São Paulo Graffiti Tour: osgemeos - Their lyrical, surrealist and
playful graffiti began popping up around their stomping grounds,
Cambuci, a São Paulo working class enclave dotted with cottage
industries near downtown, in the late 1980s. Now identical twins
Otávio and Gustavo (osgemeos, literally "thetwins") travel the
world, shapeshifting from outsider graffiti "writers" to insider
gallery and museum artists - and back. A "clean-up" campaign by the
City of São Paulo is destroying many of the classic graffiti murals
that have dotted the city for years. But if you hurry you may be
able to catch some of osgemeos world-class street art. Read more:

National Institute for Research in the Amazon (INPA) - Located in
the Brazilian rainforest city of Manaus, National Institute for
Research in the Amazon (INPA) was hailed by the World Bank as one
of "the two most important science centers in the Amazon," along
with the Emílio Goeldi Museum of Pará in Belém. Visitors to Manaus,
the capital of Amazonas state, who cannot take the time to get out
into the rainforest should visit the INPA forest or "bosque," which
is located in town and open to the pubic. Here's an interview with
INPA Director Adalberto Val:

Acquisitions, Investments and Joint Ventures – a new column from the
series Order and Progress: Law, Finance and Business in Brazil by
Robert Eugene DiPaolo: "In previous columns we have focused on
establishing and registering a new company in Brazil, as well as
some of the challenges related to doing business there. These prior
columns have mainly focused on the concerns of the individual
investor or business person planning to invest or do business in
Brazil. In this column we are going to shift gears somewhat and
focus on the concerns of the foreign company that plans to acquire,
invest in, or enter into a joint-venture with a Brazilian company."

IN MEMORIAM
We've received several inquiries about our lapse in sending out
BrazilMax OnTime. There's a good reason for the delay: when the last
update was sent out, this was a mom-and-pop operation. Now it is
just Pop. On July 8, Maruska Freire Rameck, sales director and wife
of founding editor Bill Hinchberger, died of cancer. Life since has
been crazy. We apologize for any inconvenience. Those who read
Portuguese can check out a new blog featuring the "crônicas" that
Maruska used to send to friends: http://maruskablog.wordpress.com/

Lajedo do Pai Mateus: Join Film Crews in the Backlands of Paraíba -
The Cariri region's awe-inspiring landscape, strewn with granite
boulders, is compared to Australia's Devils Marbles, Namibia's Erongo
Mountains and Algeria's Hoggar Mountains. It culminates in the Lajedo
do Pai Mateus, an upside-down bowl topped by a rock called "the
helmet." Cariri is also home to some of Brazil's most important
archeological artifacts. One can almost imagine the legendary bandits
of the Brazilian northeast roaming these ranges – as they have many
times on the big screen. Indeed the area has become increasingly
popular with film location scouts. Read more:

Hering Harmonicas: Building a Better Harmonica in Brazil - The

little since Alredo Hering founded the business in 1923 in Blumenau,

changed dramatically – using the Internet to reach a geographically

El Sur Travel Guide to South America – Not exactly news, since the
post was made nearly two years ago, but it was only recently brought
to our attention: "One of the best sites that I've seen on Brazil is
BrazilMax, which calls itself the `hip gringo guide to Brazil'. It
has a very nice design and features some of the best articles that
I've read on Brazil. Now in its fifth year, BrazilMax is the
brainchild of Bill Hinchberger, a native of California who has lived
in Brazil since 1986. Unlike most travel sites, BrazilMax is more
like a magazine, which reflects Hinchberger's background as a
journalist. I look at a lot of travel sites and I don't find that
many that I really like but BrazilMax is certainly one that I highly
recommend, a must-read if you're going to Brazil." Check it out:

