A useful tip for anyone staying in Coroico – there’s a clear
trail starting behind Hotel Esmeraldas which goes up Cerro Uchumachi. The first
part goes through some shrubby areas (with Olive-crowned crescentchest) and small
patches of semi-humid forest (with the as-yet-undescribed form of Cnemotriccus
flycatcher). After an hour or two at birding pace the trail flattens and enters
fairly pristine cloud forest with interesting birds, including Hooded Tinamou
and Scimitar-winged Piha.
Not as good as Apa Apa, but if you are stuck in Coroico it does
the trick.
Best of luck,
Joe
