Hi all -

We have a meeting on this Saturday, March 20th, from 1 to 4 pm at the NEHGS on
Newbury St in Boston. Possibly we will have a discussion on the research log (if
not now, then in May). We will begin discussion of Terry Riegel's book A Primer
for The Master Genealogist. I would also like to encourage everyone to bring in
one 'problem' - something they are having trouble with. It could be data entry,
sources, charts, reports - whatever. Hopefully the group, collectively, can
help.

Hope to see you all there -

Hi everyone -

Just a reminder about the meeting tomorrow at 1 pm at the genealogical Society
on Newbury Street at 1 pm. We will be talking about what to do with your
'collection' when you are no longer able to care for it. Lillian will give a
concrete example of what she has done.

Also a reminder for people to bring in their 'problems' or 'questions' or 'what
do I do here?'. By sharing our concerns and solutions we can all learn.

See you soon -

Linda

Hi Group -

Last Saturday we had our meeting - it was the first really nice day in Boston
and I think everyone took advantage of the weather and decided not to go indoors
for a meeting! We had only 4 people present - 3 'old timers' and one newbie,
who, I think, learned a lot. I have just posted a presentation that I gave on
managing your collection in the future - when you are unable to care for it
yourself. Lillian Cain talked about inheriting a large amount of genealogical
material, and how she put the collection together so as to be able to donate it
to the Society. That was very interesting.

Hopefully the weather will (still) be nice in May, but it won't deter people
from attending the meeting on the 15th of May. Come and be energized for
genealogical work during the summer

Hi to the Group -

I have an opportunity to go to California to be with my children and
grandchildren on the weekend of May 15, the same date as our meeting. I am
unable to find a replacement to lead the meeting, and therefore I would like to
cancel the May meeting. If anyone would like to volunteer to lead, please let me
know, and we will hold the meeting. I would be willing to work with that person
regarding the presentations.....

However, in the absence of a leader, the meeting will be canceled.

I has been brought to my attention that the scheduled date for the September
meeting (3rd Saturday, the 18th) is also Yom Kippur, so that meeting will
probably be rescheduled to the following Saturday. A notice will be sent out in
August.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter - any volunteer can contact
me....

Hello Everyone - Welcome back from your summertime activities....It's the fall,
and time to think about genealogy and meetings....

We will be meeting this year on the third Saturday, every other month.
That means -
Sep 18
Nov 20
Jan 15
Mar 19
May 18

We meet at the New England Historic Genealogical Society on Newbury St. Parking
is not so easy, but the library it great, and the chance to do some research is
even better. The best of all is to meet other TMG users! Come early and spend
some time in the library. We meet at 1 pm at the education center on the second
floor.

Every is welcome, beginners to advanced users. We can all learn some new
'tricks' or use features we have not tried before. This year we will be spending
some time every meeting with Terry Reigel's book 'A Primer for The Master
Genealogist'. It covers lots of basic functions. I hope we will have some good
discussions about different features.

So - our first meeting is a week from tomorrow - Saturday, Sep 18th. I hope many
of you can join us.

Thanks, and see you soon -

Hi Everyone -

Last Saturday we had an interesting meeting on a few topics - I have posted the
presentation in the files section. We discussed the new search function on the
NEHGS site - www.americanancestors.org; Family History day on Oct 16th; goals
for the year (individual goals); a message from John Cardinal for people to
consider using Second Site (4 out of the 6 people present used SS); using
Dropbox to synch computers. We also went through the first chapters of Terry
Riegel's book, which generated lots of discussion!

The next meeting will be on Sat Nov 20th. The main topic of discussion will be
charts - one page VCF charts, examples of the beautiful charts that have are on
the Wholly Genes support Forum for VCF, and possibilities of other kinds of
charts. We will all try to make a chart of our data. Also we will go through the
next chapters in Terry's book.

We have not had many people attending the meetings in Boston. Shortly I will be
asking everyone for ideas to help increase our attendance, so start thinking!

See you in November -

Hello Group

We have not had a large attendance for the last few meetings - between 5 and 7
people, out of a mailing group of over 50. I have been thinking of ways to get
more people to come. One possibility is to change the meeting location - perhaps
people don't like to come into the city. A possibility for a site is a building
near the Burlington Mall (right off Route 128) - my son has an office out there.
There would be free parking, and he has a lot of room for us to meet. So I ask
everyone to send an email with an opinion -

1. Same location - Newbury St, NEGHS
2. New location - near the Burlington Mall, right off 128

Another question:
1. Same time - Saturday afternoon 1-4
2. New time - Saturday morning 10-1

Any other comments are welcome.

