Hi ya all!

Sob! Still no Bilko on the BBC! The way things are going, I may have to organise
my own Bring Back Bilko campaign. However, I do know the Beeb have now completed
the screening rights, so no need to worry just yet!

Just to let you know I've emailed TVLand using my Yahoo address, and will
continue to do so over the next few weeks. I'd love one of those Paul Ford
magnets...hint, hint!!

Speaking of Paul, I was all set to snap up a superb, beautifully signed 10x8
pose in the Colonel's office on eBay, but someone beat me to it, and it was too
late to post another bid! Totally gutted! Paul's photo would have looked
smashing next to Phil's! Perhaps next time!

Keep up the good work!

Hi, Phil admirers the world over!

Just to echo Kathleen's and Jake's thoughts regarding Phil's passing to that
Great Motor Pool in the Sky. It's hard to believe that 14 years have elasped,
and although I pen this scribe with a heavy heart, we must take comfort in the
fact that Phil has gone onto a better life. And we must not be too sad. Phil was
a unique and loving individual and I don't think he'd approve of this sadness on
this particularly sad day. I think Phil would want us to celebrate the fact that
he bought countless hours of pleasure to millions of people across the world.
So, spare a thought for Phil on this day, then switch on the video, and watch
your favourite episode of The Phil Silvers Show.

I'll leave the final words to our much missed hero. This small excerpt from an
BBC interview recorded 1-3 October 1985 captures perfectly the warmth and love
generated by a true gentleman. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Mr Phil
Silvers...

Magnus Magnusson: "In the studio, here at Pebble Mill at One there are a group
of members of your fan club celebrating Sgt Bilko. Do you have a message for
them, and for your fans throughout Britain?"
Phil: "I, er... it is my firm wish that I continue to have, or rather that I
continue to deserve their support and their love...I couldn't be more pleased".

Phil Silvers
Born:
11 May 1911
Died:
1 November 1985.
Alive in our hearts forever.

Looking forward to celebrating the New Millenium with Phil's Star, in a galaxy
of stars... shining the brightest!

HiYas
Let's think of Phil Silvers on November 1st, the 14th anniversary
of his passing. And how nice that in the late 20th century there
are so many ways for his fans to be in instant contact with each other.

I put up an image from CHiPs... 4-5 delightful minutes of Phil.

Hi ya all!

Wow... have I been busy, busy, busy! Thanks for all the Phil goodies, Dave! I
especially like the portrait from 40 Pounds of Trouble and the studio still of
Phil with hair! Phil always looks so smart! I always try to emulate his style,
whether I'm going out to work or just socialising! I also liked your Halloween
special Kathleen...oh, how I chuckled at Herbie's "Don't freeze on me now,
Fender!" and Phil's ghoulish makeup! I hope everyone has a scary Halloween, this
coming Sunday!

We're still plugging away, trying to secure more TV appearances to promote the
life and work of Phil Silvers. No secure offers just yet, but we live in hope!
My big move to the States is static at the moment. I'm waiting for confirmation
regarding a date for the Star Ceremony, as my initial visitors visa will only
last six months, and I'm going to need ample time to book both sides of that
date. This will give me plenty of time to socialise with all my new American
buddies, secure a full-time job and hopefully apply for citizenship! Phew! All
I've got to do now is save some greenbacks! My air fare is sorted, all I need is
some spending money. Do any of you guys play... what's it called....packer....
ah, yes... poker!! Beware, I've learnt the Bilko shuffle, and I've got luminous
dice!

How are the TVLand screenings going? Have they released any viewing figures, as
this will normally secure the fate of any future screenings. I know when BBC2
screened the series in the mid-1980's, the show attracted over 2 million viewers
which was very favourable when today the popular Australian soap Neighbours
(also screened by the Beeb) only attracts 9 million! Remember, Neighbours is
screened in a regular timeslot, every day. The Phil Silvers Show, because it is
an old show is dotted all over the TV schedules. I believe if the show was given
a regular weekly timeslot, we would see those viewing figures double with
comparative ease....! All we need to do is convince those stubborn TV execs....

A quick reminder for Phil's UK fans... don't forget Bilko this Saturday at 11.50
am, BBC2. It's the postponed first season episode War Games. Let's all keep
those viewing figures up!

Dis..missed!!

