Yes Sunday 8/04/02 The Ft Wayne IN. Journal Gazzette ran an article
on Bookcrossing Thats how I found out about you. Think this is a
great site and have released 3 books already ! about 5 or six more
to be released between Lima OH and Cinci OH next week.
That is pretty cool. :)

I just heard about this new Book-related thing called BookPost. See
info at http://www.onfocus.com/bookwatch/BookPost_info.asp
BookPost provides a JavaScript routine that uses both the Amazon APIs
and blogger APIs to provide a connection between a book and ones
'blog' or web log. Think of it as an automated way to journal what
you're reading.
One way it works is that while viewing a book on Amazon.com, you click
on your BookPost bookmark and a journalling window pops up. Another
way is simply to open the bookmark, type in the ISBN, and then journal
away.
It would be cool if Ron could work with the BookPost programmer to
implement a similar capability, so we (and other visitors) could use
the 'click & journal' option when looking at a book at BookCrossing.
Cool stuff, huh?
Elsi
Too bad it's not on the web - or if it is, I can't find it at
http://www.wvgazette.com/. If someone can find the URL, I'll add the link
to our Press page.

On page 2 of section C of this morning's (8/9) Charleston Gazette is
an article from the Knight-Ridder syndicate on BookCrossing. Our
version of the article takes up nearly a quarter of a page and has a
great photo of a Philadelphia bookcrosser leaving a book on a bench.
I had contacted the Gazette a few weeks ago about a story and I'm so
glad to see they picked this up....any of your local newspapers
carrying the story today? (also check your Sunday paper)
Hope to see lots of WV folks sign up today!

Jonathan,
Please let us know how this goes after you get the
book. I looked at their site, but I don't feel it
gives enough information.
Thanks,

For me, someone picking up my book and taking it home is a
success.
Shari
I'm starting to use that as my mantra also, Shari. I have so far released 6
books and all of them have been captured (cause I went back to see LOL) but
I haven't heard from a single soul.
At first I was disappointed but then I realized that my goal was to release
books for others to find and that's exactly what happened. So, I'm ok now.
BTW My kids and I are really having a great time finding spots around town
to release our books. To me, that's half the fun.

Hello All,
Not sure if I am supposed to post things like this on the email group. If not
then I apologize and just delete.
Anyway, I received this random email mentioning that I could receive a free
Penguin Putnam book for signing up to this new program. All you have to do is
create buzz around the book you get.
Well, a friend of mine signed up and he just got the book - THE FROG KING. They
apparently give you suggestions on activities that you can perform to create the
buzz. You also get points for every activity you perform to get more books and
other stuff.

This is a great idea, Ron! I think there are many "successful" releases we
don't know about. For me, someone picking up my book and taking it home is a
success.
Shari
Just a quick note to everyone to keep the faith! Remember, for 98% of the
releases on the site, we're only 5 months into this game, and books travel
slowly since they take time to read. Here's a great message-in-a-bottle
story that will help put things into perpective - this bottle got found 22
years after it was released:
http://www.nationalpost.com/home/story.html?id=2EE85E74-099B-4FE8-9882-3A42B
2362CE8
Think how exited you'll be 5 years from now to get an email from our system
telling you a long lost book has been found and journaled on.
As one of our members (Robin?) so concisely put it in the forums: Release
for the joy of sharing. The releases caught* are just icing on the cake.
-Ron
*I'm going to be substituting the terminology "successful releases" with
"releases caught" in the site's impending makeover, so that the negative

Hello all. I just thought I would drop off a quick piece of email. At first, I
was discouraged as many of you seem to be. But, with promotion and
word-of-mouth, our city has started to embrace Book Crossing. In fact, just last
night I went to hunt for a book and it was scooped by another Book Crosser! I
had to laugh.. I've had my share of books that haven't been found/recorded and I
am sure there will be many more. Perhaps that person doesn't journal but maybe
the next will.. :-)
I have heard mention about people who are leader in releases and in successful
releases and wanted to comment. I think that where you leave a book does make a
big difference. Here are a few ideas and what was successful for myself.
* Covered bus shelters
* Phone booths
*Free newspaper boxes
Also, if I am releasing a book, I will let a fellow BookCrosser know and let
them have a chance before I post in the GO HUNTING section.
I have done a book swap as well and that guarantees that someone who really
wants to read a book will get their wish. I have across alot of really generous
and friendly BookCrossers.
My success rate started to increase, once I pasted a flourescent sticky note on
the cover, "I am not lost. I have been put here for you to find. Look inside.."
Also, I wrote a few notes inside (with the bookmark which was glue sticked to
the inner cover and secured with clear packing tape). I think part of the
problem could be someone removing the label and giving the book away or even
selling it..
I'd love to hear any other ideas or input from others...
Enjoy!