BRAZILMAX NEWS 1: World Tourism Forum to Feature Presentation by
BrazilMax.com Founding Editor
Bill Hinchberger, founding editor of BrazilMax.com, is scheduled to
speak at the annual summit of the World Tourism Forum for Peace and
Sustainable Development in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on Friday, December 1.
Hinchberger will take part in a panel on the media and tourism that
begins at 3:30 p.m. He will be joined by Caco de Paula of the Editora
Abril, Laura Piñonez of Expedia, Guillermo Alcorta of Panrotas and
Claudio Magnavita of the Brazilian Association of Tourism Journalists.
The Forum's third annual summit, Destinations 2006, will run from
November 29 to December 2. The venue will be the campus of the
Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS).
Participants will include representatives of 53 countries who will
present nearly 140 international cases on sustainable tourism. The
program includes 17 thematic panels, four plenary sessions and a
cultural program. The Forum's first two annual summits brought
together over 6,000 people from 86 countries.
Other media-related presentations during the Forum meeting will
include "The media and the effects of global warming over tourism," by
Jonathan Tourtelot of National Geographic Traveler and "Integrated
Media: the case of the Caribbean Media Exchange" by Bevan Springer of
Counterpart International.
BRAZILMAX NEWS 2: BrazilMax.com Founding Editor to Speak at Event on
International Press Coverage
Bill Hinchberger, founding editor of BrazilMax.com, is scheduled to
speak at an event featuring international journalists who cover Brazil
on November 27 in São Paulo. The annual Encounter with the Foreign
Correspondents is organized by the São Paulo Foreign Press Club.
Hinchberger will take part in a panel on sustainable development and
social responsibility that begins at 11:10 a.m. He will be joined by
Víctor García Guerrero of Spain's Radio Nacional and Tim Hirsch, a
former BBC reporter. The moderator will be Sergio Leitão, director of
public policy for Greenpeace Brazil.
Other themes to be covered during the event are coverage of Brazilian
politics, the relationship between Brazilian companies and the foreign
press, the effect of recent corruption scandals on the reputation of
Brazilian companies that do business abroad, and the role of news
agencies in covering Brazil.
BRAZILMAX NEWS 3: BrazilMax Founding Editor Discuses the Online Travel
Guide in Interviews on Planeta and Oi Londres
Founding editor Bill Hinchberger discusses the evolution of BrazilMax
from a "pre-blog blog" to a popular full-service travel website about
Latin America's largest country in two interviews that appeared
recently on leading websites Planeta and Oi Londres.
In his conversation with Planeta founder Ron Mader, Hinchberger
explains the concept root tourism, which guides BrazilMax's content.
"The idea encompasses anything that allows travelers to delve more
deeply into nature, local culture or whatever," says Hinchberger. "The
term also consciously assumes the point of view of the traveler and
addresses the quality of his or her experience. Many terms that get
bounced around at conferences - like `responsible' and `sustainable' -
implicitly assume the point of view of the host society or community.
Nothing wrong with that, but that's not my audience. My audience
consists of travelers, so I try to understand things from their
perspective."
In an interview in Portuguese with reporter Yami Trequesser that
appears on Oi Londres, Hinchberger talks about BrazilMax's prospects
for growth. "I want to grow but without sacrificing the character of,
let's say, the friendly corner bar," he says. "I want my audience to
see me like the owner of the neighborhood pub. Somebody like me can do
that. It doesn't make sense to try to outdo the official tourism
agency website because they're too big and well-funded. But they have
no personality. I can spice things up while maintaining quality."
Developed in 1994 as a reporter's notebook (a forerunner of today's
blog), Planeta pioneered online reporting focusing on practical
ecotourism around the globe. The award-winning site provides free
access to more than 10,000 pages of articles and resource guides for
travelers, researchers and policy-makers. Founder Ron Mader has a
masters degree in Latin American studies from the University of Texas
at Austin and has been a professional journalist in Mexico for the
past ten years.
Oi Londres is a website in Portuguese for the Brazilian community in
London and online guide for Brazilian travelers in the United Kingdom.
Yami Trequesser (yami@...) is a Brazilian journalist who lives
in London and writes for websites such as Bluebus (www.bluebus.com.br)
and Bolsa de Mulher (www.bolsademulher.com.br) in addition to Oi Londres.

BRAZILMAX IN PERSON IN RECIFE NEXT WEEK
A veteran foreign correspondent who has filed for The Financial Times,
Business Week and Variety, Bill Hinchberger founded BrazilMax to serve the
needs of hip travelers to South America’s largest and most diverse country.
Since its launch in 2001, the irreverent but good humored BrazilMax has
earned acclaim from places like The Guardian of London, the SonntagsZeitung
of Zurich and O Dia of Rio de Janeiro. This year Hinchberger launched
BrazilMax Radio, an online program that features Brazilian music and
interviews in English with leading Brazilian cultural figures. Currently he
is in the midst of launching a new career as a television host with Secret
Brazil, a co-production between BrazilMax TV and TV-PUC, the video
production unit of the Catholic University in São Paulo.
At the conference in Recife, capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco,
Hinchberger will appear on a panel entitled Communications Media and Tourism
and the Environment. On the panel alongside Hinchberger will be Verônica
Falcão, managing editor of the environmental section of the daily newspaper
Jornal do Commercio, and Cláudio Taboada, president of Bahiatursa, the
tourism agency of the Brazilian state of Bahia. The session’s moderator will
be Bruno Albertim, reporter for the tourism section of the Jornal do
Commercio.
The two-day event is being organized by Duxi Communications, a leading
Recife-based public relations firm. Speakers include leading figures in the
realms of environmentalism, tourism and journalism in Brazil.
Before, after, and even during the event, Hinchberger will be scouring
Recife and the rest of Pernambuco for tips and tales for the readers of
BrazilMax.

far by foot or bus), reasonably safe (didn't want to get mugged, or take a
stray bullet), and didn't bust my budget (my salary being generous, but not
absurdly so). By Tom Moore. Read more:

Música Sertaneja: What It Is – And Isn’t (Part One) - “Música sertaneja” is
the label for non-urban Brazilian music, or, more correctly, Brazilian music
made far from the bigger Brazilian urban centers, sounding like the very
life away from these bigger urban centers: bucolical, clean, tranquil – or,
in more objective terms, music that is simple, naïf, devoid of much melodic
or harmonic sophistication, and more natural, i.e., acoustic. By Ayrton
Mugnaini Jr. Read more:

