Dear Friends of Buy Nothing Day,
November 29 was Buy Nothing Day in Japan. Thank you all
for making this
year's BND a success again!
>From Hokkaido to Okinawa, from Kyoto to Guam, happy
pranksters confronted
Japanese shoppers with the idea that less (shopping) can
be more (fun).
Several shops, online and off held a 'sell-nothing day'
(=mu-bai-day, same
prononciation as 'mu-bai-day'=buy nothing day). Bloggers
and citizens
journalists spread the word as did several NGOs and
socially responsible
businesses through their mailing lists. The Japan Times,
the Hokkaido
Shinbun, and several smaller publications reported.
Artists and designers
created new posters, buttons and videos. A particularly
clever idea was a
trick to turn the shopping bag of 'Muji' (the interior
goods brand whose
name translates to 'No Brand') in to 'Mu-bai-day' (Buy
Nothing Day).
Socially conscious businesses donated food to those for
whom every day is
buy nothing day, homeless people. And hundreds, perhaps
thousands of people
around the country spent the day the way it was meant to
be: Doing nothing
but enjoying a slow life, sleeping, hanging out with
friends and family...
