Hi all,
Just had to post this, as I was going through some of these mountains of papers
I still have to sort (years worth of research), I ran across a marriage out of
Meigs County Ohio that perked my interest. Most of the records I've ever seen
for Elizabeth Bishop, daughter of John Bishop and his wife Catherine Elizabeth
Mutter, have always referred to her husband as a Thomas Coon. Well, that's what
I had left it as all these years because I'd never seen anything that showed me
otherwise. Until tonight.
Elizabeth Bishop married JOHN COON (not Thomas!) on 11-26-1854 in Meigs County,
Ohio. I only had three children for them, a Chester Coon, John R. Coon, and
Minerva Coon. Well, I found three more children for them- a Henry Coon, Arline
Coon, and Silas Coon. Silas Coon is buried right there in Ashland, Kentucky in
the same cemetery as a son of Hawkins Bishop is buried- the Dixon cemetery in
Westwood, Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky. There is already a photo of his stone
up on FindaGrave! I was quite happy over this find. This particular line had
bothered me for a long time, as I could never find absolutely any information
about Elizabeth, her husband, or her children. Well, now we have that!

I found a marriage record for an Elizabeth Bishop marrying a John Coon in Meigs
County Ohio on 11-26-1854. I suspect that that is whom this is.

1881 in Cabell County, West Virginia, and died September 12, 1943 in Ashland,
Boyd County, Kentucky. She married CHARLES ROWAN GARVIN in Ashland, Boyd
County, Kentucky, son of OVERTON GARVIN and ELIZABETH BOYER. He was born July
24, 1872 in Jackson County, Ohio.

Notes for MAYME COON:
Note: It would appear, based on date of birth of Maurice and Mayme's marage date
that Maurice was born out of wedlock. It is not certain that Charles R. Garvin
is the natural father of Maurice. Also, Mayme left Charles and all her small
children,allegedly for another man. His name was Crystal "Cricket" Proctor. In
1942, in the Ashland City Directory it listed Mayme as living with Paul and Alma
Garvin Thompson, her daughter. She was listed as Mayme Garvin, widow of Charles
Rowan Garvin, however at Mayme's place of employment, Gallaher Drug's on 16th
and Winchester, it had her listed as Mayme "Proctor"and also listed her home as
840 Greenup Avenue (Alma and Paul's address). Also in the obituary of her mother
it listed her as Mayme Proctor. It is not known if Mayme was married to Crystal
Proctor, however no divorce records have been found and no marrage license has
yet to be found regarding a marrage to Mr. Proctor. Her death record list her as
Garvin as well as her obituary and her grave marker. At the time of this
research all her living children stated that she was not married to Mr. Proctor.
It is believed that she went by the name of Proctor, at times, to more or less
to "save face" out of respect for her children. Yhose children living at home
when she deserted them were Alma, Raymond and Mary Alice.

Notes for ROBERT E. GARVIN:
Note: Upon the death of Bob's father, he had several siblings still living with
the father (Charles Rowan). People in the neighborhood wanted to state to take
these young children: Alma, Raymond and Mary Alice and put them up for adoption.
The mother, Mayme had deserted the father and kids sometime prior to Charles
death. It is said that Bob said, "As long as there is life in these two hands
you will not take these kids." Bob and Nell therefore raised the kids until the
were old enough to provide for themselves.

Notes for MAURICE D. GARVIN:
Note: Maurice had two children named Erma Lea and Margaret Jean. Birth records
in Kentucky show the following: Ramona L. Garvin was born on 13 Feb 1926 to
Hattie Rice in Boyd County and Jacquline Garvin born on 8 Dec 1927 to Hattie
Rice in Floyd County, which more than likely was Boyd County. Erma Lea had her
name changed as of 20 May 1987 as her birth certificate had an amended name of
"Ramona". Original certificate reflects the name of "Erma Lea." As of 13 April
1998, Margaret Jean's certificate has not yet been received, but it is assumed
that her name was also changed. No reason has been found for this change.
