today; good photos should be
available soon. Dinuk Magammana has some outstanding ones at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nature_and_animals/8255222067/in/photostream/ .

Take care,

Bernardo

Referencing White Wagtail records in California accepted by the California
Bird Records Committee and length of stay. Bernardo Alps found 12 such
records from the California Bird Records Committee website (which I haven't
duplicated) but the "Rare Birds of California" book by Hamilton, Patten and
Erickson of the Bird Records Committee shows 26 accepted records as of the
copyright of the book of 2007. Included within those records are sightings
of Black-backed Wagtails that are now considered to be part of the White
Wagtail species. Also stated by Bernardo on his recent Calbirds post is
that the longest stay for the species in California was 75 days, but the
White (Black-backed) Wagtail seen in Orange County in 1996 stayed for 79
days.

both species under White Wagtail. There is a disclaimer that "certain pre-1997

Does anyone know the actual number of White Wagtail records? From the data

Bernardo,

The answer is YES - 27.

Rare Birds of California (Hamilton et al 2007) lists 26 CBRC endorsed
records (Rare Birds of California was published after the AOU "lumped" the
Black-backed and White Wagtails). The Table of Records updated through 31
October 2012 (see the CBRC website) lists one additional record. As such,
the CBRC has endorsed 27 records.

In cases like this, where the exact number of records for any given species
is required, I recommend using the number listed in Rare Birds of
California, the additional number listed in the updated Table of Records at
the CBRC website, and any very recent records a query of the CBRC DataBase
may show.

Hi,

Although I ultimately do NOT know, I conclude the
following based on my reading and understanding
of the last sentence in Bernardo's recent email.

I believe Bernardo is seeking the answer to the following question.

Of the 27 accepted California White Wagtail
records, how many were of the subspecies ocularis
and how many of the black-backed subspecies lugens?

Regardless, Continued Happy & Productive Birding!

The Gray Hawk sat for photos this morning, Sunday at 9am on the chain link fence
across from the purple Salt building @ 3717 Santa Claus Lane (for anyone using
a vehicle Nav system like a Garmin that prefers a street address). Then it
landed on the back corner of the Salt Bldg.

At 1:40 Joanne Katanic and I saw the gray hawk on the Carpenteria Rd. exit sign
just opposite the Salt Building.

It's still here -- 10:45 - 11:30 -- mainly in the area near the bluffs and
the nearby lifeguard station.

Hi Birders

Christopher Taylor, Nick, and I took our last look at the FALCATED DUCK at
Colusa NWR at around 2:00pm today. We watched this impressive-looking duck from
the observation platform. We also saw it yesterday morning. Great birding in the
area!

Happy Birding!

good number of free spaces on the road near the entrance to the paid lot Just
south of the entrance to the paid lot, a break in the trees gives a view of the
sandy beach from the sidewalk above, and you can scan for birders on the beach.
> Find the driveway-width dirt path south of the entrance to the paid lot, and
walk downhill 1 minute to the beach.

on Pacific. It dead ends at an overlook/mini park where you can take in the
sweeping view.
> The Wagtail spent most of the time Sunday am on the sandy beach well above the
high tide line catching insects amidst patches of kelp and other debris.
Occasionally it flew to the rocks at Pt Fermin but not for long.

To contribute to the already excellent documentation of the WHITE
WAGTAIL in San Pedro, here are photos/video from this afternoon at
Cabrillo Beach. He spent most of his time foraging between the sandy
beach and rocks - at many times very close to a nearby Say's Phoebe and
Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Just finished a Lomaxian day in southern CA and had five county birds while
birding four counties....see recent photos gallery on my website (my Virginia's
Warbler in LA photo didn't turn out well, so left it off).

Also saw the Williamson's Sapsucker in San Luis Obispo County on Saturday
morning, but it was too foggy for photography.

Also, there is space left for the Gull ID workshop that Todd Easterla and I are
teaching on Jan 12-13th.

Apologies if I have missed all of the discussion on this bird but the
extensive yellow at the base of the lower mandible is not a feature I have
noticed on first-winter White Wagtails before, certainly not those that occur
regularly in West and NW Europe. Intriguing

Superb photos Christopher

Best wishes

I think Lee was speaking specifically about the lower madible gape on HY
birds. The speculation is it's either M.a. ocularis or M.a. lugens. I've
photographed HY M.a. lugens in Japan in Dec/Jan that are very similar to
our bird here in San Pedro - but not quite as distinct wingbars as our
bird.

White Wags in UK are typically M.a. yarrellii while the ones in the rest
of Western Europe are the nominate M.a. alba

The White Wagtails I've seen in Europe look a bit different from the one at
Cabrillo Beach, but if a subspecies can be determined, I'm guessing that this
one would differ from the Euro birds.
