Miss Nancy,
I was born in Stuttgart, W. Germany while my father was in the U.S. Army. Know what's kind of funny? My parents left Pa. and went to Germany where I was born. We left Germany and went to Md.! From Md. we went back to Germany. After Germany, we went to Alabama. I've lived my entire life in the Southern states from 1962 to the present. I almost fell like I retraced the Bishop's journey to this country. I believe where they come from in Germany is close to Stuttgart also. What do you think? John

The Indian must be in the family lines that left the Md. and Pa. area. There is none I know of in my line. All of mine that I can find are German intermarried with English, and Scot/Irish. Here is what I now believe my Bishop line to be, but, I wouldn't bet my life on it. John

Hi
My mother had dark hair high cheek bones and dark skin Mary Magdalene Bishop daughter of Pearl Prater and Crocket Frank Bishop his birth was around 1899.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Lee Ann
If I'm correct I think that the Crocket I'm talking about father is Henry and Lucinda's
son William Gordon? I'll check again on my info. Thanks
Hi!
Nancy Anne Boothe's mother was Nancy Anna Cosby- I have some more info on
her, will check and see what i've got and post it. In our particular line of
Bishop's, yes, you can tell that there is Indian in them- dark hair...etc.
If my sister-in-law Cindy sees this, hopefully she can refresh my memory on
the Melungeon stories she heard on the Bishop's too-
Nancy

Hello cousins, I read with interest the report of Sue Moore sent out
earlier today which described Nancy Ann Booth's mother as
"Nancy(Indian)".This interested me because I always thought my
grandfather and his sister looked as if they had Native American ancestry
(high cheekbones, black hair) and I wondered where it might have come
from. Their grandmother was Parsidia Bishop Anderson. Nancy the Indian
would have been her great grandmother. That seems an awfully remote
connection for these characteristics to still be seen in my
grandfather.I'm wondering if anyone else has Bishop ancestors matching
this description, or has any other information or thoughts on the
subject. Karen Anderson Downing

Doug Bishop located a death record for one of Henry and Lucinda's children and it showed that Lucinda's maiden name was Johnson. This Henry Bishop is son of David and Elizabeth (Wolford) Bishop. I am not sure about the Crocket Frank Bishop. Of all the Crocket Bishops, I have never come across the middle name of Frank, maybe Doug will know.
Doug Bishop does not subscribe to the list but you can email him at dbishop2@...
He may have the answer to this one.

Hi Louella,
Are you looking for info on the John Bishop that married Elizabeth Mutter? I
just wanted to make sure I had that straight. If so, I have quite a bit of
info on him- which one of his kids do you descend from?

What year was he born? I have a Crockett Bishop, born 1849- son of Henry
Bishop and Lucinda Green- that Henry was from around McDowell County West Va
I believe- he was a son of David and Elizabeth (Wolford) Bishop- I am not
too familiar with that particular line, but I know that there are other
David researchers on here- I am fairly sure that your Crockett Frank is
from David's line- when one considers the fact that there were so many David
Crockett Bishop's from that area and that line-
I do not have a wife on him however. I will keep hunting!

Hi everyone,
I am writing in response to the information written by Sue Moore that you
posted John. Sue has some great info, but there are some things that are
inaccurate- the biggest one is that John (Hans Johannes Bischoff) died in
Lincoln County Tennessee in 1776. He didn't die until after 1810, and it was
in Montgomery County Virginia, not Tennessee. I've done some research into
that, Lincoln County didn't even exist in 1776, according to what I have
found. This particular subject, as anyone who has ever corresponded with me
knows, has long been a thorn in my side! My husband and I have made a few
trips out and about researching, and one of the places we went to was the
area in Montgomery County where John's land was. We found the owner of the
property at that time, and she verified the history of it, as well as
direct descendants of John's through his son Henry's line. The woman who
owned the property then was a sweet lady by the name of Neva Wurzberger, she
has since passed away, and I have not been back to Virginia to research who
owns the property now. I do plan to try to do that this summer. Also, if one
closely examines the real estate transaction records that are available from
that era, it becomes clear that John couldn't have been dead if he and his
second wife Ruth were still buying and selling land as late as 1809. Some
researchers have said that they believe there was a second John Bishop, a
son of John (Hans Johannes) and his first wife Margaretha, however, the
dates don't add up for that to be possible. Given Ruth's first marriage to a
Scaggs, (that also becomes a huge mess!) the dates involved when you
consider John and Margaretha's youngest son Jacob's birth, Rachel (Skaggs-
Bishop- Lester)'s birth, the marriages, etc- it also becomes more clear that
it was indeed John Sr. who married Ruth Elkins after his first wife
Margaretha drowned. We also have seen evidence that Rachel (Skaggs....) was
only John's stepdaughter with Ruth, not his blood daughter, although further
on through the generations, there are uncountable tie-ins with John's blood
son with Ruth, David. David was born after the time period that John's first
wife died, (Margaretha) and he would have remarried to Ruth.
I personally plan to continue trying to prove my above points even more
clearly, hopefully someday I will find a marriage record for both of John's
wives, but at this point in time, I guess I will have to be satisfied with
what I have. I have heard it said that there is some type of a Cherokee
indian legal doc that has information on it pertaining to Ruth, through her
daughter Rachel's line, I personally however have never found it, nor seen
anything from it. That is also something else for a person to dig into.
There are obviously records somewhere in Germany of John's birth, someone
had to have gotten the information that we have all found reguarding the
reformed Lutheran church...etc from somewhere, this is another item to keep
in mind to keep looking for.
I believe that your Jacob who died in 1784 in Hagerstown, is a brother to
John- (Hans Johannes). This is the biggest lead I personally have ever found
concerning John's brothers, who we know came to America with him. Do you
have any kind of documents, or ?? that mention his birth, or any other
family members of his- such as his brothers, parents, etc?
As soon as I have time, I am going to go much further into this line, and
work on John's other brothers, as well as the (I think was an uncle or great
uncle of his) who supposedly came to America in 1740-
Thanks for letting me air my thoughts everyone!