Keeping the memory of Phil alive

Hi Phil fans,

Hold the front page! The Phil Silvers Show returns to BBC2 this coming Saturday
30 October, at 11.50am! Although it's the only episode in this weeks schedules,
the BBC have kept to their word and have decided to screen the postponed episode
War Games, which was cancelled on 11 October.

Sadly, no other episodes have been scheduled, but I have made contact with an
artist who was commissioned to paint the original covers to the two 1950's Bilko
annuals, and I'm bidding for something rather special on eBay!
Look out for full reports very soon...!

   Hi Guys and Gals!

I've just seen the scan for the Paul Ford magnet...isn't it superb! I've been
bidding for quite a few original 1950's ads, and I have to say the Smirnoff ads
are my faves! I'm waiting for one to arrive which features Phil holding an
armful of Smirnoff boxes, whilst balancing one on his head! I have also bid on a
Consolidated ad, again with Phil stuffing a sock full of American dollars!
That's our Phil! His cheeky expression says it all!! eBay currently have over
120 Phil items... most definitely worth a look!

We enjoyed watching Phil's 1968 movie, Buona, Sera Mrs Campbell last week.
Phil gave a lovely warm and subtle performance which constrasted nicely with
Telly Savalas' portrayal. A great movie which should be in everyone's
collection!

Coming soon... news on the return of The Phil Silvers Show to BBC2... watch

Howdy Phil fans!

Kathleen and Steve spent a very enjoyable evening last Sunday chatting about
Phil on The Phil Silvers Platoon. It's a great platform for finding out more
about Phil, and anybody who has access to the Internet can join as a guest!
Believe me, it's great fun. We will organise another chat for November, so
please bookmark it and give it a whirl!!

Sob... bad news for Phil fans residing in the UK. We have no schedules for The
Phil Silvers Show week commencing 23 October. I am in constant contact with the
Beeb, and as soon as they schedule some more episodes I will inform everyone via
Onelist! I had a very interesting conversation with a guy from Birmingham. He is
an avid comic collecter and Phil Silvers' fan, and has in his collection... wait
for it...two Bilko annuals, fourteen Bilko comics and seven Doberman comics!!! I
can't talk, my mouth is watering! Seriously, it's a fantastic collection, worth
quite a few pennies and worthy of a full report on the British Phil Silvers
Community!

Watch this space...!
Please report any Phil sightings...

Hi Phil Fans!

Mick and myself hope our American chums are enjoying the current screenings of
The Phil Silvers Show. Remember, to order to secure future transmissions you
need to push those phone calls, letters and emails! It certainly worked for us,
as we now have a very good relationship with the BBC.

For Phil's UK fans please bookmark Monday 18 October, as the TV Networks will be
screening one of Phil's feature films and another episode of Bilko! Details as
follows:

Channel 5: 3.30-5.30pm: BUONA SERA, MRS CAMPBELL. 1968, Comedy Drama starring
Gina Lollobrigida, Phil Silvers, Shelley Winters, Peter Lawford and Telly
Savalas. Directed by Melvin Frank. This is indeed a treat for Phil fans, as this
movie has been absent from British screens for the last 14 years! Get yer video

BBC2: 12.00-12.25am: THE PHIL SILVERS SHOW. BBC2 get back on track with the
classic Bilko in Wall Street written by Nat Hiken and Tony Webster. Guest
starring Edwin Phillips and Moreton L Stevens. (episode aka Butterworth,
Butterworth and Butterworth.)

We're still waiting to hear from the BBC regarding a date for the postponed
episode War Games. Hopefully, we should be able to post some details by the
weekend!

Howdy Phil fans!

The Society has just received news from the BBC that the scheduled episode of
The Phil Silvers Show has been cancelled. The episode in question, War Games was
due to be screened this afternoon at 2.25pm, but has been postponed to a later
date.

The reason for the cancellation is due to a special announcement from the
Transport Minister regarding the future safety of our rail system after last
week's appalling train crash at Paddington. I'm sure all of Phil's fans
understand why the show was pulled, and our heartfelt feelings go out to all
those people who have lost loved ones in this accident which could have so
easily been avoided.

The BBC has promised to reschedule the episode which I will announce on the
British Phil Silvers Community.

Thanks for listening,
Your Phil Pals,

Steve & Mick.

