This is a very belated posting of a second hand report. On Saturday 3/20
Jim Livaudias saw a male BAIKAL TEAL at Lower Klamath Refuge. Unfortunately
he is not on OBOL and I just returned to get the message and post it.
The bird was a male in full breeding plumage. There were no rings or bands
on the legs, which were visible as it stood on the reeds at the edge of the
open water. Directions to the site are as follows:
Go into the refuge from the main entrance off of Stateline Road. Drive
exactly 4 miles bearing left on the main road at every intersection. You
will reach a lone tree. The bird was just past the tree. 7 hours of
searching on Sunday failed to relocate the bird.
Jim is a top notch birder with international experience. I have no doubt
that this is what he saw. Unfortunately it flew off as he was getting his
camera in position, only flying about 40 yds back into the tules but it
never came out again.
I am sure there will be a lot of debate about captive vs wild. All he can
say is that the bird was not banded or pinioned.