I am trying to locate some info on a flour mill that was in Martinsburg, WV up until the 1940's when it closed. It was called Bishop Mills and since Martinsburg, WV and Hagerstown MD are so close, I would love to find out if the family that owned the mill is related to our Bishops. I also collect antique farm/kitchen items and I just purchased two of their flour sacks. The mill was bought out by Gold Medal Flour and I checked their web site and the Bishop Mills is mentioned but there is no family info. I just thought someone might have run across this info in their pursuit of our John Bishop.

Hi group,
I an researching the family of John Bishop of Roane Co Wv.
Hoping to hear from someone in the group that can help me .Who was John
sr wife?
Lou
Hi All,
Most of you know me and who my line is, for those who don't:
Bill Kenneth Anderson
Parents: Grace Bertrand Anderson
Grandparents: Lee Bertrand
Louisa Hunt
Louisa Hunt's father was:
My great grandparents: William Matison Hunt m: Martha Skeens.
My Gg-G/p William Hunt m: Pricey Bishop
Pricey was the d/o William E. Bishop, Sr. and Mary "Polly" Justice
George Bishop and Nancy Anna Boothe.
John Bishop(Hans Johannes Bischoff) and Margaret Obermeyer.
Besides Bishop, I am also researching: Anderson; Adams; Hunt;
Bentley; Amburgey; Bertrand; McGlone; Williamson; Skeens; Hackney;
Phillips; Johnson; Hall; Justice and Ashbey. And others.
I spend 30-50 hours a week on the computer and at the archives
around the area.
I have reams of copies of material from the DE. State Archives and
microfilms ordered through the local LDS Church, I am wading through.
Plus other material family members have sent me and family verbal
recollections, written down and awaiting verification. I am fortunate
in the respect that my Grandfather Lee Bertrand had the mail route
from Conway, VA to Pikeville, KY for many, many years and my Uncle
Ray Bertrand took over for 35 years or more afterwards. So knowing
many of the people in that part of Pike Co., was their job. While my
g/f passed away, Uncle Ray is still amoung us and although in ill
health, is a great source of info. I also remember many of the people
of their mail route from summers riding the mail truck.
I am happy to share what I have, some of which I have verified and
some I have not.
Happy New Year to All.
Bill K. Anderson - Bka199@...

Thanks for inviting me to join.
Jack
I just would like to welcome anyone who joins, and say thanks for
your interest. When I had an email group up on Listbot, it worked out
wonderfully well for quite some time. A lot of us researchers were
able to share a lot of information! That is one of the goals for this
group. To share, exchange, make some headway on some of the deadends
we all hit from time to time!
It would be really nice if, as each person joins, we could all post
what lines we are from, what we are working on, that type of thing.
It would help get this list off the ground, and get us all going in
the right directions!
My name is Nancy Bishop, I am the wife of a Bishop, and I have been
working on this family's genealogy for several years now. I've had a
lot of good luck and been fortunate to have found as much information
as what I have on this family. I know how hard it is to locate and
verify things sometimes- I know from experience on my own family line-
which I am struggling with also.
The line my husband comes from is through Miles Bishop, son of
William E. Bishop Sr. of Pike County Kentucky- Miles having relocated
to Morgan County, Kentucky, about 1891. William E. Bishop Sr. was the
son of George Bishop and Nancy Anna (Boothe) Bishop- and George was
the son of Hans Johannes Bischoff and Margaretha Overmeyer. Hans
Johannes changed his name to John Bishop once he was here in the
States. John was also married to Ruth Elkins- they had David Bishop-
and Ruth had a daughter named Rachel Rebecca Skaggs Lester- (long
story) from a previous marriage.
Well, there's the sum of what I am, and have been doing, as basic as
I can make it.
At this point in time, of course, I am always searching for any info
on Miles Bishop and Nancy Jane Matney's kids, but I am also working
through Rhoda Ann, and Vina's lines- (children of William Sr.-
sisters of Miles)
I need info on all of the kids, of course!!
Talk to you later,
Nancy