Howdy Phil fans the world over!

Wow....what an exhaustive week! Mick travelled down to Coventry so we could film
a special feature on Phil's Star on the Walk of Fame for the BBC. We all had a
swell time and the reporter John Yates had really done his homework! We even
managed to screen Phil's favourite episode of Bilko, The Court Martial which we
all enjoyed immensely, including the cameraman! I have a good quality copy
taped, and John has promised to send a copy of the master tape, including all
our out takes and bloopers which should be good for a laugh!

The following morning I was a guest on the Stuart Linell Breakfast Show, and
again the main subject of conversation was Phil and his award on Hollywood
Boulevard next year. This interview was a total delight, and ran for about six
or seven minutes, and could have gone on longer had it not been for time
constraints! Stuart, who is a life long Phil Silvers fan has asked me to keep
him updated as regards the date for Phil's Star, and has hinted he would like to
cover the story as it unfolds! Again, I have requested a master tape and hope to
produce a Phil Silvers compilation, from the Society's launch way back in 1985
to the present day....watch this space!

However, I'm afraid it's not all good news. My second interview for the Tony and
Julie Late Show on BBC Radio WM was a complete disaster. The husband and wife
team initially contacted me, saying they wanted to talk about Phil Silvers'
legacy. But when I was finally linked to the Birmingham studios, I was subjected
to a torrent of sarcastic and snidey remarks against the Society, and more
upsetting against Phil himself. Hurtful comments like, Bilko isn't funny, and
Phil Silvers was just a plain, run of the mill comedian and did he do anything
else apart from Bilko etc....I'm sure you get the picture. I can tell you I
nearly got up and left, but decided for Phil's sake to kerb my tongue and fight
fire with fire! I'm very pleased to say I won in the end, but it was a
horrendous experience. Had I been in the same studio as the loathsome duo, I
would have got up and smacked Tony right in the kisser! John Yates and Stuart
Linell were professional and respectful of Phil Silvers, Tony and Julie were
amaturish, downright rude, and a total embarrassment to BBC Radio WM.....I rest
my case!

I hope our American friends are enjoying the reruns of The Phil Silvers Show.
Keep plugging for it's return full-time, it deserves to be seen by as many fans
as possible! Here in England we are down to one episode a week, but I've heard
rumours that BBC2 will be bringing back the popular double bills very soon.....

Keeping the memory of Phil alive,
Your Phil Pals,

Steve & Mick

Wednesday this week! I'll keep everybody posted via the British Phil Silvers

Hi there!

I just got a chance to read my email, and got yours about Phil's
star. This is so amazing. It's so great to hear that he's finally
getting one. I would like to get the chance to see you on the BBC, but
seeing as I live in America, I have no chance of being able to. If
there's any way I could get a copy of it, I'd love to find out how. I'd
also love to find out about any pictures I coyuld get when the press

and any of the stars from the show. Thanks so much for contacting me.

Who knew after 14 years of trying to get Phil a star you guys would be the

A big thank you to everybody who has signed up to The British Phil Silvers
Appreciation Society. I'm very impressed, in just over a week the Society has
enlisted 13 new recruits! Don't forget to spread the word, and bolster
membership figures even further!

With no screenings of The Phil Silvers Show planned next week, Mick and myself
are keeping busy planning our television appearance for the BBC, to promote the
memory of Phil Silvers, and talk about his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
So far, we've managed to contact the remaining platoon members and production
staff, all of whom are absolutely delighted that Phil is at last receiving the
recognition he so richly deserves. For your information here is the list of
people we've managed to contact:

Allan Melvin - Corporal Steve Henshaw
Mickey Freeman - Private Fielding Zimmerman
   Maurice Brenner - Private Fleischman
   Tige Andrews - Private Gander
   Nick Saunders - Captain Barker
   Edward J Montagne - Producer
   Barry Blitzer - Writer
   Terry Ryan - Writer

Obviously, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and there are still many more
people we need to contact. Please feel free to contribute any suggestions. It is
our intention to invite as many of Phil's friends and work colleagues as
possible. We have had to wait an agonising 14 years for Phil to be awarded a
Star. We must grab this opportunity with both hands, and make sure Phil's Star
Ceremony is the biggest and best Hollywood has ever seen!

Keeping the memory of Phil alive,

   Steve & Mick.