Pantanal Life: Sparkplug Ignites Cross Border Activism - To the uninitiated,
Porto Murtinho may seem like the middle of nowhere – or simply the end of
the road. A well-paved Brazilian interstate ends here. No bridge connects it
across the river to Paraguay. A few bait shops and the squalid shacks of a
displaced Indian tribe dot the opposite bank. Beyond the reservation lies
the vast expanse of the Gran Chaco, a bioregion as remarkable for its
diversity as for its hostility to humans... Yet many consider this paradise
– or at least the gateway to it. Clemencia Bitancourt Donatti found another
reality and went about changing it. Read more:

E-CONFERENCE: "THE ROLE OF DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM"
- 29 MAY - 9 JUNE 2006
Organized by the World Bank Development Communication Division, the USAID
Development Communication and Sustainable Tourism Unit, and the United
Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
We are pleased to invite you to participate in this E-Conference on "The
Role of Development Communication in Sustainable Tourism" that will take
place entirely through the Internet and emails between 29 May and 9 June
2006.
Tourism is one of the largest and rapidly expanding world economic sectors
and represents an important development opportunity for many countries and
communities if properly planned and managed. Development communication has a
crucial role in planning and implementing tourism policies and initiatives.
Strategic communication methodologies are necessary for facilitating
stakeholder participation in the design and implementation of development
policies and projects that identify and respond to real needs, develop local
ownership and ensure sustainability.
This e-conference will bring together international institutions and donors,
development practitioners, tourism professionals, decision-makers,
academicians and communication specialists representing various national
institutions, NGOs, private sector and media organizations from allover the
world to share experiences and lessons learned in applying communication
best practices to sustainable tourism development.
The E-Conference will be hosted on the Forum section of the World Bank
Development Communication Webpage (http:// <http://www.devcomm.org>
www.devcomm.org). To participate, please click on the
<http://www.devcomm.org/worldbank/public.asp?idmacro=16> Sustainable Tourism
link and follow the instructions. Registration will start on Friday, May 26.
For more information on the five concurrent discussions, please see the
<http://www.devcomm.org/worldbank/admin/uploads/WCCD%20Files/STConcept%20Not
e.doc> concept note on the same webpage.
We encourage you to send us case study documents, links to information and
resources, and look forward to your participation. This e-conference will be
followed by a related Summer Speaker Series, a specific event at the World
Congress for Communication for Development in Rome in October 2006, and

Helping to Rebuild New Orleans, Illegally - Among the small army of workers

Brazilians. They tend to sleep in the houses they're gutting, and they're

Pantanal: Me and Teddy Visit the Wilderness - Theodore Roosevelt inspires my
answers to two questions I often hear: “Where’s the best place in the Amazon
to see wildlife?” and “Where’s the best place in the Amazon to go fishing?”
On the 1913-14 expedition that became known as his Amazon journey, the 26th
president of the United States first traversed the Pantanal. So I reference
him to justify my singular answer to those Amazon travel questions: “The
Pantanal,” I respond. Read more from Bill Hinchberger:

Natural Highs: An Introduction to Urban Hiking in Rio de Janeiro - With a
landscape of mountains and beaches, waterfalls and lagoons, and the largest
urban forest in the world, Rio de Janeiro is a city inspired by its natural
surroundings. Because it is defined by the sensual curves of its terrain,
Rio is a place that just begs to be explored on foot. But don’t just stick
to the wide avenues and mosaic sidewalks. Escape the urban sprawl by
disappearing into the rainforest – or climb above it all to experience a

Defining Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) - A few months ago while performing

a blank look and the question, “What exactly is Brazilian popular Music?” A

Brazilian Air Safety: It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane (and that’s the problem) -
In peace-loving Brazil, the environment outranks terrorism as a security
threat at the country’s airports. Open air dumps nourish expanding
populations of vultures, and many of these birds venture into flight
patterns. The number of reported collisions between airplanes and birds in
Brazil has more than doubled in a decade. By Bill Hinchberger. Read more:

Brazilian Language: a Sea of Metaphors - Portugal, like England, was a great

the seven seas. It bequeathed a language full of maritime expressions to its

smacks of the sea. By Tom Moore. Read more:

"Roda de Samba" and "Pé de Parede" - Two kinds of surroundings, two kinds of

Brazilian Film: The End and the Beginning - One of the films that touched me
the most in 2005 was the documentary “O Fim e o Princípio” (The End and the
Beginning) by Eduardo Coutinho, shot in the sertão at Rio do Peixe, in the
state of Paraíba. Coutinho took a film crew and headed out to the
backcountry in Paraíba with no script, no project, no plan. The film that
resulted from this adventure is a demonstration that cinema has the power of
lifting to mythic grandeur the meaningless little life of the "average
citizen," of people who are "nobodies." Column by Braulio Tavares. Read
