I bought a used titanium frame bike with a Chris King NoThread Headset on a carbon fork. It was missing the compressor cap, so I got one of those. I've tried following instructions to install it, but no matter what I do I can't seem to take up the play in the headset. Is there a trick I'm missing?

Sorry to hear that 'chopper. Hope you're on the mend. Last January I went down
on the boardwalk just north of Old Town. Someone on here helpfully pointed out
later that you can see whether there is frost on the white-painted boards by
watching your front tire as it rolls onto the boardwalk - it'll pick up some
frost so you know whether to take it slow. Walking is another smart move.

OK, I confirmed that you'd pick up the tickets at the theater with a print-out
of the email I received.

Again, that's $15 (obo) for both tickets to a great cycling documentary -- let
me know if you're interested!

Although, given Tom's preference cyclocross racing, perhaps we should add some
fences for him to climb and have him ride/run through some marshland next to the
Anacostia.

Tom- the problem with 214 is east of 301, there are 3 travel lanes
each way and NO shoulder, not nice. Also, PA ave close to DC is a
similar situation. I have a route from Annapolis to capital hill area
(my office is 3rd/E SW) that I have refined over the years and it is
the best mix I have found between good roads and safety. Give it a
look and feel free to contact me if you have questions. The route is

214 has a huge shoulder and is perfectly safe for bicycling. However, I usually don't ride all the way in to the city, but stop at Largo or New Carrolton, so I don't know what you'll find west of there.  Also, since I'm heading to/from Largo, I get off/onto 214 at Lake Arbor Way.  Seems to me that traffic on 214 is somewhat heavier west of there.  Otherwise, the only traffic problems I've had on 214 is when there's a mob going to Great Adventure/Six Flags.

Actually, once, years ago,  I was intending to ride all the way in, and had gotten into the district when my rear derailleur cable finally frayed through its last wire, so I gave up the ride and got on the metro at Addison Rd. It's not exactly picturesque, but I didn't feel threatened or intimidated either.

Jon,

I ride my rollers when the weather is not accommodating and (I still can't believe I did that) I've learnt to ride clipless on my trainers last winter as well. In retrospect, I would have left learning/getting used to clipless pedals for conventional riding, but I like riding the rollers. I have not tried stationary trainers other than for bike fitting and I can see the advantage of being able to ride and read/watch TV...

I got used to my rollers in about 30 minutes of on/off riding but still cannot start without holding something near by. If more than one person will use them with bikes that have different wheel base though, it may be a hassle to change the front roller position everytime. For me the rollers helped a lot keeping a good balance and keeping a good line during group rides. Also, as you cannot coast effectively on the rollers it helped me to build up stamina as well. I have never realized how much I coasted even on flat, level roads.

I did a quick search of the past posts in this Yahoo Group, but I have not found the golden ticket when it comes to buying my wife a great gift this season.  I am looking for anyone's insight into a resistance trainer.  I have found a good price for an Elite Crono InOut magnetic resistance trainer.  I don't need a system that includes DVDs and I am prepared to use an older back tire for the winter.  Our goal is to get some miles in over the winter in our tiny home gym.  Any info that would help me be a superstar husband would be greatly appreciated.  (I guess I will leave that question wide open.)

Oh, if anyone can tell me how to use a roller and survive, I would love to hear about that as well.

I submitted a report about the connection from Commonwealth Avenue to the trail on the south side of Four Mile Run about three weeks ago. I got a similar response to yours, Leslie, and they haven't yet made the change nor have they e-mailed me. I guess they still have another ten days or so to make the corrections, but I'm not holding my breath. Who knows how long the queue of such corrections is?

The draft report of Greater Washington 2050, Region Forward 2050, outlines a vision of compact development with walkable, bikeable communities. The road lobby is not happy. They have a very different vision that includes another, outer beltway (Eastern Bypass), a major n-s highway to expand sprawl in the western suburbs (the Tri-County Parkway), and many others. PRESS RELEASE

Honda to Begin Sales of Honda Bicycle Simulator Developed for Traffic Safety
Education

TOKYO, Japan, October 15, 2009 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today announced plans to
begin Japan-wide sales starting February 2010, of the Honda Bicycle Simulator
developed for the purpose of traffic safety education. By safely experiencing
the possible risks bicycle riders may face, users will improve their ability to
predict risks and increase safety awareness. In addition, rider evaluation
session which will follow the riding simulation will help users learn traffic
rules and manners in an enjoyable way. Honda will aim for widespread use of this
simulator by a range of customers including public offices, law-enforcement
organizations, driving schools and educational institutions which conduct
bicycle safety education programs primarily for school children and senior
citizens. Honda will begin accepting pre-sale orders in November of this year.

In recent years, the total number of fatalities from traffic accidents has
declined in Japan. However, the ratio of fatalities in accidents involving
bicycles has increased. Bicycle riders aged 10 - 19 in and above the age of 50
have the highest chance to get involved in an accident, and approximately 70
percent of bicycle accidents are caused by violation of traffic rules.

Leveraging the know-how accumulated through its activities to promote traffic
safety since 1964, Honda has been developing and selling motorcycle and
automobile simulators since 1996 and 2001, respectively, as traffic safety
educational devices which enable users to safely experience the risks based on
real-world traffic situations. By offering these simulators, Honda's goal is to
improve people's ability to predict risks and increase safety awareness.
Striving to realize a richer mobility society in the future, Honda developed the
Honda Bicycle Simulator as an educational tool for a wider range of people.

Key features of the Honda Bicycle Simulator
<Hardware>
・ Compact design (length 2,270mm × height 1,400mm × width 990mm, weight
88kg)
・ Equipped with monitors to check right/left and behind.
・ Equipped with a "walking sensor" which recognizes the user's action of
walking the bicycle.
<Software>
・ Contains different courses such as "going to school," "going to the grocery
store," "going to cram school" and "going to a local shopping street" to offer
realistic experiences for user groups of different ages.
・ Contains a course for the user to learn traffic laws and manners to ride a
bicycle in mixed traffic.
・ After the simulation, the rider's path can be reviewed from multiple vantage
points -above/below and right/left- and the riding situation and evaluation will
be displayed on the monitor.

Sales Plan (in Japan): 500 units per year

Suggested Retail Price (in Japan, including delivery fee): 732,900 yen (698,000
yen before tax)

This has been discussed a few times. There was a short blip on this in
Bicycling Magazine. But here is a longer and informative discussion on the
topic.

My wife and I rode one of the routes around Sugarloaf the other day. We
normally ride mainly the flats so this was a nice change for us. We would like
to get some climbing experience, although we are not looking for substantial
challenges (yet). I looked at various routes on mapmyride and bikely but didn't
find any that went up to the top of Sugarloaf. Can anyone tell me how long the
road is, how steep, total vertical? Any suggestions for other long, moderate
climbs in the area? We live on Capitol Hill.
