Hi, Ottavio,
Although I'm not in Iquitos now, I will give you some tips:
There is not problem to visit the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve in any season,
the road is paved all the way. You can hire a taxi for a small amount and
go to the "varillales" in half an hour from Iquitos, without any problem.
You can see all the white-sand species in a varillal in the 25 km. from
Iquitos (less the Cherrie's Antbird, that only can be found in upper Nanay
river), plus the recently described in Wilson Bull. Allpahuayo Antbird
(Percnostola arenarum) and the oncoming in Auk Northern Chesnut-tailed
Antbird (Myrmeciza castanea centuculorum). All the species have been
recorded next to the road, you don't need to walk too much to find them if
you know the right places.
Now, the right guy to contact there is Juan Diaz Alvan, a young biologist
that is the only one that knows the exact location of the territories and
special habitats of every species. You should contact him at
j.diazalvan@.... He also can arrange for you the permits from the
IIAP, the manager of the Reserve (the fee is about 10 dollars a day, I
think).
About Pacaya Samiria Reserve, I don't know of any other published work
about its avifauna.
If you have other questions, I would be happy to help you.
Cheers
Pepe Alvarez

Subject: [Birdingperu] RFI Iquitos-Nauta Rd & Pacaya-Samiria
Hello,
Later this month I will spend about 10 days in the Pacaya-Samiria reserve,
and may have a free day in Iquitos. I was wondering if anyone knew of
accessible sites on the Iquitos-Nauta road for the "varrillal" specialties
(Ancient Antwren, Mishana Tyrannulet etc.), how to get there and whether
these can easily be reached by taxi from Iquitos (I understand that this is
the rainy season and part of the road may be closed), and if these same
sites also hold species like Pompadour Cotinga and Cherrie's Antwren that
have recently been discovered in the area.
Also I would appreciate any info on the avifauna of Pacaya-Samiria. I have
Begazo & Valqui's 1998 Bull BOC paper but I've found very little else
published on the area.
I might also have some free time in Lima and would hope to spend it at
Pantanos de Villa. Is this easily accessible by taxi? What about Lomas de
Lachay?
Thanks for any info,
Ottavio Janni