Hi ya all!

Steve reporting in to let you know Kathleen, Dave and myself had a lot of fun
last Saturday, chatting the night away talking about our beloved Phil. Sadly,
after promoting the event for the last three weeks, we had only one guest log
in, ( and not being a Phil fan left rather quickly!) Perhaps Saturday is the
wrong day of the week, since most people tend to spend the night socialising.
Kathleen has decided to move the chat to a Sunday night, and if anyone has any
suggestions, as regards future dates, please feel free to email us!

Please bookmark the next chat!
SUNDAY 10 OCTOBER, 1999
3pm "Sumter, Georgia" Time
Noon Camp Fremont Time
8pm Jolly U.K. Bilkolandia Time

We're looking forward to welcoming a full platoon! It's gonna be fun, fun,
fun!!!

Today, 20 September 1999 is a very special day in the hearts of Phil Silvers
fans worldwide! Exactly 44 years ago to the day, You'll Never Get Rich made it's
debut on CBS Television! Phil made his first official appearance as Master
Sergeant Ernie Bilko in the episode NEW RECRUITS, and created an unforgettable
comedy character which has influenced a plethora of television comedies to this
very day.....

Three cheers for Phil...all together now...hip, hip, HOORAY!!!
Pay tribute to Phil and watch a BILKO this evening!

Your Phil Pals,

Steve & Mick.

     Howdy Phil fans!

I've just received confirmation from the BBC that they want to do a special
feature on Phil Silvers for the Midlands Today programme, possibly within the
next two weeks! Again, this is an excellent opportunity to promote the Society,
Phil's Star on the Walk of Fame and our documentary! Mick is hoping to join me
at my Coventry base, and bring part of his collection with him. I will obviously
record the whole event, and bring extra copies with me when I relocate! It's
very reassuring to know that the BBC still appreciate The Phil Silvers Show, and
I believe they will be incorporating footage from our 1985 appearance on Pebble
Mill at One, when Phil recorded that very special message for us! I'll never
forget that day, when Magnus Magnusson told Phil he was interviewing us at that
very moment. Phil paused and said,"Oh, do you.....give them a warm hug from
me...." I shall never forget that moment, it was the best day of my life,
without a doubt! We felt so proud and joyous, after all the negative newspaper
reports, that Phil was so happy and contented with his life!

More news as it breaks Phil fans.....

     Your Phil Buddies,

     Steve & Mick

Howdy Phil fans....

The BBC have just announced schedules for 18-24 September, and I'm afraid to say
Bilko is in short supply! Schedules as follows:

Monday 20 September 11.05-11.30am: WEEKEND COLONEL. As you know BBC2 had been
screening the series in chronological order, so why they've jumped to the final
episode of the 4th season is quite puzzling...watch this space for more
details...
Thursday 23 September 2.00-2.25pm: THE RECRUITING SERGEANT. It looks like we're
back on schedule, as this episode follows on from last weeks episode THE
PHYSICAL CHECK-UP. But where, oh where are our double Bilkos'...?
Friday 24 September 11.10-11.35am: HAIR. Yes, we're definitely back on schedule
with another one of my faves from the first season!

I must admit it's a little disappointing to receive only three episodes in a
week, when we've grown accustomed to ten!! Hopefully, BBC2 will bring back the
highly successful double bills...watch this space!

Your Phil Pals,

Steve & Mick

Dear Phil Chaps!
I'm happy to be on board with you for our worldwide lovefest for all
things Phil Silvers. I probably have been in touch with most of you
but allow me to introduce myself again just in case you've never run across
"Sgt. Bilko's Barracks"...

My name is Kathleen O'Quinn Jacobs and I'm 49 years old ... I had seen
The Phil Silvers Show in the 1950s before my dad moved us to Puerto Rico
in December 1958.
I probably saw Phil Silvers next in 40 Pounds of Trouble and Mad, Mad...
I never saw TPSS again until December 1996. Imagine the joy of discovery as a
full grown person! Bilko & Company was "no-sit down" comedy for my husband
Jake and me (as opposed to sitdowncom!). No matter what we just couldn't
manage to stay seated, with laughter reflexes kicking in!

One connection back to my childhood was remembering that I had combined
my coins with my sister's (she was 3 years younger). When my dad found
out about this he gave me a stern lecture in capitalism. It was strictly
a no-no to do such a thing! I can only guess where I got the idea of
a joint fund!

