I’ve become a fan of Brian Knight, a self-proclaimed stalker if you will. Brian mesmerized me with Feral and I recently delved into his collection of short stories, Dragonfly. Dragonfly consists of 13 shorts, each one different but enigmatic in its own right. I will only mention some of my favorites.
“Lost” is my favorite and it has nothing to do with islands or survivors, but of a father’s love for a daughter and his anguish, guilt and madness upon finding her missing. The ending is gut wrenching and Brian finds your heart and gives it a squeeze. Other favorites include “Muddy Waters” which takes a normal day on the job of an anchorwoman that turns into a nightmare of telltale proportions. “Don’t Toy With Me”, a deeply disturbing story about a woman and her obsession with a toy, or is it not obsession but possession? And the last two stories in the book that are intertwined, “Rain” and “Dragonfly”. Stories of revenge, of the desire to be recognized, even in death.
Brian writes with richness and an eye for detail not seen in many authors. Brian is great at getting the reader to become one with the story. Oh how I'd love to be a fly on his wall while he was writing to see a master at work. But that’s what makes me the stalker…. anyone know his address?
