I removed the CAI 302/303 and the IPAQ with WinPilot to make the price more in
line with market value. It's a good ship as is but the
toys aren't free.

I am not aware of any Phoebus selling for more than $11k-$12k within the last
few years. This new pricing while not as exciting as $15k is probably more in
line with realistic pricing. Wish we could all get more but there are a lot of
sellers out there discounting newer ships. Best of luck with the sale. Looks
like a nice bird.

My Phoebus has a B-40 electric vario and a PZL mechanical vario. Both are
attached to the static port and a TE probe on the tail, not the pitot. They are
also attached to a 0.45 liter flask, or at least one of them is (I forget). I
read somewhere that if two varios share a common TE probe, it's best to split
the line to them well away from the instruments, like behind the pilot
somewhere. Putting a "tee" fitting for this up in the panel near the
instruments supposedly results in errors as they interfere with each other.
Call Cambridge and ask them about it. It may need the electronic compensation
turned off to run with a TE probe.

If you know anyone looking for a nice B model, have them check Wings and Wheels.
We get the glider almost a year ago, we are still waiting the permit to repair it,
We imported it to Argentina, and already we are working in a trailer for it,
It is the first LS3 a ever in Argentina, so we are breaking ground in this issue.

My bid was only about $800. I didn't really want it, as I have plenty of projects right now. Not sure who got the plane, but all it needed was a new canopy.
When did you get the LS-3 from them? I think I remember a 3a within the last year or so.
There is also a Speed Astir up for salvage. Brokedn aft canopy section and broken frame for that section. Probably some damage to the fuselage around the canopy, as they say it came open/off in flight.

I guess nobody here saw or bid on the Phoebus B that AIG had up for salvage bid? They totalled it because of a broken canopy. They currently have a Speed Astir up for salvage for a broken canopy and frame. I put in a low-ball bid on the Phoebus, but did not get it.
Just a word of caution to all here. Don't try to save a few buck by underinsuring your glider! If the cost to repair starts to approach half of the insured value, you are at risk of having them total your plane. You will get a check for the insured amount, minus your deductable, and you sign the bill of sale giving them the plane. Insurance is a business, and they are looking to cut their losses if you damage your plane. If the repair estimate is more than pay-off minus salvage value, that is likely the route they will take.
So, if you love your Phoebus and have it insured, keep this in mind!

I would be at least interested in pictures and details? Any and all information would be appreciated. I am only leary of the C model due to rigging difficulty. How are the wings to rig? I have to rig and de-rig weekly because I do not have hanger facilities available. I do have club members to help but don't want them running in panic when I show up (haha).

I had a lot of trouble with my ailerons when I got my Phoebus. They had a lot of drag and I could not get full deflection of the stick to the right. There were a number of things that I did to solve the problem, and some of them may apply to yours. Often it is a cumulative effect from several sources that adds up to too much friction.
1) Check all the bearings and pivot points from the stick to the ailerons. Phoebuses (Phoebi?) are all about forty years old. The bearings used in them are open and often lubed with white grease which attracts dirt and hardens over time. If your glider has been stored for a long time in a hot dry box or the prior annuals were "pencil whipped", the bearings may be causing the drag. With the wings detached, wiggle the stick to see if the problem is in the fuselage. Then try wiggling the aileron to see if the problem is in the wings, and on which side.
2) Shine a light down the wing to see if anything is obstructing the pushrod, like dirt dauber or rats nests. MIne had a lot of dirt daubers in the wings, most of which I got out with a Shopvac and a looooong piece of PCV conduit.
3) Check around the holes in the fuselage AND the wing root to make sure the pushrods and Hotelier fittings are not rubbing there. The AD requiring safety pins in the Hotelier fittings reduces the clearance for these. Mine were rubbing the edge of the hole which could have jammed the ailerons and caused a BIG problem. If you see scratches from the safety pins or wires on the edge of the hole, rasp or grind out the hole with a smooth radius where it was rubbing and varnish the raw edge. Remember, it may look fine on the ground but be dragging when the wings are loaded up. When you hook up the controls and still have that 1/2 inch gap to look through, you can see if they are near one side.
4) If you have teflon tape or mylar seals on the wing, it may cause a problem. My mylar caused a lot of drag and would occasionally catch on the edge of the teflon tape on the aileron itself, jamming the aileron at full deflection. This sucked and would come loose with a loud pop that sounded like I broke something off. I removed the mylar and the teflon, and replaced it with the good quality white CLOTH tape (not plastic wing gap tape). When you apply it, push the aileron all the way down and stick it to the top. When you push the aileron up, bend the tape down into the gap with a coin edge so it will bend that way each time. If you apply it with a centered aileron, it will not stretch when it goes down and make the problem worse.
5) My Phoebus was beautifully restored and the gaps were finished with a close tolerance. At the ends of the ailerons, the gap between the aileron and the wing was too tight and not exactly at 90 degrees. When the aileron went to full deflection, it pinched in the gap and jammed the aileron. Put a piece of thin cardboard in the gap and deflect your ailerons all the way. If it jams, you need to open the gap up by putting a strip of folded sandpaper in the gap and sawing up and down. It needs a little room to expand on those hot days, so give it some.
Even with all these things done, a Phoebus is much heavier on the ailerons than in pitch which is very light. You should always be able to deflect them until the stick hits the edge of the seat pan cutout, per the manual, though.

Thank you Fergus. I will certainly get in contact with you regarding the rigging and such. I hope to find a suitable ship before summer. My club is full of "nay-sayers" concerning the Phoebus, specifying the balsa and the wing rigging as the drawbacks. Of course, most can afford to fly Discus and DGs! LOL My budget doesn't allow that (public school teacher here) and the Phoebus looks like a great ship in my eyes. I am not an impressionable youngster (51) so I follow my own logic with informed decision making, not mere opinion and hype.
I was interested in the HP series but am shying away from homebuilts due to such a variability inherent to their quality. Darned it all.
I look forward to corresponding with you soon as a new Phoebus owner (with any luck!).

Hi Tim,
Seen your post about the Phoebus. We do have a Phoebus C for sale but unfortuanatly it is in Ireland. Two people can rig in about 8 minutes with a little practice. The only rigging aids needed are a wing dolly and a wing stand. There are a few tips that makes things a lot easier. If you do buy let know and I will put together something for you. Added to what the seller tells you it should be quite easy. If you do not have a strong back then a third person will be helpful for about half the rigging time. Good luck.

Thank you Fergus. I will certainly get in contact
with you regarding the rigging and such. I hope to find a suitable ship
before summer. My club is full of "nay-sayers" concerning the
Phoebus, specifying the balsa and the wing rigging as the drawbacks. Of
course, most can afford to fly Discus and DGs! LOL My budget
doesn't allow that (public school teacher here) and the Phoebus looks like a
great ship in my eyes. I am not an impressionable youngster (51) so I
follow my own logic with informed decision making, not mere opinion and hype.
I was interested in the HP series but am shying away from
homebuilts due to such a variability inherent to their quality.
Darned it all.
I look forward to corresponding with you soon as a new
Phoebus owner (with any luck!).

Hi
Tim,
Seen
your post about the Phoebus. We do have a Phoebus C for sale but
unfortuanatly it is in Ireland. Two people can rig in about 8 minutes with a
little practice. The only rigging aids needed are a wing dolly and a wing
stand. There are a few tips that makes things a lot easier. If you do buy let
know and I will put together something for you. Added to what the seller
tells you it should be quite easy. If you do not have a strong back then a
third person will be helpful for about half the rigging time. Good luck.