Anyway, as soon as I started watching the show I found Mohan's delightful
and definitive site. It took me 6 months to get all the episodes on tape and
then put up my first pages devoted to Phil Silvers. I have strived to keep the
web site in spirit with what Phil Silvers would've liked.
While I never met or spoke with him, I did live in Los Angeles 1976-1984
and even worked with Flip Wilson for 3 days! (Phil appeared on his show as you
know.)

My husband Jake has had a longterm parttime job at the Johnny Mercer
Archive at Georgia State University. Johnny wrote the music to Top Banana.

That's a few notes for now. I'm always happy to hear from fans with comments,
ideas, even complaints. There are lots of outlets now for "Phil Silvers Chat",
thanks to Paul Moshay and the relatively new Delphi Forums "Phil Silvers
Platoon." The next chat is scheduled for next Saturday,
9/18 3pm Eastern, 8pm UK BilkoLandia!

I'm glad you still have access to our fave show on BBC... TPSS was just
cancelled in Canada and we're fighting to get it back on the schedule in the
USA.

My congratulations to Mick & Steve and all the fans who have kept Phil's
memory alive in the media and in our hearts.

"Keepin' in Step"
Kathleen

   Howdy Phil fans!

I had the pleasure of speaking to writer Barry Blitzer and producer Edward J
Montagne last night. They are in very good health and send their regards! Barry
and Edward are very eager to help with the Phil Silvers documentary, and when I
spoke to Barry he was actually reading a copy of the Society magazine, The Fort
Baxter Journal! He was totally amazed at the amount of research I had done over
the last 14 years, and we enjoyed a very long chat! He also told me Charlotte
Rae was still working, and get this... is related to Nat Hiken! After watching
her performance with Phil in the classic episode The Twitch, she is one lady I
would like to contact and invite to Phil's Star Ceremony! Barry promised to
phone Terry Ryan, to make sure my package arrived safely, and hopefully arrange
an interview when I arrive in the States! I believe Barry and Terry will be
instrumental in helping with the documentary, as their memories of Phil are
still strong and vibrant. And don't forget they penned many of the classic first
season episodes of Bilko! Edward was equally as chatty and informative, and has
agreed to meet us once I've moved from England. I'm sure you'll all agree this
is fantastic news, and another feather in our cap when Phil's big day arrives
next year!

I'm still beavering away with the website...sometimes I really wish I was
computer literate! By the way, a big thank you to everyone who has joined the
BritishPhilSilversAS! It's only been running for a day and I already have 7
members! I experienced a few teething problems but I'm happy to say the
community is now running like a dream...

So far, 1999 has been a fantastic year, not just for me and the Society, but
for Phil Silvers who has made all this possible. I am indeed, very proud and
very happy! Sometimes I get so excited thinking about Phil's Star I have trouble
sleeping....I'm sure you all know what I mean...!

Keeping the memory of Phil alive....forever!

   Your Phil Pals,

   Steve & Mick

   Howdy Phil fans!

More good news from Bilkolandia! The BBC have just confirmed schedules for The
Phil Silvers Show and I'm pleased to annouce another 10 episodes are due to be
screened in a early morning double bill, week commencing 13 September. BBC2 will
air:

   EATING CONTEST/REUNION
   DINNER AT SOWICI'S/ARMY MEMOIRS
MISS AMERICA/THE COURT MARTIAL (aka THE CASE OF HARRY SPEAKUP, and Phil's
favourite episode!)
FURLOUGH IN NEW YORK/THE BIG URANIUM STRIKE
BILKO & THE BEAST/THE PHYSICAL CHECKUP

The BBC seem to be running the series in chronological order, using the
Primetime episode guide, although EATING CONTEST seems to have been added out of
order. According to my information Fred's episode originally aired on 15
November, 1955 placing between MARDI GRAS and CENTENNIAL.

As far as I can tell these episodes are extra screenings, as the new package
negotiated with Viacom doesn't actually start until November, 1999! Three cheers
for the good ole Beeb.....!!!

All in all, another vintage week for Phil fans! Our thanks go to the BBC, who
are at long last treating the series with the respect it so richly deserves...

   Your Phil Pals,

   Steve & Mick.