If I don't hear from at least 10 people then we will continue with the same
location and time.
Thanks a lot for your participation and help.

Hi Group -

Well, the results are in, and the Burlington Mall area wins hands down!!

Thirteen people responded to the survey - thank you all very much.
11 for the Burlington Mall, 2 for Boston.
As far as time - 6 wanted the meeting in the morning - 10-1, and 4 wanted it in
the afternoon, and 3 thought either time would be OK.

So......

The meeting will be held near the Burlington Mall*
from 10-1, on Saturday, Nov 20th, the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
I will give precise directions in a couple of weeks - possibly, (if I can figure
out how to do it), send a map along with these instructions.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Linda Reinfeld

*PS - To get to the building you will take the Burlington Mall exit, head down
Middlesex Turnpike towards Boston, and take the first left. It's not far - you
are still within sight of the Mall. That is the general area.....

Hi Group

A friendly reminder about our upcoming meeting, Nov 20th, at 2 pm, in Burlington
- New Location! Hopefully it will be easier for everyone to attend, and parking
is free. The address is:
5 Commonwealth Executive Drive, Burlington, MA

The directions:
Turn off 95/128 at exit 32B, Middlesex Tpke, heading towards Boston (away from
the Burlington Mall). Immediate left onto Wheeler Road. Then first left (about
1/4 mile) onto Commonwealth Executive Drive. There is only one building, at the
end of the road. Go in the front door, upstairs. The meeting will be on the left
on the second floor. There is an elevator - it is all wheelchair accessible.

The main part of the meeting will be charts - talks, examples, and hands-on
creating. Jim Byram, Lilian Cain & I will be speaking. If anyone has any great
examples (or charts in progress) (or charts that need help), please bring them
in.

We will also be reviewing the next chapters of Terry Reigel's book: A Primer for
the Master Genealogist.

Hope to see you there.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please let me know.

See you in a couple of weeks

Just a quick reminder of our upcoming meeting this Saturday in Burlington, MA.
The time is 1 pm. ***Note the time. I think in my last post I incorrectly said 2
pm. However our usual time is 1 pm.

Directions to the meeting:
5 Commonwealth Executive Drive, Burlington, MA

Turn off 95/128 at exit 32B, Middlesex Tpke, heading towards Boston (away from
the Burlington Mall). Immediate left onto Wheeler Road. Then first left (about

end of the road. Go in the front door, upstairs. The meeting will be on the left
on the second floor. There is an elevator - it is all wheelchair accessible.

We will be discussing Terry Reigel's book Chapter 4, Personal Data Entry
Standards. It would be very helpful and interesting to all if everyone could
bring in their ideas (cheat sheets!) of Data Standards - we could have a very
lively discussion.

Another focus of the meeting will be on charts - how to make a 5-generation
ancestor chart on one page, the many possibilities of different types of charts
for different uses, and other types of charting. I am hoping everyone will be
able to create a 5-generation ancestor chart by the end of the meeting.

Hope to see you all there.

Linda Reinfeld

PS Again, please note correct time: 1 pm.

Hello Group -

Thank you everyone who came to the meeting on Saturday. All seemed to be very
happy that our meeting was NOT in Boston, but more easily accessible, and
cheaper (no parking charges). So we will continue to have the meetings in our
new location, near the Burlington Mall.

I will be posting the presentation that was made of Terry's book, Chapter 4.
Also posting the charting instructions. There are instructions for making 5
different charts. We all attempted the 5-generation ancestor chart - and most
were able to make a nice chart. The other types of charts were presented, but we
didn't have time to go through the instructions. I hope that everyone will try
them on your data at home.

See you in two months, Jan 15th.

Have very happy holidays....

It's March, time for the next TMG meeting. Again, we will be meeting in
Burlington, 5 Commonwealth Executive Drive, at the same location. So save the

For this meeting we have decided to concentrate on sources. I will be going over
the next chapter in Terry's book, 'Working with Sources'. Everyone is asked to
talk about how they use sources in their research. This is a 'hot' topic -
hopefully we will have some good discussions.

There will be snacks.....so please come and join us.