It does take a while. Look at the leaders who have released a whole slew
of books and you'll see their successful release vs. actual release is low.
It's a numbers game.
For the whole group: I had a weird thought while I was tying my shoes this
morning prior to leaving my humble abode: I briefly (I am stressing
briefly) thought of suggesting using Pearl Jam's "Release" as a theme song
- the particular line that popped into my gourd was "Release me.... " which
I envisioned being sung by the books. But, when I considered the rest of
the song's lyrics, while interesting and moving to some, there are no
references to books, altruism or karma much less a reference to the
combination of these three. Too bad, I could have been onto something.
So, due to my failure at remembering book oriented songs, we are still
without a theme song. Not that Ron put out the request for us to come up
with one, it was just a case of caffeine being behind the 8 ball known as
sleep deprivation and my mind meandering in the pre-work hour.
Hopefully my day won't be as long as it looks like it's going to be.

I would guess around 2/3 of my official
successes are due to the state project, but that
still leaves a decent number of wilderness finds.
It almost seems like there's been a boom of
them, lately. Maybe the press is finally paying
off. In any case, almost every day I get someone
NEW telling me about a find, which always gives
me a lift.
Also, the last time I checked on the Official
Zone at the laundromat (2 days ago), there were
some children at the place. As soon as I walked
in with my stack of books, they were at my side
looking to see what I'd brought for them. The
employee commented that they'd been complaining
because all the previous books were gone. (True
- I was down to six books there, all adult
romances.)
I managed to get the shelf back up to 20 books,
mostly kids books this time. And, before I left,
three more were gone, but I didn't bring enough
extras to replace them. I'm planning on checking
it a little sooner than a full week. When kids
come begging for books, I really feel like I'm
doing something worthwhile there.
My most recent official success came from
Walmart. I've been putting books in the brochure
racks near the exits - the ones that hold free
newspapers. The finder said they'd seen the TV
spot and knew about BookCrossing, but never
thought they'd be lucky enough to find a book.
:)
This project makes every day an adventure.

From what I can see, I don't think many people report finding books. Maybe
it is because there aren't as many book fiends that are also computer hounds
as we expect.
I would love to know an actual percentage of successful releases in the
wild. I've looked for successful releases on the site and what I've found is
that, primarily, the successful releases are those books that are passed on
to a friend and the friend is told about the BookCrossing site. Even that
scenario didn't work for me. I passed a book on to a friend and told her
about the site. For some reason, she didn't post on the site. She did get
that she was supposed to pass the book on (which I guess is REALLY what is
most important), so maybe somewhere, down the road, someone will post.
I found one entry on the site quite interesting. Someone left a book at a
fair. The person who found it didn't have a computer. So, without reading
the book, she passed the book on to a friend who DID have a computer and
could post on the site. She understood the idea and didn't want to see the
chain broken, so to speak.
I think it would be interesting for the extroverts among us to leave a book
in the wild and then strike up a casual conversation with the person who
finds the book and find out if they "get" the BookCrossing idea. This isn't
something I could ever pull off, but maybe some of you could. If you do,
report back! ;-)
Take care!

Hi everyone!
I just joined today and released my first book into the wilds of
Massachusetts.
Since I haven't actually released the book yet (release is planned for
tomorrow), will my entry show up when people "go hunting?"
I was referred to BookCrossing by someone on a Yahoo SF/fantasy
discussion list I'm on. It's a great idea!

I am reading Stephen King's "Everything's Eventual"

Hi;
It seems there are several sci-fi/fantasy fans on the list. Can anyone
identify a book from this description?
"I read a teen sci-fi book around 15 years ago (the book could have been
much older) set in the future and about a boy who graduated from some
military-style school and was very gifted, and was given a talking red
suzuki motorbike by the government, which I think he called 'Suzy'. Any
ideas what book this was? I thought it was by Nicholas Fisk, but none of the
books I've found listed under his name seem to fit...."

What is the difference between tell-a-friend referrals and new member
referrals? Is one the # of unique people who visit the site via a referral
link, and the other the # of those people who actually sign up? And which

Should be fixed now. If you have books on your bookshelf, it will go to
the bookshelf page. If the member doesn't yet have books registered (for
example, new users telling friends), then the referral link brings up the
home page instead. Should keep everyone happy.
