The CAE Defense Fund listserv provides news and information for supporters of Dr. Steven Kurtz via low-frequency email updates and Action Alerts. The CAE Defense Fund was established in 2004 to raise public and financial support for Dr. Kurtz, founding member of the award-winning Critical Art Ensemble. In May 2004, Kurtz was illegally detained and accused by the US government of "bioterrorism," and later charged with mail and wire fraud -- charges which carry a possible sentence of 20 years in prison under the USA PATRIOT Act. Also charged was Kurtz's friend and colleague, Dr. Robert Ferrell. From that point the CAE Defense Fund worked to raise public and financial support for both men, until serious illness forced Ferrell to plead to lesser charges in October 2007.

On April 21, 2008, federal judge Richard J. Arcara dismissed the government's entire indictment against Kurtz, a victory in the struggle to safeguard our fundamental rights made possible by the activism of thousands of people.

Steve Kurtz still needs your support. Our next step is to attempt to recover the professional and personal belongings seized by the FBI in its 2004 raid on his home.