Hi Everyone -

Hope you had a great summer! I did - I found lots and lots of new relatives!

It's time to think about the coming year.
Our meetings will be held the 3rd Saturday of the month (as before), on Sep 17
(in two weeks), Nov 19, Jan 21, Mar 17 and May 21.

We will continue to hold our meetings in Burlington, at the same location, 5
Commonwealth Executive Drive.

On the 17th of this month Michael Davis will be talking on reporting, which is
the next chapter in Terry's book. Other topics will be covered according to
interest - we welcome questions. Perhaps people could bring in copies of their
favorite reports. And hopefully this year we will see the release of v8, thereby
giving us lots of topics for discussions.

See you all there - in two weeks.

Directions:

Hi Everyone -

I just wanted to post some news about last week's meeting. We had a presentation
by Michael Davis about reporting - chapters 7, 8 and 9 of Terry's book. In
addition I showed some copies of DeAnna Burghart's cheat sheets for reports.
They can be found here:http://www.rootsandthreads.com/tmg/
Thanks again to DeAnna for creating these....

There was also a presentation on preserving/saving your family treasures and
genealogy data - prompted in part by waiting for hurricane Irene and worrying
what would happen.

We also discussed a slightly newer format for our meetings. We will have one
major presentation on TMG at the beginning of the meeting, and then have some
time for Second Site. The meeting in November will have a presentation on
Terry's chapter of Customizing your Workspace. Then we will have a hands-on
workshop for setting up an initial Second Site web site. Everyone is encouraged
to bring a database that can be made into a web site. It's quite easy to create
an initial site - it only gets tricky if you want to do lots of customizations!!
SS is really a wonderful companion to TMG.

Hello to all -

This Saturday will be the next meeting of our group. We will be discussing the
next chapter of Terry's book - Customizing your Work Space. So be prepared to
show us your layouts!

The second part of the meeting will be on Second Site - 6 steps to building a
web site. We will be building web sites during the meeting. Even if you don't
plan on uploading the data to the web, this is a valuable tool. If you don't own
Second Site you can purchase it from the web site
https://www.familyhistoryhosting.com/members/cart.php?a=add&pid=7. It takes
about 24 hours to process a request, so be sure to purchase it before the
meeting. Information about Second Site can be found at www.johncardinal.com/ss/

I urge everyone to come and participate in this project! If you are unsure about
using all your data, create a subset of data, and start working with that.
Creating the basic site is easy, and very interesting - your data is presented
in a new and informative way!

We will be meeting at the same location, in Burlington, 5 Commonwealth Executive
Drive.

Directions:
Turn off 95/128 at exit 32B, Middlesex Tpke, heading towards Boston (away from

Hi Group -

It's taken me a while, but I have just posted on the website the 2 presentations
made during our last meeting. The first presentation was on Terry's book Chapter
10 Customizing your Workspace.

The second presentation was a wonderful one by Dave Velten about how to get
started in Second Site. This was an excellent talk, very clear. I hope everyone
who would like information about Second Site will take a look at it.

Unfortunately not very many people were at the meeting. Hopefully the next
session, on Jan 21st will be better attended. We will continue to present on
Terry's book and Second Site. Perhaps we will be able to discuss TMG v8!

Have a happy holiday season, and good hunting (for ancestors, that is)

different ways you are using the enhancements to v8. We won't do another chapter
in Terry's book for this meeting, but leave it open for discussions on v8.
Hopefully Jim Byram will be able to attend, and help us with questions. He has
been very helpful on the TMG mailing list.

Time permitting, we will also discuss Second Site. Last meeting we went over the
6 steps to building a new site. Not many people were there, so we can review the
6 steps again for those who are new to second site. Unfortunately Dave Velten
cannot attend; however we can go over his presentation.

We will also have refreshments - Polly will provide something good.

We will be meeting at the same location, in Burlington, 5 Commonwealth Executive
Drive.

Directions:
Turn off 95/128 at exit 32B, Middlesex Tpke, heading towards Boston (away from
the Burlington Mall). Immediate left onto Wheeler Road. Then first left (about
1/4 mile) onto Commonwealth Executive Drive. There is only one building, at the
end of the road. Go in the front door, upstairs. The meeting will be on the left
on the second floor. There is an elevator.

If there are any last-minute questions my cell phone is 781-999-2451 (this is a
new number)

See you all soon -

Linda S Reinfeld
